Cannes hails ‘heartrending’ Moroccan film about unmarried mothers

Maryam Touzani has never forgotten the day a young woman knocked on the door of her home in Tangier asking for work.

“She was from a village and she was heavily pregnant. My mother had no work for her but was afraid to let her go… she wasn’t in a good way and had clearly nowhere to go,” the Moroccan actress and director says.

Sex outside marriage is illegal in the Muslim-majority country, and at the time a single mother who tried to give birth in a hospital would be thrown in jail.

“The girl had been going door-to-door, so my mother took her in for a few days until we worked something out.

“But there was no solution – she had been going from town to town after running away from her family, working as a cleaner and hairdresser until people noticed her predicament and then she would have to move on.

Maryam Touzani, centre, poses with actresses Lubna Azabal, left, and Nisrin Erradi, right, the stars of her film “Adam”.

“So she stayed with us until she had the baby,” adds Touzani, whose powerful new film “Adam”, at the Cannes film festival, was inspired by the woman’s heartbreaking dilemma over what to do with the child.

“She wanted to give up her baby straight away to give him a chance of a decent life, and to restart her own and become a respectable woman again,” Touzani recalls.

But when the baby arrived, things weren’t so simple.

“Because she gave birth over a bank holiday weekend, she had to keep the baby until the adoption office opened. I was with her as she tried to suppress the maternal extinct, to put distance between herself and the child. It was painful to watch and really shook me.

“Little by little I saw her resistance break and the pain grow as the bank holiday drew to an end. I went with her to give the baby up,” Touzani says.

Moroccan director Maryam Touzani

The hell that woman went through came home to when she became pregnant herself shooting “Razzia”, a huge hit in the kingdom in 2017, which she wrote and starred in.

“When I felt the baby move inside me I began thinking of her and I understood. And straight away I started to write, it poured out of me…”

Already talked of as an Oscars foreignlanguage contender, “Adam” shines a light on a hidden woman’s world in the conservative North African country.

Critics at Cannes hailed how the first-time director turned this “deceptively simple story… into gold” with the Hollywood Reporter praising its “great delicacy… made heartrending by the superb performances of Lubna Azabal and Nisrin Erradi.”

In the film, a village girl who flees to Casablanca played by Erradi is reluctantly taken in by a widowed baker (Azabal) hiding her own grief.

While Touzani does not go there in her touching, intimate tale, unmarried mothers are complete pariahs in Morocco, she says, often regarded as prostitutes.

“It is the worst thing that can happen to a woman.”

Until 2004 their children’s birth could not even be registered, meaning they have no legal status. “They simply didn’t exist,” she explains.

The shame is so intense that “children are often sold or abandoned”, adding to the country’s army of street children.

“There are so many terrible stories,” Touzani says.

The writer-director has not shied from touching on raw nerves in her homeland.

Her husband Nabil Ayouch’s banned feature “Much Loved” was based on a documentary of the same name she made about prostitution.

It was branded “an affront to moral values and Moroccan women” shortly after its premiere at Cannes, with actress Loubna Abidar forced to flee to France after being attacked in the street in Casablanca.

“Razzia”, in which Touzani played the lead, also touched on taboos.

But she is convinced many who condemned the films in public were secretly pleased they had brought issues out into the open that Morocco needs to deal with.

“There is a facade that everything is all right on the outside even if people are tormented inside. It is good to let in some air and light, and people are relieved and happy things are being spoken about.”

“I am not at all afraid for ‘Adam’. In any case, nothing comes from fear.”

Taiwanese film curator, Kuo Ming-Jung is taking over from Thai filmmaker and critic Pimpaka Towira to lead the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) as the new programme director.

“Southeast Asian cinema is poised to become an important player in the international film industry. Ming-Jung brings on board her passion for Asian cinema and discovering new directors, which complements our current team and will allow us to shape the next chapter of SGIFF as we enter into our 30th edition. We would also like to thank Pimpaka for her contribution to the festival and championing new developmental programmes with us, such as the Southeast Asian Producers Network, to bolster the regional film scene,” says the festival’s executive director Yuni Hadi.

Ming-Jung was the programme director at Taipei Film Festival from 2014 to 2018. She has served on several juries and selection panels including at Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, and Locarno Film Festival. Meanwhile, Pimpaka will continue to lend her expertise as one of the festival’s programme consultants.

“SGIFF is an anchor festival in the region where the best and budding Southeast Asian talents gather to exchange ideas, deliberate and share their voice through cinematic works. I continue to be inspired by the community’s openness to collaborate, its camaraderie, and the beautiful stories told as a result of this unique spirit. I look forward to working closely with the SGIFF team to contribute and grow the ecosystem in my new role,” says Ming-Jung.

Now in its 30th edition, the festival also announced its shortlist of seven compelling short films and documentaries from Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam, which will receive its inaugural SGIFF Film Fund. Comprising Tan Ean Kiam Foundation-SGIFF Southeast Asian Documentary Grant (SEADOC) and SGIFF Southeast Asian Short Film Grant (SEASHORTS), the fund will help support the development and production of these stories to build the region’s portfolio.

The shortlists include “Some Women” by Quenyee Wong (Singapore), “68” by Tan Biyun (Singapore), “Aswang” by Alyx Ayn Arumpac (Philippines), “Ploy” by Prapat Jiwarangsan (Thailand), “Judy Free” by Che Tagyamon (Philippines), “Binh” by Ostin Fam (Vietnam), and “Nursery Rhymes” by Michael Kam (Singapore).

The festival continues its commitment to grow the independent film ecosystem in Southeast Asia through the introduction of the SGIFF Film Academy. It will bring together the festival developmental programmes such as Mentorship, Southeast Asian Producers Network, Southeast Asian Film Lab, and Youth Jury & Critics.

Veteran producer and transmedia filmmaker, Michel Reilhac, will take on the role as Head Mentor for the 2019 Southeast Asian Film Lab. He will work alongside two Lab Mentors – Hong Kong film producer, Teresa Kwong and Thai film editor, Lee Chatametikool. This year’s Youth Jury & Critics Programme will be led by Thai film critic, Kong Rithdee.

The 30th SGIFF will run from November 21 to December 1. Its call for entries for Feature and Short Films, Southeast Asian Film Lab, and Youth Jury & Critics Programme is now open and will continue until August 19.

Aladdin brings his genie to town

Disney brings the magic of the flying carpet back in “Aladdin”, a live-action adaptation of the animated classic.

Disney began its successful Aladdin franchise with an animated feature film of the same name that starred legendary comedian Robin Williams and featured such memorable songs as “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me”. The film grossed more than US$502 million in worldwide box office revenue, which led to successful stage productions on Broadway and abroad. Twenty-seven years later, Disney is now set to bring the magic and adventure on the flying carpet back again with its release of Disney’s Aladdin (2019), a thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of the animated classic. This article has a glimpse of the new magical spells awaiting to unfold to moviegoers in theatres.

Here are five magical elements awaiting in the new version of Aladdin.

Magic 1: Latest appearance of a Disney Princess

The new on-screen presence of Jasmine (Naomi Scott) will keep the audience spellbound with her beauty in gorgeous makeup and more than 10 wonderful costumes designed by Michael Wilkinson. Among the highlights not featured in the animated film are a bright pink corset dress with gold-and-turquoise details and an extravagant pumpkin-orange dress paired with a cape in coral with gold-and-magenta embroidery. In addition to Jasmine’s stunning costumes, makeup and hairstyles, director Guy Ritchie made sure that the princess truly connects with her modern-day audience through contemporary interpretation and portrayal of this character, including her attitudes against arranged marriage and the convention that a princess shall only marry a prince.

Magic No. 2: Genie’s Magical Power to Grant Wishes

The magical elements that have previously captivated fans in the animated film will blow everyone’s imagination again in this live-action version, ranging from the magic lamp and the rides on the flying carpet through to the power of the blue Genie, played by Will Smith, to grant three wishes. Smith pays homage to Robin Williams’ flawless performance in the original 1992 film while still making the role his in this new version. In addition, he has honed many of his performing skills to top up this live-action Genie with top-class acting, singing and dancing skills, including rapping.

Magic No. 3: Full Host of Visual Effects Brings Agrabah to Life

Disney’s live-action films are renowned for their true-to-life quality in every aspect of production, and this live-action Disney’s Aladdin is no exception. Almost every type of visual effect work was utilised, including character animation, performance capture, set extensions, digital environments and FX simulations. In addition to a massive Agrabah set built outdoors at a filming studio in London, the film was shot on location amidst the stunning desert vistas of Jordan, with robust support of a talented creative team to bring Agrabah to life, including director of photography Alan Stewart and production designer Gemma Jackson (Game of Thrones).

Magic No. 4: “A Whole New World” Will Brighten Up People’s Hearts

“A Whole New World” from 1992 won the original Disney’s Aladdin the 65th Academy Award for Best Original Song and the 36th Annual Grammy Awards for Song of the Year. The song continues to be a top hit worldwide. In the 2019 live-action adaptation, Disney has worked with first-class music crew to create songs that will brighten up the world anew. Eight-time Academy Award -winning composer Alan Menken provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Oscar-winning lyricists Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and includes two new songs written by Menken, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Thai fans can also look forward to hearing this beautiful song in a Thai version, too.

Magic No. 5: A Classic Rich in Comedy, Romance and Action-packed Adventure

Disney has recreated this live-action adaptation based on the original animated film scene by scene. The Cave of Wonders, the Sultan’s palace, the lavish parade of “Prince Ali” and the scene when Aladdin takes Jasmine on a night ride on the magic carpet above the sky of Agrabah, among others, will bring back fresh memory of the animated classic.

Besides its four main characters, Genie, Aladdin, Jasmine, and Jafar, the 2019 film features an addition of new, lively characters including Dalia (Nasim Pedrad) as Jasmine’s handmaiden and the girlfriend she confides in, as well as Prince Anders (Billy Magnussen) and Jafar’s right-hand man, Hakim (Numan Acar).

Traveloka, a leading technology company offerings online travel and lifestyle products for domestic and international destinations, has officially announced its newest flight feature innovation.

innovation. Known as “Multi-city”, it allows users to book flight tickets to several destinations in one transaction.

Users can easily add two additional destinations from and to several international destinations, such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, China, Europe, and the United Kingdom.

According to Mastercard Future of Outbound Travel in Asia Pacific (2016 to 2021) data, Thailand is expected to record annual outbound travel growth of 4.8 per cent during this period with the number of tourists expected to exceed 9.1 million people in 2021. This growth is also expected to increase, both due to business trips and leisure travel.

Caesar Indra, senior vice president of Traveloka’s Business Development, said: “We understand that outbound travel shows positive growth. This is also in line with our understanding and valuable input from our users to provide Multi-city flight features. When travelling abroad and staying in a country such as Japan, visitors often move from one city to another. For instance, they will arrive in Tokyo but move to Kyoto or Osaka and make the last city they visited their return flight location. By using Multi-city flight feature, we want to invite users to explore the world around them and remain also committed to continuing to accommodate users’ needs.”

To access the Multi-city flight feature, users should open the Traveloka application and on the main page, select the Flight icon product,

On the Search Flights page, select Multi-city; Select your 1st and 2nd flight destination, fill in passengers data and preference seat class; Click “Search” and page will show the results of a flight search that matches your flight destination

Multi-city flight feature is available in Traveloka application version 3.9 and above, both on Android & iOS devices, and can also be accessed on desktop computers.

The Multi-city flight feature is also equipped with Smart Combo service, where the service will show affordable airline ticket prices both for departure and return flight.

“With this new flight feature, we hope to be able to further enhance our user experience while strengthening the evidence of our commitment to provide end-to-end and integrated solutions for travel & lifestyle,” Indra added

IOC recommends suspending boxing federation from Tokyo 2020

sports May 23, 2019 09:22

By AFP

The International Olympic Committee recommended Wednesday that amateur boxing’s governing body be stripped of its right to organise the event at Tokyo 2020, but said the sport should still feature at the Games.

The guidance from the IOC’s executive board — almost certain to be rubber-stamped by the full IOC membership next month — followed a months-long investigation into alleged serious mismanagement at the crisis-riddled International Boxing Association (AIBA).

The probe “speaks for itself,” IOC president Thomas Bach told reporters in Lausanne.

He said the evidence details “extremely serious issues” within AIBA ranging from “deficiencies” in governance, to lack of due diligence and conflicts of interest.

In ousting AIBA from the Tokyo Games but creating a new path for boxers to compete, the IOC was seeking to ensure that athletes “can live their dream and participate in the Olympic Games” while making sure AIBA faced “the necessary consequences,” Bach said in a statement.

The IOC probe was led by audit firm Deloitte, and centred on subjects ranging from finances, governance and ethics to anti-doping, refereeing and judging.

The probe determined that AIBA has made “a lack of satisfactory progress,” in resolving its issues, the IOC said.

In a statement, AIBA said that it had “taken note of the announcement made by the IOC” but refused to be drawn on what it’s next move would be.

“AIBA is currently reviewing the report from the IOC and will not make any comments until further clarification is made, however AIBA does look forward to working with the IOC in the future,” it said.

Matthieu Reeb, Secretary General of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), told AFP that “no appeal would be possible until a final decision has been made” but that the Olympic Charter enables the CAS to rule on an appeal should AIBA decide to file one.

– Controversial leadership –

Formed in 1946, AIBA has overseen decades of signature Olympic moments, notably the 1960 gold medal win in Rome by Muhammad Ali, then known as Cassius Clay.

But its reputation has been tarnished in recent years as it careened from crisis to crisis.

Relations between AIBA and the IOC took a sharp downward turn following the 2016 Rio Games, when 36 officials and referees were suspended amid allegations of bout fixing.

An internal investigation by AIBA raised deeper questions about the judging in Rio, with particular suspicion falling on a French official.

Then in 2017, AIBA executives forced out the body’s president C.K. Wu, amid claims of multi-million dollar accounting fraud.

Wu, a Taiwanese national, denied wrongdoing and remains a member of the IOC, an indication that he retains the support of senior Olympic officials.

Wu was ultimately replaced by the controversial Uzbek businessman Gafur Rakhimov, who the US Treasury Department has linked to “transnational criminal organisations”.

Rakhimov, who stepped aside in March, vehemently rejects such charges and insists the allegations against him are “politically motivated lies”.

Bach said that because Rakhimov has been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department, dealing with AIBA posed a “high risk… (for) anybody who is subject to US jurisprudence.”

Complications surrounding Rakhimov’s designation by the US government “played a major role in the deliberations of the inquiry commission,” Bach said.

Rakhimov was replaced as interim president by Moroccan doctor Mohamed Moustahsane — the fourth head of AIBA in 18 months.

Before the announcement, AIBA’s leadership had insisted that the organisation had met all the requirements stipulated by the IOC.

The governing body’s chief executive Tom Virgets told AFP earlier this month that the organisation had “done everything that has been asked by the IOC”.

“Every single document asked, we produced, every single requirement we have met,” he said.

– Boxing in Tokyo –

Addressing boxers hoping to compete in 2020, Bach vowed that “there will be an Olympic tournament in Tokyo.”

The IOC has created a special taskforce led by Morinari Watanabe of the Japanese Olympic Committee to organise both the qualifiers and the Tokyo competition.

Details have yet to be hammered out, but the IOC said qualifications will take place between January and May 2020.

Boxers, Bach said, should rest assured that there will be a “fair competition in which all the athletes have equal and fair chances.

FIFA drops plans for 48-team 2022 World Cup

FIFA drops plans for 48-team 2022 World Cup

sports May 23, 2019 09:18

By AFP

FIFA shelved a proposed expansion of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to 48 teams on Wednesday, dealing a blow to the world football body’s president Gianni Infantino.

The 2022 tournament in the Gulf state will now be played with 32 nations taking part.

FIFA said it had abandoned the expansion plans “following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process” which led to the conclusion that “under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now”.

“(The tournament) will therefore remain as originally planned with 32 teams and no proposal will be submitted at the next FIFA Congress on 5 June,” FIFA said in a statement.

The expansion was a pet project of Infantino, who pushed the idea despite the likely need for Qatar’s neighbours to put aside a two-year blockade and help to host an expanded tournament.

“The involvement of these countries in the organisation of the tournament jointly with Qatar implies the lifting of this blockade, in particular the lifting of restrictions on the movement of people and goods,” said a feasibility study submitted to March’s FIFA Congress in Miami.

The study, seen by AFP, also claimed that a Qatar World Cup with 48 teams would generate “between $300-$400 million (265-354 million euros) of additional income”.

Specifically FIFA was counting on an additional $120 million in TV rights, $150 million in marketing rights and $90 million from ticket sales.

The news comes after Europe’s top football clubs said in March they would boycott an expanded 24-team Club World Cup — also backed by Infantino — which is planned to take place in June and July 2021, replacing the Confederations Cup tournament.

– Complicated proposition –

An announcement of the final decision had not been expected until next month’s FIFA Congress to be held in Paris ahead of the women’s World Cup that takes place in France between June 7 and July 7.

FIFA said it had examined the possibility of Qatar hosting a 48-team tournament on its own, but a study “concluded that due to the advanced stage of preparations and the need for a detailed assessment of the potential logistical impact on the host country, more time would be required and a decision could not be taken before the deadline of June”.

FIFA has dropped the plan to expand the 2022 tournament despite recommending in March that the number of teams should be raised to 48 for that tournament, ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Expanding the competition for the 2022 tournament was always a complicated proposition. FIFA had sounded out potential co-hosts in the region willing to support Qatar, a complicated proposition for Doha which is subject to an ongoing embargo by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and their allies.

Qatar’s Supreme Committee, charged with the organisation of the tournament, said in reaction to FIFA’s decision that “Qatar had always been open to the idea of an expanded tournament in 2022 had a viable operating model been found and had all parties concluded that an expanded 48-team edition was in the best interest of football and Qatar as the host nation.”

But it said there was insufficient time to make a deeper assessment before the June deadline and “it was therefore decided not to further pursue this option.”

“With just three and a half years to go until kick off, Qatar remains as committed as ever to ensuring the 32-team FIFA World Cup in 2022 is one of the best tournaments ever and one that makes the entire Arab world proud,” the Supreme Committee said.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain cut all ties with Qatar in June 2017, accusing Doha of supporting Iran and Islamist groups.

Qatar vehemently denies the charges and says Saudi Arabia and its allies are aiming to incite government change in the emirate, the world’s largest exporter of liquified natural gas.

Gulf states Kuwait and Oman have not taken sides in the crisis. However, Oman said in April it was “not ready” to host matches.

Italy underlined their supremacy over Thailand as the 2002 World champions scored a straight set victory 25-13 25-17 26-24 in the second round robin of the Volleyball Nations League in Opole, Poland on Wednesday.

The European team who won their only World title in 2002 and finished seventh in the Nations League last year employed their better teamwork and fast attacks to beat the Kingdom’s side for their second Pool 1 win. Italy have beaten Thailand 13 out of 15 encounters.

Thailand, with one win against Germany and one defeat will face host Poland tonight.

Thailand coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul says in the post- match interview that: “It’s good for Thailand team to play against a strong opponent like Italy. The Italians play really well on every position, so it is never easy to fight with them. We are happy that we can gain experience playing in a tournament like this one. I am sure that every piece of knowledge we get here, will make us better in the future. Today Italy play well in attack and that was the key to their win. Tomorrow we will play against Poland, we know them from Montreux Volley Masters, and we know what can be expected from this game.”

Thailand captain Nootsara Tomkom says: “We knew that it will be a difficult game for us. Italy is a strong team and they showed it today. They put pressure on us with service and it caused problems in our reception. In addition, our opponents played very fast today and it was hard for us to block them. Against Poland we have to play our volleyball and do our best. We met each other in Montreux so we know their style of play. I hope that this experience will be helpful for us.”

Thailand have been drawn to face four-time champions South Korea in today’s quarter-finals of  the Sudirman Cup after losing the Group 1 A last round robin to Japan on Wednesday in Nanning.

After beating Russia 3-2 on Tuesday, Thailand faced Japan in the battle for the top spot of the group that ended in the Japanese favour 1-4.

Kittinupong Kerdren and Nipitphon Phuangphuapet lost the opening men’s doubles rubber to Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda 14-21 13-21 before Thai No 2 Pornpawee Chohuwong saved three match points to upset world No 4 Akane Yamaguchi 9-21 21-14 22-20 in women’s singles.

The Thai resistance ended just there as they lost all remaining rubbers. Sitthikom Thammasin, despite  a 17-13 lead in the first game, failed to capitalize on his opportunity and  lost to world No 1 Kento Momota 19-21 10-21 in men’s singles.

World No 4 Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahasi sealed off the victory for Japan with a 21-17 21-17 win over Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai in women’s doubles,

Russia, with two defeatsm were out of the tournament.

Thailand face South Korea today at 5pm in the knock-out stage. Thailand finished third in the 2017 Cup.

Ariya returns from break  with new, laser-like focus

World No 4 Ariya Jutanugarn will today launch her defence of the Pure Silk Championship in Virginia on the back of a short break she says has done wonders for her mindset.

On the final day of last year’s event, Ariya carded six birdies in the final round to earn a playoff against In Gee Chun and Nasa Hataoka. It only took two extra holes and two birdies for the Thai to secure her first of three wins during the 2018 season and her second victory at the Kingsmill Resort River Course. Her first was in 2016.

The win was the catalyst of what became an impressive year for the former World No 1, who went on to win the US Women’s Open and the Scottish Open – she went on to sweep the season-ending players awards, including the Rolex Player of the Year.

At this year’s tournament, she is looking to start fresh, even if it means not dwelling on her 2018 accomplishments.

“It’s getting more tough and tough like when I try not compare myself to last year, but I still doing okay with that. Even like sometime I think about the outcome so much so it makes it harder to play well,” said Ariya. “I just really have to come back and focus on those things that are under my control. I’ve been working on that with my coach. So I think I’m getting better.”

Her highest finish this year was at the LOTTE Championship, where she tied for third. She said it was in Hawaii that she started to feel herself focus on her “process,” thanks in part to her team around her.

“I feel I’m so lucky, because every time I feel I am struggling they help me, they support me, they always give me the best support,” she said.

With a two-week break under her belt, the Thai feels rejuvenated and ready to keep her mindset in check. A win this week would make her the second three-time winner of this event, along with Cristie Kerr.

“During the last few months the only thing I have been thinking is that I want to play well. I want to finish top 10. I keep asking like why. I keep asking myself why,” said Ariya.

“But right now I’m just going to tell myself how I’m going to do this. So just come back to that. I think I’m on my way.”
