The general public has been told to strictly adhere to DMHTT practices, namely distancing, mask wearing, hand washing, testing and ThaiChana check-in.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has also said that people travelling from high-risk areas, especially “red” zones, must isolate themselves for 14 days.

Meanwhile, all high-risk areas in controlled “red” provinces must be closed, CCSA spokesman Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin said on Tuesday, adding that dining in at restaurants will be prohibited from 9pm to 6am, all stores are required to set up checkpoints to screen people entering the area and ensure visitors check-in via the MorChana application. Also, inter-provincial travel is banned unless absolutely necessary or involving the transport of goods, while field hospitals will be set up if needed.

“Red” or highly-controlled provinces include Tak, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, Saraburi, Lopburi, Singburi, Ang Thong, Nakhon Nayok, Kanchanaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Ratchaburi, Suphanburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Phetchaburi, Samut Songkhram, Samut Sakhon, Chachoengsao, Prachinburi, Sa Kaew, Samut Prakan, Chanthaburi, Chonburi, Trat, Rayong, Chumphon, Rayong and Bangkok.

Of these provinces, Samut Sakhon, Rayong, Chonburi, Chanthaburi and Trat have been recognised as maximum control provinces or “maroon” zones where new patients continue rising due to risky behaviour and gambling dens.

There will be strict surveillance of all people’s movements and hygiene practices in these provinces.

“Since the situation in the province is likely to escalate, we have decided to ban overnight camping and water activities in the national park from January 4 to 31 to ensure the safety of tourists and national park officials,” the announcement said.

Foreign funds flows expected to prop baht up this year

NationalJan 05. 2021

The baht opened at 29.90 to the US dollar on Tuesday, weakening from 29.88 at close on Monday.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 29.90 and 30 on Tuesday, said Jitipol Puksamatanan, senior director of the chief investment office at SCB Securities.

On Monday night, the US financial market was in a risk-off state due to investors’ concerns about the Covid-19 crisis and the important election to the US Senate from Georgia. The S&P 500 dropped to 1.4 per cent, while the VIX market rose to 26.9 points, the highest in two weeks. However, the Stoxx 600 index rose by 0.4 per cent.

The US dollar at the same time strengthened, while the Australian dollar weakened. The British pound also weakened, as the UK completely left the EU.

Meanwhile, gold price rose to $1,945 (Bt58,193) per ounce, as the market believed the inflation rate around the world would increase.

In Thailand, Jitipol informed that the baht this year would be supported by purchasing power of foreign investors in stocks and bonds in Thailand.

He suggested that investors monitor the direction of investment taking place in Thailand. “If there is no unexpected factor occurring in the future, capital will flow continually into Thailand making it more difficult for the baht to weaken.

Flash flood risk in the South as heavy rain forecast

NationalJan 05. 2021

By The Nation

The weak high-pressure system over upper Thailand and the South China Sea will push temperatures up by 1-3 degrees Celsius, the national weather agency forecast on Tuesday.

Mornings will see foggy conditions with dense fog in some places while the weather will remain cool to cold, the Thailand Meteorological Department said. People in upper Thailand should exercise caution while moving outdoors due to poor visibility, the department said.

A rather strong northeast monsoon prevails over the Gulf and the South while there is a low cell over the coast of Malaysia. Isolated heavy rain is likely in the lower South. People in these areas should beware of heavy rain and accumulated rain that may cause flash flooding.

Moderate winds trigger waves in Nakhon Si Thammarat southward about two metres high and above three metres during thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution, the department said.

The weather forecast for different regions of the country:

North: Cool to cold with fog in the morning and isolated dense fog in some areas; temperature rises by 1-2°C; minimum temperature 13-19°C, maximum 28-32°C; cold to very cold on mountaintops with minimum temperature 4-11°C; northeasterly winds at 10-20 kilometres per hour (kph).

Northeast: Cool to cold with fog in the morning and isolated thick fog; temperature rises by 1-3°C; minimum temperature 14-19°C, maximum 29-31°C; cold on mountaintops with minimum temperature 8-14°C; northeasterly winds 10-20kph.

Central: Cool with fog in the morning and isolated dense fog; temperature rises by 1-3°C; minimum temperature 19-21°C, maximum 31-32°C; northeasterly winds 10-20kph.

Surat Thani northwards: Northeasterly winds 15-35kph; waves1-2 metres high.

Nakhon Si Thammarat southwards: Northeasterly winds 20-35kph; waves about two metres high and above three metres in thundershowers.

Prayut cancels ban on Bangkok restaurant dining

NationalJan 04. 2021

By The Nation

The order banning restaurant dining in Bangkok was cancelled on Monday, a day before it was due to take effect.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha scrapped the ban after Monday’s meetingof the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA). Instead, from Tuesday dining in restaurants will be permitted until 9pm, after which they can only offer takeaway services.

Prayut said he had listened to suggestions and concerns from restaurant associations over the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s announcement of seven new restrictions.

“In response, I have postponed the order [banning restaurant dining]. Customers will be allowed to eat in restaurants until 9pm. However, restaurants need to arrange their tables in line with social-distancing practices. If not, they will be shut down temporarily,” Prayut said.

However, restaurants are still banned from serving alcohol.

Meanwhile anyone planning to hold a party or large gathering must seek permission from the BMA or health officials first.

The order is effective from Tuesday until January 31.
