Thailand’s Actress Joins Usaid, Wildaid, And DNP To End Demand For Ivory

Thailand’s Actress Joins Usaid, Wildaid, And DNP To End Demand For Ivory

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

The United States Agency For International Development (Usaid), WildAid, And Thailand’s Department Of National Parks, Wildlife And Plant Conservation (DNP) Launches The ‘Only Elephants Wear Ivory Best’ Campaign To Reduce The Use And Purchase Of Jewellery And Accessories Made From Ivory.

The campaign enlists Cindy Sirinya Bishop, Thai actress and model, and Master Tossaporn Sritula, Thai Astrology and Feng Shui Expert as campaign ambassadors to deliver the message that ivory belongs to elephants, dissuading consumers from future ivory purchases. The campaign also features two 32-second videos starring the ambassadors.

The campaign, called ‘Only elephants wear ivory best’,  builds upon USAID’s Wildlife Asia’s first ‘Beautiful without ivory campaign’ in 2020 that reached and engaged those who desire to buy or use ivory jewellery and accessories because of its perceived beauty.

“I have always said no to wearing fur or modelling jewellery made from ivory and exotic animal parts. I believe such products are most beautiful and have the most value on the animal itself. I hope that with this campaign, I can pass on the same message to the viewers and in my own small way, help reduce the demand for elephant ivory,” said Cindy Sirinya Bishop.

According to a Usaid  2020  survey,  the ‘Beautiful without ivory’ campaign helped decrease Thai consumers’ intention to purchase ivory products by 50 per cent and the social acceptability of buying and using ivory products by  50 per cent compared to a similar Usaid survey in 2018.  The perception that  ‘ivory is beautiful’ decreased from 67% in 2018 to nearly 48% in 2020.

Thailand's actress joins Usaid, Wildaid, and DNP to end demand for ivory

“We found it very encouraging that the Beautiful without Ivory campaign was remarkably successful in changing attitudes in target groups in just a short time. We hope that ‘Only Elephants Wear Ivory Best’ will continue this trend. The U.S. Government remains committed to our productive partnership with Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation —to end the illegal wildlife trade and protect our environmental and human health by reducing the demand for illegal wildlife products,” said Suphasuk Pradubsuk, Program Development Specialist, Regional Environment Office, Usaid Regional Development Mission for Asia.

A new element to this campaign is its aim to counter a secondary factor that drives the desire for ivory products – the belief that these products bring luck leading to a good life and happiness.  “Things that can help enhance your luck must come from a good starting point. How can amulets made from ivory obtained unnaturally from the elephants make our life better? It is only by doing good and showing compassion towards fellow humans and animals that we can attract good in our lives. Ivory belongs to elephants and brings the most happiness to the elephants themselves,” said Master Tossaporn Sritula.

“Since 2018, DNP has worked closely with Usaid and WildAid to help reduce the demand for illegal elephant ivory products. Reducing demand for illegal wildlife products is one of the other strategies to halt illegal trade that aligns with the guidance of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). We truly believe that by putting an effort into law enforcement together with positive demand reduction campaigns like “Only Elephants Wear Ivory Best”, we can create new value in society to halt the use of wildlife products, which will contribute significantly to the prevention of illegal trade in ivory” said Rutchada Suriyakul Na Ayutya, Director General of the DNP.

The campaign’s launch featured a virtual fireside chat among the campaign ambassadors, Usaid, and the DNP, where they engaged in a lively conversation about the situation of wildlife trade today and how the world needs to evolve so that use of wildlife products becomes totally unacceptable. The virtual launch is available for viewing on WildAid Thailand’s and the DNP’s Facebook page.

“Cindy and Master Tossaporn so eloquently expressed the message that ivory belongs only to elephants and they wear it best. WildAid has been running campaigns to reduce the demand for elephant ivory in Thailand since 2016 and with help from such influential voices, government agencies, and media partners, we hope to establish a new societal norm around ivory and protecting elephants. Together, we can end the demand for ivory,” said John Baker, Chief Program Officer, WildAid.

Usaid, WildAid, and the DNP will continue to deliver the campaign’s communication materials through social media channels and out-of-home media placement to maximize the campaign’s reach with the goal to change consumers’ perception and behaviour around elephant ivory.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

THE NATION

The Highest Accolade For IT Professionals Consists Of Two Million Baht In Cash, A Gold Pin, And A Plaque With A Certificate Of An Honor.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, in her capacity as Advisory Chairperson of the Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation, presented the second “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award 2021” to Dr Royol Chittradon, who has made significant contributions in the field of information technology to society and the nation as a whole, and whose works are evident and concrete in applying advanced information technology to better manage community water resources. His accomplishments have helped transform the people’s way of life and improve their quality of life in a sustainable manner.

Dr Royol Chitradon awarded prestigious “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation 2021”

As one of the specialists in water resource management in Thailand, Dr Royol Chitradon began a research project titled “Management of Water Resources to Solve Flooding Problems in Community Areas.” He designed the Weather 901 system to monitor changes in weather conditions, water situations, rainfalls, and wind direction across the globe in order to send real-time climate information and formulate a plan to assist people in a timely manner. The system has developed into the “National Water and Climate Data Warehouse,” which is the nation’s new water resource management system based on advanced information technology, integrating water resource management-related databases, knowledge, research, and data science in order to provide actionable answers to water issues across the country.  This system is accessible to anyone on www.thaiwater.net and the ThaiWater mobile application, which will not only be used by agencies and organizations, but also by the general public, who can track the water and weather condition independently, anywhere, at any time, for free.

Dr Royol Chitradon awarded prestigious “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation 2021”

Dr Royol has carried out other significant information technology development initiatives, including a compact mobile telemeter system, a data grid, and a geographical information infrastructure, among others. He pursues royally initiated projects in the area of community water resource management in accordance with the principles of the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, simultaneously resolving flooding and drought issues and developing areas in irrigated zones to ensure reliable supply of water, while also creating modest structure to oversee water management in non-irrigated areas. These efforts have helped to combine a number of methods considered appropriate to local conditions in order to systematically develop water, agriculture, and energy, all of which contribute to the promotion of strategic community water resource management. To achieve sustainable development, it is necessary for local communities and their networks to work together to strike a healthy economic and social balance.

Dr Royol Chitradon awarded prestigious “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation 2021”

By understanding the interplay between communities and nature, Dr Royol ‘s concept of systematic problem solving, along with the development and use of information technology to aid in supporting community water management operations and changing the lives of the people in the community, has allowed them to achieve their goal of having sufficient water for both consumption and agricultural use. Since farmers can plant crops at any time of the year and local economies can benefit from an abundance of natural resources, these communities will be more resilient to climate change and natural disasters like floods and droughts. They are also better able to find long-term solutions to issues like poverty. Currently, Dr Royol serves as the Board Chairman of the Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII), in addition to serving on various other boards and committees for charitable and nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving local communities.

Dr Royol Chitradon awarded prestigious “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation 2021”

Dr Thaweesak Koanantakool, Chairman of the Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation said, “Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has graciously bestowed the name Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation and granted permission for the royal acronym “SorThor” to be inscribed on the logo of the foundation. Having the “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award” named after Her Royal Highness is an additional source of great pride.

Dr Royol Chitradon awarded prestigious “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation 2021”

“Never before has any organization in Thailand staged what is widely regarded as the most coveted distinction in information technology among Thai people. After its inception in 2020 with Professor Dr Pairat Thatchayapong as the inaugural honoree, Dr Royol is the award’s second recipient. This award was established by the Foundation in recognition of the critical role that IT professionals play in our society and economy, with the hope that the recipients will serve as inspirations for the next generation of IT innovators and leaders. Thailand’s competitiveness and standard of living will both benefit from these achievements. The award recognizes Thai personnel, whether from the public or commercial sector, who have succeeded in creating, developing, and embracing the use of information technology. It also plays a vital part in the creation of works, inventions, or innovations and creates the groundwork for information technology, leading to change and having a substantial impact on the economy, society, environment, public health, education, and other areas. These awardees have made significant contributions to society and the nation as a whole, with their efforts yielding concrete benefits for its most vulnerable, young, elderly members.

Dr Royol Chitradon awarded prestigious “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award Foundation 2021”

“Each year, the Ratanarajasuda Information Award Foundation will solicit nominations from public and private organizations, foundations, associations, and educational institutions for the award. The award will be judged by a panel of seven specialists, led by Professor Emeritus Dr. Kasem Watanachai, and eleven members of the Foundation’s committee, over whom I presided. The committee determined that Dr. Royol Chitradon will receive the “Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award” for the year 2021 after a rigorous evaluation procedure. His commitment to the advancement of information technology has greatly benefited society and the nation as a whole. It is apparent that his work has produced tangible, multifaceted outcomes in the use of advanced information technology to community water management. It also contributes to changing lives and enhancing people’s quality of life, enabling less privileged members of the community to earn a living through agricultural work and boosting Thailand’s competitiveness. This development will have favorable effects on the economy, society, and environment. Therefore, he is regarded as an information technology professional who is a true model of sustainable development and is a person who is very well suited to receive the Ratanarajasuda Information Technology Award.”

Dow Joins Forces With Thousands Of Volunteers To Collect 6.5 Tons Of Marine Debris On 2022 International Coastal Cleanup Day

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

THE NATION

RAYONG – September 20, 2022 – Dow Thailand Group—Along With The Industrial Estate Authority Of Thailand, Private Entrepreneurs, And Like-Minded Organizations Who Are Concerned About The Environment—Organized A “#PullingOurWeight” Activity On The Occasion Of International Coastal Conservation Day In Rayong Province.

This event has been organized for twenty consecutive years to stop plastic waste from entering the environment and to create awareness around waste sorting at the source. Dow’s volunteers joined forces with over 3,300 volunteers to pick up more than 6,500 kilograms of garbage around the coastal area and put recycling wastes to use according to the circular economy, while aiming to create awareness of sustainable solutions for marine debris.

Dow employees around the world have joined with the Ocean Conservancy to conduct the “International Coastal Cleanup,” which is a global campaign for collecting coastal waste on the 3rd Saturday of September every year, and which is in its 37th year (and 20th year in Thailand). This year, Dow collaborated with the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and other organizations that are concerned about the environment; collecting garbage over more than twenty-five kilometers in the areas of Hat Nam Rin, Hat Phayun, Hat Phla in Ban Chang district, and Hat Suchada, Hat Saengchan, Hat Laemchareon, and Hat Mae Ramphueng in Mueng district, Rayong province—which contain all the important tourist attractions in the province. This campaign aims to drive collaboration among worldwide employees, clients, communities, and partners to reuse and recycle one million tons of plastic waste by 2030.

Dow joins forces with thousands of volunteers to collect 6.5 tons of marine debris on 2022 International Coastal Cleanup Day

Chatchai Luanpolcharoenchai, Dow Thailand President, said “Dow aims to build a sustainable society and community, especially to “stop plastic waste” and prevent it from entering the environment. Plastics are too valuable as materials to be disposed of as waste because we can recycle used plastics effectively and repeatedly, recycling them according to the circular economy. Today’s campaign is intended not only to bring back beautiful nature temporarily, but—most importantly—to make the volunteers see how garbage ends up in coastal areas, find solutions on their own, and have the self-determination to go back and sort waste from the beginning. This will lead to sustainable solutions for marine debris.”

Dow’s campaign not only provides opportunities to various sectors for collecting coastal waste, which is a solution for endpoint problems, but also creates awareness of proactively preventing problems at the beginning by supporting waste sorting in households; especially used plastics—reducing contamination through reuse and recycling. The campaign “Separate and Exchange Bags” allows people to bring 125 pieces of polyethylene plastic (e.g., handling bags, ice bags, rice bags, and water bottle-wrapped films) to exchange for a Dow Green Earth Bag at the event. More than 8,000 bags were collected and sent to the youth group “Dow Asar Pa Pai Rak” for further use in the “Green Challenge BKW x Dow” project of Banchangkarnchanakul Wittaya School; producing income by distributing used plastics to recycling factories to be processed into other products.

Dow joins forces with thousands of volunteers to collect 6.5 tons of marine debris on 2022 International Coastal Cleanup Day

Dow also held an educational exhibition on innovative packaging that is 100% recyclable. Plastic pellets, when combined with 40% of post-consumer recycled resin, can be produced into shrink films that retain properties equivalent to the films made from new plastic pellets. This shrink film is a transparent film for packaging beverages, shampoo, lotion, etc. Other upcycling technologies were showcased such as using recycled plastics for making roads, paving bricks, artificial pallets, etc. Dow also collaborated with Banchang Municipality and the community to organize a workshop on making paving bricks and plant pots from plastic waste and decoupage art from used coffee cups; showing participants how to create value with non-recyclable plastics.

Dow joins forces with thousands of volunteers to collect 6.5 tons of marine debris on 2022 International Coastal Cleanup Day

Ruengrit Prakobtham, Ban Chang District Chief, said “As a Rayong citizen, I am proud to see companies, organizations, and volunteers collecting coastal waste together and bringing back the beauty of the beach, which is particularly important for us. Marine debris problems can be solved if we prevent them from the beginning by recycling waste out of the food waste we generate at home—making it convenient for the responsible governmental sector to deal with the garbage. The private sector will solve problems through technology. Everybody has a key role because this world does not belong to a specific person, but to all of us.”

The organizations that collaborated with Dow to organize the International Coastal Day in Ban Chang district this year were Solvay Group, PTT Asahi Chemical Co., Ltd., NS-Siam United Steel Co., Ltd., Hidaka Yookoo Enterprises Co., Ltd., and the Federation of Thai Industries. Even though COVID-19 still requires preventive measures, preserving the environment is also important and can be done together. This year’s campaign was adjusted to arrange for social distancing, wearing masks during the campaign, and with strict screening of the participants to make sure that all volunteers could participate in the activity safely.

“Catalyzing Next Generation” Restressed At SEAOHUN 2022 Conference

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2022

More Than 300 Health Practitioners, Educators, And Researchers From 30 Countries Gathered At SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference To Brainstorm Ways Forwards To Enhance Country-Level Capacities For Infectious Disease Preparedness, Detection, And Outbreak Response.

At the three-day event during 5-7 September 2022, lessons learnt from the Covid-19 pandemic were shared and Covid-19 was touted as an alarm bell for the urgency in enhancing response capacities and capabilities.

Organized by Southeast Asia One Health University Network in collaboration with Chulabhorn Royal Academy and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid), Chevron, Zoetis, and Pfizer.

The conference themed Catalyzing One Health Citizens of the Future” brought together students, academicians, practitioners and advocates with diverse backgrounds to share their experience, research findings, and perspectives to discuss One Health education, policy gaps and partnership needs in One Health, and complex health threat issues such as the Covid-19 pandemic and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Parntep Ratanakorn, Chairperson of SEAOHUN Executive Board and Chair of the SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference said “We selected this theme because we intend to highlight how health is a concern for all and that we all have impacts upon our wellbeing and that of other living things by the choices we make.”

In his keynote speech “One Health in the Age of Pandemics and Climate Change”, Dennis Carroll, Chair of Leadership Board, Global Virome Project, highlighted the interconnectedness of climate change and pandemics and stressed the need in equipping the next generation with multisectoral knowledge and tools to deal with the urgency, dynamics, and complex global issues.

As the globe is faced with dual challenges – pandemics and climate change, he said the situation is getting more complex and more challenging as reflected through the loss of biodiversity, threats to food security, severity and frequency of floods, storms, drought, etc.

Despite the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels, the threshold has already been breached in many parts of the world and multisectoral threats have been felt by humans, animals, and the environment.

In this regard, One Health Vision could be an answer, he stressed. Starting 15 years ago, One Health seeks to identify problems and solutions, to create platforms that will enhance the next generation’s capabilities for the global population’s wellbeing, not just physical or mental health.

“Catalyzing Next Generation” restressed at SEAOHUN 2022 Conference

Supporting it are emerging technologies that can mitigate the impacts while global citizens’ change behaviours are a must “Look at risks associated with climate change and actions we need to take. Those risks are rapidly evolving and changing,” he said, urging participants to expand One Health Vision. “We know what to do. We know how to do it. What we need to do is to commit ourselves to do it now.”

SEAOHUN 2022 International Conference featured the following panel discussions:
•    Catalyzing One Health Citizens of the Future
•    Innovation to Stop Future Pandemics
•    Combatting a Silent Pandemic: Antimicrobial Resistance

Given the intensifying impacts, panellists at all sessions agreed on the need to develop One Health citizens of the future and equip them with capabilities and tools to prepare for and deal with imminent pandemics and other public health emergency threats.

Collaboration of all parties “whole-of-government, whole-of-society” from public and business sectors to academics including the community was underpinned to expand the One Health approach that brings multiple disciplines to work locally, nationally, and globally to obtain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment.

The panellists at the panel discussion on “Innovation to Stop Future Pandemics” amplified the importance of multi-sectoral, multi-discipline collaboration to prevent and stop diseases and spillover, either via vaccine, new drug development, and real-time data sharing platform.

At the panel discussion on “Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance using One Health Approach”, panellists voiced concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as the silent pandemic may spur over-prescription of antibiotics to tackle associated infections. They stressed the need for a network where evidence and data can be collected, analysed, and utilized for shaping national policies and shared among practitioners.
