The remote Faroe Islands has promised to review its four-century-old tradition of hunting dolphins, following global outrage over last weekends hunt in which nearly 1,500 of the sea mammals were slaughtered by locals.

Faroe Islands to review annual dolphin hunt following global outcry

In a statement, the government of the semi-independent Danish territory said it would evaluate the regulations surrounding the annual hunt known as the Grindadrap.

“We take this matter very seriously,” Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen said Thursday. “Although these hunts are considered sustainable, we will be looking closely at the dolphin hunts, and what part they should play in Faroese society.”

Last Sunday’s catch of 1,428 Atlantic white-sided dolphins is estimated to be the largest in Faroese history, and may have even been too great a catch to feed the the entire 50,000-person population of the territory located halfway between Scotland and Iceland.

Hunters in the Faroe Islands have been killing whales and dolphins since Viking times. Their meat is considered a key part of Faroese culture and is shared out among the community.

According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a survey of Faroese adults revealed that 7 percent of respondents consumed pilot whale meat and blubber regularly with almost half (47 percent) admitting they rarely or never ate them.

Environmentalists and marine conservation organizations have long condemned the annual killing, but outrage was particularly rife this year given the size of the pod.

Conservation organization Sea Shepherd denounced the killings, deeming the event a “brutal and badly mishandled massacre,” while social media users reacted to photos of bloody waters and beach-strewn dolphin carcasses in horror.

The government acknowledged that the latest hunt “raised some issues,” and admitted last Sunday’s drive was “extraordinary” because the dolphin pod was “several times larger” than usual and that hunters had severely underestimated the size of the group.

The average of white-sided dolphins killed in each year’s hunt is usually estimated to be around 250, making last week’s haul six times larger than usual, which presented issues for locals who struggled to handle the pod.

Hunters round up the dolphins for hours, using jet-skis and boats, before eventually slaying the creatures for their meat and blubber. The practice is “legal but it’s not popular,” Sjurdur Skaale, a Danish lawmaker for the Faroe Islands, told the BBC last week.

“For such a hunt to take place in 2021 in very wealthy island community just 230 miles from the (United Kingdom) with no need or use for such a vast quantity of contaminated meat is outrageous,” said Robert Read, Sea Shepherd’s chief operating officer.

Dolphin drives have been adapted in recent years to make them more humane, with hunters asked to use a special tool to kill the animals and to hold a license. Given the size of last week’s slaying, some animal rights campaigners expressed concerns that the animals may not have been killed using the correct methods, meaning they may not have died instantly.

According to Skaale, if equipment specially designed to quickly sever the spinal chord of the whale or dolphin is used correctly, the creatures are killed in “less than a second.”

According to a recent poll from Kringvarp Føroya, the national broadcaster of the Faroe Islands, more than 83 percent of the population continue to support the killing of pilot whales – which are classified as a species of dolphin – but more than half of the islanders (53 percent) are opposed to killing the white-sided dolphin.

Hans Jacob Hermansen, the former chairman of the Faroe Islands’ association behind the annual dolphin killings, defended the practice last week.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Hermansen said the hunt was no different “from killing cattle or anything else,” and that reaction had likely been so strong because the slaughter took place in the public eye.

Former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Petchdam Petchyindee Academy is fired up ahead of his battle against Taiki Naito.

On Friday, 24 September, the two world-class strikers will slug it out in a flyweight Muay Thai bout at ONE: REVOLUTION, which broadcasts live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Petchdam was last seen in the Circle suffering a loss to longtime rival Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon in July of 2020.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for “The Baby Shark,” but instead of looking at it from a negative perspective, he thoroughly believes he has improved on his shortcomings. He wants to become a world champion again.

“I believe I needed more preparation and improvements, especially in the defensive part of my game,” the 23-year-old martial artist shared.

“I’ve learned a lot from that loss to Rodtang, and now I’m prepared to challenge for that belt once again after this fight. Competing in a World Title bout is still my goal.”

Against Naito, Petchdam faces a rough and tough Japanese foe. He’s already sized up Naito and identified his strengths and weaknesses.

“He has got a great speed, and that causes a lot of trouble for his opponents, and his strength when he competes in a kickboxing style is clear for all to see,” the Petchyindee Academy representative said.

“But If I were to look at his skills from a Muay Thai perspective, I don’t think his punches and kicks are as good as mine.”

Petchdam is no stranger to dominating opponents in the Circle, having sent three of his opponents to the canvas since his promotional debut in 2018. He plans to do the same to Naito and work his way back up to a title shot.

“I’m going to win either by knockout or decision, it depends on the situation,” he stated.

“My aim is to fight for the flyweight Muay Thai World Title one day, and hopefully have that title around my waist.”

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index fell by 8.61 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 1,617.04 on Monday morning, witnessing a high of 1,618.58 and a low of 1,614.90 in opening trade.

The SET Index had closed at 1,625.65 on Friday, down 6.05 points or 0.37 per cent. Transactions totalled THB105.67 billion with an index high of 1,635.04 and a low of 1,617.31.

Krungsri Securities forecast the index on Monday would fluctuate between 1,615 and 1,635 points due to lack of positive sentiment.

It said uncertainty over a US corporate tax hike and investors’ move to delay investment to hear the result of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) session on September 21-22 would pressure the index.

“However, mass buy-ups of stocks which gained specific positive sentiment and whose third-quarter profit is expected to rise would help boost the index,” Krungsri Securities said.

It also recommended buying of the following companies’ shares as an investment strategy:

▪︎ HANA, KCE, TU, CPF, GFPT, ASIAN, EPG, NER, SUN and APURE, which benefit from the weakening baht.

▪︎ BANPU, LANNA, CKP, GULF, CHG, BCH and BDMS, whose third-quarter profit is expected to rise.

Baht level linked to signal from Fed, gold trend #SootinClaimon.Com

The baht opened at 33.32 to the US dollar on Monday, weakening from last week’s closing rate of 33.25.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 33.25 and 33.40 during the day and between 33.00 and 33.50 this week, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

Poon said the baht was still pressured by the decision of some investors who had sold their assets as they were worried about the Covid-19 situation in Thailand. They had stopped speculating that the baht would strengthen, and had sold a large number of short-term bonds last week.

Also, the baht might fluctuate according to the gold price in light of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting. A fall in gold price might prompt investors to exchange the dollar for the precious metal, which will pressure the baht to weaken.

Meanwhile, he added that the dollar might be sold if the US Federal Reserve does not send a signal to reduce quantitive easing more than the market expected. The dollar might weaken if the Fed expresses concern about economic recovery as the US economy is slowing down.

Phatthalung police were called to the bloody scene outside an electrical appliance shop in the southern province’s Muang district on Monday morning.

New cigarette tax set to drive up price by 6-8 baht per pack #SootinClaimon.Com

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40006397

A new tax is expected to raise the price of a pack of cigarettes by 6-8 baht from next month.

The Excise Department has proposed the new tobacco tax structure to Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith and expects Cabinet approval in time for the tax to be implemented on October 1, said department director-general Lavaron Sangsnit on Monday.

Since 2017, two tax rates have been imposed on cigarettes: 20 per cent for packs priced Bt60 or less, and 40 per cent for packs over Bt60. Many cigarette companies dropped their price to less than Bt60 to reduce the tax burden.

The department has not yet said whether the new structure will be a single or double rate, only that the tax will be higher.

Lavaron said the new structure aims to solve four tobacco-related problems: Reduce the burden on the public health system, minimise impacts on tobacco farmers, maintain the government revenue, and control illegally imported and counterfeit cigarettes.
