Mr. Thepparat Theppitak, President of EGCO Group, said, “EGCO Group has emphasized its solid foundation in power business by introducing the new development of “EGCO Cogeneration SPP Replacement” project in Rayong province with a net capacity of 74 MW.

The project has recently entered into the financial agreements with three banks with the funding amount of approximately 2,700 million baht. Those banks are Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited, Government Savings Bank, and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Thai) Public Company Limited. The total investment is approximately 3,600 million baht. The project has started the construction activities since May 2022 and is scheduled to start commercial operation in January 2024.”

The “EGCO Cogeneration SPP Replacement” project, owned by EGCO 80% and J-Power Holdings (Thailand) Co., Ltd. 20%, will be located at the site adjacent to the existing EGCO Cogeneration power plant in Rayong Industrial Park, Map Kha Sub-district, Nikhom Pattana District, Rayong Province. It will replace the existing power plant after its PPA expires in 2024.

The new facility is driven by gas-fired cogeneration system with the latest and advanced technology which will help improve the energy utilization efficiency and be environmentally friendly. The new facility will sell electricity to EGAT under a 25-year PPA for SPP replacement scheme while the rest of the electricity output and stream from electricity generating process will be sold to the industrial users in the Rayong Industrial Park and nearby area. 

“According to EGCO Group’s expertise in power generation, the new power plant will supply reliable electricity and stream to serve the demand of industrial users in order to support Thailand’s economic growth and contribute to the national energy security. Thai Bankers’ Association (TBA) highlights the prominent role of commercial banks in supporting international trade and the aim to upgrade trade transactions between Thailand and Saudi Arabia with 2 projects that will improve competitiveness of Thai importers and exporters.

Payong Srivanich, the chairman of the Thai Bankers’ Association (TBA), gave an overview of the development of Thailand’s financial facilities and services at the Thai-Saudi Business Forum, attended by over 200 Thai and Saudi businesspeople, at ICONSIAM on 6th July 2022, stating that Thai banks place high importance on the development of digital infrastructure in order to upgrade trade transaction services, enable seamless linking of trade and financial data and promote continuous growth of international trade. Two major projects that will enhance trades are:

1. Smart Financial and Payment Infrastructure for Business, which aims at developing the country’s digital financial infrastructure by enabling end-to-end digital business and linking data on business transactions, payments and tax. It involves moving from paper-based trading to a digital system, covering e-invoices, e-tax invoices and e-payments for businesses. This aims to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and create digital footprints to improve access to funding at reasonable costs. As a result, the project will pave the way for digital supply chain financing and the utilization of  digital trade and payment data to improve financial inclusion.

2. National Digital Trade Platform (NDTP), which is a collaboration between relevant public and private entities to develop a platform that facilitates export and import procedures by integrating all transaction data and utilizing e-Document to reduce paper handling. NDTP can be connected to the National Single Window (NSW) and foreign digital trade platforms. Currently, it is connected to Japan’s and Singapore’s trade platforms, and it plans to expand connectivity to other countries in Europe and the Middle East. The platform will bring greater convenience to importers and exporters, as well as improved efficiency and transparency. It will also boost competitiveness and uncover new opportunities for Thai businesses.

At present, commercial banks play a major role in international trades as they provide a wide range of services such as   remittance, collection, letter of credit and document preparation. They also have convenient online channels which provide access to trade finance solutions and document submission. In 2021, foreign exchange transactions of commercial banks totaled over USD 1,709 billion, showing the high liquidity of the market. Commercial banks registered in Thailand accounted for 65% of the total transactions while foreign bank branches shared the other 35%, reflecting Thai commercial banks’ prominent role in international trade. 
 

Moreover, commercial banks are key players in the Thai financial system, having 92% of the Thai banking system’s total assets. Assets of the 6 largest commercial banks registered in Thailand total USD 537 billion, accounting for 79% of the market. Thai banks also have strong financial positions as the country’s 6 largest banks receive investment grade ratings from all three major credit rating agencies.

“Commercial banks, as well as Thai regulations, are now more conducive to international trades. Thailand has made adjustments to regulations to expand the scope of foreign exchange transactions beyond hedging transactions. The new regulations now allow companies to conduct foreign exchange transactions with fewer documents. We believe that these improvements will further promote growth in international trade between Thailand and Saudi Arabia.”

NT starts building gateway station for OneWeb satellite network

The National Telecommunications (NT) Plc has started building a gateway station for the OneWeb satellite constellation in Ubon Ratchathani province, NT deputy managing director Somyos Thanapirunthorn said.

Somyos said the construction of the satellite gateway station would take about eight months and it would serve as a gateway for the OneWeb satellite broadband internet connection for Asean within the second quarter of next year.

OneWeb is a global communications network powered by a constellation of 648 low Earth orbit satellites. Headquartered in London, OneWeb enables high-speed, low latency connectivity for governments, businesses, and communities everywhere around the world.

Somyos said the gateway station is being built on a 40,000-square metre area inside the Sirindhorn satellite station in Ubon Ratchathani under the OneWeb Satellite Network Portal Site Hosting Services.

The construction will build 14 antenna bases along with equipment and facilities that are designed to provide complete ground station services for OneWeb satellites, Somyos said.

He added that OneWeb has so far sent 428, or 66 per cent, of its 648 satellites constellation into orbit and the remaining satellites are expected to be launched within this year.

Somyos said the Sirindhorn gateway will be one of more than 40 gateway stations of OneWeb around the world.

The gateway will uplink and downlink data to connect with the entire OneWeb satellite constellation to provide internet connectivity around the world, Somyos added.

The NT, which is a state firm formed from the merger of CAT Telecom and TOT, has been carrying telecom satellite businesses for over 50 years, Somyos added.

The NT has also been assigned by the government to operate Thaicom 4 and Thaicom 6 at the Nonthaburi satellite uplink station after the two satellites were returned as state properties at the end of the concession with Thaicom.

SCG showcases ‘thinnest’ concrete bridge in Southeast Asia

The 30-metre-long Chalermphrakiart Bridge was built in the SCG head office compound in Bang Sue last year but the conglomerate announced the development only now to invite construction firms to learn about the new technologies under the company’s Green Construction philosophy.

SCG vice president Chana Phumee, who is in charge of the firm’s Cement and Green Solution Business, said the company used its ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) to build the “thin” concrete bridge.

Chana said the UHPC created a concrete pressure force five times higher than other technologies allow and helped the fabricated concrete to withstand heavy pressure and strong pulling forces, for example from material such as metal sheets.

According to him, with UHPC technology, fabricated concrete slabs can be made 30 per cent thinner than conventional ones.

Chana said the technologies allowed SCG to save energy during construction in line with its Green Construction policy, with the conservation reducing carbon emissions by 20 per cent compared to the normal construction process.

The bridge is only 30cm thick at its beams while the thinnest portion is a mere 2.5cm thick.

He said the bridge construction started in January last year and was completed in September.

SCG used a 3D digital model to design the structure and manage the construction. It also used CPAC Drone Solutions to precisely monitor the progress of the construction.

Businesses that want to update their construction technologies would do well to check out the bridge, Chana added.

Petrol prices to drop by THB3 per litre and E85 by THB1.8

The PTT Oil and Retail Business Plc and Bangchak Corporation will reduce their retail petrol prices by 1.8 baht per litre for E85 gasohol petrol and 3 baht per litre for other petrol types.

Petrol prices to drop by THB3 per litre and E85 by THB1.8

The two firms said the price reductions will take effect at 5am on Friday.

But diesel oil price will remain unchanged at 34.94 baht per litre.

The new rates will see petrol stations in Bangkok sell petrol at:

Non-gasohol benzene: 48.96 baht

Gasohol 95: 41.55 baht

Gasohol 91: 41.28 baht

E20: 40.44
 baht

E85: 35.34 baht

TAT to propose visa fee exemption to lure more foreign tourists

The Tourism Authority of Thailand will ask the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to consider waving visa fees until the year-end to promote arrivals and increased spending by foreign tourists.

TAT to propose visa fee exemption to lure more foreign tourists

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the proposal would be raised at the next CCSA meeting, which has not been scheduled yet.

Yuthasak said the visa fee exemption would be another step to boost revenue from foreign tourists after the CCSA abolished the Thailand Pass registration on July 1.

TAT expects revenue of 1.5 trillion baht this year, compared to 3 trillion in 2019 before the Covid pandemic, the governor said.

Tourism operators have been calling for the exemption of visa fees, once approved, until December 31.

The fee is currently 1,000 baht for those applying for a visa before arrival and 2,000 baht for a visa on arrival.

Yuthasak said tour operators also proposed that the government extend tourism visas from 30 to 45 days for those seeking one in advance and the visa on arrival from 15 to 45 days.

The operators believe a visa exemption and longer stay would encourage more foreign tourists to visit Thailand and stay longer, and thus spend more in the kingdom.

They also pointed out that the two proposals would support the government’s Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023 policy.

“The private sector and TAT has seen that each foreign tourist normally plans his or her tourism budget. If tourists don’t need to pay visa fees, they would spend the money in our country,” Yuthasak explained.

He said TAT expected about 5 million to 7 million foreign tourists to visit Thailand in the second half of this year and spend some 5-7 billion baht, injecting money into the domestic economy.

“This money will distribute income better to the grassroots people. In particular, Indian tourists who travel in families, will spend more here if they don’t have to pay 8,000 baht to 10,000 baht for visa fees alone,” Yuthasak said.

However, he said, the proposals would have to be considered by other related government agencies as well. Visa applications are under responsibility of the Foreign Ministry while the Immigration Bureau oversees the visa on arrival, he said.

Yuthasak noted that after Thailand Pass was discontinued on July 1, the number of foreign arrivals jumped to some 38,000 to 40,000 a day, compared to 25,000-30,000 a day in June.

“If the current rate of international arrivals continues, the number of foreign tourists will exceed one million per month. TAT expects about one million foreign tourists to arrive each month in the third quarter or from July to September. The number will increase to 1.5 million in the fourth quarter,” Yuthasak believed.

He said TAT expects about 9.5 million foreign tourists to visit Thailand this year – if there are enough flights for them.

In the first six months, 2.1 million visited the country, with Indians topping the list at 234,206, followed by 196,764 Malaysians and 127,371 Singaporeans.

Meanwhile, Thai Hotels Association president Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi said a survey of 137 hotels from June 13 to 26 found that the room occupancy rate in June was 38 per cent compared to 36 per cent in May.

She expected occupancy in July to improve because of the government’s extension of the fourth phase of its “We Travel Together” subsidy scheme.

The association expects an occupancy rate of more than 50 per cent in the fourth quarter, Marisa said.

The cancellation of Thailand Pass and the lifting of the mask mandate did bode well for the hotel business, resulting in a clearer sign of recovery, she maintained.

However, the lack of skilled personnel – as many have resigned and returned to their home provinces during the Covid pandemic – would hamper hotel business recovery, Marisa said.

According to her, the shortage of hotel personnel was serious in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Surat Thani.

Baht could dwindle to 36.40 during the day: market strategist

The baht opened at 36.23 to the US dollar on Thursday, the highest in six years, weakening from Wednesday’s close of 36.10.

Baht could dwindle to 36.40 during the day: market strategist

The currency is expected to move between 36.15 and 36.40 during the day, predicted Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool.

Poon said the dollar’s strengthening was an important factor that pressured the baht to decline more than expected.

The Thai currency will continue to weaken if market concern about a recession in Europe does not subside or if the European Central Bank does not signal that it would increase the interest rate.

Poon said the dollar might “invert” if the US Federal Reserve, too, does not signal it will go in for a heavy rate increase at the end of this month.

The baht has a chance to strengthen, but could even weaken past 36.50 to the dollar if the Chinese government enforces lockdown measures again and the number of Covid-19 patients in Thailand increases.

The Bank of Thailand might however intervene, which would slow the weakening of the baht, so investors will be able to close risks in time, he said.

Exporters might sell the dollar once the baht passes 36 to the US currency, which could also temper the baht’s weakening, Poon added.

(PR News) After five years in the making, the prestigious Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) opened yesterday (3 July), as the latest addition to Hong Kong’s arts and cultural offerings and the West Kowloon Cultural District.

Joining a host of other landmark attractions on the storied Victoria Harbour waterfront, such as the newly opened M+ and recently renovated Hong Kong Museum of Art, the HKPM not only elevates the city’s lineup of renowned museums but also enriches its diversity of the arts and culture scene. What’s more, the much-loved “A Symphony of Lights” will bathe Victoria Harbour in lights, music and colours with an enchanting special edition every night in July.

A must-visit museum full of priceless treasures

Located on the western tip of the West Kowloon Cultural District, the HKPM joins M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture, the Xiqu Centre for Chinese opera and Freespace contemporary performance venue, to take the area to new heights. Visitors can look forward to a wide array of captivating exhibitions, shows, activities and events that deepen and diversify the city’s cultural offerings.   

The HKPM is a must-visit attraction for arts and culture lovers, and a treasure trove of rare artefacts. For starters, it houses one of the world’s most impressive collections of Chinese ceramics and more than 900 works of art on loan from the esteemed Palace Museum in Beijing – among the largest and finest the Palace Museum has ever made to another cultural institution outside the Mainland since its establishment. The HKPM also displays 13 precious pieces borrowed from the Louvre as a testament to the museum’s role as an East-meets-West Centre for International Cultural Exchange.

Enhanced “A Symphony of Lights” illuminates new landmarks across Victoria Harbour including Star Ferry

With Hong Kong’s dynamic skyline as a canvas, “A Symphony of Lights” show takes viewers on a multimedia journey that celebrates the city’s culture and innovative spirit. This month, a special edition of the show will breathe new energy into the city’s popular experience. At 8pm every night through July, the captivating spectacle will feature new elements, including a fleet of 6 Star Ferries adorned with glittering light installations, and expand to include new landmarks, such as the HKPM and M+. With an array of distinguished arts and cultural venues and enhanced nightly light shows, visitors can now immerse themselves in a one-day adventure by the waterfront in the refreshed West Kowloon Cultural District. 

From artistic treasures and cultural encounters at the HKPM to new creative performances that turn a spotlight on Victoria Harbour, Hong Kong remains one of the world’s most exciting and enriching destinations.
