Ministry to crack down on fraud under subsidy scheme

NationalMar 27. 2021

By THE NATION

Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin said on Friday that he had ordered the Social Security Office to pursue legal action against individuals who might have violated the conditions of the government’s latest subsidy scheme by offering cash without exchange of goods or service.

The scheme offers Bt4,000 via the Pao Tang application to Thai nationals under Section 33 of the Social Security Act who do not hold a state welfare card, have not joined the “Rao Chana” (We Win) scheme and have less than Bt500,000 in savings. The money can be spent at participating merchant stores until May 31, in a bid to boost the country’s pandemic-hit economy.

On Friday, Social Security Office secretary-general Thossaphol Kritwongwiman said that he had filed complaints of possible fraud with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau and had urged police to investigate the suspects who had opened web pages on social media as well as mobile applications inviting people to trade in their Rao Rak Kan money for cash.

“Our preliminary investigation revealed that these pages offered cash for Rao Rak Kan money but there is no evidence of products or services being offered, which violated the terms of the campaign,” he added.

So far 5,720,967 people have been approved to receive the handout, or 77 per cent of total people who are qualified, while the ministry estimated the scheme would help inject more than Bt11.4 billion into the economy.

Thoosaphol warned registrants and merchants under the campaign not to believe these web pages or mobile applications that promise to give them cash, as they could be disqualified from the campaign and might face fraud charges.

Under the modus operandi, the suspects invite people to spend their Rao Rak Kan digital money through the Pao Tang application at their store, where, instead of a product or service, they are offered cash minus the margin for the “merchant”.

Chiang Mai authorities buying dead leaves to prevent forest fires

NationalMar 27. 2021

By THE NATION

Chiang Mai authorities are buying dried leaves from villagers in a measure to tackle forest fires and pollution caused by locals burning dead vegetation in the province.

Chiang Mai city has topped the world air pollution rankings this month as burning fields and forests shroud the province in toxic haze.

In response, the local Natural Resources and Environment office has launched a scheme in 34 villages allowing residents to sell leaves and agricultural waste from forests and farms.

The scheme, which kicked off on March 15, had collected 16.69 tonnes of dead leaves as of Wednesday and is targeting a total of around 50 million tonnes.

The annual burning season stirs up toxic PM2.5 haze across northern provinces every year, bringing a spike in respiratory problems for local residents.

Some of the forest fires occur naturally but many are set by hunters to smoke out wildlife.

Bangkok Governor Pol General Aswin Kwanmuang along with executives of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Friday embarked on a boat trip from Thonburi district towards the Bay of Bangkok in Bang Khun Thian district to survey routes that could be developed for tourism once the pandemic situation improves.

The boat departed from Yod Phiman Pier in Phranakhon district at 9.30am and cruised along the Chao Phraya River into the Bangkok Yai Canal before they got off at Talad Plu Pier.

The afternoon trip saw the BMA executives depart from Talad Plu Pier and enter Sanam Chai and Chaloem Chai Phattana canals, Baworn Prachanun Park and Phitthaya Longkorn canal and disembark at 5.30pm at Rak Thale Bang Khun Thian Bridge, which is where the canal flows into the upper Gulf of Thailand in the area known as Bay of Bangkok.

During Friday’s trip, Aswin also met over 100 representatives from communities along the canals in Thonburi district to discuss tourism and other related business opportunities.

“We believe that in the next 1-2 months, the outbreak situation will be much better and tourists will start pouring in,” he said. “This is a good opportunity for people residing along the canals to improve their neighbourhood and gain additional income from tourism-related businesses.”

Aswin added that the BMA is considering deploying electric boats in canals of Thonburi district to help improve the quality of public transport as well as reduce noise and air pollution.

An idea of how much a night at the pub can cost you – in calories

NationalMar 27. 2021

By THE NATION

It is the end of the week and time to party again. But do you know how many calories you put away with each drink you consume?

Here’s a short list to give you an idea:
Beer (330ml): 140-160 calories
Liquor shot (45ml): 90-100 calories
Wine (147ml): 100-110 calories
Alcopops (275ml): 250-300 calories.

So, how much alcohol is safe to consume?
According to http://www.drinkaware.co.uk, men can consume up to four units of alcohol a day, while women can drink up to three units daily.

And how do units add up?
Beer (330-440ml): 3 units
Wine (125-150ml): 1.5 units
Alcopop (275ml): 1.5 units
Shot of 40% proof liquor (25ml): 1 unit
Bottle of 40% proof liquor (750ml): 30 units.

Here is how one 330ml bottle of beer packing 140 calories stands against other drinks:
Can of carbonated soft drink: 140 calories
Glass of bubble milk tea: 200-400 calories
Bottle of honey-flavoured green tea: 220 calories

Drink responsibly
Though alcoholic beverages are packed with calories, they are not the only reason for obesity. Empty calories can also come from other sources.
This article has been written to give readers an idea about calories, not to promote drinking.

Bangkok administration educates staff working with migrant labourers on containing Covid-19

NationalMar 27. 2021

By THE NATION

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Friday organised a training course for 300 health volunteers and superintendents of dormitories of migrant labourers in Inmanoradee Temple in Phasi Charoen district.

The temple had been used as a location for a mobile vaccination unit for people in nearby communities after new Covid-19 cluster cases were found in five Bang Khae district markets earlier this month.

The vaccine drive ran from March 17 to 22 with 6,842 people being inoculated.

Chawin Sirinak, BMA’s deputy permanent secretary, said that migrant labourers usually live in crowded spaces and lacked basic knowledge of health and sanitation, putting them at risk of contracting the virus.

“The training course aims to educate our staff to pass on the knowledge of health, sanitation and how to stay safe from Covid-19 to migrant labourers,” he added. “We also train dormitory superintendents on how to clean up and disinfect living quarters properly to curb the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases.”

Chiang Mai zoo comes up with creative ways to keep big cats cool

NationalMar 27. 2021

By The Nation

Officials at Chiang Mai’s Tiger Kingdom have devised many ingenious ways to ensure the tigers remain hydrated and cool in the searing summer heat.

The temperature at noon can sometimes hit 40 degrees Celsius, so zoo officials have been serving a snack of ice cream to the two-year-old male Bengal tigers Strong and Satang. They also shake long sticks with coconut or palm leaves at the tip to lure the tigers into the pond.

Meanwhile, tiger cubs Nguen, Nak and Thong are being kept under air-conditioning, while Nummon and Namo – the zoo’s superstar cheetahs – love being wiped down with a wet cloth.

These cheetahs are famous for their friendliness.

Orapin Shinawatra, general manager of the zoo in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district, said veterinarians and zoo officials keep a watchful eye on the tigers to ensure they are not stressed or have heatstroke.

“If the weather is hot, the tigers will lie down to save their energy,” she added.

Longer Thai quarantine for travellers from 10 African countries

NationalMar 26. 2021

By The Nation

Thai health authorities on Friday issued a list of 10 countries exempted from the new 10-day quarantine measure for foreign arrivals.

Department of Disease Control chief Opas Karnkawinpong said travellers from African countries where a highly infectious Covid-19 variant is prevalent would still have to undergo the full 14-day quarantine in Thailand.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration has approved the launch of 10-day quarantine from April 1, as Thailand eases travel restrictions in response to the vaccination rollout worldwide.

However, concern that vaccines may be less effective against the South African variant of the virus has prompted tighter Thai quarantine restrictions for 10 African countries.

Travellers from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia, Kenya, Rwanda, Cameroon, DR Congo, and Ghana will have to spend the full 14 days in Thai quarantine.

The South African strain has been found in Thai returnees from Tanzania and Mozambique.

The full list of countries exempted from the 10-day quarantine measure will be released on the DDC website from April 1 with updates every two weeks.

Nam Dok Mai mango ‘avalanche’ triggers gold rush in Phitsanulok

NationalMar 26. 2021

By The Nation

Phitsanulok’s annual mango harvest has sparked a gold rush in the lower North province, as prices plummet due to oversupply. With international travel and exports blocked by Covid-19, Phitsanulok farmers are desperate to find customers for growing mountains of their world-renowned Nam Dok Mai mangoes this year.

Today, local fruit lovers were hit by the avalanche of their dreams when the Phitsanulok Mango Fest 2021 opened in town.

Piled up at Central Plaza Phitsanulok until March 29 are 10 tonnes of prime export-grade Nam Dok Mai and mango products. Sticky mango rice tops the menu of over 100 mango dishes on offer at the festival. Also featured are mango product workshops and even mango-leaf fortune-telling.

This season’s mango glut in Phitsanulok has seen the price of golden Nam Dok Mai plummet to around Bt10-20 per kilo according to grade and size. That’s 300 times less than the price Nam Dok Mai are currently fetching in Europe.

Meanwhile, the price of other mango varieties in Phitsanulok has dropped to around Bt2-Bt5 per kilo.
