Alcohol spray guns dangerous and ineffective says Thai FDA

Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement on Thursday urging people to avoid using alcohol spray guns.

Supatra Boonserm, FDA’s deputy secretary-general, suggested that people only use products that have an FDA stamp.

Products approved by the FDA can be checked at http://www.fda.moph.go.th under the “product checking” (ตรวจสอบผลิตภัณฑ์) section.

Supatra said droplets sprayed by the gun are too small so their capacity to sterilise surfaces is inadequate. Also, she said, this makes the virus spread more easily and can be dangerous when breathed in, especially for children.

The accompanying UV rays can also cause skin cancer or hurt the eyes if directed at the body.

Niphon Chamnongsirisak, the office’s director, said on Thursday that this discovery was possible thanks to a project launched by the Panthera Corporation and the Zoological Society of London to study wild cats in the area. He added that these images prove the ecosystem in the area is thriving.

Monk on a mission: Bangkok monk dons PPE suit to tend to his flock

Disturbed by people’s suffering, a Buddhist monk decided to don a PPE suit and start travelling around Bangkok to conduct Covid-19 tests and help patients in severe condition.

The monk said he always wore his saffron robes under the PPE suit during the operation, though he admitted not many people realise there is a monk under the suit.

During their daily patrol, Phra Maha Phrom Phong and his team carry food, milk, medical equipment, pulse oximeters, medicine and rapid test kits. If the monk or his team finds patients in a severe condition, they provide treatment or even move them to waiting centres.

“Some of the severe patients we have seen did not have an oxygen tank and many of them have died because they could not breathe,” he added.

The assistant abbot said his temple has also built a 122-bed waiting centre since July 17, with nurses and volunteers at hand to take care of patients.

He said he could not bear to see the people who offered him alms every day die from Covid-19, adding that his temple has already cremated 50 corpses of patients who succumbed to the virus.

The monk said he bought rapid test kits, which cost 300-350 baht each, with donations from other monks.

“If I could ask for something from the government, I would ask that people be vaccinated as soon as possible,” he said. “We should offer walk-in services at all public health centres. I want everyone to have access to a jab. If everybody gets a jab, the problem will be solved at the root.”

The monk said his mission requires more oxygen tanks and rapid test kits. Those wishing to donate can call (061) 729 5995 or (02) 211 1564.

Samui Plus project to continue as island chief orders proactive Covid-19 tests after cluster

The district chief of Samui ordered immediate proactive Covid-19 tests in a bid to curb the latest cluster on the island. He also confirmed the Samui Plus project would move ahead.

On Wednesday, district chief Teerapong Chuaychoo along with Koh Samui Hospital doctors and the island’s district health officers set up a Covid-19 proactive screening point at Phru Chaweng multipurpose pavilion after 20 new cases were reported earlier.

The new cluster emerged at a birthday party at an establishment in Bophut district, causing 16 people to be infected.
An additional four cases were discovered. Three were family members of a patient and one had returned after travelling outside the island.

“The new cluster developed from the 99th infected case on Samui – a 32-year-old Thai female fitness club cashier who tested positive after attending a birthday party earlier,” the chief said.

“As for now, we have elevated safety measures, conducting proactive screening tests and preparing accommodation for patients with up to a 100-bed capacity. The Bophut district police are also investigating this new cluster to see if there were any violations of anti-Covid-19 measures,” Teerapong said.

“We will continue to welcome tourists under the Samui Plus model as the virus spread has occurred in a limited area and the situation is still under control,” he added.

Police know account of vaccine booking-system hacker

The Railway Police Division told media on Wednesday that it knows the account of a hacker who hacked into a phone service provider’s vaccine booking system to allegedly steal quotas.

The hacker tapped into the system to gain booking quotas and was selling each at THB500-1,000.

The illegal action was committed across three days, leading Dr Mingkwan Wichaidit, a director at Bang Sue Grand Station’s inoculation site in Bangkok, to file a complaint with police.

The Railway Police Division, among other agencies, followed up on the complaint and discovered the account the hacker used.

The division told the press that it also knows those who have suffered because of the hacking and were intensifying its investigation.

Switzerland flying in 26 tonnes of medical supplies to Bangkok

Swiss Humanitarian Aid (SHA) dispatched 100 respirators and more than a million antigen tests to Bangkok on Wednesday, the agency said in a press release.

The aid coincides with a tour of Southeast Asia by Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis that will include a visit to Thailand.

SWA said that in view of the worrying public health situation in Thailand, the agency “decided to support the country in its efforts to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic”.

On Wednesday, a Swiss cargo aircraft carrying the more than 26 tonnes of medical supplies left Zurich for Bangkok. The supplies were provided from the inventory of the Swiss Armed Forces Pharmacy (SAFP) and the Federal Office of Public Health.

The shipment includes around nine million Swiss francs worth of equipment, with the SAFP supplying 100 respirators and the FOPH providing more than a million antigen tests.

The Swiss embassy in Thailand is in close contact with the authorities to ensure that the items are distributed fairly based on need, in accordance with humanitarian principles, SHA said via the press statement.

This shipment, which is part of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, coincides with Cassis’s tour of Southeast Asia from August 1 to 6, which includes a visit to Thailand.

Cassis will attend the official handover ceremony for the supplies, which is scheduled to take place on August 2 in Bangkok.

Wednesday’s shipment to Thailand is Switzerland’s seventh international delivery of humanitarian goods in response to the Covid-19 crisis since May.

SHA has already sent supplies, including respirators, oxygen concentrators and personal protective equipment to Indonesia (July 24), Tunisia (July 16), Mongolia (July 2), Sri Lanka (June 7), Nepal (May 21) and India (May 6).

Switzerland continues to monitor the global public health situation relating to Covid-19 and is ready to provide assistance wherever possible upon request, the statement added.

UK donates 415,000 AstraZeneca doses to Thailand, 1 day after US pledges 2.5m doses

The UK government announced on Wednesday it will donate 415,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Thailand, as the Kingdom battles a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The vaccine donated to Thailand is among 9 million doses that the UK is handing to developing countries, of which 5 million will be sent to the COVAX global vaccine-sharing scheme. News of the donation comes a day after US Senator Tammy Duckworth revealed that the US government plans to send 2.5 million doses of vaccine to Thailand. Duckworth, a Thai-American lawmaker, said the US valued its special relationship with Thailand, its oldest friend and ally in the region. A US donation of 1.54 million doses of Pfizer vaccine is due to arrive in Thailand on Friday. The Public Health Ministry announced this shipment would be used to inoculate front-line medical workers and vulnerable people. Thailand logged a record 16,533 new Covid-19 cases and 133 fatalities on Wednesday.

Travel clampdown in Dark Red provinces; Anutin vows 1m jabs per day from Aug

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday ordered the governors of 12 Dark-Red provinces to monitor inter-provincial travel closely to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Thirteen provinces fall under the Dark-Red zone of maximum disease controls due to their high number of infections. They are Bangkok, Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Narathiwat, Pathum Thani, Pattani, Ayutthaya, Yala, Songkhla, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon. The governor of Bangkok met with the PM earlier this week.

Prayut’s Zoom meeting on Wednesday with the other 12 governors was joined by Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paochinda.

The PM instructed the governors to monitor the Covid-19 situation in their provinces closely and notify the government immediately if they have any problems and require assistance.

“Inter-provincial travel must be strictly regulated to prevent the outbreak from spreading into other zones,” he said. “Bubble and seal measures shall be deployed in areas with factories and worker camps that are at high risk of causing cluster cases, especially in Chachoengsao and Samut Prakan. Each province will provide vaccination, accommodation and other necessities to residents of sealed areas.

“If the situation worsens, the province may consider locking down specific areas for 14 days to stop the outbreak from spreading,” added the premier.

Anutin said that from August, the Public Health Ministry expects to procure 10 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine per month on average and aims to provide 1 million jabs per day.
