The Department of Special Investigation on Monday morning learned about a group of fraudsters that has tricked people out of millions by posing as the Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA).

The academy’s deputy secretary-general Wanlop Yutithamdamrong said the group had created fake CRA Line and Facebook accounts to dupe people into paying for their alternative Covid-19 shot. The group insisted all transfers be made via PromptPay, which is not used by the actual CRA.

Wanlop said the fraudsters had stolen a list of people who had been vaccinated by hacking into a hospital’s system. The hospital, which is part of the CRA vaccination campaign, filed a complaint when it learned of the hacking. The list was displayed on the group’s fake Facebook page to add credibility.

Wanlop said he had filed a complaint at the Thung Song Hong Police Station before calling on DSI to consider taking on the case, especially since it affects a lot of people and involves millions of baht.

DSI director-general Pol Lt-Colonel Korrawat Panprapakorn said DSI will look into the case and take it on if it meets the criteria.

The Social Development and Human Security Ministry sacked its social development officer on Sunday for allegedly embezzling relief funds earmarked for people affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Pisan Sukjaitham was nabbed by immigration police as he tried to cross the border into Myanmar from Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

The man showed up on the radar after the ministry filed charges against him on September 14. He had alleged transferred 13 million baht earmarked for vulnerable people to his own account.

The suspect has denied charges so far. He was transferred to the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases on Monday morning.

Patcharee Arayakul, the ministry’s permanent secretary, said Pisan’s bank account has been frozen to ensure the money is not transferred to anyone else. She added that the ministry has set up an investigation team and has asked the Anti-Money Laundering Office to check if anyone else was involved in the case.

“Initial investigation showed that Pisan had transferred the cash to his account and was planning to escape before the State Audit Office conducted its annual check,” she said.

She added that the ministry will study the case and improve the system to ensure no such incidents take place in the future.

“All passwords have been changed to stop the suspect from transferring cash,” she added.

A large Asiatic black bear strayed into a village in Sa Kaew’s Wang Sombun district on Saturday morning but was soon rescued by wildlife officials and taken to a breeding station.

Officials from the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, along with a veterinarian team from Chonburi’s Bang Lamung Wildlife Breeding Station showed up at the Phraichit village as soon as they learned about the bear.

The team then shot a tranquiliser dart at the animal before capturing it. The bear, a 120-kilogram female, was found to be about 15 years old and appeared to suffer from eyesight problems.

Later in the day, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation announced on Facebook that veterinarians had decided to keep the bear at the breeding station. They believe the bear’s failing eyesight will make it tough for it to survive in the wild.

After Khon Kaen’s “walking on the moon” TikTok clip won an almost immediate response from provincial authorities, a local in Udon Thani decided to take the same steps.

Earlier this month, a resident of Khon Kaen’s Kranuan district had dressed up as an astronaut and pretended the bumpy Huai Jot-Nong No Road was the surface of the moon.

The clip went viral and caught the attention of local authorities.

Inspired by this clip, a resident in Udon Thani’s Chaiyawan district did the same on a road filled with bumps and potholes.

As expected, the clip caught the officials’ attention and they announced the road will be fixed soon.

The Public Health Ministry will send Comprehensive Covid-19 Response (CCR) teams to Phuket to test up to 25,000 people in a bid to boost tourists’ confidence, the ministry’s deputy permanent-secretary Dr Yongyos Thammawut said on Sunday.

“Nine CCR teams from regional public health offices 11 and 12 will be dispatched from September 21 to 23,” he said. “They will test up to 25,000 Phuket residents for Covid-19. Those who test positive but are asymptomatic will be sent into the home-isolation system, while symptomatic patients will be admitted to hospital.”

Yongyos said with these tests, tourists visiting under the Phuket Sandbox scheme can rest assured they are safe from contracting Covid-19 from locals.

The province of Phetchaburi is awaiting approval to lift Covid-19 preventive measures and reopen the popular Cha-am beach to tourists until 11pm. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) is expected to make the decision on Monday, the provincial deputy governor said.

Phetchaburi deputy governor Nathawut Phetpromson told reporters after a meeting with the province’s Committee of Communicable Disease on Sunday that the meeting resolved to relax and adjust Covid-19 measures.

“The province has considered lifting restrictions in a bid to ameliorate the economic and social impact. We have proposed adjusting the curfew hours to 10pm-4am, while Cha-am city is to be open for tourists until 11pm. Group activities and social traditions can include no more than 50 people, and not more than 100 people in Cha-am. The gatherings must strictly follow the safety measures,” said Nathawut.

“Parks and sports fields can be open until 9pm, and sports competitions can be held with a maximum of 50 attendees. Department stores, shopping centres, food and beverage outlets, convenience stores and markets are also allowed to open until 9pm. Beauty salons and barber shops are allowed to resume normal service hours,” the deputy governor added.

The National Health Security Office has distributed 121,922 sets of antigen test kits (ATKs) for Covid-19 to 60,691 people in the risky group since September 16.

“However, so far only 6,947 test results, or about 6 per cent of total ATKs distributed, have been received,” NHSO secretary-general Dr Jadet Thammathat-Aree said on Sunday.

People in risky groups that fit the following criteria are eligible for two sets of ATKs per person:

▪︎ Those aged over 60 years, bed-ridden patients, disabled people, and those with seven underlying health problems

▪︎ Those displaying symptoms of fever, coughing, loss of sense of smell and taste, difficulty in breathing

▪︎ Those residing in the same house as an infected patient

▪︎ Those working as a community coordinator

The NHSO reported that 54 of those who had submitted the results had tested positive. “Thirty-four people who tested positive live in Bangkok, 9 in Samut Prakarn, 5 in Nonthaburi, 3 in Phuket, 2 in Saraburi and one in Ayutthaya. They have been admitted to a hospital for treatment,” he added.

Jadet also urged people who have received the ATKs to use them as soon as they can so that those who test positive can isolate themselves from others to prevent the virus spreading and get treatment early on.
