A retired Australian man was arrested at his home in Bang Kapi in Bangkok for allegedly posting online messages deemed to involve the sexual exploitation of minors.

A warrant was obtained and the raid carried out at 6am yesterday by a 30-strong team of Thai and Australian police and related agencies following an initial probe that found the illegal posts came from a house occupied by suspect Stephen Kim Le Cornu, 62, who has been in Thailand for 10 years.

A four-hour search did not yield any evidence linking the man to alleged child molestation. But police said the man confessed to posting the messages so he was initially charged with possession of child pornography – punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to Bt100,000 – and violating the Computer Crime Act.

Food vendor Anont Meksan, in white shirt, yesterday goes to Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon Nua district court to hear the verdict in the case against him of stabbing a dog to death. He was sentenced to two months detention.

THE BANGKOK food vendor who stabbed a dog to death because it had reportedly bitten his son was sentenced to two months in detention yesterday in accordance with the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Provision of Animal Welfare Act.

According to the lawsuit, Anont Meksan had on April 13 beaten the dog, “Chao Khao”, with a metal pipe and then stabbed it with a Samurai sword in a rage because it had reportedly bitten his son, which resulted in the child having to get five injections. The dog belonged to a resident in Soi Ramkhamhaeng.

Anont confessed to the wrongdoing in court and the judge halved the original sentence of four months in jail and changed the punishment to “detention” instead of “imprisonment”.

The Phra Nakhon Nua district court also granted him bail for Bt18,000, which was paid by his relatives. The family admitted that Anont’s behaviour was unacceptable and that they had made merit for the dog. They also called on the authorities to find a solution to the problem of stray dogs in the capital. John Dalley, the founder of the Soi Dog Foundation, was also present at the court room.

The court-ordered detention means the defendant will be held in a designated facility rather than in prison. This could be the defendant’s own home, another person’s residence or a facility such as a cell at a police station. The detainee must remain at the facility throughout the detention period, work and follow regulations. He will be allowed to pay for food bought from outside, wear his own clothes, will be allowed visitors for at least an hour a day as well as receive and send letters.

If the detainee is held at his own place or in someone else’s home, then he can work from home.

The sentence can be changed to imprisonment if the detainee violates regulations or fails to live up to the court’s conditions.

Technology Crime Suppression Division police yesterday escort Diego Fernado Gonzale Rojas, a Colombian model, to seek Criminal Court approval for his |detention pending an investigation into alleged offences.

THE CRIMINAL COURT yesterday granted bail to a Colombian male model facing computer crime and illegal employment charges.

Technology Crime Suppression Police yesterday sought the court’s approval to detain Diego Fernado Gonzale Rojas for 12 more days because they had to question three more witnesses.

He was arrested on Friday for allegedly working without a work permit.

Police said he entered and exited the country more than eight times and made more than Bt362,500 from modelling merchandise for several firms.

The offence of working without a work permit carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a Bt100,000 fine.

The police writ stated that from November 26 to December 3, the suspect claimed on social media that he had been threatened by Kitti Prateepnatsiri, owner of Elite Model Management (Thailand) and chairman of the Modelling Industry Association, and a Thai businessman involved in a project to stop illegal modelling and human trafficking in Thailand.

The message allegedly defamed Kitti, who then filed a complaint with police, who in turn sought an arrest warrant for Rojas on Thursday.

Bt200,000 bail

The Colombian model denied the charges. The court released him on Bt200,000 bail on the condition that he not leave the country without permission.

Two arrested, hunt on for two others including alleged ringleader; valuables worth more than Bt22 million stolen.

TWO COLOMBIAN who are allegedly members of a transnational criminal gang – which had stolen valuables worth Bt22 million from luxury homes in Bangkok – were arrested at a shopping mall in Sukhumvit Soi 77, police announced yesterday.

The burgaled houses included residences of a public prosecutor, a judge, a customs official and other well-to-do people

Christian Robeldo Donne and Gresson Joan Hernadez Gomez, both 27, were allegedly part of a four-member team that cracked safe boxes at luxury homes in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces on nine occasions in March and April.

They reportedly got away with valuables worth Bt22.193 million, including 62.84 grams of gold bars and 70 gold ornaments, said acting Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathaworn.

//

The gang used two sedans to scout targets at large housing estates, mostly during the daytime. They would press the doorbell to test if the house was unoccupied at the time before breaking in and cracking open safes to look for valuables, Sanit said.

The police team that investigated several theft cases linked to this gang spotted them on security-camera footage in Don Muang and Tha Kham districts.

Their actions were closely followed, and evidence gathered, before arrest warrants were sought for them from the Ratchadaphisek Criminal Court.

The two suspects were apprehended while allegedly carrying stolen gold ornaments, while their Thai female friend was also captured. Two other Colombian gangsters, including the leader identified only as Rodriguez, managed to flee. The Thai woman, who remained unamed, also faced a charge of possessing stolen items.

Sanit said the fugitives abandoned one vehicle used in the crime in Pattaya.

The two suspects were brought for interrogation at the city police office while some of their victims came to identify their stolen items and to file complaints against the duo, Sanit added.

They now face charges of theft, breaking into houses at night, using getaway vehicles, and having in their possession stolen items.

Sanit said the gang was more afraid of alarms than security cameras, so homeowners should consider installing such systems or find someone – a worker, neighbour or police – to monitor their houses.

He said police would hunt for the two fugitives and would also contact an international delivery-service firm so they could watch out for criminals because the gangsters reportedly sent some stolen items back home.

Firearms, ammunition and communications equipment reportedly confiscated during raids on the houses of Pheu Thai Party politicians in Samut Prakan are displayed at a police press conference yesterday.

HOUSES of Pheu Thai Party politicians, including former members of Parliament, were among 14 locations in Samut Prakan targeted yesterday in coordinated raids involving more than 100 police and military officers.

The raids came just a little more than a week after one targeting locations that included houses of Pheu Thai politicians. However, authorities dismissed perceptions that the latest searches were politically motivated.

Among the targeted locations were houses and offices of Worachai Hema and Pracha Prasobdee, both former Pheu Thai Party MPs and key leaders of the red-shirt United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). Worachai had earlier criticised Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for having “extreme right-wing ideas”.

Police said they found a large cache of firearms during the raids, including rifles, shotguns, pistols and ammunition. According to police, communication radios were also found with the frequency adjusted to the official band.

Police charged Worachai with illegal possession of firearms and communication devices, and Pracha with operating a communication station without permission. Many of the firearms allegedly found during the raids were confiscated for examination to determine whether they were registered.

Deputy national police chief Lt-General Sriwara Ransibrahmanakul, who led yesterday’s raids, said they were conducted under an order by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), as part of a policy to crack down on influential figures.

“This has nothing to do with politics. Please don’t try to create a connection. We are just cracking down on local influential figures,” he said. Sriwara is director of the Royal Thai Police’s centre for the suppression of influential figures and hired gunmen.

Early last week, Sriwara led concerted raids on 12 locations in Nakhon Pathom that included the house of Pheu Thai politician Chaiya Sasomsap. Several firearms and ammunition were found during the raids last Tuesday, which involved more than 300 police and military officers.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday that the raids were “just part of a routine operation” and had nothing to do with politics. “The responsible authorities have the list of their targets,” he said.

However, Worachai, a red-shirt leader, said he was not mafia and the raid on his house might have been a reaction to his remark about Prayut on Wednesday when he slammed the junta chief’s move to silence people during the lead-up to the August referendum.

He said the authorities wanted to arrest him and bring him to an “attitude adjustment” session.

Before the search, he said, three people in the house including his son were forced to move out and his security cameras were broken. During the two-hour search, he said, journalists were stopped from entering his housing estate to cover the raid. The joint force also invaded Pracha’s residence and allegedly seized 11 guns and two radio sets.

In light of the authorities’ move yesterday, Pheu Thai politician Suchart Lainamngoen, a former MP for Lop Buri, said he suspected the raids targeted Pheu Thai politicians and key red-shirt members rather than influential figures. He said that if the junta really aimed to crack down on fat cats, it should suppress drug dealers and gangsters.

Corpse of man appearing to be Asian had balls of suspicious substance in stomach

POLICE SAY around 60 balls of an unidentified off-white substance were found inside the stomach of a fair-skinned Asian man – whose body was found on Sunday in a large bag in Bangkok’s Klong Ong Ang waste filter.

Institute of Forensic Medicine director Pol Maj-General Pornchai Suteerakune said yesterday they were doing further tests to determine what the balls, each of which weighed 10 to 50 grams, were.

It was believed the 155-centimetre-tall man may have been a drug runner attempting to smuggle illegal drugs via “body packing” – swallowing the substance in plastic bags or condoms to avoid police detection, he said.

A source at the institute said the substance was suspected to be crystal methamphetamine or “ice”.

Wounds on man’s body were not life-threatening, so it was suspected that he died from the drugs inside him bursting or leaking, the source said.

Another source from the police investigation said earlier he believed the substance in the man’s stomach was an illicit drug smuggled by “body packers” into a third country.

Police are checking information on Pakistani, Nepalese, Indian |and Bangladeshi passengers who arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport over the last week, as some |witnesses claimed they saw the |bag with his body in it last Thursday.

A source at the Narcotic Suppression Division said the| gang may have used Thailand as a transit point for drug smuggling. It was suspected to have three routes for smuggling; from India or Nepal to China; from India, Nepal or the United Arab Emirates to store in Thailand before going to China; or from Malaysia through Thailand to China.

Acting city police chief Lt-General Sanit Mahathaworn said police were waiting to confirm what the substance was. He said investigators would check nearby areas and examine security camera footage to see if the killer(s) disposed of the body in the canal.

Deputy police spokesman Maj-General Songpol Wattanachai said they would take up to four days to probe the case.

The bag the body was found in also contained a bag of white powder, a pack of tobacco and a pack of betel nuts popular among Myanmar, Indian and Pakistani nationals.

It is believed the man died three days prior to the body being discovered near Samranrat junction in Phra Nakhon district.

An ongoing investigation suggests that the Spanish prime suspect in a gruesome murder may have had at least two accomplices.

Artur Segarra Princep is accused of killing and dismembering fellow Spaniard David Bernat.

“We believe the victim’s body parts were gradually dumped along the Chao Phraya River and it’s likely that more than two people have played a role here,” said Metropolitan Police acting chief Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn yesterday.

Police began investigating the grisly crime last month after several human body parts were found floating in various locations in the river. DNA tests confirmed the body parts belonged to Bernat, who was reported missing.

Earlier this month, as the police investigation intensified, Segarra Princep fled Thailand to Cambodia, where he was arrested.

POLICE have found DNA traces of a Spaniard murdered and dismembered in Bangkok in the prime suspect’s condominium.

DNA traces of two men and four women were found inside the condo of Artur Segarra Princep, also from Spain.

“Our investigation is more than 80 per cent complete and we believe evidence already gathered is convincing enough to prove him guilty in court,” Pol General Panya Mamen said yesterday, in his capacity as the chief investigator.

Panya said available evidence clearly suggested that Segarra must have detained, tortured and killed David Bernat at a condominium in the Rama 9 area in Bangkok and then dismembered his body there.

“Money is the motive,” Panya said.

Segarra emerged as the prime suspect earlier this month, after pictures from security cameras showed Segarra had withdrawn money from Bernat’s account via various ATMs.

Girlfriend’s information ‘useful’

Body parts of Bernat were found floating in the Chao Phraya River at various locations since last month. Police investigations confirmed that those body parts belonged to Bernat – a Spaniard who was reported missing.

Central Scientific Crime Detection Division chief Pol Maj-General Tawatchai Mekprasertsuk said police also checked the Bernat’s condo on Sukhumvit Soi 8 and Segarra’s townhouse on Ramkhamhaeng Soi 174.

“We can’t disclose details. But we can say that we found the victim’s DNA in the townhouse,” Tawatchai said.

Deputy National Police chief Pol Maj-General Suwaj Jangyodsuk said police were unable to disclose key information on the case at this stage because doing so might affect the ongoing investigation.

Panya said Segarra’s girlfriend, Pridsana Saen-ubon, had been a key witness.

“She has provided very useful |information,” he said.

She said that Segarra quickly left a bar in her hometown of Surin after he was recognised by locals who saw his photo on a news bulletin.

Police quickly located Segarra’s motorcycle near the Thai-Cambodian border.

The following day, Cambodian authorities apprehended Segarra in Sihanoukville, then handed him over to Thai officials.

Panya said at this point, police still did not know exactly where Segarra dumped his victim’s body parts and dismemberment tools.

“So, we are checking recordings from more security cameras,” he said
