Monza’s Spanish soccer player Pablo Mari was stabbed on Thursday (October 27) along with five other people in a shopping mall in the town of Assago outside Milan, Italy’s Carabinieri police said.

A 46-year-old suspect has been detained but the motive for the attack in a supermarket was not clear.

Carabinieri police said one person had died, a 47-year-old Bolivian national who worked at the supermarket. Another employee was injured along with four customers, including Mari whose agent said his injuries were not serious.

Monza Chief Executive Adriano Galliani told Sky Italy: “Pablo Mari had a fairly deep wound on his back, which fortunately did not touch his vital organs such as the lungs or others. His life is not in danger, he should recover quickly,”.

The 29-year-old centre back is on loan at Serie A club Monza from Premier League club Arsenal, who said in a statement: “We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt.”

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said: “I just found out. I know (technical director) Edu has been in touch with his relatives. He’s in hospital but he seems to be okay.”

Arteta was speaking at a news conference after his team’s match away to PSV Eindhoven in the Europa League.

Galliani earlier said on Twitter: “Dear Pablo, we are all here close to you and your family, we love you, keep fighting as you know how to do, you are a warrior and you will get well soon.”

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag praised Cristano Ronaldo after the Portuguese forward scored against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Ronaldo was brought back into the United fold after being left out against Chelsea following an incident where he refused to come on as a substitute against Spurs.

On the night, Ronalo scored the third goal of the game to help the Red Devils to a 3-0 win.

“Yes. But you said, he (Cristiano Ronaldo) kept going and the team kept going to put them in the right position. He kept going to get his self in the right position. He didn’t give up. I think that is what his whole career. That’s why he is so good. And in the end, he get the reward for it.” Said  Erik ten Hag

“I don’t have a problem with that as long it’s functional. But also from him I demand more. More runs behind and more often in the box and more followers and more tempo dribbles especially, and more playing in the pocket. So we demand more dominance in this game. And now then there is a trick like that, it’s nice, as long as functional. If you’re not losing the ball as you’re attracting plays, then it’s okay. But it’s a trick. Because of a trick. Yeah. Then I will correct them.”

Diogo Dalot broke the deadlock with a header from a curled Christian Eriksen corner just before half-time.

Soon after the break, Marcus Rashford added a second with a headed effort from inside the box.

In the 81st minute, Ronaldo scored to rapturous applause to make it 3-0 and seal victory.

United secured qualification from Group E with the win.

Next week they will have to beat Real Sociedad by two goals or more to avoid a play-off against a team dropping from the Champions League.

Saphan Kwai may not be one of Bangkok’s hip hangout areas, but many travellers do stop over here. Unlike its upmarket Ari neigbourhood, Saphan Kwai is known as a transit junction for both local and international travellers, a kind of gateway to the North and Northeastern regions of Thailand.

The lack of alluring attractions around the area has meant that travellers would seek out a place where they could rest, look for a meal at a reasonable price, before moving on to their final destination.

But even a stopover, at the right place, can be memorable. One of Saphan Khwai’s hidden gems is “Khaomali”, a Thai restaurant situated right next to Big C. It’s decor is not going to win awards. It follows a simple, minimalist pattern, is painted in white and green, but distinguishes itself by the fare it serves — fusion, but with good quality and authentic Thai taste.

Obscure Saphan Kwai restaurant serves authentic Thai food with a royal flavourKhao Kluk Kapi, or rice mixed with Thai fermented shrimp paste, served with assorted condiments, is one standout item on the menu. The history of the dish apparently dates back a 100 years to the reign of King Rama V while he was abroad on an official visit. The restaurant explains, “At Khaomali, this dish is served with unusual ingredients as part of the condiments.” Ham, surely, is not a Thai ingredient but the restaurant explains: “While on his visit, the King craved for food cooked by his grandmother and this dish came to his mind. The next day, he started to cook this dish with the Thai ingredients that he had taken along with him on the trip, while adding local ingredients found in the foreign land. After the meal, the king said, ‘So easy to devour, it helps remove the feeling of having heavy hard bread and meat going down my throat’.”

The restaurant serves homely Thai food that can be enjoyed at a gathering of friends, like “mee krob” (crispy rice noodle coated in tamarind sauce), vermicelli and crab meat, topped with the restaurant’s signature sauce, beef shanks green curry.

If you are in a hurry, “A-Harn Jan duan”, or a quick meal plate, is also available, such as Thailand’s favourite quick meals like:
● Khao Pad Krapao Kai Dao (rice topped with basil sauce and fried egg). You can pick your favourite meat

● Khao pad Namprik Long Ruea (rice mixed with chilli paste and assorted condiments)

● Khao Kai Kua Prik Kluea (rice with fried chicken in salt and chilli)

But if you are looking for something to snack on, The Nation would like to recommend the star of their menu: Khao Tang Na Tang (crispy rice crackers with coconut pork dip). Somtam and spicy Thai vermicelli salad are also a must try! For a cool, soothing dessert, coconut ice-cream is highly recommended!

Thailand unveils digital payment plan in 3-year push for cashless economy

Thailand unveils digital payment plan in 3-year push for cashless economy

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2022

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) has unveiled its three-year plan for a payment system that will underpin the country’s digital economy.

The plan is Thailand’s response to the challenges of digital disruption, said Ronadol Numnonda, BOT deputy governor of financial institutions stability, on Thursday.

He added that digital finance is rising in Thailand and across the world, as seen in the popularity of digital payments and currencies.

“The number of digital payments globally increased five times last year,” Ronadol remarked.

He outlined three aspects of Thailand’s three-year payment system plan:

Openness: connecting data to create an ecosystem conducive to competition using new technologies and innovations.

Inclusivity: developing the system to cover all groups of users, as well as creating digital literacy among them.

Resiliency: ensuring that all businesses can operate smoothly and combat risks by developing new tools and cybersecurity cooperation.

“This will enable all groups of people to access digital payment, improve their quality of life and drive Thailand towards the digital economy,” he said.

Bangkok Bank executive vice president Sudsanguan Chusacultanachai said digital payment was essential to drive Thailand towards a digitised economy, adding that traditional transactions add costs for financial institutions.

“If we can reduce the use of traditional financial transactions, we can use the leftover cash to develop other services,” she said.

She said that though most people are now familiar with smartphones, old behaviours pose a challenge to Thailand’s digital development. However, a digital economy would relieve burdens for businesses and reduce errors in their operations.

“Digital payment will be key to streamlining processes, enabling Thailand to move towards a digital economy,” she added.

Elon Musk began his regime at Twitter by firing top executives for allegedly misleading him, but provided little information on how he will achieve his outlined ambitions, a Reuters report said.

The CEO of electric automaker Tesla has said he wants to “defeat” spam bots on Twitter, make algorithms that determine how content is presented publicly available and prevent the platform from becoming an echo chamber for hate and division.

Without providing details on how he will achieve these ambitions and who will run the company, Musk has only said he plans to cut jobs, leaving Twitter’s approximately 7,500 employees fretting about their future.

He has said he did not buy Twitter to make more money but “to try to help humanity, whom I love”.

“Musk terminated Twitter chief executive Parag Agrawal, chief financial officer Ned Segal and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde,” Reuters said, citing people familiar with the matter.

“He had accused them of misleading him and Twitter investors over the number of fake accounts on the social media platform.”

Twitter, Musk and the executives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The US$44-billion acquisition is the culmination of a remarkable saga, full of twists and turns, that sowed doubt over whether Musk would complete the deal.

It began on April 4, when Musk disclosed a 9.2 per cent stake in the company, making him its largest shareholder. He then agreed to join Twitter’s board, only to baulk at the last minute and offer to buy the company instead for $54.20 per share.

Over the course of just one weekend in April, Musk and Twitter reached a deal at the price he suggested.

However, Musk had second thoughts in the following weeks, complaining publicly that he believed Twitter’s spam accounts were significantly higher than the company’s estimate of less than 5 per cent of its monetizable daily active users.

The acrimony resulted in Musk giving notice to Twitter on July 8 that he was terminating their deal on grounds that Twitter misled him about the bots and did not cooperate with him.

Four days later, Twitter sued Musk in Delaware, where the company is incorporated, to force him to complete the deal. Twitter accused Musk of buyer’s remorse, arguing he wanted to get out of the deal because he thought he overpaid.

However, Musk on October 4 performed another U-turn and offered to complete the deal as promised. The Delaware judge gave him an October 28 deadline to close the transaction and avoid trial.

Amid interest from foreign investors, KBank ‘to invite bids’ for its asset management business

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 2022

Kasikornbank (KBank) will invite bids for its asset management business after seeing interest among foreign investors, according to a Bloomberg report on Thursday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

Among investors who have reportedly expressed interest in bidding for Kasikorn Asset Management (KAsset) are French asset management company Amundi, American investment company TPG and Luxembourg-based private equity and investment advisory firm CVC Capital Partners.

It is expected that the bidding agreement would cover acquisition, share purchase or even business partnership.

KBank had earlier expressed its intention to sell its asset management business and that the bank was seeking business opportunities to benefit customers and shareholders.

“If the transaction [sale of KAsset] is made, the bank will reveal information in line with the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s regulations,” the bank said.

Bloomberg had reported that Thailand’s large financial institutions, SCBX and KBank, also have planned to sell their asset management business.

UN watchdog to inspect 2 Ukraine sites over Russia’s ‘dirty bomb’ claims

UN watchdog to inspect 2 Ukraine sites over Russia’s ‘dirty bomb’ claims

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2022

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog confirmed on Thursday (October 27) that it plans to send inspectors soon to two sites at Kyiv’s request in response to Russian claims that Ukraine could deploy a so-called dirty bomb. Ukraine denies the claim.

“Inspections are on the way,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told reporters after a closed-door meeting with members of the UN Security Council.

“In this case, there has been a very clear indication from a very high official of the Russian Federation about work that, clandestine work, in fact, to divert nuclear material,” he added.

The move to send inspectors follows statement by a senior Russian officer that institutes in Ukraine linked to the nuclear industry were engaged in preparations to produce such a bomb. “Dirty bombs” are laced with nuclear material.

Russia’s state news agency RIA had earlier identified what it said were the two sites involved in the operation – the Eastern Mineral Enrichment Plant in the central Dnipropetrovsk region and the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv.

Grossi said the inspectors would reach a conclusion on the accusations within “days” of undertaking their work.

Earlier on Thursday, the United States and allies slammed Russia for wasting the UN Security Council’s time and spreading conspiracy theories by raising its accusation that the United States has a “military biological program” in Ukraine.

Russia has raised at least twice at the Security Council the issue of a biological weapons program in Ukraine. The United States and Ukraine have said they do not have biological weapons programs.

Russia is now pushing for a formal inquiry. It has drafted a Security Council resolution to set up a commission, comprising all 15 council members, to investigate its claims. Such a move is possible – but has never been invoked – under the Biological Weapons Convention, which took effect in 1975.

Russia’s ambassador to the UN said all of its accusations regarding possible biological or radiological weapons in Ukraine should be taken seriously.

“I don’t think that what we had today, this is a waste of time, raising an issue of potential and radiological contamination due to the use of, say, a dirty bomb is not a waste of time. This is a serious issue which should be dealt with seriously,” Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya told reporters.

UN disarmament officials have long said they are not aware of any biological weapons programs in Ukraine
