Dams threatening Khao Yai’s tigers and Unesco listing, say conservationists

One of the world’s last remaining habitats for Indochinese tigers is being threatened by dam construction in Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai forest complex, the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation said on Friday.

Dams threatening Khao Yai’s tigers and Unesco listing, say conservationists

The foundation warned the forest complex would also be removed from Unesco’s world heritage listing if the construction went ahead.

Brought to the brink of extinction by poaching, Indochinese tigers are the focus of a conservation project in the forest complex, which sprawls over 6,000 square kilometres in eastern Thailand.

However, their habitat is now under threat from government construction of the Khlong Wang Mued and Lam Phraya Tarn reservoirs, said the foundation.

“A picture of tigers taken by a camera trap at Thap Lan-Pang Sida Tiger Conservation Centre on May 7 last year is proof of tigers’ existence in the forest complex,” it said.

The tiger population density in the Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai complex is 0.63 per 100 square kilometres, but the DPKY Tiger Recovery Project wants to double that number by 2026.

“The forest complex, on which hope for the restoration of the tiger population depends, is under threat after the government launched the dam construction,” the foundation said. It added that tiger footprints were reported in the complex at Prachinburi’s Ban Wang Mai on January 18 this year.

“If the construction begins, restoration of the tiger population will not able to meet its target, while Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai forest complex will be delisted as a Unesco world heritage site,” the foundation said.

China opens fourth border gate for Thai fruit

China’s customs authorities on Thursday opened the Dongxing border gate in Guangxi region for fruit imports from Thailand.

The border gate, which is close to Vietnam, was also opened to alleviate congestion at the Mohan, Youyi Guan and Pingxiang border gates, which were initially used for the transportation of fruit from Thailand.

“The opening of the Dongxing border gate is great news for Thai fruit farmers and exporters, especially during the durian season in April and May,” Department of Agriculture’s director-general Phichead Wiriyaphaha said on Friday.

“China is one of the major importers of Thai fruits, ordering up to 22 varieties worth more than Bt100 billion annually,” he said.

In the first four months of this year, Thailand has exported 216,000 tonnes of durian worth more than THB21.6 billion to China.

“Once the Dongxing gate is opened, we expect the export of durian to rise significantly. The department is planning to boost personnel for issuing certificates of quality to speed up the export of fruit,” he said.

Phichead added that China now requires Thai fruits to either come from farms that have been given good agriculture practices or GAP certification or processed at good manufacturing practices (GMP) certified facilities.

“The General Administration of Customs of China [GACC] website lists 38,757 plantations and 1,587 food-processing facilities that can export fruit to China,” he said. “This marks a significant increase from the 30,076 plantations approved in 2020.”

Samut Prakan resident dies at home after brother tests positive for Covid

The Ruamkatanyu Rescue Foundation was called on Friday to pick up the body of a man who had died in his house on Thepaharak Road in Samut Prakan’s Phraeksa area the night before, a source said.

Neighbours told rescuers that a family of four lived in the house – two brothers and their elderly parents.

“The eldest son works at a pub in Bangkok’s Thonglor area and had been infected with Covid-19 earlier. He had been taken to hospital for treatment,” said neighbour Anant (last name withheld).

“However, no public health officers visited the house to test and treat the rest of the family.

“On April 27, the bedridden 70-year-old father died from an unknown cause, and three days later the younger son also died,” Anant added.

“The neighbours believe both died of Covid-19 and the mother, who is about 65, is also infected.”

The body has been delivered to the Thepharak District Hospital for an autopsy, and the mother was also taken there for testing and subsequent treatment. The house and its immediate vicinity have been sealed off and will be disinfected.
