Nutraceutical trade fair gets underway, aiming to give THB70-bn market a shot in the arm

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 05, 2022

Informa Markets Thailand introduces Vitafoods Asia, the latest trade show in Thailand that covers the entire supply chain of nutraceutical products, an industry worth around 70 billion baht in domestic market value alone.

The exhibition, which response to health food trends, comes amid confidence placed in Thailand’s potential as a one-stop medical hub.

Moreover, it supports the MICE industry, which is returning to pre-Covid levels after Thailand eased health restrictions and recently reopened to the world.

Euromonitor estimated that in 2021 the vitamin and nutraceutical market in Thailand was worth around 74 billion baht with a stable growth trend. Moreover, Thailand’s economic policies focus more on building an economy of High Value Added Products (HVA), resulting in economic, social, and environmental sustainability; rather than traditional manufacturing processes that focus on the number of products.

These factors offer Informa Markets an opportunity to expand the show, filling the industry’s gap that affects the lifestyle and health of people nowadays.

Rungphet Chitanuwat, Business Director-ASEAN, Informa Markets Thailand, says, “Informa Markets’ portfolio of health exhibitions in Thailand comprises ASEAN Beauty, Food Ingredients Asia, and CPHI Asia. All are regional events. With our continued and long experience, we decided to introduce Vitafoods Asia in 2022, which will complete our portfolio of health trade events. This event focuses on the nutraceutical industry, which is quite competitive in Thailand. We estimate that export production will soon become a key focus among Thai businesses. So, discovering new trends and innovations in manufacturing beyond what they see in Thailand is what they are doing to create competitive advantages at regional and global levels.”

Vitafoods is a brand that emphasizes driving the nutraceutical industry. It has successful records of organizing events and creating platforms; which help connect businesses and supporting agencies.

Besides, it enhances understanding of every aspect of the industry, resulting in trading, exchange of information, and ultimately expansions of the industry in many countries and regions.

Over the past years, Vitafoods events have received great responses, from Vitafoods Europe, Vitafoods India, Vitafoods Insights, Vitafoods Insights Europe Virtual Expo, and Vitafoods Insights Asia Virtual Expo, to Vitafoods Asia, which is happening as an on-ground event in Thailand.

The strategy for the first Vitafoods Asia in Thailand is a co-location with Fi Asia or Food Ingredients Asia, as they have many things in common, especially ingredients for food and beverage productions.

Recently, more ingredients with health benefits have been developed into functional drinks or foods. These ingredients can also be used in nutraceutical production. Introducing innovative ingredients, many producers also use them to manufacture food or nutraceutical food products, depending on how they are sold to consumers and what expectations consumers have.

Vitafoods Asia 2022 is a leading venue for nutraceutical and functional food and beverage, and dietary supplement industries in Asia, covering the entire supply chain and bringing together manufacturers, distributors of dietary supplement and nutraceutical products, innovations, and technologies.

The online platform of the event starts from 26 September to 10 October 2022, while the actual on-ground event takes place during 5-7 October 2022 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

It offers opportunities for visitors and exhibitors to meet and talk online through online meetings or schedule their appointment in Bangkok even before joining the actual event in person.

With this available, they can build connections in advance and better their experiences when they meet in person while optimizing their time at the event.

As Vitafoods Asia is co-located with Fi Asia 2022 for the first time, the two trade shows will welcome more than 21,000 visitors and distributors in the nutraceutical industry.

The exhibitions feature over 600 nutraceuticals, and food and beverage industries, covering four components of the entire supply chain, including Ingredients & Raw, Finished Products, Contract Manufacturing & Private label, and Services & Equipment.

The Nonthaburi Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation urged provincial government agencies to help residents as more floods hit the province today.

In an announcement, the office said Nonthaburi would be at high risk of flooding as the Meteorological Department and the Hydro-Informatics Institute expected more rainwater to flow into the Chao Phraya River, lifting water levels.

THE NATION

Bangkokians have been asked to work from home, or at least leave work early, from Wednesday to Friday to escape more flooding in the city caused by heavy rain and rising tide.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) deputy governor Tavida Kamolvej said on Tuesday the Chao Phraya River could overflow from Wednesday due to rising tide coupled with upstream runoffs and heavy rains influenced by the southwest monsoon.

She said the BMA is trying to manage the Chao Phraya level to prepare for additional water in the next couple of days. However, if the excessive water cannot be “pushed” into the Gulf in time, the river could overflow and flood riverside communities.

“We would therefore like to ask government agencies and private companies to allow their staff to work from home from October 5 to 7, or at least let them leave work early during this period,” she said.

The move is expected to help reduce traffic congestion and spare most people from getting stranded due to heavy rain and floods.

The BMA has been sending teams to survey river dams and flood levees every day so that communities in flood prone areas are alerted in time if the water reaches a critical level, Tavida added.

The Thailand Meteorological Department earlier forecast that high tide is expected in the Chao Phraya River from today, Wednesday, to Thursday next week (October 13).

It warned that increased water discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam and heavy rains influenced by the southwest monsoon would cause the river to rise by 1.7 to 2 metres above median sea level.

More than 3.28 million rai across 25 provinces in the North, the Northeast, the Central region and the East have been affected by floods, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said on Tuesday.

GISTDA reported the flood situation after studying information from the Sentinel-1 satellite.

Of the 3,289,514 rai affected by floods, precisely 526,577 rai are rice fields, the agency said.

It estimated floods have affected at least 758,000 people, damaged some 3,700 houses, and overwhelmed 1,463 kilometres of roads.

Rising tides may force Chao Phraya to overflow, BMA warns

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2022

THE NATION

Bangkok’s riverside communities have been warned of the possibility of the Chao Phraya River overflowing this week due to rising tide coupled with runoffs and heavy rain.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) issued the warning on Tuesday, saying higher sea tides may make the river overflow from Wednesday to next Thursday. The warning posted on the BMA Facebook page also said that runoffs from upstream areas and heavy rains influenced by the southwest monsoon would also raise the river’s level.

The Chao Phraya may rise by 1.7 to 2 metres above median sea level, BMA said.

The BMA warning matched similar advisories from the Office of Natural Water Resources (ONWR) and the Navy’s Hydrographic Department.

The ONWR warned people living along the Chao Phraya and Pa Sak rivers to watch out for overflows because the Chao Phraya and Pa Sak Chonsalit dams have increased their water discharge to accommodate continuous heavy rain.

Rising tides may force Chao Phraya to overflow, BMA warnsOn Monday, the Hydrographic Department predicted rising tides from 6am to 7pm from Wednesday to next Thursday, which it said would affect the level of the Chao Phraya River.

The department said rising sea tide will increase the level of the river near the Julachomklao Fort and nearby areas by as much as 2m above sea level.

THE NATION

The Royal Irrigation Department has installed more than 220 large water pumps to drain floodwater from Bangkok and surrounding provinces, Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Chalermchai Sreeon said on Tuesday.

Chalermchai said the pumps were installed at pumping station and water gates to drain floodwater into the Chao Phraya River on the western side of Bangkok, to the Nakhon Nayok and Bang Pakong rivers on the eastern side and into the Gulf of Thailand on the south.

The minister said the pumps were draining water at 45 million cubic metres per day, or about 525 cubic metres per second.

Chalermchai added that the department has been ordered to install more large water pumps to try to minimise impact from flooding in Bangkok and suburban areas.

Counting from July 11 this year, the Royal Irrigation Department has drained about 2 billion cubic metres of water, or about two and a half times the capacity of the Pasak Dam, into the sea with the installed pumps ahead of the rainy season, Chalermchai said. The operation to speed up water flows into the sea would continue with no time frame, he added.

Walk-in renewal service for driver’s licence resumes at DLT office

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 04, 2022

THE NATION

People can now renew their expired driver’s licence without having to pre-register online, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) announced on Tuesday.

The department said the licence renewal service will be available for walk-in candidates at all branches of DLT nationwide. The online pre-registration requirement, which had been implemented to prevent crowding at DLC offices during the Covid-19 pandemic, has been scrapped due to the improving situation as seen in a significant decline in confirmed cases as well as the severity of the infection.

Besides renewal of licence for personal vehicle, other walk-in services available at DLT offices include:

— Changing licence type from two years to five years (for licence that expired less than one year ago)

— Applying for international driving licence

— Applying for licence replacement in case of loss, damage or change of details

— Applying for driving certificate in Thai or English

— Applying for or renewal of public vehicle licence

To renew a licence, the candidate must first pass the e-learning course provided via the website www.dlt-elearning.com.

The department advised walk-in candidates to bring along these documents: ID card, current driver’s licence, certificate of online class graduation, and medical certificate.

The DLT added that it would prioritise candidates who pre-register via the DLT Smart Queue mobile application.

Walk-in candidates who do not receive the service before the office closes on that day, will be issued a queue card for another day.

Local residents were safely evacuated from a vehicle LPG station in Muang district of Surin province on Tuesday morning after a gas pipe leakage caused an explosion scare.

Rescue officials took over two hours to shut off the valve of the LPG storage tank at the station, stopping the leakage at a pipe leading to a gas dispenser.

Officials said the gas pipe leak at the station on the Surin-Lam Chi Road in Ban Takhian village in Tambon Khor Kho was caused by a subsiding concrete floor that collapsed onto the pipe.

Officials said that section of the road was under water and the concrete floor of the gas station collapsed because of the weight of the flood water, causing the pipe to leak.

While rescue workers tried to shut off the valve, police cordoned off the station. Local residents were moved to at least 500 metres away for fear of a gas explosion.
