US scientists have conducted a study into the world fittest and least fittest countries.

Using data collected from smartphones, researchers from Stanford University analysed how many steps more than 700,000 people from around the world took each day in a bid to try and find out which factors determine obesity levels.

The average number of steps taken by people worldwide was found to be 4,96 per day.

Hong Kong found to be the ‘fittest’ finishing at the top of the list with people taking an average of 6,880 steps per day.

Indonesia was found to be the laziest, taking the least amount of steps with an average of just 3,513.

Thailand was ranked in 31st place out of 46, with an average of 4,764 steps, just one place behind the United States in 30th which averaged 4,774 steps.

Thailand ranked considerably better than some of its Asean neighbours, with the Philippines ranked 43rd with an average of 4,008 steps and in 44th place was Malaysia with 3,963 steps.

Australia, Canada, New Zealand and India also fell below the average.

The study was published in the Nature journal and used data collected from the Argus app, which lets users track their daily activity, heart rate, food intake and sleep.

Interestingly, the results of the study found that ‘activity inequality’ was the highest importance rather than the average number of steps when it comes to determining obesity levels.

Countries with just a small gap between most and least active had low levels of obesity, while countries such as the USA and Mexico have similar averages, Mexico has a higher level of activity inequality, and as a result has higher obesity levels.

Gender was also a key factor. Countries higher levels of activity inequality found that women are less active than men, while countries with low levels of obesity found that men and women had similar amounts of activity.

“The study is 1,000 times larger than any previous study on human movement”, professor Scott Delp told the BBC.

“There have been wonderful health surveys done, but our new study provides data from more countries, many more subjects, and tracks people’s activity on an ongoing basis.

“This opens the door to new ways of doing science at a much larger scale than we have been able to do before.”

An auto dealer and car-racing businessman reportedly turned a gun on himself in his Bangkok condominium room on Thursday morning, police said.

Police said Parithat Poolphol, 45, managing director of Grand Eastern Co Ltd and Racing Spirit Co Ltd, shot himself with a 9mm pistol.

Police said he left a suicide note, saying he was under pressure because of his work.

He lived with his 20-year-old daughter. The daughter, who was in another room, heard the gunfire at 9.45am.

Racing Spirit has organised several racing events and is building a motor racing facility in Chon Buri with the budget of Bt4 billion.

It was later found that Parithat also recorded a clip on his cell phone talking about which of his assets would go to whom as an audio will.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) workers on Thursday tore down eight riverside homes located outside the Wat Chatkaew Chongkolnee community’s flood-barrier embankment coverage in Bangkok’s Bang Phlad district.

The residents who had lived there for decades reportedly cooperated with city officials to move out of the houses. The demolition will be complete in two days.

The wooden homes in Soi Charan Sanidwong 94 were the third batch that the BMA demolished to make way for the “Chao Phraya for All” riverbank development’s landscaping and construction of a dam. The Kieo Khai Ka community and the Kiak Kai community were the other areas demolished.

Police have traced one of the three suspects wanted for allegedly embezzling millions of baht in compensation money from a family. But she is already in jail for a drug conviction.

“Investigators have already gone to the prison to make sure she is detained for embezzlement charges too,” Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt General Sanit Mahathavorn said Thursday. “We will also track down the other two suspects.”

Earlier this week, a court approved arrest warrants for lawyer Pisit Sammalert, his wife Pornpavee Chukaew and Thitapa Sawasdee in connection with Pisit’s failure to hand over Bt4million compensation to Porntip Chantarat and her daughter, Pattarada Kaewpong.

Porntip lost her husband and was injured in an accident 12 years ago. The accident seriously injured the couple’s baby and Pattarada has since become wheelchair-bound.

A transport firm responsible for the accident had been ordered to pay the victim’s family Bt4 million compensation. But Pisit allegedly duped Porntip into assigning him to pick up the compensation on her behalf. He then took most of the money for himself.

Pornpavee and Thitapa are his alleged accomplices.

Pisit and Thitapa are now believed to be on the run.

Metropolitan Police Division 7 chief Pol Maj General Thirapong Wongratpitak said Pisit cancelled his subscription to cell-phone services after the scandal broke.

“But we will go after him,” Thirapong said.

Forest run-off from the Phetchabun Mountain Range in Phichit’s Chon Dan district inundated 60 homes in the downstream Dong Charoen district’s Tambon Huai Pook on Thursday.

The torrential run-off poured into Khlong Boraphet, eroding a four-metre-long section of canal bank before sending floodwater to canal-side homes in Ban Dai Leuk Moo 6 and Moo 8.

Suddenly finding their homes in one-metre-deep water, residents moved their belongings to higher ground in panic. But many items could not be saved in time.

Villager Wiroj Wongkhao said the flood came so fast and violent that he couldn’t save many belonging such as mattresses and a fridge.

District officials had delivered some flood relief bags, with necessary commodity items and drinking water, to the flood-hit residents, while other officials inspected the damage to homes and farmlands to request for more aid.

PHUKET: A 71-year-old Australian man fell to his death while parasailing at Kata Beach yesterday afternoon.

“Roger John Hussey was pronounced dead at Patong Hospital after he fell from a height of 40 meters, which caused severe injuries,” said Lt Suwisit Srirak of Karon Pplice.

Hussey was married to a Thai woman named by police as Boosabong Tongsanga who was recording a video of the incident.

The boat driver, Monthein Jandang, 45, and the parasail controller, Roongroj Rakcheep, 38 (who went in the air with Hussey), were charged with recklessness causing death.

“Roongroj told us that Mr Hussey was nervous and panicked, so he accidentally unbuckled the equipment. He added that he tried to tell Hussey to stay calm, but it was too late,” Lt Suwisit told the Gazette.

Monthein and Roongroj insisted that all the equipment was fully functional and in good condition. They also said that it was replaced every three months to ensure user safety.

Maintenance officers who examined the parasailing equipment after the accident found nothing broken.

However, police said it was illegal to operate the boat without the presence of a technician on board.

Boosabong said that she and her husband had watched people parasail for three days before he tried it and were confident that Mr Hussey could have handled it.

“My husband wanted to try it because it was a new experience for him. He was in good health and had no problems in his life that would have caused him to do this on purpose,” she said.

Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong expressed his condolence to the victim’s family and has called for an emergency meeting to discuss the matter.

A Chinese family of four has thanked Chon Buri’s Pattaya Tourist Police after they had arrested two tour guides Wednesday night for allegedly threatening them with physical harm after refusing to buy an additional tour package.

Pattaya Tourist Police Inspector Pol Lt Colonel Piyapong Ensarn led a team at 9pm on Wednesday to arrest Thai guide Chaitoon Soisaeng, 25, for allowing another person to perform tour guide duty without a proper licence.

Chinese national Liu Longzhe, 58, was also arrested for working as a tour guide in Thailand without permission. Piyapong said the arrest stemmed from a police complaint filed by the Chinese family of four who had toured Thailand during July 9-15 after paying for a 2,200-yuan-per-head package.

The family alleged that they had turned down Liu’s offer of an additional tour package worth 1,100 yuan (Bt5,500) on Tuesday and was told, “You must be careful of your safety throughout the stay in Pattaya”. The family claimed that Liu threatened them again next day and beat one family member.

They became fearful and lodged a complaint with the Tourist Police, the officer said.

Some 500 long-tailed macaques from a 3,000-strong population at Khao Takieb and Suan Ling areas in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district are being lured into cages prior to moving them for sterilization.

Local residents complained of too many monkeys, and too much monkey-theft mischief. The monkeys are getting used to the cages and Pantainorasingh Wildlife Sanctuary officials before they will be shut into the cages and transported to the Hua Hin Dog Shelter for sterilization by veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and from Mahidol University.

The macaques would be allowed some time to rest at the shelter before being released back into their home habitat. Officials hope the sterilization program will control the macaque population.

The 11-year-old Sa Kaew schoolgirl caught in the middle of a very adult dispute will tomorrow (July 14) finally be able to move into the small house built for her and her elderly adoptive father.

The formerly stateless child has also been granted Thai nationality.

The house in Wattana Nakhon district, built by soldiers and funded by public donations, was on Thursday granted house registration No 148.

The girl’s success in getting the house registered after considerable difficulty has prompted local people to incorporate the three “lucky” digits into their choices of lottery tickets.

The girl and her 84-year-old adoptive father planned to apply for an electrical connection on Thursday afternoon, in time for a ceremony tomorrow at which Maj-General Hathaithep Kiratiangkoon, commander of the 19th Army Circle, will formally present the house to her.

Tents and chairs were being set outside the house in preparation for the ceremony.

The schoolteacher who drew the ire of local administrative officials by scolding them on Facebook for not helping the girl followed up with a thank-you message on the youngster’s behalf.

The teacher’s earlier public complaint had allegedly earned a threat of being transferred out of the district.

Soldiers completed the one-bedroom house on June 25, but the would-be occupants couldn’t move in because they were denied a house registration. They’ve had to continue living in a derelict shack.

Visitors to Thailand from China and the CLMV nations (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) seeking medical treatment are now allowed to stay for up to 90 days visa-free, Deputy Prime Ministers Tanasak Patimapragon and Admiral Narong Pipatanasai announced on Wednesday.

And visitors age 50 and up from 14 other countries can apply for long-stay visas valid for up to 10 years.

Both measures are designed to fuel Thailand’s ambition to become a “medical and wellness” tourist destination and world-class medical hub.

As part of the Strategic Plan to Become a Medical Hub (2017-2026), the Cabinet has approved in principle the extended permission-to-stay for citizens of 19 countries identified as potential sources of medical tourists.

The Interior Ministry announced that visa-exempt entry for hospital care for patients from the CLMV countries and China who meet certain criteria is extended to 90 days effective immediately.

The same privilege – “meant to increase convenience of access to clinical care” – is also offered to as many as four people accompanying them.

Foreigners age 50 years or older from Britain, the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, France, Australia, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Denmark and Canada can apply for long-stay visas of up to 10 years.

Permission will initially be extended for five years, and an additional five years can be added for people who meet stated criteria and conditions.

The same privilege is offered to their spouse and children under 20.

The ministry said the measure would “hopefully lead to the increase of country income”.

The Public Health and Tourism and Sport ministries have been directed to work with relevant agencies in the public and private sectors to implement plans for developing the country’s medical-tourism capabilities.
