Treatment at home recommended for Covid patients with mild symptoms

Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms can treat themselves at home, but they have to undergo prevention measures while going outdoor, the Department of Medical Services said on Wednesday.

The department acting director-general, Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, said Covid-19 infections and deaths in Thailand have dropped, thanks to a decline in the severity of the disease.

However, he urged vulnerable people, including the elderly and people with underlying diseases, to receive at least four Covid-19 jabs as most Covid-19 deaths were of seniors who were not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated.

He said people should take a rapid antigen test if they develop mild symptoms, such as sore throat and fever. He also recommended patients to stay five days in isolation to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“If patients have to go outdoors, they should undergo Covid-19 prevention measures, including wearing two face masks, washing hands regularly, and keeping a distance from others,” he said.

They should consult a doctor if they develop severe symptoms, such as fever of 39 degrees Celsius, oxygen saturation lower than 94 per cent or have underlying diseases, he added.

He also advised people to wear a face mask and wash hands regularly, depending on their risk of Covid-19 infection.

Thongchai said Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms will receive medicines based on their symptoms and can treat themselves at home.

“If patients develop severe symptoms, they will be treated as inpatient, while physicians will prescribe Remdesivir for them,” he said.

He said physicians would issue medical certification to allow outpatients to take five days leave, adding that inpatients will receive medical certificate depending on treatment duration.

Tanin transistor radios fly off the shelves after PM’s advice to locals in floodhit province

A popular model of the transistor radio has become a best-selling product in Nakhon Ratchasima province after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha suggested that people follow updates on the flood situation via radio.

On Wednesday, a visit to the old radio shop in Muang district showed a lot of retailers had come from other districts to buy “Tanin” transistor radios to sell at their stores.

One retailer had travelled from Kham Thale So district to buy them for sale to low-income farmers because it is cheap.

The 55-year-old owner, Jin Seng, said that the store has sold the “Tanin” transistor radio for 30 years on retail and wholesale basis before selling other brands.

The owner said that he was surprised that a lot of people were coming to buy transistor radios on Tuesday, before he knew about Prayut’s suggestion.

Prayut met with Interior Ministry executives and provincial governors via videoconference about the flood situation on Monday after resuming his duties as prime minister on Monday.

He said that government agencies will face difficulty if the communication system is down so people might have to listen to the broadcast via the transistor radio.

He mentioned the 2011 floods in which the power was out in several areas and people had to get updates via their transistor radio.

The idea went viral after it was shared widely on social media.

Jin Seng said the legendary Tanin transistor radio TF-268 is the most popular model, as it could receive both AM and FM frequency.

Since then, the radio has seen continuous sales and only 10 units were left on Tuesday, as the price per unit is only 290 baht.

He said that buyers usually listen to music and news while farming with convenience as it is light and durable.

He explained that the Tanin transistor radio has been a popular brand for a long time before other brands were in the market, especially Chinese products that invaded the Thai market. Moreover, people could listen to music and news with their phones.

The sales of transistor radios has reduced significantly in recent times, as only farmers in some districts use them.

After this event, Jin said that he would bring more Tanin transistor radios to sell as it is a well-known brand since the time he was a child.

BMA bolsters efforts to tackle flooding with 2 million sandbags amid forecast of heavy rains

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is confident of coping with floods after it prepared 2 million sandbags to fill a hole in embankments.

The BMA held a press conference on Wednesday morning to update on the water situation.

Deputy Bangkok governor Thawida Kamolvej mentioned the recent advice asking office workers to work from home. He said the BMA could not order all of them to work from home but wanted to ask for cooperation to return home early.

He cited a warning from the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) as the reason. The ONWR has said that water flows from the North would push up the water level, while heavy rains are forecast for Bangkok and the Central region on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt ordered officials to report the footage from surveillance cameras before and after the rains and also told the BMA’s Public Relations Office to issue weather alerts at 5am and 3pm.

Jessada Chanprapa, deputy director of the Drainage and Sewerage Department, reported that the drainage level of the Chao Phraya River is at 2,697 cubic metres per second while 3,100 cubic metres per second of water is flowing through the Bang Sai water station. He also revealed that the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is diverting more water to the West.

Meanwhile, four main dams — Bhumibol, Sirikit, Khwae Noi Bamrung Daen, and Pasak Chonlasit — could receive more water. However, the Pasak Chonlasit dam must release more water to Bangkok, as the current water level is at 106 per cent of capacity.

Jessada said that the BMA has prepared sandbags in 76 areas to prevent floods amid rains. It has also created a water diversion plan while installing more water pumps in several spots.

He explained the heavy rains in Bangkok on Monday to the monsoon trough lying in the middle of the city.

However, the weather forecast on Wednesday said that the trough had disappeared due to cold winds, but heavy rains were still likely, especially in southern Bangkok.

Jessada mentioned an incident last year when the water level had risen above the height of the sandbags. He said the office had made stronger and more dense sandbags.

Jessada also expected that the water flow would not be more than 3,500 cubic metres per second, as the RID would divert the water in another direction.

Red-faced Kamphaeng Phet Court officials seek action against case-winning fake lawyer

The Kamphaeng Phet Court has filed a complaint with police against a fake lawyer who represented several clients at the court and had even won some cases brought by public prosecutors.

Justice Ministry spokesman Sorawit Limparangsri said on Wednesday the incident might prompt the Kamphaeng Phet Court to retry several cases fought by the phoney lawyer.

The case of the fake lawyer, who was compared by Thai netizens to the notorious American conman Frank William Abagnale, came to light when Facebook user Prapoj Wongkorkua posted on a Facebook group of volunteer lawyers on Wednesday that a grilled chicken vendor had allegedly disguised himself as a lawyer for years.

In the post, the allegedly fake lawyer was identified as Pornthep Kachenphak, who lives in Kamphaeng Phet’s Muang district.

Prapoj claimed in his post that Pornthep’s name is not in the database of licensed lawyers but he allegedly used the number of a licensed lawyer to work in the court.

Prapoj also claimed the fake lawyer had been representing clients for years and had both won and lost cases. According to Prapoj, the phoney lawyer had won a case brought by a public prosecutor just a few days earlier.

Sorawit said he has just received a report about the fake lawyer and the ministry is in the process of checking how many cases were fought by the particular individual.

The spokesman said it would depend on the top judges of the cases whether they want to order retrials.

The ministry spokesman noted it was unprecedented for a fake lawyer to actually represent clients in court.

He said a representative of the Kamphaeng Phet Court had filed a complaint with police. The allegedly fake lawyer could also be prosecuted for contempt of court.

Sorawit said the Justice Ministry would later coordinate with the Law Society of Thailand to set up an online system with the courts so that the information about lawyers would be updated constantly to prevent similar cases in future.

Sorawit said a meeting between representatives of the Justice Ministry and the Law Society on creation of the system would be held soon.

Meanwhile, the Law Society announced that its investigation found Pornthep was not a licensed lawyer and he had not received training or passed any exam to be a certified lawyer.

The group said Law Society president Wichian Chupthaison had authorised Chaiwat Boonkua, registrar of the professional council, to file a complaint with police against Pornthep for violating the Lawyers Act BE 2528 (1985).

Roads motorists should avoid in Bangkok’s Bang Rak district today

Motorists have been advised to avoid using routes near Maha Uma Devi Temple or “Wat Khaek” in Bangkok’s Bang Rak district on Wednesday, as a parade of Hindu deities will be held there.

The parade is a highlight of the Navaratri festival to mark the victory of Hindu goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to help restore dharma.

The celebration at Maha Uma Devi Temple began on September 25 and ends on October 7 this year.

Bang Rak District Office has advised motorists to avoid the following routes:

• Pan Road from 6pm to 2am
• Silom Road (inbound) from 6pm to 2am
• Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Road (inbound) from 10pm to 2am

Micheline starred chef Chumpol Jangprai will work his magic in the kitchen as he cooks an elaborate, scrumptious dinner for VIP and VVIP guests at the opening gala of the Apec Summit scheduled for November 18 and 19.

The famous Thai chef from R.Haan fine dining restaurant said on Wednesday that he had planned a menu that represents Thailand’s uniqueness and charm in a balanced way through the use of local specialty ingredients and Thai herbs.

“The theme of the menu complements the overarching thought of Apec Summit 2022: the implementation of the bio-circular-green [BCG] economy model,” said Chumpol.

“I have selected organic vegetables grown by community enterprises across Thailand. As for meat, I will mainly use the famous Betong chicken, which was selectively bred from China’s Guangxi chicken by Yala’s farmers.”

Other meat dishes include seven-colour lobsters from Phuket, duck eggs from Suphan Buri, river prawns from Ayutthaya, organic chicken from Nakhon Pathom, sundried threadfin fish from Pattani, and beef from Sakon Nakhon.

The meals will come complete with steamed jasmine rice from Thung Kula Ronghai and coffee from Nan.

The dining tables will be decorated with handicrafts from the Support Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand.

Chumpol added that he intended to demonstrate Thailand’s strength in food security. Regardless of the crisis, he said, Thailand is fortunate to be free from any food shortages.

Chumpol was previously selected as the main chef in charge of the Apec Summit gala twice – in 1992 and 2003, when Thailand was the host.

Chiang Mai floods start to ease, 62 more water pumps to be installed to speed up draining

The flooding situation in Chiang Mai improved on Wednesday with more than half of the floodwaters drained and 62 more pumps being installed to speed up the water outflow.

With half of the 3.02 million cubic metres of floodwater drained from downtown Chiang Mai, provincial officials have started going out to help local residents clean up their houses in the sections that are dry.

The Irrigation Office 1 said on Wednesday that at 2pm on Tuesday, there were 3.02 million cubic metres of floodwaters in the Muang Chiang Mai municipality area, but at 9am on Wednesday about 1.51 million cubic metres of water still needed to be drained.

The office reported that the water level of the Ping River at P1 water station under the Nawarat Bridge was measured at 3.57 metres, 0.13 metres lower than the crisis level while the water was flowing through the station at the rate of 469.50 cubic metre per second.

At 7pm on Monday, the water was measured at the station at 4.65 metres and flowing at 754.25 cubic metres per second, so the flood situation was clearly improving, the office said.

Chiang Mai Governor Nirat Pongsitthithavorn said on Wednesday that the provincial administration had sought help from other agencies, including the Chiang Mai Irrigation Office, the Muang district municipality, the Local Administration Department, and the Chiang Mai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office to find more water pumps to drain the remaining floodwater.

Nirat said 62 more water pumps have been taken on loan, including three large ones with 14-inch-diameter pipe, and the municipality had been assigned to install and operate the pumps.

He said two severely hit communities, the Viang Thong village and Pa Prao Nok, would receive priority for water draining.

At 9.25am on Wednesday, the governor issued a circular to his deputies and heads of all local government offices, telling them to go out and help clean up roads and houses where the water has receded.

The circular said water in Ping River was lower than the crisis level, but a lot of mud had been deposited on roads and in people’s houses hence the officials must go out to make Chiang Mai beautiful again as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Aroon Pinta, Chiang Mai chief disaster prevention and mitigation officer, said that six large pumps from Lampang province would arrive on Wednesday afternoon and would be installed immediately.

Officials were seen late Wednesday morning helping local residents clean up their houses and roads, while officials from Muang Chiang Mai Municipality and some hospitals were seen distributing rice and medicine to local residents.

IEAT told to keep close watch on flood situation at Ayutthaya industrial estates

The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) has been instructed to closely monitor the flood situation at three industrial estates in Ayutthaya, Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said on Wednesday.

This came after Chao Phraya and Rama VI dam officials said they would increase water drainage to cope with flooding in nearby areas.

Suriya pointed out that the move by both dams would put the three industrial estates of Nakhon Luang, Bang Pa-In and Ban Wa at risk of flooding.

“The IEAT has been instructed to closely monitor the flood situation at the three estates,” he said.

Suriya added that the IEAT has also been instructed to prepare emergency measures to lessen the impact of flooding on the industrial sector.

Meanwhile, IEAT governor Weris Amrapal said the authority had raised the flood alert level after both dams announced they would increase water drainage.

He said the three industrial estates are following the situation closely, adding that they have set up flood barriers and prepared water pumps to tackle any flooding.

“The three estates have the potential to deal with the flood crisis,” he said, adding that the IEAT’s move to raise its flood alert level is aimed at preparing for an emergency that could occur any time.

The three estates have also been instructed to check the durability of flood barriers and follow news related to flooding so they are not caught by surprise.

“The IEAT is confident these measures will enable it to handle the flood situation to mitigate the impact on businesses and residents,” he added.

100 elephants in Ayutthaya camp may be evacuated as Lopburi River overflows

Officials are making preparations to evacuate some 100 elephants at the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace & Royal Kraal after the Lopburi River overflowed.

As of Wednesday morning, the river rose by 30 centimetres, bursting its banks and flooding houses in tambons Koh and Suan Prik in Ayutthaya’s Muang district.

The elephant camp in Suan Prik was also affected.

Workers, volunteers and troops from the 11th Cavalry Battalion of the 4th Cavalry Regiment were racing against time to build flood levees to protect the elephant camp.

But Riangthongbat Meephan, deputy director of the camp, said the elephants might have to be moved to another tambon if the rising water overflows the levees.

He said officials would try to move the elephants to higher ground away from the river bank first. They would be evacuated to another tambon only if necessary.

Floods have already inundated fields that were used to grow grass to feed the elephants, so the camp would soon experience a food shortage, he believed.

Anupong upbeat govt can manage floodwaters, doesn’t expect 2011 crisis

Interior Minister General Anupong Paochinda expressed confidence on Wednesday that the government would be able to handle the flood situation and the flooding would not be as severe as in 2011.

Speaking to reporters before attending a weekly Cabinet meeting, Anupong sought to allay public fear that the flood situation this year would be as serious as in 2011, when Bangkok and suburban areas were inundated by massive floodwaters from upstream provinces.

Anupong said floodwaters from upstream were expected to reach Ubon Ratchathani by Saturday, but the water level in the Mekong River was still lower than its banks.

He said the government would try to speed up floodwater drainage to minimise the impact on Ubon Ratchathani.

The current levels of discharge from Chainat Dam and Chao Phraya Dam plus water from the Pasak River would not cause flooding in Bangkok if there are no more rains, he insisted.

Fear of severe flooding arose after several provinces in the North and Northeast, including Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Phetchabun and Ubon Ratchathani, suffered from floods caused by heavy rains unleashed by storm Noru and a monsoon ridge.

While the waters were moving south to Bangkok, the capital has been battered by heavy rain for several consecutive days, causing brief flooding on major roads.

Public apprehension over serious flooding was heightened after a warning by the Royal Thai Navy’s Hydrographic Department that sea tides would rise from today, Wednesday, to Thursday next week while heavy rains would continue to batter the country because of a monsoon ridge and influence of a monsoon wind.

The Meteorological Department has predicted that rainfall in the upper parts of the North and Northeast would ease by Sunday, but the Central region, the East, the South and Bangkok would continue to experience heavy showers.

When asked whether the situation would be as bad as in 2011, Anupong said it would not be that severe on condition that the country is not hit by more tropical storms and there is no new monsoon ridge across Thailand.

“In 2011, there were three tropical storms and three consecutive monsoon ridges passing across the country, resulting in heavy rains and causing the government to be unable to drain waters in time,” Anupong said.

“But this year, it will be severe only in areas where water flows through. If there are no more monsoons or monsoon ridges, we can handle the situation.”

He said all government agencies concerned plan to provide remedies to help people affected by flooding.

The government would try to miminise the impact from the draining of floodwaters, but the government needs support from the people downstream to let the water flow through their areas and into the sea, Anupong made it clear.
