Four new Covid-19 cases were found in Chiang Mai and three of them had visited entertainment venues in Bangkok, officials said.

On Monday, the communicable disease committee in Chiang Mai announced the four cases, as well as preventive measures to cope with Covid-19 in the province.

The first person had visited an entertainment venue in Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek area on March 30, before returning to Chiang Mai on March 31. The man took Thai Vietjet Air – flight VZ2104 – at 5.30pm. He was found infected on April 4.

The second man is a friend of the first patient, and also had visited an entertainment venue in Bangkok’s Ratchadaphisek. This man returned to Chiang Mai with three other friends in a personal car. He was found infected on April 4.

The third patient had travelled in the same car with the second man. He lived with his girlfriend, after returning from Bangkok. He was found infected on April 5.

The communicable disease committee added that two other friends in the group of these three, who had also visited the entertainment venues in Bangkok, had not contracted Covid-19.

The last new case in Chiang Mai was a Chinese national, who had visited Nonthaburi province for seven days. This man flew to Chiang Mai from Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok on April 1, by Thai AirAsia flight FD4116 at 6.20pm.

He lived with his wife and had visited a BBQ restaurant in Chiang Mai’s Chang Phueak subdistrict on April 1.

On April 2, he had lunch at a restaurant located near Chiang Mai Airport, and dinner at Thip Net Market.

On April 3, he visited Central Festival Chiang Mai, Thip Net Market and Kadmanee Market.

On April 4, he had a meal at a restaurant, located near Chiang Mai Airport, and visited a private hospital for Covid-19 testing.

On April 5, he was confirmed as infected.

The committee said that the virus had not spread in Chiang Mai this time. However, entertainment venues and restaurants where liquor was served have been ordered to close before 11pm from April 6 to 30.

Bangkok Governor Asawin Kwanmuang on Monday announced the closure of all entertainment venues in three Bangkok areas – Khlong Toei, Wattana and Bang Khae – due to the new Covid-19 cluster.

The cluster was found recently among visitors to entertainment venues in Bangkok, especially in the Thong Lor area.

In order to contain the fallout, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration decided to close all pubs and bars in Khlong Toei and Wattana districts, where Thong Lor is located, from April 6 to 19.

Meanwhile, closure of entertainment venues in hotspot Bang Khae district has been extended as well since several cases were detected in this area.

However in Huay Kwang, Phra Nakhon, Phasicharoen and Lat Phrao districts, only entertainment venues where cases of infection were found were ordered to be shut.

Prayut says he doesn’t know if ministers went partying in Bangkok’s Thong Lor area

NationalApr 05. 2021

The premier denied any knowledge of members of his Cabinet visiting entertainment venues in Bangkok’s Thong Lor area recently, which was found to be a hotspot of Covid-19 infections last week.

PM Prayut Chan-o-cha added that relevant agencies were looking into whether the venues in question should be closed temporarily to curb the spread of the virus.

Until Saturday, 71 cases were found linked to entertainment venues, 40 of whom were found to have visited pubs in the Thong Lor and Ekkamai areas.

On Monday, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reported 194 new infections, including 87 cases in and around the capital, 12 of whom had tested positive in quarantine facilities.

Of Monday’s total infections, 69 were linked to entertainment venues – 45 in Bangkok, nine in Samut Prakan, seven in Chonburi, two each in Nonthaburi and Chumphon, and one each in Samut Sakhon, Samut Songkhram, Sa Kaew and Pathum Thani.

On Sunday, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said in a Facebook post that preventive measures on Covid-19 will be reviewed due to the new cluster in entertainment venues.

He added that people out to party easily spread the virus because they went pub hopping without practising preventive measures.

6,000 jabs deployed to tackle Thong Lor cluster

Health authorities will use 6,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to tackle the cluster-infection linked with nightspots in Thong Lor district, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said on Monday.

The doses would come from the second batch of 100,000 jabs recently delivered to Thailand, said BMA spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang following an urgent meeting at Bangkok City Hall.

Of the 100,000 jabs, 66,000 will be administered to people who have already received their first dose, and 24,000 to medical personnel. The remaining 10,000 doses will be split to tackle Bangkok’s Bang Khae cluster (4,000 doses) and the Thong Lor cluster (6,000).

“The BMA is now considering where to set up Covid-19 vaccination points,” said the spokesman.

He added that the BMA is also considering whether entertainment venues should be closed during the upcoming Songkran festival.

Companies fire staff for online hate messages over deadly fire at royalist’s house

Two companies – Muang Thai Insurance and patRangsit Hospital – have fired employees for showing satisfaction over a fire that killed five people in Bangkok on Saturday.

Four voluntary rescue workers battling a blaze at a three-storey house in Krisda Nakhon 31 Village on Boromratchonnanee Road of Thawi Watthana district lost their lives when the building collapsed.

The owner of the house, Kiat Patterson, 35, was an outspoken royalist. Police are investigating whether the fire was caused by arson.

News of the fire triggered online messages of satisfaction from social media users on the other side of the political divide. Some posted that it was a waste of time to take part in the rescue efforts.

Among those allegedly posting negative comments were staff of Muang Thai Insurance and patRangsit Hospital. The two companies responded on Monday by announcing they had fired staff who had presented “unsuitable opinions” online.

March inflation figures show steady recovery of Thai economy

NationalApr 05. 2021

By THE NATION

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) dropped 0.08 per cent year-on-year in March, its lowest contraction in 13 months and a marked improvement from the 1.17 per cent drop in February, the Commerce Ministry reported on Monday.

The CPI measures headline inflation based on the prices of a basket of consumer goods and services.

The improvement stemmed mainly from the rising price of energy, pork, and cooking oil.

However, the price of other items, including raw food and housing, dropped further to drive a slight reduction in headline inflation of 0.08 per cent last month.

Discounting food and energy (core inflation), the CPI in March rose 0.09 per cent (YoY).

In the first quarter of 2021, headline inflation fell 0.53 per cent (YoY) and core inflation rose 0.12 per cent.

The slight contraction of CPI came with signs of gradual economic recovery both on the demand and supply sides, the ministry said.

The demand side has seen improvement in farmers’ income, agricultural prices, private consumption index, sales of commercial vehicles and motorcycles, and real estate transactions.

On the supply side, the Manufacturing Production Index (MPI), Capacity Utilisation (Cap-U), and the Producer Price Index (PPI) are on upward trends.

The Commerce Ministry has adjusted its forecast for headline inflation in 2021 to 0.7 to 1.7 per cent (1.2 per cent on average).

Price of raw sugar raised in bid to turn sugarcane into cash crop

The Thai Sugar Millers Corp (TSMC) has set the price for 10 CCS (commercial cane sugar) at Bt1,000 per tonne in a bid to encourage farmers to grow more sugarcane.

“TSMC will also provide the know-how to new farmers who want to switch to sugarcane,” the corp’s PR chief Siriwut Siembhakdi said.

The yield of refined sugar from one tonne of sugarcane this year stood at 113.57 kilograms versus 110.46kg per tonne last year.

There are currently 57 factories that process sugar nationwide.

“The average sweetness level of sugar this year was 12.68 CCS,” he said.

Despite the increase in per tonne yield, the total output of sugarcane this season dropped to 66.66 million tonnes from the last season’s 74.86 million tonnes due to drought in many regions of Thailand.

“Pollution during this season’s harvest was not bad because many farmers were observing the ban on setting fire to fields to harvest sugarcane,” he said. “This year, only 17.61 tonnes of sugarcane were harvested by setting fields on fire compared to the last season, when 37.18 million tonnes were harvested by burning.”

Sirwut added TSMC is confident that offering Bt1,000 for every tonne of 10 CCS sugar will encourage more farmers to grow sugarcane and ensure stability in Thailand’s sugar industry.

Provincial governor Wichawut Jinto said villagers carried the crocodile to Ban Khlong Rang School in a fishing net, adding that this croc had last been seen in the Khlong Leelet canal early last month.

“Capturing the crocodile has been tough because the canal has many turnoffs and is near the estuary,” he said.

Thanking the villagers for their bravery and ensuring children’s safety, he said government officials will move the crocodile to a safe place.
