“If the application is filed by a proxy, a letter of proxy and copy of the proxy’s ID card are also needed.”

Ministry seeks help to stop illegal sugarcane harvest fires

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 09, 2023

To help reduce air pollution, the Industry Ministry has asked two other ministries to help it prevent farmers from illegally burning their sugarcane fields before harvest, said Panuwat Triyangkulsr, the ministry’s deputy permanent secretary.

Many sugarcane farmers still burn their fields before harvest even though it can land them in jail. The traditional practice makes harvesting more convenient because fire burns the leaves off the cane. However, it creates air pollution.

Panuwat, who is also acting secretary-general of the Cane and Sugar Board Office, said he asked the two ministries to help because they play a crucial role in supervising the country.

They cooperate with all levels of government, including at the provincial, district and tambon levels, he explained.

The Industry Ministry has been trying to prevent farmers from stealthily burning their sugarcane fields and has obtained subsidies for farmers who do not burn them, he said.

Still, many farmers ignore the prohibition.

According to the Cane and Sugar Board Office, 29.81% of the 15 million tonnes of sugarcane sold to sugar mills from December 1 to January 31 was burned before it was harvested.

Ministry seeks help to stop illegal sugarcane harvest firesIn terms of air pollution, burning on sugarcane plantations is equivalent to burning 1.5 million rai of forest.

The top 15 provinces where sugarcane plantations were burned before harvest are Nakhon Ratchasima, Udon Thani, Kalasin, Phetchabun, Khon Kaen, Suphan Buri, Uthai Thani, Nakhon Sawan, Kanchanaburi, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Lop Buri, Sa Kaew, Chaiyaphum, and Mukdahan.

It also produces smog that can damage the tourism industry, the office said.

LGBT and straight couples can register their marriage in Rayong this Valentine’s Day and then honeymoon on the eastern province’s love island of Koh Samet.

The first “Rayong in Love” event will be held at the Phra Chedi Klang Nam in Muang district, a romantic backdrop for couples to tie the knot. The theme will be “Love has no condition”, district chief Ruengrit Prakobtham told a press conference on Wednesday.

“The event welcomes couples of all sexes, including those from LGBT group,” he said. “The district office will issue a marriage certificate for every couple in the fair.”

Ruengrit said marriage certificates issued to LGBT couples will have no legal effect, as Thailand has not yet officially recognised same-sex marriage.

However, they would still have a powerful effect on the hearts of LGBT couples, he said, adding that he would personally sign all the certificates granted in the ceremony.

Participating couples will have a chance to win special prizes including dual gold rings and gift vouchers for hotels and restaurants in Rayong. Newlyweds can also visit booths selling OTOP products and street food in the fair, which runs from 1pm to 8pm next Tuesday.

Those who want the romance to linger can catch a ferry to Koh Samet nearby for a honeymoon on the holiday island.

Apakorn, 42, a member of LGBT community in Rayong, said the community is grateful for the district’s effort to include people of all genders. She said she and her life partner are planning to register their marriage at the event to strengthen their bonds of love.

In an effort to promote the country’s cultural traditions and generate more revenue for communities, the Culture Ministry has chosen 16 Thai festivals to be promoted internationally, ministry permanent secretary Yupha Taweewattanakitborvon said on Wednesday.

She said that in alignment with the Bio-Circular-Green economic model, the ministry has been trying to promote Thai soft power at the international level, particularly in the “5F” industries — food, films, fashion, fighting, and festivals.

“The ministry’s Office of the Permanent Secretary will allocate budgets to Culture offices to promote Thai festivals internationally,” she said.

Thailand’s four major international airports being expanded to cope with return of foreign tourists

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 09, 2023

The government is expanding at least four international airports to cope with the return of foreign tourists after the Covid pandemic, a senior government official said on Thursday.

Deputy government spokeswoman Traisulee Taisaranakul said efforts are being speeded up to expand major international airports after the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand predicted that the number of foreign arrivals would reach the pre-Covid level in 2024.

The expansion of the airports are also aimed at coping with the prediction of the International Air Transport Association, the spokeswoman added. She quoted the IATA as predicting around 200 million foreign arrivals in 2031.Thailand’s four major international airports being expanded to cope with return of foreign tourists

Traisulee said the four major airport expansion projects are:

● Suvarnabhumi International Airport Phase 2

Under the project, the construction of the Satellite Airport Terminal – 1 (SAT-1) has been completed and the Transport Ministry will start using the new terminal this year. The SAT-1 terminal will boost the airport’s capacity from 45 million passengers a year to 60 million a year.

Traisulee said the airport was also building its third runway, and the construction would be completed in 2024. After the third runway is completed, the airport will be able to receive 94 flights per hour from the current 68 flights per hour.

● Don Mueang International Airport Phase 3

The Cabinet on November 29 last year approved the Phase-3 development. Construction will start this year, and is due to be completed in 2029.

The Phase 3 project involves multiple constructions, including the third terminal, a runway, a new aircraft hangar and a warehouse building.

The airport will also build other basic facilities, including a new carpark building, a new office building, new roads, a new maintenance building, a garbage management zone, a new drainage system, and a fire station.

Traisulee said when the project is completed, the Don Mueang airport would be able to accommodate 40 million passengers a year, from the current 30 million.

● Expansion of the U-Tapao International Airport in Rayong

The expansion will be carried out in four phases and once completed in 2055, the airport will be able to receive 60 million passengers a year.

Traisulee said the first phase would be completed in 2024, after which the airport would be able to accommodate 15.9 million passengers a year.

● Phuket International Airport Phase 2

The project aims to expand passenger capacity from 12.5 million a year to 18 million. The project includes the expansion of the international terminal, and the expansion of aircraft hangars as well as expansion of basic infrastructure.

Traisulee said Airports of Thailand Plc, which runs the airports, is now selecting an advisory firm to set the details of the project.

Thailand’s four major international airports being expanded to cope with return of foreign touristsAs part of the preparations for increased international flights, the government has also drafted a new civil aviation master plan, which will be in use until 2037. Traisulee said the Cabinet approved the plan on Tuesday.

Thailand hails RCEP bonanza as trade passes THB10 trillion in first year

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 09, 2023

The first year of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) has boosted Thailand’s trade volume with member countries by 7.11% to over 10 trillion baht, the government said on Wednesday.

Effective since January 1 last year, RCEP comprises 15 countries: the 10 members of Asean (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) plus the five countries with which Asean has free trade agreements – Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand.

Thai exports to RCEP members in 2022 were worth 4.8 trillion baht, with major markets in Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore and South Korea. Meanwhile, imports from RCEP members rose to 5.7 trillion baht, mostly from Brunei, Australia and Myanmar.

Export products that enjoyed the biggest benefit from the RCEP free trade zone were lubricant oil, canned tuna, tapioca chips, fresh durian, rice bran oil, and processed mackerel. Thailand’s biggest customer for these products was South Korea, followed by China and then Japan.

Thailand also imposed RCEP-related import privileges for synthetic textiles, plywood, engine components, ethylene polymer and fresh/dried grapes from China, South Korea and Japan.

Government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said RCEP had led to impressive expansion of Thailand’s economy and strengthened the competitive edge of Thai products in global markets.

RCEP is the world’s largest trading bloc, covering over 30% of the global population.

Introduction to the DIGITAL TRANSFORMER

Introduction to the DIGITAL TRANSFORMER

Advisor | Author | Lecturer | Speaker

Founder of Digital Transformation Academy

We all know that digital disruption and Covid-19 require organizations to accelerate adaptation through Digital Transformation. These are making many companies struggle and rush to transform digitally.

Most organizations, or more than 70%, are unsuccessful in their business transformation because there are no clear explicit plans or approaches of how to make future changes to address this new challenge in order to develop an appropriate digital-driven business strategy.

Digital Leaders VS. Digital Laggards

Digital Leaders or the successful organizations can achieve 1.8x higher earnings growth and 2x higher business value than Digital Laggards.

Digital Leaders can also drive revenue growth 2-3x faster than their competitors.

The gap is growing wider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Digital Transformation 1.0

The First Wave of Transformation

Many years ago before the COVID-19 outbreak, we underwent a digital change to achieve new competitive advantages and thrive in the digital economy through:

Digitization, it is the process of converting information from an analog to a digital format so that computers can store, process, and transmit such information;

Digitalization, it is the use of digital technologies that alters life and work;

Digital Transformation, it is a fundamental change in how we do business, including our core competencies, through digital business transformation.

Digital Transformation 2.0

Entering into The Second Wave of Digital Transformation

A previous study by Accenture showed that leading enterprises are compressing a decade of digital transformation in just 1-2 years following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The next evolution in Digital Transformation: The Post-Digital Transformation Era

According to IDC, the world is moving from Digital Transformation to Digital-First.

By 2022, more than half the global economy is based on or influenced by digital.

Strong digital transformation investment growth is forecast across all sectors, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) ranging between 15% to 20% for 2017-2022. This will accelerate to a CAGR of 16.5% for 2022-2024.

And by 2023, one in two companies will generate more than 40% of their revenue from digital products and services, as compared with one in three companies in 2020.

Conquer 2023 and beyond

To succeed in the digital-first era in 2023 is to be a digital-first enterprise. In other words, preparing for the digital transformation is not enough, you must be a “Digital Transformer” to respond to and tackle changes with positive mindsets towards the business world today and in the future.

In the “Digital Transformer” special edition, you will see the steps towards and case studies of a successful “Digital Transformer” especially in ASEAN the fastest growing Internet market in the world.

Another award for TPI Polene Power (TPIPP)

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 07, 2023

TPI Polene Power Plc (TPIPP) generates electricity from waste heat, municipal solid waste (MSW) and coal. With 180MW MSW-fired capacity, it is the largest power producer of its kind in Thailand. Its 220MW coal-fired plants are modified (in phases) to run on 100% MSW starting 2026.

Thai MSW comes in a highly heterogeneous form in: heating value, moisture content and general characteristics. The Achilles heel of MSW power plants is on how to maximize calorific yield, process 100% of the by-product and keep a tight lid on processing cost.

TPIPP’s success was borne out of years of trials and several permutations using its modified version of the MBT facility (proprietary process). With coal trading close to USD200/t switching to MSW makes economic sense. In addition, there is significant amount of carbon credits each year that currently is not yet monetized.

To maintain its competitive moat, TPIPP devotes its R&D resources to innovate in many key areas. While TPIPP’s NOx/SOx coefficients are low, far below the World Bank’s limit, bringing down these values further remains the long term commitment.
