In partnership with Thailand’s Public Health Ministry, EGAT, and TGO, Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) has invested 60 million baht to provide solar panel systems, including yearly maintenance, to generate electricity for 40 community hospitals countrywide by 2032.

The solar panels can generate electricity up to a 25-year period. The project will help reduce the hospitals’ carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions more than 17,300 tons over the next ten years. Furthermore, it will reduce the electricity expenses up to 400,000 baht per year for each hospital.

At the MoU signing ceremony, Mr. Eiichi Koito, President & CEO of Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) remarked: “As a part of Thai society, we want to see the better lives of Thai people. ‘Solar for Lives’ project has been initiated as our CSR direction ‘To contribute and grow with Thai society’ in three areas: Education, environment, and health. The project will provide Thais better health through supported hospitals while creating a better environment towards carbon neutral direction.”

“Our company has a clear direction and consistent actions towards a carbon-neutral society,” he added. “We installed solar panels at our production facility’s rooftop in Laem Chabang, Chonburi, reducing C02 emissions by more than 6,100 tons per year. Our Outlander PHEV is the most environmentally friendly vehicle, according to the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). In addition, we also support carbon emission reduction through 60 Years 60 Rai reforestation project.”

Community hospitals to receive solar panels have been selected based on the recommendations by the Public Health Ministry, their power requirements, and physical structure.

Dr Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, Public Health Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary, said: “Hospitals use a huge amount of energy for 24/7 operations. With stable electricity from solar panels, community hospitals can increase the efficiency of medical services and minimize the gap in healthcare access for people in surrounding communities. This project can support the Ministry’s missions by creating sustainable energy for hospitals, in line with the government’s strategic direction towards a carbon-neutral society.”

Besides the solar systems, Mitsubishi Motors Thailand has also lent one unit of Mitsubishi flagship electric car, Outlander PHEVs, to each hospital to be used for their medical services. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV does not only provide a reliable source of electricity in an emergency or blackout, but it can also be an alternative option for medical personnel who travel to nearby communities in a 20-kilometre range to provide medical treatments, as the vehicle has an electric-only range of up to 55 kilometres in addition to a hybrid range of over 500 kilometres.

Thailand eyeing food exports to China after ban on Taiwan imports

Thailand is attempting to fill the void in China left by Beijing’s ban on more than 2,000 Taiwanese food imports amid rising tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Thailand eyeing food exports to China after ban on Taiwan imports

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Friday that the Thai trade attaché in Beijing has been instructed to gather a list of products that Thailand can export to China to make up for reduced supply from Taiwan.

“We found demand in food and beverage products, including instant noodles, frozen fish, snacks, fruits and various drinks,” Jurin said.

China imposed targeted economic sanctions on Taiwan, which it considers to be part of its territory, after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a high-profile visit to the island on Wednesday.

Beijing barred shipments from more than 100 Taiwanese exporters of food ranging from fresh produce to baby food, confectionery and pastries.

Jurin, who also doubles as deputy prime minister, said on Friday that Thailand’s imports and exports had not been affected by the tensions between China and Taiwan.

He added that his ministry’s Department of International Trade Promotion would hold an online business-matching event for Thai exporters and Chinese importers on August 24-25. About 150 Thai exporters and some 200 importers from China and Hong Kong have agreed to take part.

The commerce minister said the event would help bolster Thailand’s exports.

In the first six months of the year, Thai exports totalled 5 trillion baht, a 12.9 per cent increase from the same period last year. Last year’s exports totalled 8.5 trillion baht.

Weaker dollar, gold sell-offs bolster baht

The baht opened at 35.82 to the US dollar on Friday, strengthening from Thursday’s close of 36.

Weaker dollar, gold sell-offs bolster baht

The currency is expected to move between 35.70 and 36 during the day, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool predicted.

Poon said the baht might swing sideways or strengthen more than investors expect due to the weakening of the dollar and the selling off of gold.

Moreover, the baht is supported by the hope of the Thai tourism sector’s recovery.

The currency market, however, is highly volatile as the US employment data is expected to be revealed soon.

If the data is better than expected, then the market may be concerned that the US Federal Reserve will increase the interest rate, which will cause the dollar to strengthen.

Poon said some importers, especially energy companies, will buy the dollar after the baht strengthens beyond the 36 to the dollar level, while some investors may sell the dollar for profits.

The baht’s new support level would be at 35.70 to 35.80 to the dollar while its resistance level is 36.20 to the dollar.

Strong increase in the first half of the year: Porsche AG significantly increased its sales revenue and operating profit in the first six months of 2022 – to 17.92 billion euros and 3.48 billion euros respectively.

Porsche increases sales revenue, operating profit and return on sales

The return on sales in the first half of 2022 rose to 19.4 per cent from 16.9 per cent in the previous-year period. In the first six months of 2021, sales revenue was 16.53 billion euros and operating profit was 2.79 billion euros.

This represents a growth of 8.5 per cent in revenue and 24.6 per cent in operating profit. The Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer has therefore once again underscored its ability to operate successfully in a challenging environment.

At the same time, Porsche is pushing ahead with its strategy for a sustainable future and redefining the concept of modern luxury.

“We are proud to have made significant gains in sales revenue and earnings in this difficult market environment. It’s been a real team effort by the workforce and management,” says Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Executive Board for Finance and IT at Porsche AG. From January to June, Porsche delivered 145,860 vehicles to customers (same period last year: 153,656). The increase in return on sales to 19.4 per cent in the first half of the year was mainly driven by a strong product mix, currency effects and other business sectors.

In view of the H1 2022 performance, Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, is optimistic about the future: “Porsche stands for sporty, modern luxury. With this, we see ourselves as well positioned in the sweet spot of the automotive industry.” Expert studies forecast growth in luxury sports cars, fully electric vehicles and luxury SUVs in years to come. “We believe Porsche is very well positioned in each of these areas,” says Blume. “We believe we are ahead of other luxury automotive manufacturers with our strong focus on sustainability. We take a holistic view of sustainability: ecological, social and value-based. Our ambition is to be net carbon neutral in 2030.”

Automotive net cash flow in the first half of 2022 was 2.39 billion euros (previous year:2.60 billion euros). “Despite continued robust investment in our future projects, we were again able to generate strong automotive net cash flow”, adds CFO Lutz Meschke. “We believe our cash flow focus is paying off here.” Despite an ongoing difficult supply situation and elevated raw material and energy prices, Porsche AG is aiming for return on sales between approximately 17 and 18 per cent for the year 2022, with sales revenue of between approximately 38 and 39 billion euros. Over the medium term, Porsche has a return on sales target of between approximately 17 and 19 per cent.

The outlook for 2022 is based on certain assumptions, including no significant deterioration of economic conditions or the COVID-19 pandemic in Porsche’s main markets, no significant disruptions in the supply chain, especially relating to semiconductors, energy and materials parts and components, no material price increases of raw materials and no further escalation of the war in Ukraine, amongst others. Porsche has the long-term ambition to achieve Group return on sales of more than 20 per cent: “The global economy is facing challenging times, but the current figures for the first half of 2022 give us confidence in our resilience”, says CFO Lutz Meschke.

SEEK, the parent company of leading jobs platforms JobStreet and JobsDB, strengthens its commitment to help stamp out unfair hiring practices and put an end to modern slavery across the region with the appointment of Scott Stiles as the company’s Special Advisor of Fair Hiring in Asia.

SEEK strengthens fair hiring commitment with new appointment

The Global Slavery Index estimates that there are six modern slavery victims for every 1,000 people in the Asian countries where SEEK operates in — Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

This is equivalent to 2.9 million men, women, and children living in modern slavery in the region .

Peter Bithos, CEO of Asia, SEEK, shared, “As an organization that aims to improve millions of lives through better careers, we have a responsibility to ensure our marketplace is a safe, digital environment for job seekers across the region, and we take this seriously. We are committed to providing trusted and valid platforms for workers to find decent jobs and for employers to hire ethically, safeguarding against the risk of modern slavery in advertising job opportunities that could be deceptive in recruiting for forced labour. We’ve been conducting an APAC-wide search to find an executive who can be fully dedicated to this issue and spearhead our efforts for some time. Bringing Scott into our team is only the beginning of our continuous, long-term effort to help end pockets of slavery in the region.”

Peter Bithos, CEO of Asia, SEEKPeter Bithos, CEO of Asia, SEEK

In his role, Scott will be responsible for identifying risks and vulnerabilities in SEEK’s processes and platforms that could be exploited by unscrupulous actors, and work with the relevant teams to address them.

He will champion initiatives that can help provide job seekers with clarity and awareness of their rights and warnings about known unfair hiring practices, particularly affecting migrant, manual, and domestic workers so that candidate interactions with SEEK’s employment platforms result in safe and fair employment outcomes.

Scott will also be accountable for leading broader initiatives with partners and governments across the region to promote fair-hiring practices with the long-term aspiration to end modern slavery in all its forms.

Scott will report to Michele Manigart, Chief Strategy Officer of Asia.

Commenting on his appointment, Michele said, “We are delighted to welcome Scott to SEEK, and we believe he will be instrumental in advancing our commitment to fair hiring in Asia. SEEK will not only benefit from his experience and deep understanding of the region’s labour rights and issues, but also from his clear passion for human rights and strong desire to make real impact in this area.”

Scott said, “I have always believed that forced labour and unfair hiring are solvable world problems. The progress we have seen in the last nine years has shown this to be true, but these are deeply ingrained issues that require regionwide market intervention over a sustained period of time. SEEK’s platforms make us uniquely well positioned to drive this change. I couldn’t be more excited to work with Michele, Peter, and the team to guide this effort!”

Aiming to support and strengthen fair hiring in Thailand, Duangporn Promon, Managing Director of Jobs DB Recruitment (Thailand) Limited, said, “The appointment of Seek Asia’s Special Advisor of Fair Hiring strengthens the company’s commitment in doing business in a way that respects job seekers’ rights. In Thailand, we constantly raise awareness in the job platform industry. JobsDB communicated and educated entrepreneurs about equal employment opportunities in the previous year. As a result, some entrepreneurs understand and begin to adjust the recruitment policy to collaborate in looking beyond social discrimination and providing potential job seekers with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. This year, the emphasis is on the job seeker’s Fundamental Rights, which the employer should respect. Fair labour practices under human rights principles outlined in Labor Law, and compensation and benefits are also included. We believe that fair hiring is a success factor that increases the value of the business and improves its competitiveness, resulting in sustainable business growth.”

Bank of Ayudhaya (BAY) announced on Thursday that it had not been affected by financial trouble impacting Zipmex Thailand after the latter’s customers saw their crypto coins disappear into thin air.

Krungsri: We are not affected by Zipmex’s financial woes

BAY said its subsidiary Krungsri Finnovate invested only 1 per cent of shares in Zipmex Thailand for about 66 million baht to study fintech technologies. The shares were purchased in September last year.

Zipmex had announced that its clients who deposited coins in partner Zipmex Global’s ZipUp+ saw their deposits frozen because Zipmex Global lost the coins to two crypto lenders that were hit by losses. But Zipmex Thailand said it would gradually return the coins to its clients once it received fresh funds.

BAY pointed out that the investment in Zipmex Thailand constituted only 3 per cent of all investments by Krungsri Finnovate.

As of June 30, the value of Krungsri Finnovate’s investment in Zipmex Thailand was a mere 0.0028 per cent of BAY’s total assets, the bank added.

Inflation and climate change will be the top priorities for the APEC Business Advisory Council (Abac) meeting in Thailand from November 13 to 16.

Inflation, global warming to top APEC council meeting agenda in Nov

ABAC 2022 chairman Kriengkrai Thiennukul said the agenda was the result of a discussion at the third council meeting in Ha Long, Vietnam, from July 26 to 29.

The council agreed to field five urgent proposals for the APEC leaders’ summit. All five proposals aim to accelerate the region’s economic recovery and re-establish momentum for long-term, inclusive and resilient growth, he noted.

The five comprise enhancing regional economic integration by supporting more free trade agreements, developing a foundation of digital infrastructure and a digital ecosystem, promoting sustainable practices for micro, small and medium enterprises, ensuring sustainable food security and implementing macroeconomics and financial measures to increase productivity and growth.

We believe these proposals will serve as a guide for future sustainable development in all sectors,” he said.

However, Kriengkrai pointed out that geopolitical tensions, high energy and food prices and the severe impact of climate change pose additional challenges for Asia-Pacific business leaders to address.

He expected to present the final version of the proposals to the APEC leaders’ summit later this year after the next ABAC meeting in November.

The proposals will enlighten the government sector on business needs and solutions for all parties involved.

Meanwhile, Poj Aramwattananont, ABAC Thailand member and APEC CEO Summit 2022 chairman, highlighted the increased emphasis on food security and sustainability through the use of technologies and a bio-circular green economy.

“ABAC calls for double efforts in facilitating trade, deterring export prohibitions and restrictions, and cross-border cooperation relating to food ecosystems to ensure the private sector takes part in APEC’s food security policy, which will be of great importance in the future,” Poj pointed out.

The council meeting concluded with a shared commitment to help the Asia-Pacific region advance towards wealth, growth, and inclusive sustainability, Kriengkrai said.

“The business sector’s voice can shape the future of regional cooperation because it reflects the real needs of those who play a key role in driving the economy,” he added.
