E-commerce will continue roaring ahead next year as sales of medicinal supplements, fashion, and kitchen products surge, e-commerce titan Alibaba said.

Globally, e-commerce sales will surpass US$5 trillion this year, resulting in a surge of money circulating in business-to-business portals.

E-commerce has remained vital for B2B business despite the war in Ukraine, supply chain hiccups, and energy shortages, Alibaba said.

Sales of health and wellness products will rise next year, Alibaba said, citing a survey by the World Economic Forum that found 62% of respondents were more concerned with their health now than they were before the pandemic.

Unease about health and the environment will foster greater use of eco- and health-friendly products, such as medicinal supplements, air purifiers, and reusable water bottles, Alibaba said.

Fashion products, especially shapewear and high-waist jeans, will also see rising demand due to the resumption of social and outdoor activities. Demand for beauty and personal care products, like sleeping masks and  electric toothbrushes, will surge by more than 50% over the next few years, reaching $131 billion in revenue by 2026.

Kitchen items, like portable blenders and air fryers, are likely to post strong sales next year as consumers continue to dine at home. Even after the pandemic, seven out of 10 consumers will continue to cook at home, Alibaba said.

The company also said that home decor products would continue to see high sales, with growth forecast to rise by 4.8% a year. Online sales of home decor products saw revenue of $641.4 billion in 2020, Alibaba said.

Spending on childcare-related products – including baby monitors, swings, and toys – is rising. In the US alone, demand for these goods climbed by 17% in 2021, according to Alibaba.

Demand for pet-care products, like kitty beds, will also rise, it said, citing Google Trends.

Sales of office supplies and gadgets will continue to surge as more people work from home, Alibaba said.

The cost of electricity for businesses will not rise as much in January as proposed earlier this month, following an intensive and coordinated effort by Thailand’s largest business associations to prevent what they described as a crippling rise in the fuel tariff (Ft) rate.

The Energy Regulatory Commission has approved a decision by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) to reduce a rise in the Ft rate during the first quarter of next year, commission secretary-general Komkrit Tantravanich said on Thursday.

Komkrit said the commission made the decision at a meeting on Wednesday.

The Ft rate is determined by the cost of fuel used for generating electricity and the cost of buying power from private generating plants.

Komkrit said Egat asked his commission to review the new Ft rates in light of fluctuations in the prices of natural gas and diesel, as well as exchange rates. The accumulated debt of Egat was also a factor considered.

Komkrit said the commission on Wednesday approved an Ft rate for non-household electricity of 154.82 satang per unit (100 satang is one baht). This was a 35.52 satang reduction from the Ft rate of 190.44 satang per unit approved on December 14.

The reduction from the December 14 proposed rate for non-household electricity lowers the per unit rate to 5.33 baht from the proposed 5.69 baht per unit, from January to April, Komkrit said.

The commission also approved Egat’s proposal to maintain the Ft rate for household electricity use at 93.43 satang per unit, keeping the power rate for households at 4.72 baht per unit during the same period.

On December 14, the ERC decided to raise the Ft rate for non-household use by 97.01 satang to 190.44 satang per unit, which would result in a power rate for non-household use of 5.69 baht per unit – an increase of 21%.

The ERC’s decision sparked a backlash from businesses, which argued that a rise in the cost of electricity would undermine their profitability and competitiveness when they had yet to fully recover from the pandemic.

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking held a press conference earlier this month at which leaders of the country’s largest business associations appealed to the government, as well as Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, to delay the proposed rate hike, saying it could damage members of their associations as well as the country’s economy.

Bangkok and Chonburi are the two provinces where most foreigners bought condominiums in the first nine months of 2022, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Centre (REIC) said.

The centre reported on Wednesday that 75.2% of condominium ownership that had been transferred to foreign nationals from January to September this year were either in the capital or the eastern resort province.

Bangkok saw 3,325 units sold to foreigners, or 45.6% of all condo units sold to foreigners, while Chonburi recorded 2,155 units sold, or 29.6%.

Other provinces on the list, but at significantly lower numbers than the top two, are Samut Prakan, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.

The REIC noted that about 30% of condo units sold to foreigners are pre-owned.

“Sales of condominiums to foreign customers have been gradually rising in the past two years, but are still lower than the pre-pandemic level,” said the centre. “The reopening of borders, lifting of Covid restrictions, recovery of the tourism industry and the local economy are factors that have driven up property sales to foreigners.”

The REIC added that the biggest foreign clients of the condominium market have always been Chinese. However, since China has yet to fully reopen, Thai property sellers must seek buyers from other markets, such as Europe, the US, Australia, Russia and India.

The centre said that the recent announcement by the Chinese health authorities that the country will scrap quarantine measures for overseas arrivals starting January 8 could be an immediate gamechanger for Thailand’s tourism industry, but the impact of the measure on the property sector would be visible only late in the second half of 2023.

“The property market trend for foreigners next year remains to be seen, as Chinese buyers might not have the same purchasing power as before, due to the battering the Chinese economy has taken for nearly two years because of the strict zero-Covid policy,” the REIC pointed out.

“Plus, to boost its economy the Chinese government could impose measures that promote domestic spending rather than overseas purchases.”

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is in talks with its offices in China to update its plan for attracting Chinese tourists following Beijing’s announcement earlier this week that it will begin relaxing restrictions on travel on January 8.

The discussions began after China’s National Health Commission announced on Monday that it would allow Chinese citizens to apply for passports for travel from January 8, after nearly three years of strict pandemic border controls prevented tourists from leaving the country.

Visitors from China were Thailand’s largest tourism market before the pandemic struck in 2020.

TAT executive director of the East Asia region, Chuwit Sirivejkul, said the Chinese government’s announcement that it would allow its citizens to apply for passports for travel from January 8 was already leading to a surge of interest in travel to Thailand.

Online searches for travel packages skyrocketed in China and airlines have asked its aviation authorities to increase the number of international flights.

Chuwit said the TAT was working with its five offices in China – in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kunming and Chengdu – to revise its plan to attract Chinese tourists to Thailand.

“Chinese travel agencies have launched travel packages to Thailand for the upcoming Chinese New Year festival,” Chuwit added.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said the agency would discuss its plan to attract Chinese tourists with hotel operators, airlines, and airport operators.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said Thailand would increase next year’s target for international tourists, from 20 million to 25 million, following Beijing’s announcement. This will help the country reach its 2023 tourism revenue target of 2.38 trillion baht, the minister said.

Palm and rubber farmers in Krabi province have been urged to grow coffee instead, as demand for the beverage is rising faster in Asia than in other parts of the world.

Krabi’s coffee is now gaining international attention thanks to its certification as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, Deputy Commerce Minister Sinit Lertkrai said on Tuesday. Sinit was reporting on his visit to a coffee-processing community enterprise in Krabi’s Khlong Thom Nua, which he hailed as a triumph for the ministry’s GI policy.

“We wanted this policy to improve farmers’ quality of life, and we succeeded,” he said.

He said he now expects Krabi’s coffee to gain global attention, boosting Thailand’s soft power along the way.

Thanawat Phukaoluan, adviser to the agriculture minister, thanked the Agriculture and Commerce ministries for certifying Krabi coffee as a GI product, saying this had helped increase its value and expand Thailand’s coffee market.

The coffee business is popular among entrepreneurs and investors after being named among outstanding businesses this year, he said, citing data from trade fair exhibitor Informa​ Markets​.

The value of Thailand’s coffee is expected to hit 60 billion baht soon, he added.

This should prompt the government to encourage palm and rubber farmers to grow coffee instead, Thanawat said.

Coffee consumption in Asia has risen 1.5% over the past five years, beating Europe’s 0.5% rise and the US’s 1.2%, he said.

Thai exports exceed 2022 target despite end-of-year slump

Exports rose 7.6% in the first 11 months of 2022 to US$265.34 billion or 9.16 trillion baht, exceeding the target of 9 trillion baht for the whole year, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Tuesday.

Cross-border trade in the same period was worth 944 billion baht, down 0.51% from the previous year.

However, exports in November were down 6% on last year to $22.3 billion, while imports rose 5.6% to $23.65 billion. December’s export figures are also expected to drop from last year amid the ongoing global economic slowdown.

Thailand logged a trade deficit of US$15.08 billion or 522.2 billion baht in the first 11 months.

Export markets that saw the biggest expansion in volume in November were Iraq (215.6%), Bahrain (153.1%), Saudi Arabia (40.1%), the United Kingdom (22.2%), and Laos (21.3%)

Driving export expansion this year are the reopening of 72 of 97 Thai border checkpoints, a 10% rise in global food demand, growing demand for tech products as 5G coverage spreads, and easing of the semiconductor shortage, Jurin said.

Factors hindering exports include high inflation and the stagnating global economy, as well as the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The Research and Innovation Department together with Thammasat University Research and Consulting Institute ( TU RAC ) honoured 73 teachers and researchers, awarding a total of 57 awards to seven branches.

The “Researcher Honorary Day at Thammasat University 2022” was held to honour, boost morale and encourage research and innovation that could bring about developmental changes, both in Thailand and global society, as well as win national and international awards. Professor Surapon Nitikraipot, council president of Thammasat University, presided over the awards ceremony.

Assoc. Prof. Gasinee Witoonchart, President of Thammasat University, said, “Thammasat is an educational institution that places importance on academics, research, creativity, inventions and innovations. We are committed to promoting research and further innovation. The research fund is established at Thammasat University, with a budget of about 150 million baht and we are about to set up a fund for professors, with a budget of about 200 million baht, to support both domestic and international researchers. Together with teachers and researchers at Thammasat, we produce research that will raise the level of research quality and be accepted globally. 

In the past, Thammasat University has had many innovations that have been awarded in the country and a renowned global reputation.

It emphasizes the potential of Thammasat professionals who have the knowledge and ability to invent innovations to solve social problems.

The research works that received an award is a great proof of Thammasat’s success. The research can create visible changes in society (Social Impact). Professor Siriwan Suebnukarn, Vice President for Research and Innovation, at Thammasat University, said, “The Research and Innovation Department has received budgets for the implementation of research plans and activities thoroughly and continuously. In order to promote and support research and innovation in various fields such as research study, creative work, innovation, inventions, publication of works, registration of intellectual property rights, etc. 
It is our pleasure to say that in the year 2022, the university’s professionals and researchers have received numerous national and international external awards for their research and innovation, which reinforce the university’s achievements in generating high-quality research. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Witaya Danthamrongkul, Director of TU RAC, said, “This year, TU RAC has been entrusted by various agencies to provide more than 372 research projects. There are also many famous researchers from our university. And we received about 10 awards in the category of large projects worth 20 million baht or more. Therefore, it is considered this is another year of success for TU RAC in producing quality research. And we are dedicated to creating innovative research for society in the future.” 
Those who received prizes at the event “Researchers Honorary Day at Thammasat University 2022” is divided into 7 types of medals, consisting of:

1. Those who have been graciously appointed to the position of Professor, in total of 7 medals;

2. Recipients of the Royal Award of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, distinguished research professors, senior researchers and distinguished national researchers, in total of 4 medals;

3. Researchers who have been appointed to professors and received higher salaries, in a total of 2 medals;

4. Recipients of an outstanding research award winner at Thammasat University, in total of 19 medals and 4 research papers;

5. Recipients of large projects researchers, in a total of 11 medals;

6. Recipients receiving awards for outstanding young researchers at the department level, in a total of 12 medals;

7. Recipients of honorary awards for research from external agencies, in total of 21 medals, 17 awards. 

Professor Dr Paskorn Sritipsukho, the winner who received the Outstanding Research Award for the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine in Thailand: a study in real situations (Covid-19 Vaccine Effectiveness in Thailand: a Real World Study), said that the award ceremony that “This research is challenging. It is also the beginning of research and development to build the confidence of the public towards a vaccine that has been invented to prevent Covid.”

 As Assistant Professor  Peera Charoenvattananukul, an outstanding young researcher at the department level receive 3 awards:

1. The End of Compromise: Political Meanings of Thailand’s First National Day Celebrations on 24 June 1939;

2. Overthrowing Giants for Status: Social Stigmatisation of Status Dissatisfaction with a case study of the Russo-Japanese War 1904-05;

3. Feigned resignation as political strategy: cracking the mysterious case of Phibunsongkhram’s reversal of resignation in 1943; has mentioned this success as “Very happy for the award received”. 

Associate Professor Jaturong Tantibundit, a representative of an honorary award for research from an external organization that has received the State Excellence Award 2022 (excellent level) in the category of expanding service standards on Al Chest 4All (DMS-TU) For Thai People, said, “I’m glad and proud that this research can be used continuously. This award will be an important inspiration for future work and to develop of technology that will benefit society. And will be an example for future generations of students and other researchers as well.”

Bangkok’s annual light and digital art festival “Awakening Bangkok 2022” returns for its 5th edition to the Charoenkrung-Talad Noi neighborhood, aims to promote nighttime economy, social and economic sustainability, and festival tourism

The continuous collaboration with TAT, TCEB, CEA and the BMA reflects the collective goal to make Awakening Bangkok one of the main festivals on Thailand’s and regional tourism calendar. The festival is currently recognized as one of the “Colorful Bangkok” events, BMA’s three-month campaign that aims to revitalize the city through multi-disciplinary cultural events between November 2022 and January 2023. The plan is to make Bangkok a cultural metropolis and a major festival tourism destination that will help sustain the city’s social and economic development.

Mr. Sanon Wangsrangboon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, said that the year-end festivals are all about lighting, music and art. These festivals, which were and will be held in various places across the city, offer people the chance to end the year with memorable moments and welcome the New Year in high spirit. To catch up with the festive spirits and to align with Governor Chadchart Sittipunt’s year-round city festivals, BMA, in partnership with various stakeholders, has initiated “Colorful Bangkok” festive campaign, which spans 3 months from November 2022 to January 2023, and is divided into 3 themes: Creative Arts Festivals in November, Light Festivals in December and Music Festivals in January, for residents and tourists alike to enjoy. These events will help boost the local economy and public spending.

“Awakening Bangkok is recognized as one of the “The Festival of Lights” events in the BMA’s “Colorful Bangkok 2022” calendar. It symbolizes the opening of a space and illuminating the city and bringing it back to life,” Mr. Sanon ended.

Kittipong Prapattong, Executive Director Central Region of Tourism Authority of Thaiand (TAT), added: “The trend of foreign tourists traveling to Thailand is on a steady rise now that the COVID situation has eased. This is particularly evident during the year-end celebrations as holidaymakers around the world are looking for destinations where they can enjoy the long weekend. The government’s policy to open the country for tourists and the cooperation with the private sector in organizing festivals at various destinations across the country help attract tourists, making Thailand one of the world’s top destinations.

“Awakening Bangkok 2022 is a collaboration between the public and private sectors to create one of the greatest events of the year. Besides being spectacular, it also celebrates the opening of the country and the year-end tourism season excites both locals and visitors. We believe that such a “colorful” event will invigorate the tourism trend now that the pandemic has been largely resolved,” Mr. Kuttipong added.

Mrs. Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President – Business, of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), said: “TCEB sees the opportunity to develop the city and community with what is called “Festival Economy” as a way to promote a city’s sustainable development. The tourism trends and behaviors among the younger generation have changed to those of more choice and experience-driven, and festival creators will need to response to these changes. These groups of travelers have high purchasing power, so the travel volume of such groups will have  both direct and positive impacts and indirectly link to the economy of the host city and its surrounding communities.

At the heart of Awakening Bangkok is the promotion of all aspects of sustainability, a common goal of all partners including the main sponsor “Johnnie Walker” that has supported the event for three consecutive years.

The event signals the possibility of new ideas and creation through the opening of the space and the collaboration of the people.

“Awakening Bangkok 2022 takes place at a time when we are still searching for answers, when we are still exploring life’s many possibilities. We wish for conversations – and inspiration – on how to create a better tomorrow…one that will last forever. A tomorrow that is endless. The event reflects such a concept through the participation of new generation artists such as COTH, 27 June, and Alt+r .

“This year is special as we’ve created 2 routes for 2 sub-themes. The southern Bangrak route focuses on “Sustainability” and the northern Talad Noi route on “Living Evidence” through new locations. Each route has its highlights. For example, the southern route’s highlighted works are at the Swan hotel, Marine Police Lodge and East-Asiatic Building, the latter of which is a century-old Venetian-style structure that used to house the multinational trading company of the same name.  The northern route’s highlights include the Patina Bangkok, houses on the river bank and Phanu Rangsri Pier.” 

In addition to light installations by amazing local artists, visitors can expect to see an international showcase for the first time, curated by a team from iLight Singapore, a similar light and digital arts festival in Singapore. The work is on display at Warehouse 30. 

“This year, we have expanded our alliance to include the Hong Kong Economics and Trade office and Central Embassy and for the first time we have formed a partnership with favourite social media platform TikTok that has a goal of supporting Thai artists on its platform. There will be Tik Tok creators creating content at the event. Over the past years, Awakening Bangkok has been promoted via the English, Chinese and Japanese media to connect to the world. We believe that after the pandemic, Awakening Bangkok will be a top world destination for new experiences and cultural tourism.”

He added that: “Apart from promoting culture, Awakening Bangkok also plays a part in creating economic value. Awakening Bangkok  2021 held in March 2022 attracted more than 90,000 visitors over the 10 days despite being held while COVID-19 was still spreading, The event created an economic impact worth 115.64 million baht. We hope that this time around the festival will be even more welcome.

“We Believe that Awakening Bangkok will be a festival that helps boost the excitement of the city during this festive time of the year, especially among foreign tourists.  A report by UNESCO clearly indicates the global growth of cultural tourists which is driven by the changing behavior of tourists. They want to learn more about the traditions of the local community, discover and visit historical sites and experience different cultures as well as learning and immersing themselves in cultural products and services in each locality,” Mr. Pongsiri said.

The 5th edition of Awakening Bangkok sees almost 40 lighting installations illuminating more than 20 locations, most of which are long-forgotten structures, in Charoenkrung-Talad Noi neighborhoods, from 16-25 December 2022.

Thai Airways International (THAI) has announced it will recruit another 300 cabin crew from January 1 to 10 amid steady recovery for Thailand’s aviation industry.

The recruitment drive comes after travel demand increased significantly in the fourth quarter of this year, the national carrier said. It expects demand to rise further next year. Demand from China, Thailand’s biggest pre-pandemic tourism market, is expected to soar from January 8 when the country lifts its quarantine requirement for travellers.

“The airline plans to expand flight routes and increase the number of flights from the first quarter next year,” THAI said.

THAI listed the following requirements for applicants:

  • Must be a Thai national
  • Single with no children
  • Bachelor’s degree in any field
  • Not over 27 years old (born after January 1, 1996)
  • Height over 160cm for women and 165cm for men
  • Body mass index of 18.5 to 21 for women and 19-24.5 for men
  • Healthy with no need for eyeglasses
  • Able to swim for 50 metres
  • No tattoos visible while wearing uniform
  • Male applicants must have passed or have been exempted from military service
  • Fully vaccinated with at least two Covid-19 doses
  • English proficiency certification
