SCG has accelerated its growth strategy by announcing its latest investment of Bt21.15 billion in PT Fajar Surya Wisesa Tbk (Fajar), one of the largest packaging paper providers in Indonesia.

Roongrote Rangsiyopash, SCG’s president and CEO, said: “SCG is pushing forward long-term growth as one of its key strategies this year by continuously expanding its businesses in Asean countries. Recently, SCG’s packaging arm bought a 55 per cent stake in Fajar, a leading packaging paper company that is listed in the Indonesian stock exchange. This investment is valued at approximately 9.6 trillion rupiah [approximately Bt21.15 billion] and is expected to be completed in the third quarter, whereby financing will come from internal sources. For future growth opportunities in the packaging business, SCG is in the process of exploring the feasibility of raising equity at the SCG packaging level. This feasibility study should be completed by yearend.

“The major shareholding in Fajar will allow SCG to enhance its growth in Asean, especially in Indonesia. Considering Indonesia’s population of 270 million and its per capita consumption of packaging paper, the market-growth potential there is almost three times that of Thailand.”

Over the years, SCG’s packaging business has demonstrated an ability to grow progressively and act promptly when required to handle business challenges. The business aims at becoming a leading total packing solutions provider by establishing more production bases in Asean countries, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Furthermore, the packaging arm of SCG has been developing innovative technology to add value to products, services and the production process to fulfill the needs of enterprises and consumers. The business is also driving the “circular economy” in line with the SCG’s practice, which aims to maximise efficient resource utilisation.

Packaging business recorded Bt87.25 billion in revenue from sales and Bt6.31 billion in profit for 2018. Meanwhile, with a total sale of 1.38 million tonnes of packaging paper in 2018, Fajar registered sales of 9.94 trillion rupiah (about Bt21.90 billion) and recorded profits of 1.41 trillion rupiah (about Bt3.10 billion).

Bgrimm’s Q1 profit surges in first quarter

B Grimm Power Plc (BGRIM) reported a 101 per cent upsurge in first-quarter’s net profit, propelled largely by earnings from growing sales volume including the newly-acquired Glow SPP 1 operations.

The leading private power producer recorded Bt687 million in normalised net profits, excluding foreign exchange effects and expenses unrelated to operations, in January-March. Of this, Bt443 million is attributed to the parent.

Revenues leaped 25.8 per cent from the same period last year to Bt10.25 billion, or a 3.3 per cent increase from the last quarter of 2018, as BGRIM began to tap incremental revenue inflow from a host of power projects.

Key to BGRIM’s remarkable first-quarter revenue are contributions from three co-generation projects namely ABPR3, ABPR4 and ABPR5 in Rayong’s Amata City Industrial Estate, as well as seven ground-mounted solar-power facilities for government agencies and cooperatives – all successfully brought on stream in 2018.

Lower financial costs involving loan settlements and fewer shutdowns of power plants for maintenane also contributed to robust first-quarter financial results, according to BGRIM CEO Preeyanart Soontornwata.

BGRIM’s assuming operation of the 124MW co-generation facility in WHA Eastern Industrial Estate (Map Ta Phut), Rayong, bought from Glow SPP1 Co Ltd in February, also enhanced the company’s first-quarter bottom-line.

However, the increase in the price of natural gas, a main fuel for BGRIM power plants, has put constraints on first-quarter profitability.

Yet, there is a trend towards a drop in natural gas price from March onwards with fewer maintenance shutdowns of BGRIM power plants scheduled compared to those in the first quarter.

BGRIM’s combined installed generating capacity at the end of the first quarter this year was 2,200MW.

TRIS Rating has affirmed the company rating on Sansiri PLC (SIRI) and the ratings on SIRI’s senior unsecured debentures at “BBB+”. The ratings reflect the company’s diverse product portfolio, strong market position in both landed property and condominium segments, and higher contribution from business management income and share profit from its joint ventures (JVs).

The ratings reflect the company’s diverse product portfolio, strong market position in both landed property and condominium segments, and higher contribution from business management income and share profit from its joint ventures (JVs).

The ratings also take into consideration SIRI’s high level of selling and administrative expenses and its aggressive financial leverage.

Fitch said ratings continue to reflect the cyclicality and competitive environment in the residential property development business and the lingering high household debt.

The impact from the introduction of new loan-to-value (LTV) rules by the Bank of Thailand (BOT) may also affect demand for condominiums in the short term.

Diversified product portfolio, with well-accepted brands in residential property market

TRIS Rating views that SIRI’s product portfolio is well-diversified. The company offers condominium, single-detached house (SDH), and townhouse units to different market segments. SIRI’s condominium units cover low- to high-end segments, with selling prices ranging from Bt50,000 to Bt400,000 per square meter.

SIRI offers SDH units under the Kanasiri, Habitia, Saransiri, Burasiri, Setthasiri, Narasiri, and Baan Sansiri brands. Its SDH units are priced from Bt4 million to Bt240 million. Townhouse units are sold under the Habitown, Met Town, Siri Place, Siri Avenue, Town Avenue, and B Avenue brands. SIRI offers townhouse units with unit prices ranging from Bt2 million to Bt6 million.

Digital transformation underway

THE NATION

FINANCIAL technology (fintech) has taken the lead in Thailand’s digital transformation process, to be followed by e-commerce in the next five years, said Pete Chemsripong, general manager of ThoughtWorks (Thailand), a global tech-consulting firm.

“Knowledge of how new technology can re-model businesses is still limited to websites and applications,” he said.

In the past few years, we have seen the rise of financial technology and its adoptation by financial institutions and new companies, setting the first stage of a technological transformation in the country, Pete told The Nation.

But, when it comes to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), there is little awareness of what digital technology has to offer in terms of improving daily operations, he said.

Pete predicts that after fintech, e-commerce would be the next technological trend, before transformation in other segments such as agriculture and education. He, however, expects the Thai public sector to lag behind in undergoing a holistic digital transformation.

With fintech leading the charge in transforming the economy, key financial institutions have been funding tech startups to strengthen the ecosystem in Thailand.

Krungsri Finnovate, a corporate venture capital (CVC) arm of Krungsri, plans to invest up to US$50 million (Bt1.577 billion) in seven tech startups this year, focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics, according to Sam Tanskul, managing director of Krungsri Finnovate.

One of its investments, which has been finalised, saw Finnovate teaming up with a Singapore-based startup “Silot”. The company develops QR code-payment systems and is currently working on AI to help banks streamline their operations.

Silot has already developed a QR code-payment system for Krungsri Bank while Krungsri Finnovate has so far invested $2 million in the company.

Digital Ventures, the startup investment and development subsidiary of Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), plans to invest $55 million in “deep tech” startups over the next two years.

Meanwhile, Kasikorn Vision (KVision), an investment holding company of Kasikornbank, has set aside $245 million as seed money for startups in the Asean region.

“Digital technology is the competitive advantage,” Pete said, adding, “it blurs market competition”.

For example, he said, banks nowadays do not only compete with each other for daily transactions as e-commerce and social messaging companies can also develop their own digital payment systems in direct competition with financial institutions.

“To fully capitalise on the opportunities arising from the digital disruption in the market, firms must see technology as a core issue,” he continued.

“Instead of assessing the performance of the company by departments, with the issue of technology falling only to the IT department, firms should instead assess their performance holistically, especially when it comes to technology.”

Furthermore, the rise of digital technology also allows SMEs to compete with big corporates.

“The number of franchises or branches do not matter that much these days as firms can now get in touch with their customers online and learn more about their behaviours through data analytics,” Pete said.

However, the key challenge for SMEs in the process of technological transformation is the lack of awareness and know-how in implementing changes, he contended.

Nevertheless, with the digital transformation underway, many businesses have followed the trend with a number of logistics and agricultural firms starting to use machine learning to improve their operations.

Amid growing demand from corporate clients for new technology, ThoughtWorks is striving to meet their needs.

The company will increase the number of tech consultants based in Thailand, currently 40, by 30 per cent this year.

The consulting company will also hire foreign talent to further strengthen its workforce and services, offering efficient and holistic advice to companies seeking new technology for better performance.

YANGON

WITH MAJOR infrastructure and logistics initiatives being pushed, on top of being home to seven million people, foreign investors should not hesitate to invest in Yangon, officials told the Yangon Investment Forum 2019 on Friday.

Thaung Tun, chairman of the Myanmar Investment Commission and Union minister for investment and foreign economic relations, said Myanmar’s commercial hub Yangon remains attractive as the nation’s premier investment location, ensuring a level playing field for all investors.

“Yangon has been the primary driver of our growth, accounting for 24 per cent of the country’s GDP [gross domestic product] and growing at an average of 9.2 per cent annually,” he said.

“The city is expected to grow to over 10 million people by 2030. It has the country’s largest concentration of young and well-educated population.”

He expects Yangon to become a major trade and logistics hub in Asean, as it has Myanmar’s largest air, rail and sea ports, which together serve as the primary ingress point for its imports, accounting for 85 per cent of the nation’s trade.

Traffic through Yangon’s ports continues to rise with a total of 2,267 vessels calling at the Yangon Port in the last fiscal year, increasing 13 per cent over the past four years.

Yangon is also home to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone and 29 industrial zones.

“Myanmar’s investment landscape has undergone tremendous reforms in recent years, despite headwinds at home and abroad,” he said.

In order to ensure Myanmar maintains a favourable and friendly investment climate, the nation must lower the barriers to doing business as well as to eliminate challenges investors face when seeking to enter the market, he warned.

“We are pushing ahead with the establishment of a single-window system for investment facilitation,” he said.

“We have created MyCo, a new company registry platform, allowing companies to easily register online. We have digitalised much of the investment application process.”

Last year, the new Myanmar Investment Promotion Plan was launched to attract responsible quality investments. The government will ensure developing the private sector by supporting young entrepreneurs and empowering women.

“Their voices must be heard alongside more established players,” he said.

“We will continue to listen closely to the business community in order to better understand their needs and act accordingly.”

State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said in a video address working together with the private sector would ensure a sustainable business environment.

“I am a strong believer in the power of collaboration to achieve Myanmar’s development goals,” she said.

She encouraged investors to consider public-private-partnership mechanisms, which could attract quality investors. She considered Yangon the “heart of enterprising Myanmar”.

Myanmar is currently developing the Project Bank, which will eventually serve as a one-stop digital information centre for strategic infrastructure projects. Upon completion, key information relating to the projects will be transparently disseminated.

“Once the development of the online database system is complete, access to key information will be available at the click of a button,” she said.

“This will enhance not only transparency but also predictability with respect to project identification and prioritisation, and will contribute towards creating a more secure investment enabling environment.”

Suu Kyi sees trade and investment as the two major drivers of Myanmar’s economic growth. She foresees a substantial increase in investment inflows into the manufacturing sector, as it accounted for 31 per cent of total investments and contributed to 24 per cent of GDP in fiscal year 2018.

“For those who are thinking of investing in Myanmar, we warmly invite you to come and invest here [Yangon], Asia’s final frontier economy,” she said.

Klopp: Premier League near-miss is only Liverpool’s ‘first step’

Jurgen Klopp vowed this season was just the “first step” for his Liverpool team as he congratulated Manchester City on pipping his side to the Premier League title on Sunday.

Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday thanks to two goals from Sadio Mane, but City came from behind to win 4-1 at Brighton and retain their title by a single point.

It meant Liverpool ended the season on 97 points, the third-highest tally in Premier League history, but fell agonisingly short of securing their first English top-flight title since 1990.

“Congratulations to Manchester City,” Liverpool boss Klopp told the BBC. “We tried everything to make it as difficult as possible but not difficult enough. I couldn’t be more proud of the boys.

“It’s incredible what they did all season and today was a strange situation. We were really good until 1-0, what happened then was clear. You can’t tell the people to calm down.”

City trailed for 83 seconds after Glenn Murray’s first-half header for Brighton, briefly putting Liverpool two points clear at the top as it stood, but Pep Guardiola’s side fought back to ultimately win with ease.

“At that moment (when Liverpool fans celebrated Brighton’s goal) it was a shock for everyone and Wolves were there,” added Klopp.

“We had to fight. In the end we scored two and kept a clean sheet. It’s nice but not how we wanted it.

“It’s clear we had to work hard and City too. Our target during the week was to get 97 points, we got that — that’s special. We want to write our own history and we did.

“Today feels not so good but we have plenty of time to prepare for an important game in three weeks (Champions League final).”

– ‘We’ll be there again’ –

Klopp hailed his team’s progress in the past year, having needed a 4-0 victory over Brighton on the final day of last season just to finish fourth.

“The boys were all there from last season apart from (goalkeeper) Alisson,” he said. “He had a big impact but all the rest were here last season.

“It’s a very special season, a better season than I played with my team (Borussia Dortmund) when we were champions in Germany. But we cannot ignore one team were better.

“It’s clear we were lucky in moments, like City were. We were unlucky against City but scored in the last second against Everton and late on against Newcastle, they could have been draws as well…

“They (City) have 198 points in two years, that’s special. We made such big steps. It’s only the first step. Always after a good year we lost key players (in the past) but we won’t (this time) so we’ll be there again.”

Liverpool could yet be crowned European champions for a sixth time if they beat English rivals Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.

And Klopp told Sky Sports: “We have three weeks to prepare for the Champions League final — let’s give it a go.”

Novak Djokovic said his impressive burst of form which won him a third Madrid Open title and 33rd Masters could prove decisive in his assault on the French Open.

The world number one joined Rafael Nadal on top of the all-time Masters list when he swept to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday’s final in the Spanish capital.

“At this very important time for me in the season, the win gives me a lot of confidence prior to Rome and, of course, Roland Garros where I definitely want to play my best,” said the 15-time major winner.

Djokovic dominated a clearly exhausted Tsitsipas less than 24 hours after the 20-year-old Greek had stunned five-time champion Nadal in a semi-final which ended around midnight on Saturday.

Djokovic and Nadal will now attempt to claim a 34th Masters title in Rome this week in a key indicator ahead of Roland Garros which gets under way on May 26.

Djokovic credits a keys wins in Madrid with helping him to his first final since winning the Australian Open three months ago.

He will be bidding to collect his fourth consecutive title at a Grand Slam when he plays in Paris where he was also champion in 2016.

“This win was very important for my level of confidence because after the Australian Open I wasn’t playing my best,” he said.

“I wasn’t finding the right game and the consistency on the court in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo.

“I felt like I was close and needed a little bit of a push, which came yesterday against Dominic Thiem in the semi-final in a very close match.”

Djokovic never let Tsitsipas get into gear in a final which lasted just over 90 minutes

The Greek, who beat Djokovic in their previous meeting last summer in Canada, was broken once in each set, enough of a margin for the top seed to take the trophy, his second of the season after the Australian  Open.

The Serb still needed four match points to get the job done with Tsitsipas finally beaten when Djokovic sent a winning volley into the corner.

“He has the best backhand that I have ever seen in a human being,” said Tsitsipas of his opponent.

“He controls it so well. He can play cross, he can play down the line the same way. And that’s very difficult to deal with.

“He deserved the victory, he played unbelievable. I couldn’t do much.”

Tsitsipas was playing his second Masters 1000 final after losing to Nadal in Toronto last August.

Manchester City win thrilling title race, break Liverpool hearts

sports May 13, 2019 06:43

By AFP

Manchester City retained the Premier League title in style on Sunday, holding their nerve to come from behind and thrash Brighton to hold off a charging Liverpool after a nailbiting campaign.

Pep Guardiola’s team won 4-1 at Brighton to finish with 98 points — the second-highest total in Premier League history — as Liverpool beat Wolves 2-0 at Anfield to finish a single, agonising, point adrift.

City, who strung together 14 league wins at the end of the season, are the first side to retain the title since their bitter rivals Manchester United managed the feat in 2009, and remain on course for the first domestic treble in English football history.

But Guardiola’s team did not have it all their own way as they won a fourth English title in eight seasons and the sixth in the club’s history.

A day of drama on England’s south coast was in keeping with an astonishing season in which the lead switched hands time after time.

Liverpool drew first blood on Sunday, with Sadio Mane striking in the 17th minute to put them mathematically top of the table and on course for their first English top-flight title since 1990, before the Premier League era even started.

City fans’ nerves were shredded even further when Glenn Murray put Brighton in front from a corner in the 27th minute, drawing a huge roar at Anfield.

But those cheers were quickly muted, with Guardiola’s side level just 83 seconds later, Sergio Aguero staying onside and keeping his cool to finish after a brilliant ball from David Silva.

Ten minutes later, the unmarked Aymeric Laporte rose to head in Riyad Mahrez’s corner to complete the turnaround for City and second-half goals from Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan put the result beyond doubt.

– ‘Hardest Premier League’ –

“We have to say congratulations to Liverpool and thank you so much –- they pushed us to increase our standards,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“It’s incredible, 98 points, to go back-to-back. We made the standard higher last season and Liverpool helped us –- to win this title we had to win 14 in a row. We couldn’t lose one point.”

“It’s the toughest title we have won in all my career, by far,” added the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss.

City jetted back north to celebrate with around 10,000 of their own fans at their Etihad Stadium late into the evening, with supporters singing along to “Wonderwall” by Oasis.

Players took it in turns to hoist the Premier League trophy, with club captain Vincent Kompany and Guardiola last to lift it, together.

“I’m so, so proud,” said Kompany as the party got underway at 22:45 local time. “This team is amazing. We’re able to fill this place at this time of night. Thank you so much.”

City finished a record 19 points clear of Manchester United last season, but this term has been a totally different campaign.

Guardiola’s side had to dig deep to see off the relentless challenge of Liverpool, who lost just one Premier League game all season.

The outcome was cruel on Liverpool, who are second behind only United in the all-time list of English champions with 18 titles.

– Klopp vow –

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praised City but vowed his side would be back.

“City got the points they have because we were there,” he told the BBC.

“They have 198 points in two years, that’s special. We made such big steps. It’s only the first step. Always after a good year we lost key players (in the past) but we won’t (this time) so we’ll be there again.”

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah shared the Premier League Golden Boot award with teammate Mane and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after they all scored 22 goals.

The Merseysiders’ points tally is the third-highest in Premier League history.

Klopp’s side travelled to face City at the Etihad in January with the chance to open up a 10-point lead but the defending champions won 2-1 in what turned out to be the pivotal match of the campaign.

Liverpool suffered a blip in late January and February, held to a series of draws, but they found their form again and relentlessly harried City, finishing with nine straight league wins.

Klopp’s team will have to put the disappointment behind them as they prepare to face Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.

Elsewhere on the final day of Premier League action, Spurs made mathematically certain of a place in the top four, drawing 2-2 against Everton.

Arsenal beat Burnley 3-1 while fellow Europa League finalists Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Leicester but secured third place.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United finished their season with a whimper, losing 2-0 at home to relegated Cardiff — a side he once managed.

There were also wins for Crystal Palace, Newcastle and West Ham. Southampton and relegated Huddersfield drew 1-1.

Krabi – Former allergy patient Prawit Somnin and Ukrainian travel agent Olena Nikitas stole the limelight in the Bangkok Airways Krabi Half Marathon by leaving their opponents far behind to win the men’s and women’s 21km categories at Thara Park yesterday.

Surat Thani-based Prawit crossed the line first in 1:26.58  hours, several minutes ahead of Rattananit Buathong who had to be content with the second best with his time of 1:30.25 hours. It was one of his biggest wins after he won the 10km event at this tournament last year.

“I’m quite happy with my time with an average of 4.12 minute per kilometer,” said the 44-year-old worker of a palm oil company. “I did quite well judging from the tough route with so many hills. My strategy is to run with short step on the hills,” added Prawit a former National Junior Games athlete who had to resume running when he was diagnosed with allergy five years ago.

“I couldn’t breathe properly back then. Doctor suggested I should exercise get rid of allergy. I also stopped smoking and drinking from then on,” said Prawit whose has his eyes firmly fixed on a full marathon in Hat Yai on May 26.

“I used this event as a  warm up before my first full marathon tournament. I train quite hard every day ( two in the morning and three in the afternoon) to make sure that I can compete with others,” Prawit added.

In the women’s event, Nikitas of Ukraine produced her personal best of 1:32.36 hours to beat Thailand’ , Naleewan Rattanaphan who came far second in 1:47.22 hours.

“I’m quite happy because this is the best time for me in 21km. I spend six months in Thailand for running and the rest of the year in Ukraine,” said the 36-year-old from Laviv who has posed top three finishes in nine events over the past five months. She also won in Surat Thani and Phannga ahead of the Sunday’s victory.

More than 3,500 athletes competed in the opening stop of all six Bangkok Airways Boutique Series. The next series is due in Samui on June 2 while the remaining four are in Lampang on July 7, Phuket on August 4, Chiang Rai on September 15 and Chiang Mai  on November 3
