Thammasat University students have won the 16th L’Oréal Brandstorm 2019 national competition for their “fully integrated marketing strategy focused on accessing and communicating directly with the health-conscious consumer by leveraging technology and digital innovation”.

The team will represent Thailand at the L’Oréal Brandstorm 2019 in Paris this month, where it will compete for an all-expenses-paid chance to work at Station F, a startup hub, for three months.

The team, Nopparuj Krungkraipetch, Varalee Tananivit and Pimphat Chandrema, all fourth-year students at Thammasat Business School, released a statement: “Our project ‘SkinActiv, Smart Skincare Analyser and Treatment Device’ was born out of our research, which revealed that 87 per cent of Thai women choose products that are not suited to their personal skin type, resulting in ineffective treatment.

“The SkinActiv device comes with two modes: the diagnosis mode has a sensor that diagnoses the user’s skin condition; and the treatment mode helps to relax and rejuvenate facial skin while also treating acne, reducing wrinkles and opening the pores for effective product absorption. Both connect with a mobile application for easy and convenient use. We expect the SkinActiv device will act as an effective and convenient skin care aid, providing skin analysis, advice on skincare products and the treatments that are best suited to the user’s skin condition.”

Thai Union releases sixth annual sustainability report

Breaking News May 02, 2019 13:33

By The Nation

The Thai Union Group, a producer of seafood-based food products, released its annual Sustainability Report on Thursday, detailing the progress made in 2018 and the company’s performance against key performance indicators.

The company said in a press release that its sixth sustainability report demonstrates how its commitments and measures are helping the company drive meaningful improvements across the entire industry and achieve its vision to be the world’s most trusted seafood leader.

The report details how Thai Union is pursuing solutions for the significant challenge facing the industry, with a continued focus on four key programs: safe and legal labour, responsible sourcing, responsible operations and people and communities.

“Sustainability is a never-ending challenge. In the seafood industry those challenges can be vast in their scope. But with every challenge comes opportunity, and Thai Union works tirelessly to be at the forefront of positive change,” said Thiraphong Chansiri, CEO at Thai Union. “I am very proud of our continued progress in 2018.”

With sustainability at the heart of Thai Union’s business, the Sustainability Report is now also more sustainable – this is our first report that is fully digital, designed and tailored in a PDF format specifically for an online audience. Our 2018 report is also briefer than previous years, as we rely on our extensive SeaChange® website to ensure more transparent sharing of information, he said.

The 2018 report was prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards: Core Option and its Food Processing Sector Supplement (FPSS).

“2018 was another year of positive progress on sustainability,” said Dr. Darian McBain, Thai Union’s Global Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability. “From joining forces with the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI), to releasing our first annual Tuna Commitment Progress Report, to being ranked number one in the world in the Food Products Industry Index of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), Thai Union continues to deliver real and lasting changes.”

Thai Union is a participant in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and this report serves as our annual Communication on Progress (COP) to stakeholders.

The COP reports the company’s progress in implementing the Ten Principles of the UNGC within Thai Union’s sphere of influence, as well as the company’s progress in supporting the environmental and social responsibilities of the broader United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

LG announces first quarter operating profit of $801.25m

Corporate May 02, 2019 12:35

By The Nation

LG Electronics (LG) announced in a press release on Thursday consolidated sales of US$13.27 billion (Bt424 billion) and operating profit of US$801.25 million for the first quarter of 2019.

Although overall first-quarter revenues and operating income declined somewhat in 2019 versus 2018, the home appliance company reported record first-quarter sales and profits, the company said.

Operating income was 1,090 per cent higher than the fourth quarter of 2018, reflecting improved cost structures across major business units, the company added.

The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company generated first-quarter revenues of US$4.86 billion and operating profit of US$647.3 million, the highest quarterly revenue and operating income for the business unit in LG history.

Sales were especially strong in Europe and Asia, contributing to growth of 11 per cent year-on-year and 26 per cent quarter-on-quarter on robust sales of premium and growth products especially in the domestic Korean market.

The increase in operating profit of more than 30 per cent from the same period last year also can be attributed to the growing popularity of high-growth products such as Styler, clothes dryers, air purifiers and vacuum cleaners as well as effective cost reduction efforts.

The LG Home Entertainment Company reported first-quarter revenues of US$3.58 billion and operating profit of US$308.27 million, a decrease of 3 per cent from the same period the previous year due to seasonal weakness in demand and the lack of global sporting events.

Operating income increased significantly from the previous quarter thanks to greater marketing efficiencies and improvement cost structure. The launch of new 2019 premium products including OLED TVs, NanoCell TVs and large-screen Ultra HD TVs is expected to generate additional sales opportunities in the second quarter.

The LG Mobile Communications Company saw first-quarter sales of US$1.34 billion and narrowed its quarterly operating loss to US$181.05 million as LG continues to rebuild its smartphone business.

Operating results improved from the previous quarter as a result of stronger business structure.

Looking ahead, the launch of LG V50ThinQ 5G smartphone is expected to create positive momentum in the second quarter while the relocation of LG’s smartphone manufacturing center from Pyeongtaek, Korea to Haiphong, Vietnam will help improve profitability and LG’s global competitiveness in the second half of the year.

The LG Vehicle Component Solutions Company recorded first-quarter revenues of US$1.20 billion, a 61 per cent increase from the same period last year.

Increased sales at ZKW contributed to an improvement in operating results despite rising raw material prices and initial production costs associated with new projects.

Trends in the global auto market associated with low fuel prices and increased sales of luxury vehicles and SUVs will create more opportunities for LG’s automotive components business.

The LG Business Solutions Company posted first-quarter sales of US$556.58 million, 5 per cent higher than the previous quarter and 3 per cent lower than the first quarter a year ago.

Operating profit of US$49.38 million was 272 per cent higher than the previous quarter but 3 per cent lower year-on-year due to the impact of US tariffs on solar module imports and ongoing significant price erosion in major markets.

The information display business plans to improve profitability by expanding sales of premium displays and LED products.

KBank teams with Kumon to open new schools

Kasikornbank and Kumon, a world-class education franchiser from Japan, are collaborating to open tutoring schools under the Kumon franchise brand.

In a press release on Thursday KBank said it will grant up to 70 per cent of investment value without the need to worry about collateral. The partners aim to see 22 additional Kumon branches open in Bangkok and upcountry, bringing the total number of Kumon centres to more than 500 in 70 provinces nationwide by year-end.

Surat Leelataviwat, KBank Executive Vice President, said that Thais place great importance on education, as evidenced by parents eager to invest in their children’s education, whether at traditional schools or private tutoring schools.

Competition in the tutoring business has thus intensified. In the educational franchise business, there are currently 98 franchisers, with market turnover of around Bt42.5 billion in 2019, representing 17 per cent of the total franchise business market value in Thailand.

Secure franchise brands with bright prospects are crucial for those interested in owning and operating a franchise business.

In cooperation with Kumon (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the world’s largest after-school education franchiser having the world’s fourth highest number of branches after leading retail and restaurant franchise brands ranked by www.res.cloudinary.com, KBank offers KBank Franchise Solution to those interested in opening a Kumon centre or to Kumon franchisees in improving their existing centres.

Under this financial support program, KBank will offer loan up to 70 per cent of the total amount of investment and a borrower can choose a maximum instalment payment period throughout the franchise agreement term without the need to worry about collateral, thanks to a credit guarantee by Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG) along with fee at a special rate if the loan application and credit line are approved by September 30, 2019. For more information on KBank franchise credit, please call our Vendor Business Management Unit at Tel. 02-8674298.

Noboru Takahira, President of Kumon (Thailand) Co., Ltd., said that Kumon is a Japanese learning process invented over 60 years ago and is famous for developing skills in mathematics and foreign languages to students.

Kumon centre has expanded rapidly in both Japan and other countries. Currently, we have more than four million students and 25,000 centres in 50 countries.

Kumon is an education franchiser having the world’s highest number of branch. Kumon first entered Thailand in 1991 and there are over 96,000 students attending courses at 483 Kumon centres here now. We are dedicated to fully pursuing the potential of each individual student along with improving our courses and instructors. Kumon places importance on our students, thus enabling us to be resilient despite intense competition in the market.

KBank’s franchise cooperation with Kumon demonstrates the Bank’s intention to expand its business into the thriving education market. KBank will be the key partner in providing financial support to interested investors.

This year, Kumon expects to add 22 branches in Bangkok and upcountry, expanding the Kumon network to more than 500 branches in 70 provinces nationwide.

KBank stepping up push into digital lending

Corporate May 02, 2019 01:00

By THE NATION

KASIKORNBANK (KBank) will deepen its push into digital lending with a target to write Bt30 billion in such loans this year.

Wirawat Panthawangkun, senior vice executive president for the strategy and analytics division of KBank, said that the bank’s strategy this year focuses on growing the retail customers and business operators on digital. It has targeted to reach Bt10 billion in loans to retail customers through the digital system and Bt20 billion to business operators.

Last year marked the beginning of the bank’s digital lending, with loan extensions on the digital side coming in at under Bt10 billion that year.

The bank had earlier tried digital lending to its customers, including those receiving a salary via the bank with most loans extended to retail customers given the constraints of its data system and its preference for customers with less risk of defaulting.

This year, KBank will expand its digital lending to more target groups, including those who do not receive a salary via the bank and business operators. This is made possible by the bank’s improved digital lending system that can screen customers, assess risks and gather sufficient information, Wirawat said. He expects to see relatively high growth in digital lending this year compared to that of last year.

“Previously, our loan portfolio through digital lending had not grown sharply, not reaching 10 per cent, compared to the loan portfolio of all retail customers. The bank’s strategy this year and in the future will focus more on growing online in every group. We have to enlarge our base to new groups of customers. Today, our IT system is ready to penetrate the customer base or extend loans online to more customer groups, not only the bank’s customers. Therefore, the bank’s future growth will start from online and digital lending,” Wirawat said.

In the first quarter of this year, KBank’s digital lending was relatively small – below Bt5 billion – and most of the loans were extended to retail customers, independent shop operators and online shops. As existing customers of the bank, it was easier to assess their risks based on their accounts there, he said.

He conceded that the bank’s digital lending remained below its target in the quarter, while rushing to push for more digital lending from the second quarter onward.

Wirawat expected digital lending to touch one-third of KBank’s target or about Bt10 billion, which could boost it to reach Bt30 billion as targeted for the whole of this year.

“Our approval for digital lending is 100 per cent as the bank has itself picked the customers and offered digital lending to them through mobile banking. Today, we’ve expanded loans [via digital] to new customers, particularly those with recurring income. We charge customers cheaper interest rates on average on the [digital] loan than on those at branches, as customers on digital carry less risk,” he said.

KBank charges an average lending rate of 10-20 per cent for loans extended through digital lending, compared to the interest rate of no more than 28 per cent levied on personal loans.

NBTC to give guidance price for licence sale

Corporate May 02, 2019 01:00

By SIRIVISH TOOMGUM
THE NATION

THE National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will disclose an initial guidance price for the 700MHz licence by May 10, the regulator’s secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said.

The watchdog is expected to hold a public hearing on the price and the licence terms of payment in late May.

Takorn believes that the telecom operators would submit, by the May 10 deadline, their declarations of interest to take up the relief measures that were recently offered by the government.

The junta measures offer telecom operators a longer time to pay their 900MHz licence fees, while the digital TV broadcasters will have the option to return their licences to the NBTC. Those wanting to use this right have to inform the NBTC by May 10.

However, the relief measures include a condition that makes it mandatory for the 900MHz telecom licence holders to take part in the NBTC’s planned sale of the 700MHz spectrum slots, expected in June.

They would lose the extended payment facility if they do not take part in the sale and would have to pay their 900MHz licences as per the original payment schedule of four instalments.

Those operators electing to take up the government assistance can later change their minds and not purchase the 700MHz slots if they find they are unhappy with the upcoming price and related conditions of the licence sales.

The NBTC will reallocate the 700MHz totalling 45MHz for sale. It is expected to sell three licences, each totalling 15MHz, at between Bt25 billion and Bt27 billion. The telecom operators that grab the licences will start paying for the licence lots next October. The licence term is 15 years.

If no operator decides to acquire the 700MHz, the NBTC will put the licence up for auction.

The NBTC wants to see the telecom operators using the 700MHz to develop a 5G wireless broadband service.

If they do not take up the relief measures, Advanced Info Service’s subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network (AWN) and True Corp’s subsidiary TrueMove H Universal Communication (TUC) are scheduled to pay hefty final instalments of Bt59.574 billion and Bt60.218 billion, respectively, for their 900MHz licences in 2020.

Total Access Communication is due to pay its final instalment for the 900MHz of Bt30.024 billion in 2022.
