Thai Revenue Dept reclassifying digital tokens

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2022

The Revenue Department is drafting classification criteria for digital tokens to ensure that tax collection does not hinder digital-asset development, director-general Lavaron Sangsnit said on Sunday.

Certain kinds of digital tokens could be exempted from value-added tax (VAT), while others will not be subject to taxes like other forms of investment, Lavaron said.

He added that the new classification criteria will put each kind of token in a category based on its asset type.

“For example, tokens that can be traded like shares will be treated and taxed like shares. The same goes for tokens that can be used as debentures,” he said.

Lavaron said the classification criteria will also help investors to identify types of utility tokens according to their different uses.

In March, the government exempted VAT and personal income tax deduction on trade of cryptocurrencies and digital tokens until December 31 next year.

The measure aims to support development of infrastructure, payment systems and the digital economy.

Currently the Royal Decree on Digital Assets Business classifies digital assets as either cryptocurrencies or digital tokens.

It defines cryptocurrencies as electronic data units created as a medium of exchange for the acquisition of goods, services or other rights.

Digital tokens are defined as electronic data units specifying the right of a person to participate in an investment, or to acquire specific goods, services or other rights under an agreement between the issuer and the holder.

Separately, the Securities and Exchange Commission is preparing tighter controls on digital assets trading to protect investors after a series of high-profile bankruptcies in the global industry.

Baht weakens slightly as crucial US Fed meeting looms

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2022

The baht opened at 34.84 to the US dollar on Tuesday, weakening slightly from Friday’s close of 34.79 after the Constitution Day holiday on Monday.

The currency will likely move between 34.75 and 34.95 against the greenback during the day and between 34.50 and 35.20 during the week, Krungthai market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon cautioned that the baht could fluctuate and weaken amid a possible sell-off of risky assets. Last week saw foreign investors make net sales of 5 billion baht in the Thai stock market.

Poon said the baht would also face downward pressure if the gold price falls and triggers purchases.

For the dollar, he advised investors to look out for US inflation concerns and the US Federal Reserve’s decision on the interest rate at its two-day meeting starting today (Tuesday, US time). Dollar strengthening is forecast if the Fed signals an interest rate ceiling higher than market expectations of 5.25%.

Poon added that the dollar’s strengthening might slow if the European Central Bank and Bank of England continue to raise their rates.

He also advised investors to use hedging tools such as options to manage risks in a highly volatile currency mark.

Thailand’s 10 border special economic zones log THB37bn investment

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

Thailand’s 10 border special economic zones (SEZs) have drawn investment worth 37 billion baht so far, the government reported on Monday. Infrastructure projects to support business in the 10 SEZs are also 89% complete, government spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is confident the economic zones – located in Tak, Mukdahan, Trat, Sa Kaew, Songkhla, Nong Khai, Narathiwat, Chiang Rai, Nakhon Phanom and Kanchanaburi – will boost development and income for rural people in the remote provinces, she added.

The border SEZs were initiated in 2015 to tap potential for trade and investment from neighbouring countries and the Asean Economic Community. The Board of Investment offers privileges for companies setting up operations in the zones.

Ratchada outlined progress in five aspects of border SEZ development.

– Private investment: Since 2015, private firms have invested about 37 billion baht in the 10 SEZs.

– Infrastructure: Major projects include the construction of the Trat-Hat Lek highway and Highway 211 from Chiang Khan to Nong Khai. Overall, infrastructure construction is 89% complete.

– Development of Treasury Department land: The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and private firms have leased special zones in Sa Kaew and Songkhla to build industrial zones that have already attracted investors. Special zones in Trat, Nakhon Phanom and Kanchanaburi have been leased by investors.

– Immigrant workers: One-stop migrant worker management centres have been established in all 10 provinces and approved employment of 508,000 workers from neighbouring countries.

– Centres to aid daily recruitment from neighbouring countries: The centres have facilitated the employment of some 27,000 workers who cross the border back and forth each day.

Adidas reveals ‘Al Hilm’, the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Finals

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2022

Bangkok, 11 December 2022 – Today, adidas reveals Al Hilm – the Official Match Ball for the semifinals and final of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Al Hilm, which translates as “The Dream” in Arabic, follows on from the Official Match Ball of the group stages, Al Rihla, which translates as “The Journey”.

Both balls feature the same technology, engineered to support the highest game speeds as they travel faster in flight than any other World Cup ball. Al Hilm is revealed with a unique graphic design, befitting of an occasion as historic as the final matches of a FIFA World Cup™.

The design is set on a textured gold base color which features a subtle triangular pattern, drawing inspiration from the sparkling deserts of the region that surround the city, the color of the FIFA World Cup™ trophy, and the pattern of the Qatar flag. Bold red accents complement the graphic, reflecting both the generative architecture of Qatar, and once again, the country’s flag.

Adidas reveals ‘Al Hilm’, the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Finals

The ball encapsulates its namesake, Al Hilm – “The Dream”, as it connects to the twilight hours, where the red sky meets the desert sand at dusk – a time when dreams are set to come true under the floodlights of the Lusail Stadium – the stage for the Final.

“Al Hilm represents a beacon of light on the power of sport and football to bring the world together. Millions will tune in from almost every country around the globe, united by their passion for the game. We wish all teams involved in the final stages of the tournament the best of luck as they compete on the largest stage that football has to offer” said Nick Craggs, General Manager – Football, adidas.

Adidas reveals ‘Al Hilm’, the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ Finals

Designed from the inside out using data from rigorous testing in adidas labs, wind tunnels, and on-pitch, Al Hilm features the same new panel shape and surface textures introduced for Al Rihla:

  • CTR-CORE – An innovative core within the ball that is tuned to support fast, precise play with maximum shape and air retention
  • SPEEDSHELL – The ball’s polyurethane (PU) skin featuring micro and macro textures and a 20-piece panel shape

Utilizing the latest technological advances in ball design, Al Hilm includes the same unprecedented adidas ‘Connected Ball’ technology as Al Rihla, which has proven invaluable in helping match officials making faster and more accurate decisions during this World Cup.

Combined with player position data, the innovation offers Video Assistant Referees instant data, to help optimize decision making for a seamless fan experience. By combining the ball tracking data captured by sensors within the ball and applying artificial intelligence, the new technology provides an automated offside alert to the VAR team.

The ball was also designed with the environment at its heart – all components have been carefully considered, and Al Hilm is the first World Cup semifinals and final ball made using only water-based inks and glues.

CP’s arm in Philippines lauded for creating new jobs, boosting sustainability

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

Apart from helping make the food industry more sustainable, Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines Corporation (CPFPC) has also created jobs for 3,000 Filipinos.

The Thai Embassy’s Trade Centre in Manila said on Monday that CPFPC has also helped develop the Philippines’ livestock and aquaculture industries using technology and high-quality breeding methods to boost productivity.

CPFPC is a subsidiary of Charoen Pokphand Foods.

“The corporation has not only helped boost the image of Thailand and its products but also strengthened the trade relationship between the two countries,” said Janthana Chotimunee, minister counsellor (commercial) at the embassy.

CPFPC was established in the Philippines’ Bulacan province in 2010 with an investment of more than $2 billion (69.6 billion baht).

“CPFPC is now a large manufacturer in the Philippines’ livestock and aquaculture industries,” Janthana said.

She added that Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr is wooing foreign investors to help rebuild his country’s economy in the fallout of the pandemic.

“As of August, the Philippines has welcomed 74 public-private partnerships worth 2.25 trillion pesos [1.41 trillion baht],” she said.

However, she said, Thai investors should closely study the Philippines’ investment laws as they are quite complicated.

How Thailand’s poorest region is tapping BCG innovations for riches

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2022

Stephanie Adair

Thailand’s much-publicised Bio-Circular Green (BCG) plan to boost the grassroots economy faces its biggest test in the rice-basket Northeast, the country’s poorest region.

However, visitors to the “Isan BCG Expo 2022” in Khon Kaen are now seeing how BCG is being put into action under the region’s strategy to become an Asean trade and economic hub.

The Northeast’s largest exhibition of sustainable innovations is being hosted by the Khon Kaen Innovation Centre (KKIC) and sugar/bio-energy giant Mitr Phol Group together with 50 companies.

Under the spotlight are biotechnology innovations and investment opportunities for local and CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) businesses seeking to expand in the Northeast.

How Thailand’s poorest region is tapping BCG innovations for riches

The showcase is divided into three forums. The Isan BCG Forum 2022 features more than 40 sessions led by 80 experts from various fields to build BCG knowledge and understanding. Elsewhere, in-depth lessons are offered at the Essence of BCG talks while the Green Stage is showcasing sustainable agriculture practices designed to boost business growth.

Northeast culture is also being promoted in activities including Isan Serng & Sound (music), an Isaan gastronomy chef’s table, and a walking-street exhibition divided into Creative, Innovative and Green zones filled with booths from all over Isaan.

The four-day “Isan BCG Expo 2022” runs until today (December 12) at Khon Kaen Innovation Centre.
