Demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Thailand continues to rise this year.

Reservations for popular BEV brands are driving forecasts of strong growth in the EV market in 2023, with consumer confidence supporting investment in Thailand-based production of EVs, batteries and electric charging stations.

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have become a hot topic of conversation among Thais after more than 4,000 units of two models of Tesla were booked on the first day of the Telsa website accepting orders last month

Before the official arrival of Tesla to do its own marketing, the BEVs are already gaining popularity in Thailand

It is predicted that overall BEV sales in Thailand last year exceeded 12,500 units, a 212.5% increase over 2021

Total BEV sales this year are estimated at 24,000 units, a 92.0% increase over last year

Driving range
The International Energy Agency (IEA) states that a standard BEV had an average driving range of 349 kms per charge in 2022, an increase of 44% compared to 243 kms in 2017

Charging stations
Charging devices have been developed with fast charge technology, allowing a direct current fast charge to the level of 80% of battery in less than an hour

The Energy Policy and Planning Office of the Energy Ministry reports that there are 944 charging stations nationwide

The Electric Vehicle Association Of Thailand (EVAT) states that as of September 2022, there are 2,572 charger plugs in the country, a 13% increase year on year

EVAT says 46% of charger plugs are DC type (a 53% increase from last year) and 54% are AC type (an 8% decrease)

By 2025, the number of fast-charge plugs is estimated to rise to 4,400 plugs and to 12,000 plugs by 2030

Wallbox charging devices at home have become an alternative for BEV users

BEV motorists may get wallboxes from:

  • BEV manufacturers provide a free wallbox as a promotion plus free or discounted installation fee
  • Property developers provide a wallbox in their new projects
  • BEV users buy and install their own wallbox with cost ranging from 35,000 to 85,000 baht

Those without a wallbox can use an AC charger provided with their BEV, but the recharging takes up to 24 hours

Electric vehicles manufacturer Tesla on Monday hinted at arriving in the Thai EV market in December.

On Monday, Tesla opened a Line Official account ‘@TeslaTH’. It also posted a picture with the message “Hello Thailand” and “December 2022”.

At press time, there was no further information but automotive experts expected the cars would be delivered at the beginning of 2023 if the reservation opens in December.

Tesla registered as a company in Thailand on April 25 with initial capital of 3 million baht but it was later increased to 253 million baht.

According to the Business Development Department’s website, the company’s board had three members — David Jon Feinstein, Vaibhav Taneja, and Yaron Klein — who were executives at the US headquarters.

The company has registered to sell passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, and similar small cars. It aims to sell EVs and power systems including its equipment.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2022

Horizon Plus, a joint venture between PTT and Foxconn, will deliver the first batch of electric vehicles from its Chonburi plant in 2024, according to its chairman.

Buranin Rattanasombat said Horizon Plus is investing around 37 billion baht (US$1 billion) in its EV plant at Rojana Nongyai Industrial Park, where he broke ground for the project on Saturday.

Initial production capacity of 50,000 EVs per year will triple to 150,000 EVs by 2030 to support growing demand in Asea, said Buranin, who doubles as PTT’s chief new business and infrastructure officer. The project will create jobs for 2,000 high-skilled workers, he added.

Buranin said Horizon Plus will operate under a BOL (Build-Operate-Localise) policy to boost long-term competitiveness of the Thai EV industry and supply chain.

Thosaporn Sirisumphand, chairman of PTT and its EV arm Arun Plus, said Saturday’s stone-laying ceremony was an important step in the Foxconn-PTT partnership towards electrification of the regional auto industry.

“As the world moves toward low-carbon society, transition to the greener transportation alternatives such as EV will play a significant role in shaping future energy sustainability,” Thosaporn said. “This aligns with PTT’s commitment to create national energy security for the country.”

Auttapol Rerkpiboon, president and CEO of PTT, said: “The collaboration focuses not only on investment in EV production but also on research and development in Thailand.”

Kay Chiu, CEO of Horizon Plus, said full automation would boost production capacity and reduce costs, while clean energy will power operations to be Asean’s most modern and efficient manufacturer. Foxconn’s experience would ensure Horizon Plus’s success and help Thailand become Asean’s EV manufacturing hub, he said.

The plant will occupy a 500,000-square-metre plot in the heart of the Eastern Economic Corridor as part of Thailand’s vision to become the region’s EV manufacturing base.

Other big EV manufacturers setting up plants and battery factories include China’s BYD, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, MG, Great Wall Motors, and Volt. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Energy Absolute (EA) has launched the region’s largest lithium battery factory in Chachoengsao.

Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Thailand rose 223 per cent in the first nine months of 2022 from the same period last year, according to the Energy Ministry.

Thailand to double clean energy production for EVs: Supattanapong

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2022

Thailand will need to boost production of renewable energy by 10 gigawatts to meet demand from electric vehicles (EVs), Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said on Thursday.

Thailand currently has installed renewable energy capacity of over 9GW, or about 14% of its total power mix, according to the ministry’s Department of Alternative Energy Development and Energy.

The country has set a target of one million EVs on the roads by 2025, and 15 million within 10 years as it strives to become a global EV hub.

Supattanapong announced the renewable energy goal as he launched Thailand’s collaboration with the United Nations Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) on Thursday.

He said the collaboration will help Thailand develop a green economy and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, adding the country has already invested 640 billion baht on sustainability, ranging from the community level to SMEs and large industrial projects, including promotion of EV manufacturing and usage.

The government recently issued more incentives including excise tax breaks in a bid to make Thailand a world EV leader, he added.

More than 15,000 EVs have been reserved in Thailand this year, helping boost domestic manufacturing. The government is pushing for EVs to make up 10% of total domestic car manufacturing quickly, Supattanapong said.

“Five EV manufacturing companies have decided to build factories in Thailand while European car brands including Mercedes-Benz and BMW will also invest.”

The boom in EV production and usage in Thailand must be supported by an increase in renewable energy, he added.

He said Thailand would hit its carbon neutrality goal faster thanks to technology, expertise and funding from PAGE.
