Google.org contributes USD7.5 Million in grants and other support to COVID-19

As part of this new commitment, Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, is providing a USD$1.5 million grant to UNICEF to support urgent COVID-19 response needs across five countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Pakistan.

With Thailand and other neighbouring countries currently grappling with a surge in COVID-19 cases, Google today announced a total commitment of USD$7.5 million in new grant funding and other support to help alleviate the current pandemic crisis.

As part of this new commitment, Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, is providing a USD$1.5 million grant to UNICEF to support urgent COVID-19 response needs across five countries including Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Pakistan. From this grant, USD$300,000 will go to UNICEF to support Thailand’s COVID-19 response. UNICEF will use this grant to procure hygiene supplies such as soap, hand gel, alcohol spray, fabric masks, and disinfectant. In partnership with partner non-governmental organizations, the supplies will be delivered to high risk provinces, severely affected by the latest COVID-19 outbreak. UNICEF will also continue to support governments and communities to control the spread of the virus and minimize morbidity and mortality, including by enhancing preparedness for possible future waves of COVID-19.

Announcing these new commitments, Jackie Wang, Country Director for Google Thailand, said, “The current surge in COVID-19 cases is causing immense pressure on our healthcare system, and this Google.org grant to UNICEF aims to deepen our support for Thailand at this critical time. We’ll also continue to focus on ensuring timely access to information, as well as tools for all Thais to stay informed, connected and safe during this crisis.”

Beyond this grant to UNICEF, Google.org is also providing an additional USD$1 million to International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to address the urgent need of oxygen supplies and medical equipment in Indonesia. In addition, Google.org will provide USD$5 million worth of Ad Grants to local government agencies and organizations across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, to run public health information campaigns for free. Since last year, Google has provided over USD$27 million in Ad Grants to support local governments including the World Health Organization who served over 343 million public service announcements (PSAs) to reach audiences with messages on how to stay safe and facts about vaccines.

Since the start of the pandemic, Google.org has also funded vaccine distributions in Asia and across the world through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Google has also focused its efforts in ensuring that information serves everyone in Thailand through its tools and products. For example, providing useful information from authoritative sources related to COVID-19 on Google Search and YouTube. Moreover, Google has worked with the Ministry of Education to develop a national online learning platform to ensure continuation of education in Thailand. Lastly, Google worked with the Ministry of Commerce and other private sector partners to develop the Saphan Digital Program to provide comprehensive training for SMEs in Thailand on all necessary skills in order to conduct business online.

Xayaburi Power explains the flow rates of Mekong are affected by Tropical Storm Cempaka

The rise can be attributed to Tropical Storm Cempaka, which has now weakened into a tropical depression, bringing heavy rain to Northern Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin during the past few days, coupled with the scheduled release of water from the Nam Ou Hydropower Dam.

Mr. Thanawat Trivisvavet, Managing Director of CK Power Public Company Limited (CKPower), the company that manages the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Lao PDR, stated that on July 25, 2021, the flow rate of the water that ran through the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant was 8,000 cubic meters per second, an increase from the average of 3,588 cubic meter per second during the period from July 1 to 24, 2021. The rise can be attributed to Tropical Storm Cempaka, which has now weakened into a tropical depression, bringing heavy rain to Northern Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin during the past few days, coupled with the scheduled release of water from the Nam Ou Hydropower Dam. It is expected that on July 27, the power plant will record 7,200 cubic meters per second in the volume of water passing through its system, which will then gradually drop to 6,400 and 5,600 cubic meters per second on July 28 and 29, respectively.

“The power plant is managed in such a way that it releases the same amount of water downstream as the natural flow that goes into the power plant. This is because the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant has no water storage capability nor reservoir; it is a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant. In other words, the amount of water that flows into the power plant is invariably equal to the amount released out of the power plant into the river, and the natural flow of the Mekong is not affected,” said Mr.Thanawat.

A comparison of the average monthly volumes of water passing through the power plant against the highest and lowest flow rates over the past 80 years (1940-2020), dating back to the period prior to the establishment of the power plant, demonstrates that the current volumes are within the recorded range and that flow rates can vary, with higher volumes in wet years and lower in dry years. The average volume of 2021 is projected to be similar to that of 2018 which was recorded as a wet year.

Bangkok Airways to resume its first international flight (Samui – Singapore)

Bangkok Airways to resume its first international flight (Samui – Singapore), starting from 1 August 2021 onwards

Starting from 1 August 2021, Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited will resume its first international service between Samui and Singapore in order to support Thailand’s re-opening project and the Samui Plus Model project.

The resumed services between Samui and Singapore will be operated by an Airbus A319 aircraft, starting with three flights per week (Monday, Thursday and Sunday). The outbound flight PG961 departs Samui Airport at 15.05hrs. and arrives Singapore International Airport at 18.00hrs. The inbound flight PG962 departs Singapore International Airport at 19.30hrs. and arrives Samui Airport at 20.35hrs.

Passengers entering Thailand are required to follow guidelines issued by the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) directive No. 7/2564 on 24 June B.E. 2564 (2021) which requires that each passenger entering the country must possess the complete set of the relevant documents. The documents include: Certificate of Entry (COE), Medical certificate with a laboratory result indicating that COVID-19 is not detected (done by RT-PCR technique and issued no more than 72 hours before traveling), Vaccine Certificate or proof of vaccination. Additionally all passengers must undergo required COVID-19 tests (RT-PCR method) during their stay in Thailand. Travelers with a certificate of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test are exempt from compulsory quarantine if travelling to the following islands: Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. They must stay on the island for at least 14 days before travelling to other regions in Thailand.

Bangkok Airways to resume its first international flight (Samui – Singapore)

Thais eat low fruits and vegetables and too much salt, UN says

Policymakers urged to drive vegetables as national agenda to curb non-communicable diseases killing 400,000 Thais every year.

Thai population particularly the young still consume insufficient amount of fruits and vegetables. Following the latest study by Mahidol University’s Institute of Population and Social Research, the average 250g of vegetables consumed each day by Thais, particularly the young are still much lower than the 400g daily consumption recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO)

The level of pesticide contamination in vegetables and fruits, aggressive marketing and unhealthy food, ineffective labelling and easy access to unhealthy food products are key social and commercial determinants seen as the root cause of such unhealthy diet, said Renu Garg WHO Thailand medical officer during the recent UN Food System Summit National Dialogue held via Zoom meeting raised concern over the high sodium level contained in each meal among Thai population.

She also raised concern over high alt intake. The national nutritional guideline recommends 600mg or 0.12 teaspoon of sodium per meal. However, common street foods such as Som Tam and roasted chicken could contain approximately 1,800mg. Instant cup noodle contains about 1,935mg and Tom Yum Kung could have as much as 2,200mg of salt.

“Eating too much salt is a real problem as it could lead to obesity, diabetes and hypertension and the trends are heading in the wrong direction,” Dr Garg said to over 200 participants joining the online meeting.

NCDs are top killers in Thailand. As many as 400,000 deaths are reported every year, equal to one death in every minute.

To promote healthy diets among children, Dr Garg said involved parties should seek ways to improve school meals by increasing vegetable and fruit serving in school meals. Selling sugary drinks in and around schools should be reduced or banned. Regulation on market restriction should also be undertaken to ban inappropriate marketing of unhealthy food and beverages. Public campaign to promote healthy diets should also be carried out.

Fiscal policies on the use of a combination tax and subsidy should be implemented to improve nutrition and transform the food systems. This includes tax on sugar, sweetened beverages and excessive salty food and junk food. A policy on subsidising fruits and vegetables will help reduce prices by 10 to 30%. Dr Garg recommended that a combination of subsidies and taxation would have greater effect and encourage manufacturers to reduce salt while adding more vegetable and fruits contents into products.

Warren Lee, Senior Nutrition and Food Systems Officer at Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), said vegetables and fruits should be more accessible for low-income households.

Since unhealthy diet is a major contributor to premature mortality in Thailand, upstream multi-sectoral action is needed to address these social and commercial determinants. Transformation of food systems from farm to fork will help improve diet and nutrition, protect natural resources, community livelihood and sustainability.

“Improving nutrition requires addressing all stages of food systems horizontally and

vertically where foods come from, in order to make the food systems sustainable. Food systems go well beyond production. It governs safety, diet quality and affordability of foods, nutrition and health outcomes. It also has impacts on environment,” he said

To transform the food systems, Policymakers need to review existing agricultural policies and investment priorities to ensure diversified and nutritious food supply for healthy diets. Food-based dietary guidelines should be developed. Pesticides in vegetable and fruit production should be controlled and reduced.

Inclusive engagement with government sectors, multi-stakeholders from food production to consumption including private sectors, civil society organisations (CSOs) and consumers, is crucial for driving change. Transparent mechanism should be initiated for monitoring and evaluating cost effectiveness throughout all sectors.

Dr Pairoj Saonuam, Assistant CEO, Thai Health Promotion Foundation, said promoting safe, sufficient fruits and vegetables for food is in relevant to the 13th economic and social development plan and should be proposed as a national agenda.

“Food security is the foundation of human security and national security. Sufficient food will bring positive effect to health. Many reports worldwide also emphasised that the importance of fruits and vegetables for health prevention, particularly NCDs,” he said.

In Canada, a decrease in the proportion of Canadians with inadequate consumption of fruits and vegetables by 1% per annum was estimated to save 10.8 billion Canadian dollars in health expenses and productivity loss in the next 20 years. An increase in fruit and vegetable consumption by 1 portion/day was estimated to save up to 9.2 billion Canadian dollars. , thanks to inclusive policies on sufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables, leading to not only reduction of not only NCD risk but also other socioeconomic issues, Dr Pairoj said.

ThaiHealth will also work with Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (MOAC) to raise public awareness on adequate consumption of fruits and vegetables, promote good health and NCD risk reduction, manage food for health systems, and promote quality and safe food consumption, leading to food security regarded as one of the indicators towards sustainable development.

Rapibhat Chandarasrivongs, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, as the national convener, said the national vegetable dialogue and a policy on safe vegetable and fruit consumption would be the key topic when the country participated in the upcoming United Nations Food Systems Summit to be held in New York in September to call on world leaders and agriculture ministers to hurriedly reform a policy on food systems and agricultural sustainability towards sustainable development goals.

MOAC will also lead Thailand to announce the aimed transformation of the national health systems, through five action tracks: Ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all; Shift to sustainable consumption patterns; Boost nature-positive production; Advance equitable livelihoods; and Build resilience to vulnerabilities, shock and stress.

Thais urged to pledge against buying and owning ivory and tiger amulets under new ‘Mercy is Power’ campaign

Bangkok, 23 July 2021 – Demand for elephant ivory and tiger products is a significant driver of the illegal wildlife trade, but a new campaign is encouraging Thais to join celebrities and social influencers like Cherry-Khemupsorn and Wannasingh Prasertkul in a bid to prevent further detriment to these species.

‘Mercy is Power’ is a joint campaign between TRAFFIC, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from the Global Environment Facility.

The campaign challenges the widely held belief in Thailand that buying or possessing an elephant ivory or tiger amulet can make life better. As per Buddhist teachings, success and progress in life are from one’s own hard work and strong will. Real power comes not from possessing products that require the killing of animals but by showing them mercy and not buying animal products. “Our mission is to conserve, promote and restore forest resources, wildlife and plant species in forest areas for conservation. I believe the campaign will succeed in getting people to rethink and change their attitudes and behaviours towards the use of ivory and tiger amulets. This directly contributes to our effort to combat illegal wildlife trade,” said Thanya Netithammakun, Director General of the DNP.
It is illegal to possess ivory unless products were registered to the owners in 2015 or before. Anyone in ownership of unregistered ivory and tiger products after this period is considered illegal based on the new Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act (WARPA) of 2019. This replaced a former WARPA and increased penalties, both in imprisonment and fine.

TRAFFIC’s analysis of 32 countries and territories found 369 tigers were seized from 49 incidents in Thailand between 2000 and 2018. A further 24 tigers were seized in six incidents in the country up until 2020. TRAFFIC monitored the ivory trade online in 2019 and found that more than 1,000 ivory items were found for sale online in Thailand over just five days in the snapshot survey.

“Social norms around wildlife products are evolving. More people are beginning to understand that buying or owning these products has a direct negative impact on wildlife conservation and see it as increasingly socially unacceptable. Demand reduction efforts can help end illegal wildlife trade and thereby conserve endangered species. By launching the ‘Mercy is Power’ campaign together with TRAFFIC and the DNP, we can reinforce this positive trend and hopefully end illegal wildlife trade for good”, said Renaud Meyer, UNDP Resident Representative to Thailand.

Phuket Authorities show support for Thailand International Boat Show

Q2 profit expectations fuel CK Power share surge

CKPs stock price rose to 6 baht on Thursday morning, increasing from the previous price by 0.20 baht or 3.45 per cent. The share hit its highest point at THB6.10 and the lowest at THB5.95 baht on Thursday with total trade value at THB135.20 million.

The shares of Energy company CK Power (CKP) climbed over 3 per cent on Thursday, amid possibility of the company reporting a THB750 million profit for the second quarter.

CKP’s stock price rose to 6 baht on Thursday morning, increasing from the previous price by 0.20 baht or 3.45 per cent. The share hit its highest point at THB6.10 and the lowest at THB5.95 baht on Thursday with total trade value at THB135.20 million.

Maybank Kim Eng securities suggested that investors should purchase the CKP stock when it is at THB6.50 per share. The securities firm expected CKP to soon announce around THB750 million profit for the second quarter. It predicted even greater growth for the energy company in the third quarter.

CKP holds shares in the Nam Ngum 2 and Xayaburi hydroelectric power plants in Laos. The movement of tropical storm Koguma to upper Laos is expected to provide more water for the plants to generate electricity.

Mr. Thanawat Trivisvavet, Managing Director of CK Power Public Company Limited (CKPower), “CKP” on SET, stated that tropical storm Koguma struck Laos on June 13, 2021, bringing torrential rain that triggered flash floods across many areas. The downpour also caused the Nam Hung river, a tribulary of the Mekong River, to burst its banks, flooding Xayaboury Town and affecting 4,897 households in 39 communities along the river banks, leaving their houses and streets buried under the mud carried to the area by the floodwater which also caused difficulties for travelling.

After the floodwater subsided, Xayaburi Power Company Limited (XPCL), a subsidiary of CKPower, sent water trucks along with volunteers to the affected communities, located around 45 kilometers to the west of the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Lao PDR, to clean the streets and surrounding areas as well as to deliver necessities, which were received by representatives of the administrative office of Xayaboury Province for distribution to the flood-stricken households.

CKPower rushes aid to flood-stricken communities hit by Koguma around its power plant in the Lao PDR.

“CKPower and its subsidiaries, along with all its employees, has always prioritized contributing to society and placed importance on the communities around our power plants. Following the heavy rainfall and ensuing floods, CKPower and its employees promptly provided assistance to the affected communities to alleviate the impact and to enable them to resume their normal lives as soon as possible,” said Thanawat.

The power production of the Xayaburi Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Nam Ngum 2 Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in Xaisomboun Province, was not affected by the incident and was able to carry on as usual.

The company also aims to enhance its renewable energy power generation capacity to supply power plants, large industrial factories, and SMEs as well as further develop its production plan for electric vehicle batteries.

Global Power Synergy Public Company Limited or GPSC unveiled its G- Cell energy storage unit factory with a total initial capacity of 30 MWh ( megawatt- hours) , the first in South East Asia that employs the SemiSolid technology. Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, General Prayut Chan- o- cha graciously presided over the opening ceremony of the facility, which is located in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate in Rayong Province. GPSC has been granted license to manufacture and sale of the technology, starting with the production of LFP ( Lithium- Ion Phosphate) G- Cells, which are not only highly safe and durable but also easily recyclable, environmentally friendly which are suitable for a wide range of applications. The plant now has an initial capacity of 30 MWh per year, and is able to expand the production capacity up to 100 MWh per year. Expansion plan to a 1- GWh ( gigawatt- hour) facility is under study and in the process of further investment planning.

G- Cell, a basic battery pouch cell 2. G- Pack, or battery pouch cells assembled into a battery module and a battery pack and incorporate with a battery management system (BMS) for light-duty and heavy-duty mobility applications such as EV buses, boats, Tuk Tuks, compact cars and motorbikes as well as the stationary energy storage system manufacturing industry and 3. G-Box, a ready-to-use Uninterruptible Power Supply unit (UPS) and an Energy Storage System (ESS) with a capacity between 10-1,000 kWh. IoT (Internet of Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Block-Chain technology could be also employed in creating service platforms that effectively meet customers’ various demands.

“ Our broad range of key customers include PTT group, clean energy power plants, large industries, small and medium entrepreneurs, businesses whose products require batteries. Initially, the focus will be on manufacturers and users of energy storage systems ( ESS) and small and large electric vehicles which are effectively compatible with our LFP ( Lithium Ion Phosphate) G- Cells. As for passenger electric vehicles, an industry with a potential for dramatic growth in Thailand, which aims to have electric vehicles account for 30% of its automotive production by 2030, may require NMC ( Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) battery. GPSC can import products with the same technology for our customers from Anhui Axxiva New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (AXXIVA), a company that we have invested in,” added Mr. Worawat.

The SemiSolid battery cells are highly safe and can effectively prevent short- circuiting in the cells where unit cells are covered with a special insulation film. With the SemiSolid platform, G- Cells are also environmentally friendly and more easily recyclable than conventional Lithium-Ion batteries. Therefore, customers can rest assured that GPSC’s G-Pack and G-Box will effectively address their needs.
