FTI wants government to continue stimulus packages amid fragile economic situation
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022
Nongluck Ajanapanya
Thailand’s industrial community is urging the government to give people a new round of stimulus packages as New Year’s gifts.
Montri Mahaplerkpong, vice president of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), said at a press conference on Wednesday that the country is still fragile so the government should support domestic consumption as a buffer against economic slowdown and mild inflation.
However, he believes that for the stimulus package to be effective the minimum spending limit should be raised and the rights expanded to cover more people.
“For example, the ‘Khon La Krueng phase 6’ [co-payment subsidy] should be raised to a minimum of 3,000 baht, while the number of people eligible for the ‘Rao Tiew Duay Gan’ [We Travel Together] scheme should be increased to 2 million,” Montri said.
He also proposed that the government reduce the cost of “float time” (Ft) in the electricity bill from January to April 2023.
The goal is to reduce the cost burden on entrepreneurs in a volatile economy while also keeping Thailand competitive with other countries.
The suggestion was made during the October 2022 release of the Thailand Industry Sentiment Index (TISI). The most recent report demonstrates strong confidence in the country’s industries, as every factor of the index improved, including total orders, total sales volume, production volume, operating costs, and profits.
The TISI was 93.1 in October 2022, up from 91.8 in September and rising for the fifth month in a row. The government’s decision to downgrade Covid-19 from a serious infectious disease to a contagious disease aided the rise.
In addition, the industrial sector expanded in tandem with the recovery of domestic consumption and the tourism industry. In the export sector, trading partners began to pre-order products for delivery at the end of the year, reflecting the previous month’s increase in the orders index and overall sales.
Meanwhile, the cost confidence index improved as a result of the government’s energy measures, and the chip shortage problem began to improve.
However, the month’s negative factors included flooding in many provinces which damaged agricultural areas, reduced farmers’ income, and impeded transport, affecting the construction sector. Furthermore, small and medium-sized entrepreneurs are concerned about rising interest rates on loans, as well as an unstable global economy.
The survey, conducted in October 2022, of 1,310 enterprises from the FTI’s 45 industry sectors, revealed that the most concerning factors for entrepreneurs were fuel prices and loan interest rates.
Other factors, such as the global economy, the domestic economy, the political situation, the exchange rate, and the pandemic situation all contributed to easing enterprises’ concerns.
Montri said that the TISI is expected to fall in the next three months due to concerns about the global economic slowdown and geopolitical threats, particularly the Russian-Ukrainian war, which poses a risk to Thailand’s exports.
Live broadcast of football World Cup ‘would increase money circulation in economy’
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022
Nearly 76 billion baht is expected to circulate during the 2022 World Cup, the president of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said on Wednesday.
Thanawat Phonwichai said that 75.815 billion baht would circulate during the World Cup in Qatar beginning this month, slightly lower than the 76.897 billion baht during the 2018 World Cup.
Of the total, 18.561 billion baht will be spent on buying consumer goods, celebrations, electric appliances, or signal receivers, while 57.253 billion baht will be out of the economic system, or gambling, but it will be lower than the previous World Cup due to the current economic situation.
On average, people will spend around 1,416 baht on gambling per match, or 21,580 baht for this tournament.
However, people must follow closely if the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) approves 1.6 billion baht required to purchase broadcasting rights.
If the broadcasting rights are acquired, it would encourage people to spend more by creating a football festival atmosphere because people will buy football kits and eat outside more often at restaurants, entertainment venues, and sport equipment stores, while the media will report the news during the World Cup, which would stimulate the spending.
However, the money in the economic system could decrease by 5 to 10 billion baht if there were no broadcast, he said.
“Live broadcasting will make the atmosphere lively and will cause people to celebrate. It will generate 18.561 billion baht in the economic system.”
He said it would be higher than the 17.901 billion baht generated during the 2018 World Cup.
He forecast that it would stimulate the economy in the fourth quarter to grow by 4 to 4.5%, generating revenue at the end of the year of 35 billion baht, which would help achieve this year’s GDP target of 3% to 3.5%.
Thanawat added that the 1.6 billion baht budget for the broadcast must be approved, as it would help generate revenue back to the government while also making people happy, similar to the welfare card, “Khon La Khrueng” (Let’s Go Halves) scheme, or tourism schemes.
SEC warns the public of risks to investments in crypto-mining businesses
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022
The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday urged the public to exercise utmost caution when deciding to invest in crypto-mining businesses, warning that such enterprises are risky and not monitored by the SEC.
The watchdog posted the warning on its website, saying Thai investors must take several risks into account.
The SEC said it had to issue the warning because invitations to Thais to rent or buy equipment or computation processing power for cryptocurrency mining are being publicised via several media channels with promise of high returns.
The SEC said such investments would risk losing money because of fluctuations in cryptocurrency prices, high competition, degrading of equipment over time, and high power bills.
The watchdog also warned Thai investors that their personal information and digital assets could be stolen by hackers.
Worse still, scammers may use the business as front for their scams and misappropriate investors’ money without really investing in cryptocurrency mining.
The SEC said crypto-mining was not one of the businesses it monitored under provisions of the emergency decree on Digital Assets Business Operation, BE 2561 (2018).
The watchdog also noted that if the operators of crypto-mining businesses also sell digital coins or are engaged in the crypto-exchange business, they must first get approval from the SEC as required by the decree.
The SEC is now consulting with other concerned government agencies on how to supervise the digital assets business and provide better protection to Thai investors.
The agency also urged Thai investors to check the list of authorised digital assets exchange businesses on its website or use SEC Check First app to check the companies’ names.
Those who have questions about crypto businesses can call SEC Hotline at 1207 and press 2.

MQDC Tasks’ DGTO Prosperous’ with Global Investments
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 07, 2022
Enterprises seeking future business opportunities must not limit their scope to only one business or the domestic market. Instead, they should explore all investment options, both locally and overseas to create new revenue sources and diversify risks.
Modern businesses must also focus on the aspects of society, community, environment, technology and innovation, as these are crucial factors that help strengthen the business foundation.
The principle aligns with the missions and goals of DTGO Prosperous (DTP), an investment arm of Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (MQDC), one of Thailand’s top property development firms.
MQDC is a property arm of DTGO Corporation Ltd., focusing on residential and mixed-use properties and theme projects development, with the well-known flagship project “The Forestias” located on Bang Na-Trat (Debaratna) Road in Samut Prakan province.
DTP serves the group as its global investment company that invests in high-potential properties worldwide to generate regular income for the group. DTP also looks for investment in various innovation businesses to strengthen its parent portfolio under MQDC’s philosophy of “Well-Being For All”, which emphasises securing sustainability via innovation.
DTP recently unveiled its latest investment plan targeting four branches of business: global investment, asset management, fund management, and VC & innovative investment to further strengthen the DTGO ecosystem.
Hansa Susayan, Chairman of the Board of DTGO Prosperous Ltd, said that DTP aims to be a global investment company that focuses on social and environmental care while conducting business in a sustainable way. The mission is guided by MQDC’s philosophy and DTGO’s concept of “Adding Value in Everything We Do”, for the sake of the public.
Hansa said all of the company’s investments are implemented under the principle of ESG (environmental, social, and corporate governance). “We emphasise that our business operations must have low emissions, create positive outcomes for society, promote community participation, and be fully transparent under the corporate governance principle,” he said. “Most importantly, all operations must comply with the company’s sustainability goals.”
Thiti Thongbenjamas, DTP’s president, added that the company’s investments would focus on brownfield projects and high-potential assets to secure future opportunities in the four main business groups:
1. Global investment – DTP is eyeing investment in Thailand and overseas markets, including the United States, Europe, Japan, UAE, China, India, Vietnam, Singapore, Australia and South Africa. Just two months before the Covid-19 outbreak, the company had invested in several hotels in the UK under the Hilton, IHG and Marriott groups with a combined capacity of some thousands of rooms.
“The global hotel industry was at its peak when we bought these hotels. Over the years, their values have increased to more than the price we had bought,” said Thiti. “Furthermore, we also plan to expand our investments to related businesses such as office buildings, dormitories, apartments, and healthcare technology.”
2. Asset management – After acquiring the assets, DTP has improved the management and assets facilities to accelerate the hotels’ value. Thiti said the company had retained over 1,200 employees in the UK with no salary cuts during the lockdown, which made the hotels ready to operate as soon as the restrictions were lifted instead of facing labour shortages like other establishments.
Thiti added that DTP also applied heat-to-power conversion technology to minimise environmental impact and locked in energy rates to cut electricity bills. The company also plans to install solar panels on hotels’ rooftops to help with electricity generation.
“The company will continue to adjust the investment portfolio of hotels assets in the UK according to the changing lifestyle of the British people, who are now preferring to stay at hotels in big cities,” he said.
In the social responsibility aspect, DTP also plans to provide support to communities surrounding its hotels in Manchester as a pilot project before expanding to nearby cities. In Thailand during the pandemic, The Forestias project and its partners provided aid to nearby communities by establishing the “Sanam Saeng Haeng Jai” field hospital in Samut Prakan to help treat infected patients. DTP also channelled 2 per cent of its highest earnings for the initiation and operation of various charity projects, including the Buddharaksa Foundation, which supports the education of underprivileged children in remote areas.
3. Fund Management – DTP recently established DTPHREIT, a real estate investment trust (REIT) valued at 4.1 billion baht in September. DTPHREIT invested in MQDC’s hotels and service apartments in high-potential areas, such as the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok hotel, Magnolias Ratchadamri Boulevard service apartment, and U Khao Yai hotel. DTPHREIT is a buy-back type REIT in which the original owners commit to buying back their properties when the investment period is over.
4. VC & innovative investment – To ensure growth opportunities in the changing world that is not limited to only the property field, DTP channels its investment to venture capital and innovation with scalable business models. Examples of these investments are REDDS Technology Fund and chatbot technology.
Thiti said DTP’s investment strategy emphasises three aspects: Business synergy – the projects that add value and expand under the DTGO group; Monetisation – Can generate income to support continued re-investment; and Risk diversification in all types of risks – industrial, location, and financial.
“By avoiding investing in similar fields to generate the highest turnover possible, this strategy helps minimise investment-related risks, especially when an economic crisis emerges,” he said. “DTP aims to be an asset-light company that buys an asset, expands, develops and then sells it while still managing the asset via REIT or private property developers. This strategy enables us to raise funds and secure new partners for new projects, ensuring continued investments in various businesses.”
“These partners help DGTO Prosperous become a global investment company that focuses on social and environmental care in the communities we invest in to ensure sustainable growth of all parties,” said Thiti.
The Nation and VGI team up to bring “APEC Updates” to BTS screens
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 09, 2022
The Nation, a leading English-language media, and VGI Public Company Limited, the leader of Offline-To-Online Solutions media, has joined forces to produce news updates in English to support the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC 2022 Thailand), hosted in Bangkok.
The news service will start on Wednesday 9 via screens on BTS Skytrain. It is considered another crucial step for The Nation and VGI to provide modern news services to meet the needs of city life and to benefit passengers travelling by BTS.
APEC 2022 Thailand has been promoted to educate the public throughout the year 2022. The summit will take place from November 18-19.
Thailand previously hosted Apec in 1992 and 2003. This year the Thai government and related agencies want the public to know the background of the important event and the importance of APEC as being involved in various aspects to influence people’s lives?
The Nation is a major English language media of Thailand, has served to provide information about Thailand to the world community for over five decades.
The media outlet has been well recognized for its quality, the variety of news coverage, and impartiality. The Nation has realized the importance of APEC Summit and believed in the opportunity with VGI in expanding media and news services in English language to multiple channels, said Adisak Limparungpatanakit, consultant of Nation Group (Thailand) Public Company Limited
“This cooperation will help BTS passengers to receive news about the APEC meeting in English language, especially those who mainly speak English and passengers who are interested in the latest news. They will benefit greatly from “APEC Updates“, said Adisak.
VGI, as the country’s leading advertising platform on BTS Skytrain, has a mission to build a sustainable business with concerns about all stakeholders as well as society and related parties.
We recognize the importance of access to information for the public sector. The fact that Thailand hosts the APEC 2022 meeting this time is an important agenda that people should be informed of. The company therefore directly supports the media space for professional media with expertise in this field, such as The Nation, to let the city people receive updated information from the important national agenda this time, said Nelson Leung, CEO of VGI Plc.
“English is another important language of communication for Thai people. Providing a channel for BTS passengers to learn and use English in daily life through various media of VGI with information that is of interest is another channel that helps consumers to learn, and it benefits the society.
This collaboration with The Nation is met with our goal to help push the use of English into their daily lives while providing people with relevant news and information,” added Nelson.
Thailand’s Food Passion looks ‘beyond’ for big profits in restaurants
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022
Nongluck Ajanapanya
Food Passion, a leading Thai restaurant chain operator, has come up with a brand-new “Go Beyond” strategy to generate revenues upward of 5 billion baht by 2025.
The company oversees Bar-B-Q Plaza, Korean restaurant Red Sun, Chama, which offers healthier options, and fast-food Gon Express outlets.
Chataya Supanpong, Food Passion’s chief engagement officer, told the press on Tuesday that the new strategy will focus on personnel, profit and the planet.
The announcement comes at a time when business is almost back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic and the firm has made more than 2.7 billion baht in the first nine months of this year.
However, Chataya said that owing to consumer behavioural changes and food industry trends, Food Passion needs to upgrade its operations to provide frictionless service and personal insights.
“We need to go above and beyond our customers’ expectations by offering fine-dining restaurants, hygienic food, digital experiences and eco-friendly hangouts,” she said.
In its three-point plan, she said, the company has established its own learning and training centre to upgrade its personnel’s skills and education credentials.
As for profit, Food Passion plans to strengthen its three brands with digital options like cashless payment, mobile phone ordering and expand its business to neighbouring countries in the next three years.
“We currently have Bar-B-Q Plaza franchisees in Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia. Next year, we plan to enter Laos, and in 2024 four more branches will be launched in Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines,” Chataya said.
As for the planet, she said, the company has redesigned its operations to cut down on food waste. Food Passion is also partnering with a start-up to reduce 30% of its emissions by 2030 and go net zero by 2050.
Chataya added that Food Passion has set its target at 3.5 billion baht for this year and expects it to grow to 3.8 billion baht next year.
She said expanding the fast-food outlets, introducing cashless payment options, opening 40 new Bar-B-Q Plaza outlets and 30 more branches of other brands will all contribute to the growth in Thailand.
“Eating options now extend beyond dine-in restaurants and department store outlets,” she said.
The company has also aligned itself with the new eating-at-home lifestyle by releasing the GON barbeque sauce, which has already generated 11.2 million baht.
Food Passion is also engaging customers via its official LINE account and other online marketing channels to provide personalised promotions.
“The pandemic has taught us many lessons, including opening new doors for Food Passion to do business from all dimensions,” she said.
Chataya concluded that by 2025, Food Passion will have more than 270 outlets in Thailand and be able to generate up to 4.5 billion baht in revenue. The company will also operate 47 sites in seven countries, generating 800 million baht in revenue and employing over 2,500 people.
True, DTAC customers accuse consumer group of bias against the merger
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022
A group of customers of True Corporation and Total Access Communication (DTAC)’s mobile phone networks on Tuesday accused the Thailand Consumers Council (TCC) of being biased against the merger deal of the two operators.
The group went to the council’s head office and submitted an open letter demanding that the non-governmental organisation be unbiased about the deal instead of “acting in favour” of the other mobile phone operator. The group stopped short of mentioning Advanced Info Service (AIS), Thailand’s largest mobile phone operator in terms of subscriber base.
The group was led by Kongchat Kaewsukkho, a representative of DTAC mobile phone users, and Jirawat Pirasakphakdee, a representative of TrueMove H mobile phone users.
The two representatives said they were acting on behalf of a “group of True and DTAC mobile phone network users”.
After a long delay, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission voted on October 20 to give the green light for True and DTAC, the second and largest operators, to go ahead with their proposed merger with stringent conditions.
The NBTC voted that it had no power to stop the merger but could only issue regulations to protect customers.
But the TCC filed a lawsuit against the deal in the Central Administrative Court, which led to a suspension of the merger pending a ruling by the court.
Kongchat said his group made the move after it suspected “unrighteous” conduct by the TCC and lack of neutrality, after the consumer council launched a campaign on websites to gather signatures of people opposing the merger deal.
Kongchat said the open letter demanded that the TCC take into account the wishes of True and DTAC users who wanted the merger to be done as soon as possible.
“The TCC should listen to the opinions of real customers from all sides,” Kongchat said.
“The TCC should maintain neutrality and should provide comprehensive information and should act to protect all groups of consumers fairly.”
Kongchat said the TCC has never informed the public the benefits for customers from the DTAC-True merger.
For example, he said, DTAC clients would get to use facilities of True network after the merger, such as the True 5G network, which covers the country, and True Online’s comprehensive fibre networks as well as True Visions subscription TV network and online content of True ID TV network.
Kongchat added that DTAC users would also benefit from the numerous True service centres and several other affiliated services, such as True Health and True Money.
“A clear benefit is that our network’s signal will improve because after the merger, there will be more signal cells and the mobile signal will become faster and stronger and cover more areas,” Kongchat said.
“True and DTAC users will get to use better phone services and better Internet connection.”
Kongchat added his group believed the merger would intensify the competition between the large operators, and both True and DTAC would not stop offering privileges as they would have to try and maintain subscribers and win new ones.
“There is no reason for the merged firm to raise service prices because it would prompt customers to switch to the other network,” Kongchat argued.
He said his group also believed that the merged firm would have the capability to invest more to expand the network and develop technologies for coping with the growth of digital businesses.
“We customers see a lot of benefits for us and we clearly see that this merger will let True and DTAC clients receive only benefits without any disadvantage,” Kongchat said.
He added that the group also believed in the capability of the NBTC to control service prices to protect the customers in the future.
