New Zealand citizens in Bangkok, as well as visitors from the country, celebrated their National Day on Sunday with an event that began with a rare sight in Thailand – a startling Kapa Haka performance.

The performance began with an emotionally powerful rendition of the country’s national anthem, then continued with the unique singing, dancing and chanting that together create a style of performance that is unique to the country’s Māori people.

New Zealanders, known affectionately as “Kiwis“, celebrate their National Day on February 6.

This is the day, in 1840, when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by representatives of more than 500 Māori chiefs and the British Crown. National Day was officially commemorated in New Zealand in 1934 and became a public holiday in 1974.

The treaty of 1840 is considered the nation’s founding document.

Celebrations and appreciation of Māori culture are considered essential – and joyful – in New Zealand. This point was highlighted by Melissa Haydon-Clarke, deputy head of mission at the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok.

After thanking those who attended the event, she said: “It is a significant day in New Zealand to reflect on our combined culture, to see the modern nation that we are today, and to have fun.”

New Zealand National Day is a time to celebrate with friends and family and reflect on what it means to be a Kiwi, participants said.

The celebration offered a wide range of food stallsbarbeques, free-flowing New Zealand wine, golf, and raffles.

But it was the Kapa Haka performance that set the tone. Literally, “Kapa” means “to form a line” and “Haka” means “breath on fire”.

After the anthem, the performance fused sound and movement to convey a powerful sense of identity.

It also included a ceremonial Māori war dance, or challenge, that historically is performed to demonstrate a tribe’s pride, strength, and unity. One of the typical moves is for the male performers to stick out their tongues and widen their eyes to intimidate the enemy.

The event was co-hosted by New Zealand-Thai Chamber of CommerceNew Zealand Society and New Zealand Alumni, and sponsored by  New Zealand Embassy. It was held at TopGolf Megacity Bangna.

In April, Kiwis celebrate ANZAC day in honour of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. It is a national day of remembrance in both countries, commemorating all Australians and New Zealanders “who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations”.

Pakistan Former President Pervez Musharraf Dies in Dubai

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 05, 2023

Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf has died after a prolonged illness at a hospital in Dubai, Pakistani local media reported on Sunday.

Pervez Musharraf, the four-star general who ruled Pakistan for nearly a decade after seizing power in a bloodless coup in 1999, oversaw rapid economic growth and attempted to usher in socially liberal values in the conservative Muslim country.

Musharraf, 79, died in hospital after a long illness after spending years in self-imposed exile, Pakistan media reported on Sunday. He enjoyed strong support for many years, and his greatest threat was al Qaeda and other militant Islamists who tried to kill him at least three times.

But his heavy-handed use of the military to quell dissent as well as his continued backing of the United States in its fight against al Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban ultimately led to his downfall.

Born in New Delhi in 1943, Musharraf was four years old when his parents joined the mass exodus by Muslims to the newly created state of Pakistan. His father served in the foreign ministry, while his mother was a teacher and the family subscribed to a moderate, tolerant brand of Islam.

He joined the army at the age of 18 and went on to lead an elite commando unit before rising to become its chief. He took power by ousting the then-prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, who had tried to sack him for greenlighting an operation to invade Indian-held areas of Kashmir, bringing Pakistan and India to the brink of war.

In his early years in government, Musharraf won plaudits internationally for his reformist efforts, pushing through legislation to protect the rights of women and allowing private news channels to operate for the first time.

His penchant for cigars and imported whisky and his calls for Muslims to adopt a lifestyle of “enlightened moderation” increased his appeal in the West in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

He became one of Washington’s most important allies after the attacks, allowing U.S. forces to operate armed drones from secret bases on Pakistani soil that killed thousands and ordering domestic troops into the country’s lawless tribal areas along the Afghanistan frontier for the first time in Pakistan’s history.

That helped legitimize his rule overseas but also helped plunge Pakistan into a bloody war against local extremist militant groups.

In a 2006 memoir, he took credit for saving Pakistan from American wrath saying the country had been warned it needed to be “prepared to be bombed back to the Stone Age” if it did not ally itself with Washington.

Musharraf also successfully lobbied then-President George W Bush to pour money into the Pakistani military. Still, the army’s allegiances were never unambiguous: its powerful intelligence services cut deals with the Taliban and al Qaeda, and bolstered an insurgency fighting US troops in Afghanistan.

In other areas of foreign policy, Musharraf attempted to normalize relations between New Delhi and Islamabad.

At a regional summit in 2002, less than three years after launching the military operation against India, Musharraf shocked the world when, after finishing a speech, he suddenly moved towards Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to shake hands and offered to talk peace.

Analysts say the issue of Kashmir – which remains the most potent point of contention between India and Pakistan – was close to being solved during the Musharraf era. But the peace process was derailed soon after his rule.

Under Musharraf, foreign investment flourished and Pakistan saw annual economic growth of as much as 7.5% – which remains the highest level in nearly three decades, according to World Bank data.

The later years of his presidency were, however, overshadowed, by his increasingly authoritarian rule. In 2006, Musharraf ordered military action that killed a tribal head from the province Balochistan, laying the foundations of an armed insurgency that rages to this day.

The next year, more than a hundred students calling for the imposition of Sharia law were killed after Musharraf shunned negotiations and ordered troops to storm a mosque in Islamabad. That led to the birth of a new militant group, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, which has since killed tens of thousands in suicide bombings and brazen assaults.

Later in 2007, a suicide attack that assassinated opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, triggered waves of violence. His efforts to strong-arm the judiciary also led to protests and a besieged Musharraf postponed elections and declared a state of emergency.

In 2008, the country’s first democratic elections in 11 years were held. Musharraf’s party lost and facing impeachment by parliament he resigned from the presidency and fled to London.

He returned to Pakistan in 2013 to run for a seat in parliament but was immediately disqualified. He was allowed to leave for Dubai in 2016.

In 2019, a court sentenced him to death in absentia for the 2007 imposition of emergency rule but the verdict was later overturned.

The top official at Phu Kradueng National Park on Monday urged tourists to celebrate Valentine’s Day on the popular mountaintop, saying the chilly weather and the romantic sea of mist would continue until at least next Tuesday.

Adisorn Hemthanon, Phu Kradueng National Park chief, extended the invitation when tourists, who visited Phu Kradueng in Phu Kradueng district of Loei province on Monday morning, were treated to a spectacular view of the sea of mist.

Adisorn said the mist could be seen along the trekking path to the Nok Aen Cliff and the viewpoint for watching the sunrise.Phu Kradueng park offers a romantic milieu for Valentine’s Day

The park chief credited the mist to the cool 15 degrees Celsius weather in the morning and light rains throughout Sunday night.

The park chief added that tourists continued to visit the mountaintop over the weekends.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s booth to promote the Thai capital as a global tourist destination won the top award at India’s premier travel trade show on Saturday.

India overtook China as Thailand’s top source of foreign tourists last year as Beijing imposed tough Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The Bangkok booth at Outbound Travel Mart (OTM 2023), held in Mumbai from February 2-4, was handed the Best Design and Decoration Award by the organiser.

The award was received by Sing Limpirat, deputy director of BMA’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Department.

Over 30,000 people checked out the booth showcasing Bangkok’s charm and attractions, many of whom confirmed they wanted to visit the capital, he said.

The event’s crowd of mostly tourism business operators inquired about travel in Bangkok, as well as Thai handicrafts such as fruit carving, flower arrangement.

Attendees were also interested in dishes available in Bangkok that would appeal to Indian tourists, including Krathong Thong, Panipuri, and chicken satay, as well as Thai and Indian tea.

The Bangkok booth also offered Thai traditional costumes for participants to wear and take selfies, which attracted the longest queues over the three-day exhibition.

The final day saw the BMA showcase awarded Best Design and Decoration in a vote by over 1,250 booth organisers and 30,000 participants.

Thailand is ready to welcome Chinese package tourists who will start arriving from Monday now that Beijing has lifted travel restrictions, a government spokesperson said.

In preparation for the influx, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is coordinating with the Tourism and Sports Ministry and the Transport Ministry to put all necessary measures in place for welcoming tour groups from China, deputy government spokesperson Traisulee Trisaranakul said.

She added that public and private agencies have estimated that the return of tour groups from China would be gradual because tour agencies have been on hold for three years during the pandemic.

Prayut begs coalition MPs to attend House meetings, so bills can be passed

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 06, 2023

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Monday that he has instructed the leaders of coalition partners to ensure their MPs attend all remaining House meetings.

The last session of the incumbent House of Representatives is due to be held on February 28, though the government will complete its four-year tenure on March 22.

In response to reporters’ questions, Prayut said he has done his duty as prime minister. Reporters also asked if he would talk to Parliament President Chuan Leekpai about measures to prevent the remaining House meetings from collapsing due to a lack of quorum.

Prayut said he did not have to meet Chuan because he personally could not issue any orders to MPs of coalition partners, as he had no post in the parties.

He said all he can do as premier is advise coalition leaders to tell their MPs to attend House meetings.

“I would like to call on all MPs to do their duty for the remaining time. Please pass what needs to be passed and enact all important bills,” Prayut said.

For the past few months, House meetings have been adjourned often due to the lack of quorum, prompting reporters on the Parliament beat to label the House as “Sam Wan Nee, See Wan Lom” – “Absent Every Three Days, Collapse Every Four”.

The repeated collapse of House meetings has put the second reading of the hemp and marijuana bill on hold. Also, the two key coalition partners – Bhumjaithai and Democrat parties – have been conflicting over the bill.

Bhumjaithai claims the Democrat Party is jealous of its success with the ganja liberalisation policy, which is why it is undermining the enactment of the bill by not letting its MPs attend meetings.

The bill is expected to lapse at the end of the last parliamentary session.

“I’ve done my part, but the differences and points it has yet to be reviewed to see which issues the coalition partners disagree on,” Prayut added.

‘No political party in a position to field candidates in all 77 provinces’

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 06, 2023

None of the Thai political parties is eligible to contest all 400 constituency-seats in all 77 provinces, according to the database with the Election Commission (EC), a source at the poll agency disclosed on Monday.

The source said the latest update as of February 3 showed that the parties that can contest in the highest number of constituencies can so far field candidates in only 72, not all 77 provinces.

Some of the parties can enter the fray in 71 provinces and most can field candidates in fewer than 70 provinces, the source revealed.

The amended organic laws on election require political parties to have branches or representatives in all 400 constituencies and the parties must hold primary votes among members to select candidates for constituencies where they plan to contest.

As per the latest figures on branches and representatives in constituencies, only a few parties can contest in up to 72 provinces, the source explained, without elaborating on the parties’ names or numbers.

'No political party in a position to field candidates in all 77 provinces'Earlier, the EC Office released the figures of political parties’ branches and representatives, saying only a few parties had a large number of representatives. They include:

• Democrat Party – 25 branches and 315 representatives

• Pheu Thai Party – 4 branches and 311 representatives

• Bhumjaithai Party – 4 branches and 211 representatives

• Seri Ruam Thai Party – 4 branches and 288 representatives

• Move Forward Party – 8 branches and 214 representatives

• Palang Pracharath Party – 4 branches and 263 representatives.

Bleak Expectations: Govt urged to open doors for 1.3 million at-risk youths

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 05, 2023

Nongluck Ajanapanya

The Equitable Education Fund (EEF) is urging Thailand’s government to reform the educational system to make it more resilient and adaptable to students for the over 1.3 million Thai youths not enrolled in school, seeking employment, or training.

Fund director Kraiyos Patrawart took the figure from a recent study by the Thailand Development Research Institute. The study refers to young people between 15 and 24 who are not enrolled in any educational, employment, or training system.

These youths are an underutilised human resource, the EEF said.

“We must find and bring these young people back into the system for development, whether studying in or outside the work system or self-improvement according to the appropriate approach,” Kraiyos said.

According to the study, the 1.3 million young people comprise 10% of the taxable population and 14% of total Thai youth.

Furthermore, their number is expanding at a 1% annual growth rate, despite the fact that the number of people in this age bracket has declined by 1.2% over the last decade.

Young women comprise 65% of the 1.3 million figure and the main reason they are in the group is that many dropped out of school due to pregnancy.

About 8% of 1.3 million youths comprise housewives who have only completed high school.

According to Unesco, if these out-of-school youths are not brought back into the educational system, the economy will lose 330 billion baht per year, or 3% of total gross domestic product.

Kraiyos noted that Thailand’s education system deteriorated during the Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, because the population is aging, Thailand cannot afford to allow a single young person to fall behind in development.

“We have to find a way to help them now for future positive changes in Thai society,” he said.

He urged the government to broaden access to quality education and diversify educational options, citing a study that found that more than 16.1 million people in the working-age population (15 years and older) have only a junior high school diploma or less.

Kraiyos PatrawartKraiyos Patrawart

Although this generation can complete compulsory education, the majority of its members remain informal workers with insufficient skill sets for the job market.

They will experience income insecurity and the lack of social protection for the rest of their lives, Kraiyos said.

“This group of workers needs to be developed from unskilled to skilled workers, which is a worthwhile investment for the country, ” he said, explaining they have the potential to generate more national growth, increase tax collection, and help Thailand escape the middle-income trap.

As the rise of digital technology creates a new model of working, Thailand must conduct an urgent review and develop a concrete action plan to increase the competitiveness of Thai youths, Kraiyos said.

Bleak Expectations: Govt urged to open doors for 1.3 million at-risk youths

The EEF is working with the World Bank, Thammasat University, and the National Statistical Office to develop policy recommendations for human-capital development in Thailand as part of the “Adult Skills Assessment in Thailand” study.

The study is Thailand’s first survey of the skills and readiness of the young working-age population (16-24 years). It aims to assess their lifelong learning, working, and social-emotional skills.

The study is expected to deliver valuable information to formulate policies and strategies to develop and upgrade skills to meet the needs of the labour market.

The study’s findings are expected to be released in the middle of this year.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 06, 2023

Over 600 Muay Thai students on Monday participated in a grand ritual to pay their respects to ancient teachers of the martial art in a ceremony held in Ayutthaya province to mark Muay Thai Day.

The ceremony was held by the Culture Ministry at the Phra Chao Sua Throne Hall at Wat Tuek in Ayutthaya.

Phra Chao Sua, or King Sanphet VIII, or King Suriyenthrathibodi of Ayutthaya from 1703 to 1709 is regarded as the father of Muay Thai.

The grand “wai kru Muay Thai” (paying respect to all Muay Thai teachers from the ancient days) began at 8.39am with Culture Minister Itthiphol Kunplome presiding over the ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by Ayutthaya Governor Niwat Rungsakhon and Kowit Phakamas, director-general of the Cultural Promotion Department.Grand ritual honours father of Thai martial art in Ayutthaya to celebrate Muay Thai Day

The rite to make an offering to King Sanphet VIII was held by Jarasdet Ulit, a senior Muay Thai teacher.

As part of the ceremony, 668 Muay Thai students performed a ritual dance, which is normally performed before fights, in front of the image of the late king.

As part of the ceremony, Itthiphol was also given 668 mongkhon headbands for him to give to Muay Thai teachers of the 668 students. The teachers then placed the headbands on the students and blessed them before they started performing the ritual dance.Grand ritual honours father of Thai martial art in Ayutthaya to celebrate Muay Thai Day

A group of students from some schools in Ayutthaya also performed a musical play about Muay Thai to honour the ancient king.

Some Muay Thai students displayed 15 master postures of the Thai martial art and 15 sub-postures to the audience.

Itthiphol said February 6 marked the day King Sanphet VIII ascended the throne and since he was the father of Muay Thai martial art, the ministry observed the day as Muay Thai Day.

The minister said Muay Thai was Thailand’s soft power that helped boost the kingdom’s popularity and the Thai government would seek to register it as a cultural heritage with Unesco later.

Also marking Muay Thai Day, a Muay Thai festival will be held at the Rajabhakti Park in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, at 4.30pm.
