3 Years After S Korea ‘No Japan’ Boycott, Sentiment Toward Japan Starts To Thaw

The Frozen Relationship Between South Korea And Japan Seems To Be Thawing, At Least Among The General Public, According To A Report Jointly Released By Korean Think Tank East Asia Institute And Japan-Based Genron NPO.

Korean people’s positive sentiment toward Japan bounced back to levels last seen in 2019 before Japan imposed trade sanctions on Korea over historical conflicts and S. Koreans responded with the “No Japan” boycott of anything Japanese.

According to a report jointly released by Korean think tank East Asia Institute and Japan-based Genron NPO on Sept. 1, 30.6 per cent of Koreans said they feel favourable toward Japan, the second-highest since the survey was first carried out in 2013. The highest was 31.7 per cent recorded in 2019.

The 2022 figure also marked a big jump from 20.5 per cent and 12.3 per cent tallied in 2021 and 2020, respectively.

The survey was conducted with 2,028 people — 1,028 Korean nationals and 1,000 Japanese.

The tension between the two countries intensified after Japan placed export curbs on key high-tech materials crucial for Korean tech firms in July 2019. It was widely viewed here as an act of retaliation against the South Korean top court, which ordered the seizure of local assets of a Japanese company after it refused to compensate several victims of forced labour during World War II. Korea was a colony of Japan at that time.

In response, Korean people voluntarily boycotted Japanese brands such as clothing retailer Uniqlo and Tokyo-based brewery Asahi.

Almost three years after the flare-up of tensions, a growing number of people from both countries hope for an improvement in ties, the latest survey also showed.

Those who said the two nations should mend ties accounted for 81.1 per cent of Korean nationals, up 10 percentage points from a year earlier. Some 53.4 per cent of Japanese respondents wanted a better relationship, up 6.7 percentage points.

Japanese who harbour positive views of Korea also increased to 30.4 per cent this year from 25.4 per cent last year.

The report referred to diplomatic conflicts that have continued between the neighbours over the past decade, including a suspension of bilateral talks on Korean women who were forced into wartime sexual slavery for the Japanese military and Korea’s decision to terminate a military intelligence-sharing agreement with Japan.

Japan still has in place trade restrictions targeting Korea, and the Korean court has not changed its stance on the force labour compensation issue.

“However, public opinion in both countries showed a clear positive pattern this year,” the report said.

Reflecting warming sentiment, Uniqlo, which closed over 50 stores here in the aftermath of the boycott campaign, swung back into the black last year. Asahi also resumed advertisements on social media and YouTube.

Korea has warmer sentiment toward Japan than it does toward China, a separate survey showed.

In a survey of Koreans by Hankook Research on Aug. 21, China was the second least popular country among five major countries: the United States, Japan, North Korea and Russia.

Fireworks Lit Up Moscow’s Famous Red Square On Saturday As Russian President Vladimir Putin Addressed A Gala Concert To Mark The Russian Capital’s 875th Anniversary.

He told crowds Moscow was “one of the most beautiful and comfortable megacities in the world”.

Putin also said a “great job” was being done to “revive” the capitals of the breakaway self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics in eastern Ukraine, which are recognised as independent states by only a tiny number of countries including Russia.

“They are repairing damaged residential buildings, roads, schools, doing everything to prepare Donetsk and Luhansk for winter,” Putin said.

As part of the festivities, the Russian president also visited a new International Sambo Centre and opened Europe’s largest Ferris wheel.

Putin was taking part in the celebrations amid setbacks in Ukraine where Russian troops were being pulled out of the eastern Ukrainian towns of Balakliia and Izium, located at crucial points on supply routes for its campaign in the Donbas region.

The Russian defence ministry said on Saturday it had decided to regroup the Russian troops “in order to achieve the stated goals of the special military operation to liberate the Donbas (a region in eastern Ukraine).”

Queen Elizabeth II, Who Died On Thursday At Age 96, Was 25 Years Old When She Learned She Had Become Queen In February 1952 While She Was On An Official Trip To Kenya.

That month, Princess Elizabeth and her husband, the late Prince Philip, had begun a Commonwealth tour with a visit to the east African county, after being seen off by her parents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and her sister Princess Margaret at London’s Heathrow airport on January 31.

When the news broke the princess was staying at the Treetop Lodge located at the Aberdare National Park in Kenya.

The lodge although closed due to COVID still holds her passing to heart because her stay put the establishment on the world map.

Today they have a suite named after the Queen and Amos Ndegwa a guide at the lodge whose grandfather built the original structure was in mourning.

“It is very sad when we heard the news that she has passed on because she left a big legacy in this hotel because most of the tourists who normally visit here in Africa don’t complete their journey without coming to Treetops and seeing where Queen has seated and normally always want to see the Queen’s room because it still exists, and it’s like a monument,” said Ndegwa.

Ndegwa added the lodge built in 1932 was the only lodge forty feet from the ground. Guests could watch animals comfortably from the confront of their rooms that’s why Queen Elizabeth was attracted to the place.

SUN, SEPTEMBER 11, 2022

Prince Harry And His Wife Meghan Joined William And His Wife Kate On A Walkabout Among Crowds Near Windsor Castle On Saturday Following The Death Of Their Grandmother Queen Elizabeth, Raising The Prospect Of A Rapprochement Between The Brothers.

The two sons of King Charles, once so close after the death of their mother Diana in a Paris car crash in 1997, have fallen out in recent years after Harry and Meghan gave up their royal titles to move to the United States.

The couple had been in Britain on a brief visit when the queen, Britain’s longest reigning monarch, died on Thursday.

Like other senior members of the royal family, Harry rushed to be by the queen’s side as she deteriorated at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. A spokesperson for the heir to the throne said William had extended an invitation for the Windsor walk.

A royal source described it as an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family. They emerged from the same car, all wearing black.

The two couples did not interact much during the 40-minute walkabout near one of the queen’s favourite English homes, as they stopped to read messages left among the flowers and shake hands and chat with the thousands of people lining the Long Walk.

Royal observers had been looking for signs of a detente amid the pomp and ceremony of a period of national mourning and Elizabeth’s state funeral.

Also, on Saturday, senior members of the Royal Family – including the queen’s children, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – greeted well-wishers and read notes on floral tributes laid at Balmoral Castle in honour of the queen.

The royals emerged outside the Queen’s Scottish home, where she died on Thursday (September 8) and her body still remains and was met by throngs of mourners who had gathered to pay their respects.

The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, royal officials said on Saturday, as her son Charles was officially proclaimed Britain’s new king in a colourful ceremony laden with pageantry and dating back centuries.

Charles, 73, immediately succeeded his mother but an Accession Council met at St James’s – the most senior royal palace in the United Kingdom built for Henry VIII in the 1530s – to proclaim him as king on Saturday.

The council – formed of Privy Counsellors whose centuries-old role has been to advise the monarch – included his son and heir William, wife Camilla and Britain’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, who signed the proclamation of his accession.

King Charles III hosted his first audience with senior politicians and members of the clergy, including the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

The king appeared in good spirits, often sharing a joke with those he was seen chatting with.

Prime Minister Liz Truss, herself just days into her role as head of government, was seen introducing the new king to MPs.

Canada also proclaimed Charles its king on Saturday in a formal ceremony at the official residence in Ottawa of the governor general, the monarch’s representative in Canada who performs the duties of the head of state on behalf of the crown.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who earlier arrived with his youngest son Hadrien, and Governor General Mary Simon signed an order in council proclaiming the new sovereign after a Cabinet meeting. The table used for the event is the same table Queen Elizabeth used during her first official visit to Canada in October 1957.

Britain’s New King Charles Issued A Personal Statement During A Historic Ceremony On Saturday At Which He Was Formally Proclaimed The New Monarch

Here is a text of his personal declaration:

“My Lords, Ladies, and Gentlemen.

“It is my most sorrowful duty to announce to you the death of my beloved Mother, The Queen.

“I know how deeply you, the entire Nation – and I think I may say the whole world – sympathise with me in the irreparable loss we have all suffered. It is the greatest consolation to me to know of the sympathy expressed by so many to my Sister and Brothers and that such overwhelming affection and support should be extended to our whole family in our loss.

“To all of us as a family, as to this kingdom and the wider family of nations of which it is a part, my Mother gave an example of lifelong love and of selfless service.

“My Mother’s reign was unequalled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life.

“I am deeply aware of this great inheritance and of the duties and heavy responsibilities of Sovereignty which have now passed to me.

“In taking up these responsibilities, I shall strive to follow the inspiring example I have been set in upholding constitutional government and to seek the peace, harmony and prosperity of the peoples of these Islands and of the Commonwealth Realms and Territories throughout the world.

“In this purpose, I know that I shall be upheld by the affection and loyalty of the peoples whose Sovereign I have been called upon to be, and that in the discharge of these duties I will be guided by the counsel of their elected parliaments. In all this, I am profoundly encouraged by the constant support of my beloved wife.

“I take this opportunity to confirm my willingness and intention to continue the tradition of surrendering the hereditary revenues, including the Crown Estate, to My Government for the benefit of all, in return for the Sovereign Grant, which supports My official duties as Head of State and Head of Nation.

And in carrying out the heavy task that has been laid upon me, and to which I now dedicate what remains to me of my life, I pray for the guidance and help of Almighty God.”

SAT, SEPTEMBER 10, 2022

King Charles Was Officially Proclaimed As Britain’s New Monarch On Saturday At A Ceremony In St James’s Palace Where Former Prime Ministers, Bishops And A Host Of Politicians Shouted “God Save The King”.

The death of 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth on Thursday after 70 years on the throne set in train long-established and highly choreographed plans for days of national mourning and a state funeral that will be held in just over a week.

Charles, 73, succeeded his mother immediately on Thursday but an Accession Council met on Saturday to proclaim his succession, with his son and heir William, wife Camilla and Britain’s new prime minister, Liz Truss, among those to sign the proclamation.

Making his personal declaration, Charles said: “In carrying out the heavy task that has been laid upon me, and to which I now dedicate what remains to me of my life, I pray for the guidance and help of Almighty God.”

The proclamation was also set to be read publicly in the other capital cities of the United Kingdom – Edinburgh in Scotland, Belfast in Northern Ireland, and Cardiff in Wales – and at other locations, too.

The death of Elizabeth, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, has drawn an outpouring of tributes from at home and around the globe. Landmarks have been used to celebrate her life, with buildings in Europe, America and Africa lit up in the red, white and blue of the United Kingdom.

In Britain, people started gathering outside royal palaces in the early hours of Saturday morning, with thousands flocking to Buckingham Palace to pay respects to the queen and Charles – who was proclaimed king at the nearby St James’s Palace.

“It’s a poignant time in our country’s history,” design manager Ian Bilboe, 54, said. “(We’re) here to be part of that and show respect to the late queen and also to the new king.”

Charles is king and head of state of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

‘NATION’S GRANDMOTHER’

Britain has declared a period of mourning until the state funeral for Elizabeth, once described by her grandson Harry as “the nation’s grandmother”. The date for that has not been announced but it is expected in a little over a week’s time.

Leaders from around the world are expected in London for the funeral, including U.S. President Joe Biden, who said on Friday he would attend.

Charles’ coronation as king will take place at a later date – and the timing for that is not yet clear. There was a 16-month gap between Elizabeth becoming queen in 1952 and her coronation in 1953.

The new king vowed on Friday to serve the nation with “loyalty, respect and love” in his first address to the nation as king.

King Charles proclaimed Britain's monarch at historic ceremony

Earlier on Friday, returning to London from Scotland where his mother died, he was greeted with cheers, applause and a crowd singing “God Save The King” as he made his first public appearance outside Buckingham Palace.

Charles also said in his address that he had made his eldest son William, 40, the new Prince of Wales, the title that had been his for more than 50 years and is traditionally held by the heir to the throne.

William’s wife Kate becomes Princess of Wales, a role last held by the late Princess Diana.

Thousands have gathered since Thursday at royal palaces to pay their respects to the late queen, with some shedding tears as they laid flowers and others wanting to celebrate the life of a monarch who for most Britons was the only they have ever known.

Elizabeth, who was the world’s oldest and longest-serving head of state, came to the throne following the death of her father King George VI on Feb. 6, 1952, when she was just 25.

Over the decades she witnessed a seismic change in the social, political and economic structure of her nation. She won praise for guiding the monarchy into the 21st Century and modernising it in the process, despite intense media scrutiny and the often highly public travails of her family.

Charles, who opinion polls indicate is less popular than his mother, now has the task of securing the institution’s future.

China’s Capital Beijing Has Been Speeding Up Construction Of The International High-Tech And Innovation Center In Recent Years, With Three Scientific Cities And An Economic Development Zone As The Main Platform To Effectively Support The Country’s Technological Independence And Self-Reliance.

Zhongguancun Science City, Huairou Science City, Future Science City as well as the Yizhuang Economic Development Zone cover less than 6 percent of Beijing’s city area, but they generate about one-third of the capital’s GDP, official statistics showed.

Boasting a group of companies and research institutes in blockchain, semiconductor, quantum information, integrated circuit and network security, Zhongguancun saw its research and development fees hit 239.30 billion yuan ($34.49 billion) in 2021, an increase of 20.4 percent year-on-year.

The number of unicorns totaled 50 in Zhongguancun, second only to Silicon Valley in the United States. Last year, high-tech enterprises there generated gross revenue over 3.5 trillion yuan, up 19.3 percent from 2020.

Moreover, Zhongguancun has yielded fruitful results in encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship, with solid steps taken to create a fair and favorable business environment.

For example, more than 140 small and medium-sized enterprises in the area have been subsidized in renting offices. Preferential policies have been issued to introduce high-end talents, especially postdocs in artificial intelligence, chip and quantum research to work in Zhongguancun. The protection of intellectual property rights has also been enhanced.

Currently, there are 1,548 specialized and sophisticated SMEs in the area, accounting for 37.4 percent of Beijing’s total.

Zhongguancun’s invention patents per 10,000 people is 617.2 pieces, 3 times more than the average of Beijing.

Huairou Science City in Huairou district and Future Science City in Changping district cover 100.9 and 170.6 square kilometers, respectively, aiming to establish a world-class scientific platform and demonstration zone along with Zhongguancun.

N. Korean Leader Says His Country Will Never Give Up Nuclear Weapons

BY LINE : THE NATION

SAT, SEPTEMBER 10, 2022

North Korean Leader Kim Jong-Un Publicly Expressed His Determination Not To Give Up The Country’s Nuclear Weapons, Accusing The United States Of Seeking The Collapse Of His Regime, Not Just Denuclearization.

He made clear that Pyongyang has no intention of resuming negotiations for denuclearization, as the North’s rubber-stamp parliament approved a new nuclear force policy during a key session earlier this week, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday.

“The aim of the United States is not just to eliminate our nuclear weapons themselves but also ultimately to bring down our regime anytime by forcing (North Korea) to put down nuclear weapons and give up or weaken the power to exercise self-defense,” Kim was quoted as saying in his speech at the Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) meeting the previous day.

He took issue with the US bid for the denuclearization of North Korea through the “biggest-ever sanctions and blockade.” He described it as a “misjudgment and miscalculation of adversaries.”

Most importantly, Kim added, the North should incessantly expand the scope of its “tactical nuclear operation” in order to bolster its nuclear combat posture.

His strong message came as the SPA adopted a new law that allows the regime to launch an “automatic nuclear strike” if it is attacked.

Under the law, a nuclear strike can be automatically and immediately carried out to destroy the origin of a provocation if the command and control system of the nuclear forces is in danger of an attack by “hostile forces,” the KCNA said.

The law gives leader Kim “monolithic command” and “all decisive powers concerning nuclear weapons,” it added.

Kim then stressed that legalizing the nuclear weapons policy has “great significance in drawing an irretrievable line” so that it can no longer bargain with its nuclear power.

He added that the “political and military conditions of the Korean Peninsula,” as well as the global political environment, must change for there to be any adjustment of the North’s nuclear policy.

Touching on domestic issues in his address, Kim called for a vaccination campaign against “the malicious virus,” apparently referring to COVID-19 and advised people to start wearing masks in November as immunity levels could fall around October.

Kim’s remarks added to the speculation about whether the North will respond to offers from Seoul and Washington on COVID-19 vaccine assistance.

At the meeting, Ri Son-gwon, the head of the North’s ruling party’s United Front Department tasked with handling inter-Korean relations, was promoted to a member of the Presidium of the SPA.

The SPA is the highest organ of power under the North’s constitution, but it rubber-stamps decisions by the ruling party.

It usually holds a plenary session in March or April to deal mainly with the budget and cabinet reshuffles.

Meanwhile, the North staged a large nighttime event in Pyongyang on Thursday to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the country’s foundation. Kim attended it together with his wife, Ri Sol-ju, the KCNA reported.

Nuclear talks between the US and the North have remained stalled amid little progress in inter-Korean reconciliation since the Hanoi summit between then US President Donald Trump and Kim ended without a deal in 2019. (Yonhap)
