Bangkok, November 18, 2022 – Dow Thailand Group and the Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University have signed an academic MOU to elevate the university’s curriculum through knowledge sharing from Dow experts; upskilling the chemical engineering curriculum to meet Thai industrial demand and allow students to compete in the global industrial sector.

Dow is a leading global Materials Science company, developing and producing a broad range of differentiated, science-based products and solutions such as plastics, industrial chemicals, coatings, and silicones for its customers in high-growth market segments, such as packaging, mobility (especially EV cars), infrastructure, and consumer applications. Dow has operated in the field for over 125 years, with 104 manufacturing sites in 31 countries and distributors in 150 countries.

As experts in Materials Science, Dow is increasingly involved in curriculum development strategies for students that help upskill them to meet the needs of the market. This collaboration integrates expertise into the course content, along with providing research that supports efficient Thai manufacturing. Through this cooperation, Dow is not only giving an opportunity to students to learn directly from industry experts, but also supports scholarships and presents openings for students to work at Dow after they graduate.

The event featured an exciting six-bout main card, headlined by a thrilling ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title fight and the ONE Heavyweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship Final.

ONE Championship, in partnership with leading premium lifestyle and luxury performance brand TUMI, presented the prestigious ONE World Title and Grand Prix belts to the World Champions.

In the main event, Thai veteran Petchtanong Petchfergus put together one of the best performances of his career, upsetting divisional king Hiroki Akimoto via split decision to capture the ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Title.

Akimoto put on the pressure in the first stanza, pushing forward behind aggressive combinations while Petchtanong patiently waited for an opportunity to counter. The Thai warrior unleashed his left knee more frequently in the second round, tagging the right side of Akimoto’s body, which turned black and blue from the punishment.

The Japanese stalwart tried to battle back in the third frame, but he failed to make key adjustments, as he had difficulty dealing with the challenger’s expert timing. Petchtanong grew more confident as the bout went on, and he eventually cruised to a split-decision victory after 15 minutes of battle.

In the co-main event, ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing World Champion Roman Kryklia overcame a knockdown in the first stanza to stop longtime rival Iraj Azizpour and win the ONE Heavyweight Kickboxing World Grand Prix Championship. Azizpour dropped Kryklia with a right hand in the opening frame, but the Ukrainian tower of power dug deep and survived. In the second round, Kryklia stung the Iranian with a knee down the middle that had his rival dazed. Not long after beating the 10-count, Azizpour succumbed to unrelenting pressure, as the Ukrainian closed the show with a volley of straight punches. Kryklia took home a US$50,000 bonus for his victory.

Revolutionising Financial Reporting in the Digital Age

Revolutionising Financial Reporting in the Digital Age

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2022

Finance and Accounting team, if you ever happened to discuss what they have been suffering from their work so far, one of the most frequently mentioned issues will certainly include a painful report production process.

Repeatedly, month after month, to serve such standards and business and executive requirements, the FA people need to dedicate their time and motivation in preparing numerous spreadsheets and presentations with numbers, charts, and relevant footnotes and narratives. The process involves efforts of data gathering, manipulation, and spreadsheet gymnastics, which can consume days to weeks to produce the usable outcomes. Based on the survey of 600 global finance leaders conducted by Deloitte, it was found that companies surveyed spent 48% of their time creating and updating reports, whilst they spent only 18% of their time interacting and communicating with the business perspective (See Figure 1).

Figure 1: How finance teams spend their time

More than ever, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses currently require greater support from holistic reporting in decision-making process to strengthen themselves or at least survive the upcoming crisis. Though many companies have strived to reduce time in generating reports and enhance ability to get insights more quickly by standardising reports into those ones which are necessarily required, there is still a huge room for improvement in response to the dynamically changing business requirements. We can see that the trend is shifting from periodic reporting-monthly, quarterly, and annually to a more real-time-insights manner for off-cycle reporting. Further transformation entails the interaction between working people and reported information which will replace static data merely displayed in the system or printed on paper. Underlying these mentioned characteristics, the key driver for changes lies on emerging intelligent technologies which will not only remove laborious work but also improve the user experience.

Embracing digital tools could have been one among alternatives for FA people to reshape their work life by speeding up report production process. Little by little, some companies have started implementing such tools as point or end-to-end solutions, while many are still hesitating to transform themselves. Yet, it is quite surprising to learn that many organisations are still relying on traditional ways to compile data from sources and produce into reports despite the prevalent handful technologies, such as automation, advanced analytics, machine learning, presence nowadays. Perhaps one of the factors that delay the decision to do so is just basically that the management do not know how to push the start button. Here are some tips we would like to share:

Organise your data. Because your report quality will certainly depend on the quality of your data, somehow you will need to redesign the way to manage your finance and enterprise data prior to the adoption of those digital reporting tools. This could involve implementing data platforms that can develop gradually to support structured and unstructured data or cleansing your data to avoid ‘Garbage-in, Garbage-out’.

Gain buy-in from the C-Suite. We know that the first mover role here should belong to CFO since the issue was raised from FA side. Nonetheless, it is also crucial for the CFO to bring these ideas to the entire C – suite. If other leaders support technological innovation in finance, it can also help the business to further adopt the innovation and apply to other functional processes to make the most of their capabilities.

Focus on the user experience. Early in your journey, explore “what-if” questions with key users. Ask them how they might use information differently if their reports were more intuitive, more visual, and more proactive. Build in formal and informal mechanisms for generating feedback. These actions make sure you put technologies in the right place and right way.

Take small steps. Just try applying solutions to specific segments or functions first. You do not want to make a huge investment at a time to find it hurts the most when things are not going well as you have dreamt of. Look for high-impact use cases to build a base of advocates. For many firms, sales reports can be a good choice to start with. Make sure you pilot with a range of potential users who will become your champions. Then you can span the full range of usage among those who will eventually adopt the technology.

Reassure your people. Workforce disruption is inevitable for companies trying to adopt automation or digital tools. Since some more routine and laborious tasks may be obsolete when new technologies take place, make sure you have plan to build new talents and skills for your people to cope with the changes. Work with employees to make the most of their human skills, empowering them in new roles that rely on high-level analysis, relationship-building, and creativity.

Reimagine your people. Start thinking about your people in future conditions. What types of skillsets you will need? Be aware that, with the handful digital tools armed in your company, the time allocation of the finance workforce will shift toward analysis, prediction, and decision support. Thus, in collaboration with your HR team, make sure they understand this so that you will get the right persons at hand.

Finally, let us imagine how life would be much easier if there is a personal assistant helping you gathering data and composing the first draft of all reports, or the chatbots that can retrieve insights you need to know without diving in all sources of data by yourself. Now you can focus on the value-added activities.

In addition, diabetes is also leading cause of many other diseases such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and kidney disease, etc.

Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand together with Diabetes Association of Thailand, increase access to diabetes - Education to protect tomorrow

Mr. Enrico Cañal Bruland, Vice President and General Manager, Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand revealed – “One thing we should always be aware of is the Rule of Halves. Looking at the number of people living with diabetes, out of the 100, only half, meaning 50, have been diagnosed. Beyond the national registration, the number of patients with diabetes is likely more than double. Looking to those 50 people diagnosed with diabetes, only 25 have access the proper treatment, and only about 13 achieve the treatment goals. Meaning almost 90% of people living with diabetes are not well controlled. Without working together to change diabetes, we will experience significant more complications for people living with diabetes as well as healthcare expenses. The direct impact to the public and society requires us raising awareness of diabetes and its risk factors, which is one of the main objectives of this health campaign.”

Novo Nordisk Pharma Thailand emphasizes on driving change as well as raising awareness to prevent and adequately treat diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has set the topic Access to Diabetes Care for the 2021-2023 campaign and this year the focus is on – Education to protect tomorrow. Hence, we feel the need to raise awareness about exercise for people living with diabetes and the public. Healthy living including exercise provides benefits for people with diabetes including weight management, improving blood sugar levels, and lowering the risk of heart diseases.

“Supporting this event on World Diabetes Day is one of our key activities, especially this year, as we are starting to count our steps towards celebrating 100 years of innovation with Novo Nordisk. It represents our long journey in the fight against diabetes and improving lives for people with diabetes, starting with insulin almost 100 years ago. As the world leader in diabetes care, we will continue to focus on providing quality products, enhancing access to treatment for the people as well as innovating the ways to improve quality of life of patients.

People with diabetes notably benefit from regular physical activities. It’s important for them to get in some proper physical activities. At our booth, we have exercise games. Participants not only enjoy themselves without feeling any added pressure, but their interactions and relationship with people, caregivers, and family members are strengthened as a result” Mr. Enrico Cañal Bruland added.

GULF posts a slight decline in core profit YoY in Q3/2022 due to the sharp rise in natural gas prices

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2022

GULF reported the financial results for Q3/22 with a core profit of THB 2,167 million, a 6% decrease YoY due to the spike in natural gas prices.

Gulf Energy Development Plc. (GULF) reported the financial results for Q3/22 with total revenues of THB 24,275 million, representing an increase of 76% year-on-year (YoY). The growth was driven mostly by the revenue recognition of Gulf SRC’s (GSRC) units 2-3 with a total installed power generation capacity of 1,325 MW, which began commercial operation in Q4/21 and Q1/22, respectively. Another factor is the increased revenue from the Borkum Riffgrund 2 offshore wind power project (BKR2) in Germany as a result of the average electricity prices, which almost doubled from €184/MWh to €328/MWh. Additionally, GULF recorded higher revenue from the 19 gas-fired SPPs due to higher electricity selling prices in tandem with the rise in natural gas prices.

In Q3/22, gross profit from sales was THB 4,466 million, an increase of 55% YoY or THB 1,584 million. However, gross profit margin decreased to 20.6%, down from 24.6% in Q3/21 due to the rise in average natural gas costs by 116% YoY, from 268.61 THB/MMBTU in Q3/21 to 579.13 THB/MMBTU this quarter, while the average Ft rate increased by 0.6298 THB/kWh (from -0.1532 THB/kWh to 0.4766 THB/kWh). In addition, the SPPs under GMP Group, which include GBP, GNPM, and GNRV2 power plants, as well as an IPP under GJP Group, the GUT power plant, had a major maintenance shutdown (B Inspection) during Q3/22.

GULF recorded a core profit of THB 2,167 million in this quarter, a decrease of THB 126 million or 6% YoY, primarily due to the aforementioned spike in natural gas prices, along with the decrease in share of profit from INTUCH of THB 556 million (in Q3/21, GULF recognized dividend income from INTUCH of THB 1,667 million, while in Q3/22, the company changed its accounting method for INTUCH to share of profit, which was recorded at THB 1,111 million). In addition, PTT NGD posted a loss of THB 221 million in this quarter due to lower fuel oil prices and higher gas prices (PTT NGD’s revenue structure is linked to fuel oil prices while costs are linked to gas prices). Nevertheless, GSRC recorded higher profit from the commercial operation of units 2-3 and BKR2 had improved performance this quarter, which resulted in the overall profit to weaken just slightly.

Net profit attributable to the parent company, which takes into account the impact of the FX rate, was THB 1,087 million, a decrease of 32% YoY from THB 1,588 million in Q3/22 as a result of the Thai Baht depreciation against the US Dollar by 7.3%, from 35.46 THB/USD in Q2/22 to 38.07 THB/USD in Q3/22, while the Thai Baht depreciated by only 5.8% against the US Dollar in Q3/21 compared to Q2/21. Nonetheless, the recording of such transaction is an accounting transaction, which does not impact the cash flow and performance of the company.

As of September 30, 2022, GULF had a net interest-bearing debt to equity ratio of 1.96 times, a slight increase from 1.89 times at the end of June 2022. This was mainly due to the THB 35,000 million in debentures that GULF issued in August 2022 for business expansion and partial loan repayment.

Ms. Yupapin Wangviwat, Chief Financial Officer, GULF, stated, “This year’s performance is still in line with the target, despite the steep rise in natural gas prices. GULF received minimal impact as industrial customers account for only 13-14% of GULF Group’s overall electricity sales volume. Moreover, GULF invests in various types of businesses, both domestically and internationally, such as the renewable energy business overseas, including the BKR2 wind power project in Germany and solar farm projects in Vietnam, the gas-fired power generation business overseas, such as the Jackson Generation power project in the United States, as well as the investment in INTUCH Group. This is to diversify revenue streams, which results in stable earnings in the long term for GULF.”

In Q4/22, earnings will grow from GSRC unit 4 (662.5 MW), which began commercial operation on October 1, 2022, and the BKR2 wind power project, which will reach its peak season in the fourth quarter. GULF will also record a full-quarter share of profit from the 3 wind power projects under Gulf Gunkul Corporation. For 2023 results, earnings are anticipated to increase significantly from the commercial operation of the Gulf Pluak Daeng (GPD) project, which is an IPP power plant with a total installed power generation capacity of 2,650 MW, where two units, totaling 1,325 MW, are scheduled to commence commercial operation. GULF also expects to record profit from the 1,200-MW gas-fired Jackson Generation power project in the United States from Q1/23 onwards.

TCAP reports 17.5% boost in net profit

TCAP reports 17.5% boost in net profit

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2022

Thanachart Capital Pcl (TCAP) has released the operating results for the first nine months of 2022. Net profit based on the consolidated financial statements amounted to 5.142 billion baht, while net profit attributable to the company amounted to 4.134 billion baht, representing an increase of 17.51% when compared to the same period last year. TCAP attributed the results to continuously growing operating results from associated companies and subsidiaries.

Somjate Moosirilert, Chief Executive Officer of Thanachart Capital Public Company Limited (TCAP), said, “Based on the consolidated financial statements of the Company and its subsidiaries for the nine months of 2022, net profit amounted to 5,142 million baht, of which 4,134 million baht was net profit attributable to the Company, representing an increase of 17.51 % when compared to the same period last year. This was mainly due to the continuously growing operating results from the associated companies and the subsidiaries, in which the Company held shares.”

The performance of the associated companies, particularly TMBThanachart Bank (ttb), in which TCAP held shares was stronger. This was mainly due to continued economic recovery. As regards its subsidiaries, profit of Ratchthani Leasing (THANI) increased by 11.55 % compared to the nine months last year. This was attributable to healthy growth of hire purchase loans for trucks, effective cost control management, and efficient asset quality control.

In relation to Thanachart Insurance (TNI), the premiums received in the nine months increased by 24.92 %, which was in line with the established target.

As for Thanachart Plus (T-Plus), it registered continuous growth with outstanding loans of above 4,000 million baht and no non-performing loans. This was due to cautious and effective risk management.

On the other hand, Thanachart Securities (TNS) registered healthy growth in non-brokerage income, offsetting the falling brokerage income due to unfavourable market conditions.

In addition, on October 27, 2022, TCAP made additional investments in TNI and TNS.  As a result, TCAP’s equity stake in the two subsidiaries increased to 89.96 % from 50.96 %. This was mainly because TCAP considered that both subsidiaries were its key subsidiaries and they continuously delivered strong performance with their Return on Equity (ROE) being high.

“TCAP is confident that the additional investments will generate good results for TCAP’s shareholders in the future,” Somjate said.
