Two teens nabbed for running underage prostitution ring in Kanchanaburi

Members of Thailand’s Anti-Trafficking in Persons task force nabbed two teenagers, 19 and 16, at a hotel in Kanchanaburi’s Muang district for allegedly running a prostitution ring.

Officers also rescued two 15-year-olds who had been brought to the hotel by the suspects to provide sexual services.

Police said they had been keeping an eye on the Twitter account “@aethanwawadi”, which offered to procure girls aged 16 to 18 at a fee of 1,300 baht per session. The account, which only offered services in Kanchanaburi, has more than 7,000 followers.

“The two suspects, claiming to be mature women of 25, would invite young girls to join their business,” police officers said. “They would drive the girls to the hotel their client was at and collect the money. They would then pocket 400 baht as their fee and give 900 baht to the girls.”

The suspects reportedly said they had been running the business for about two months because most brothels in the province have been shut down in police crackdowns.

Prayut launches Red Line commuter train service

The long-awaited Red Line commuter train service was launched on Monday morning in a virtual ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The line, which is two years behind schedule, will cut travel time between the heart of Bangkok and its suburbs to less than half an hour thanks to high-speed electric trains.

A three-month trial run kicked off at 10.30am on Monday, and the service is expected to start commercial operations from November.

The Red Line runs two routes – the 10-station 26km Bang Sue-Rangsit route which takes 25 minutes to cover and the three-station 15km Bang Sue-Taling Chan route which takes about 15 minutes.

Fares range from 12 to 42 baht.

The service starts at 6am and ends at 7.30pm on both routes.

Trains will run at an interval of 30 minutes during normal hours but every 15 minutes during rush hour (7am-9am and 5pm to 7.30pm).

More Sinopharm jabs arrive in Thailand

The fifth batch of the 10 million doses ordered by the Chulabhorn Royal Academy arrived from China on Sunday. This batch had one million doses.

The academy is one of the five organisations authorised to import Covid-19 vaccines. Sinopharm, approved for emergency use by the World Health Organisation, is one of the five vaccines given the go-ahead by the Thai Food and Drug Administration.

In cooperation with the Public Health Ministry and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the academy has been distributing the jabs to people in the capital at the set price of 1,554 baht for two doses.

Meanwhile, the delivery schedule of the Sinopharm vaccines is as follows:
June 20: 1 million
July 4: 1 million
July 18: 1 million
July 25: 1 million
August 1: 1 million
August 15: 1 million
August 22: 2 million
August 29: 2 million

The vaccine has been allocated as follows:
• 4.5 million doses allocated for corporations
• 3.9 million doses for local administration offices
• 114,068 jabs administered to the general public since July 28
• 351,047 jabs administered to vulnerable and underprivileged groups

The aim is to provide Sinopharm jabs free of charge to five targeted groups, namely:
• People with disabilities
• Underprivileged people living in crowded conditions
• Elderly, bed-ridden or chronic patients
• Monks
• People at risk who are unable to register on the official vaccination scheme.

Of the 10 million doses ordered, 8.9 million have been booked, while 1.1 million doses are still up for the taking.
The academy will launch a second round of registration this month for individuals and companies, which will be eligible to book 100 to 2,000 doses.

The academy is also considering providing Sinopharm jabs to children between the ages of three and 17, as the Chinese government has approved emergency use of the vaccine for this age range.

The Chulabhorn Royal Academy will gradually slow down the import of Sinopharm jabs once vaccines are more easily available later this year.

Economy expected to take up to THB400 bn hit from Covid control measures #SootinClaimon.Com

Economy expected to take up to THB400 bn hit from Covid control measures

The two-week extension of the lockdown period and expansion of the “dark red” zone to cover 29 provinces would cost the economy around THB300-400 billion due to lost economic activities, the Thai Chamber of Commerce said on Sunday.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, on Sunday extended lockdown measures for another 14 days starting August 3 in a bid to tackle the fast-spreading Delta variant. In addition, the CCSA also increased the number of provinces in the “dark red” zone from 13 to 29.

The CCSA will evaluate the situation again on August 18 and may extend the lockdown to August 31 if the situation does not improve.

“The damage from lockdown and control measures in 29 dark red zone provinces is estimated at THB300-400 billion per month, as the newly announced dark red zone provinces are business centres and locations of industrial estates, such as Nakhon Ratchasima, Rayong, Saraburi and Samut Songkram,” chamber chairman Sanan Angubolkul said.

Meanwhile the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) president, Suphan Mongkolsutee, said on Sunday that the government’s extension of the lockdown was not unexpected based on the trend of infections, but classifying more provinces as dark red zones from the 13 earlier would further affect the manufacturing sector. “The dark red zone provinces account for 70-80 per cent of the country’s overall production capacity. Increasing disease control measures would hinder economic activities even further,” he said. “Furthermore, if there aren’t enough rapid testing and vaccination facilities provided to people in these provinces, it could lead to a surge of infections in lockdown areas.”

Pulled down by the Covid crisis, baht on brink of 33 to the dollar

The baht opened at 32.96 to the US dollar on Monday, weakening from 32.88 at close on Friday.

The Thai currency is likely to move between 32.90 and 33.05 during the day and between 32.70 and 33.20 this week, Krungthai Bank market strategist Poon Panichpibool said.

He said the two factors that could determine the baht’s direction was the dollar’s movement and the Covid-19 situation.

Poon predicted that the dollar could move sideways in the short term, while its strengthening factor was a demand for haven assets as the world is in the grip of the virus crisis.

However, the dollar would weaken if economic numbers of the US, such as the nonfarm payroll, were lower than observers’ expectations, he added.

Poon said that the baht could be pressured to touch 33 to the US dollar due to Covid-19 situation in Thailand. However, he believed the Bank of Thailand would help reduce currency fluctuation in some way.

This week, Poon suggested that investors monitor information in the US labour market, as well as performance reports of registered companies.
