The government has signed a contract to buy 30 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer to be delivered from the first quarter of 2022 onward, said Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Thursday.

The contract signing ceremony was held earlier this week between Department of Disease Control (DDC) director-general Dr Opas Karnkawinpong and Deborah Seifert, country manager of Pfizer Thailand and Indochina.

Anutin added that Pfizer has offered a special condition to the government, in which Thailand can buy additional 20 million doses of vaccine with no deposit required.

“We planned to use the 30 million doses as booster shots to increase the immunity of those who have been fully vaccinated earlier,” said Anutin. “Thailand will have enough vaccine in stock for 2022, as we have already purchased 60 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and will have about 20 million doses of domestically manufactured protein subunit vaccine once it is approved by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA).”

“Next year, Thailand will have all kinds of Covid-19 vaccines available,” he added. “We are also planning to register Pfizer vaccine with the FDA for use in children aged 5-11 years, which are estimated at around 5 million children nationwide.”

The Chonburi Provincial Public Health Office took to Facebook on Thursday to warn people who attended the Pattaya Music Festival 2021 to take a Covid-19 ATK test.

The post also warned that those who visited places outside the festival area and did not wear masks or consumed alcoholic beverages in a group were at risk and should immediately take Covid-19 tests.

The music fest was held at Jomtien Beach in Bang Lamung district on November 12 and 13.

The festival did employ strict Covid-19 prevention measures including temperature checks and making sure visitors wore masks as well as kept a safe distance from one another. Tourists also had to present proof that they were vaccinated or had taken an ATK test not more than 72 hours before entry.

However, tourists visiting places outside the festival area were not screened. They were seen to drink together and many did not wear masks, reportedly leading to new infections.

PM ignores questions on why Thailand didn’t get invite to democracy summit #SootinClaimon.Com

The prime minister ignored reporters on Thursday after they asked him why the US State Department did not invite Thailand to the Summit for Democracy in December.

On Wednesday, the State Department announced a list of 110 countries that would participate in the first online Summit for Democracy on December 9 and 10. Thailand did not appear on the invitation list.

China and Russia, too, were not invited.

Only three Asean countries will attend the summit – Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

When reporters asked Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha about the matter on Thursday, the premier just gave them a grim look before walking into Government House.

The US-hosted summit is aimed at helping to halt the decline of democracy and the collapse of rights and freedoms around the world.

Suphan Buri shrimp farmers hit govt agencies with 210 lawsuits over flooding #SootinClaimon.Com

Faced with unceasing trouble even after two months of flooding, angry Suphan Buri shrimp farmers slapped government agencies with as many as 210 lawsuits on Thursday for their water “mismanagement”. They are demanding compensation to the tune of THB142 million for damages incurred.

The shrimp farmers in Bang Pla Ma and Song Phi Nong districts, Suphan Buri province gathered at the Administrative Court to sue the Royal Irrigation Department and the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives for the mismanagement of water, which has caused high flooding since the end of September.

The giant freshwater prawn farmers in the province are said to suffer “100 per cent” from the flood damage, while more than 2,000 residents are intending to file additional lawsuits.

Manit Puttachanya, a shrimp farmer in Bang Pla Ma district, told the reporters on Thursday that the government intended to divert the water into the areas to avoid flooding in industrial and community sections.

“The farmers in the districts have been suffered from the fall of shrimp prices for more than three years since the beginning of the pandemic. We thought the price would become higher during the upcoming New Year festival as the Covid-19 situation eases, but now our farms are covered with floods,” Manit said.

Manit said that he did not want to file the lawsuit and his intention was to call on the related government agencies to fully pay the compensation for the actual damage amount. He said the government compensation of 11,780 baht per rai for not more than five rai for each farmer did not help, as one shrimp farmer would own at least 10-20 rai.

“The average investment per pond is 50,000 baht and the farmers are currently facing debt problems. There are only expenses to pay for the loan of investing in the shrimp farm. We know that the government does not have the ability to help much. But we do hope that this litigation will at least alleviate the problem,” Manit added.
