PETALING JAYA: An AirAsia employee has been called in by the police for posting a video on social media lamenting the poor hygiene standards at KLIA2.

AirAsia head of communications Mohd Aziz Laikar posted a video on Twitter Monday (Dec 24) showing a rubbish bin filled with maggots at KLIA2, questioning a “fancy statement” by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) boasting its performance in airport management for the month of October.

“@MY_Airports today issued a fancy statement saying KLIA & #klia2 had exceeded the service quality targets of #Mavcom’s Quality of Service (QoS) framework.

“Here is a video of termites at a rubbish can located at gate p6 this morning while there was a departure to Perth,” Aziz wrote, later clarifying that they were maggots and not termites.

“The police said the words that I used hurt the image of MAHB. That’s the word used. The report is based on my alleged intention to hurt MAHB’s image.

“These are all the facts available, and I can only give more information once I meet the police on Wednesday with AirAsia’s lawyers. I have informed the top management of the report and they have expressed solidarity with me,” Aziz told the MalayMail.

AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes condemned the issue, labelling it “ridiculous and sad”.

“It isn’t the first time we’ve been reported for speaking the truth, they have always resorted to a culture of bullying and threatening and we do not condone to that.

“If they are against being transparent, makes me wonder what else they are trying to hide They could’ve responded with a kind resolution when the report was made on the maggots but they chose to be defensive and offensive,” Fernandes said on his Facebook page.

He added that AirAsia “will not back down” any more and that the truth always prevails.

The airline has had a contentious relationship with MAHB over the years.

AirAsia has complained repeatedly about what is claims is poor airport maintenance by MAHB.

More recently, the budget airline took issue with MAHB increasing the passenger service charge (PSC) from RM50 to RM73, stating that the fee should not be the same for both KLIA and the low-cost terminal of KLIA2.

MAHB issued legal letters to both AirAsia and its long-haul unit, AirAsia X Bhd (AAX), in October to demand payment of outstanding PSC for international departures since July 1, according to a report from The Edge.

AirAsia has accrued around RM9.4mil in unpaid PSC while AAX was hit with a lawsuit seeking RM26.72mil for similar arrears.

MANILA, Philippines — “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa has emerged from the sea and crashed a wedding in Hawaii.

While on a holiday trip with friends, Momoa made a spontaneous appearance in a couple’s wedding photo shoot at the beachside.

“We were taking our wedding photos after the ceremony out on the rocks and Jason Momoa and some of his family and some friends just all walked out on the beach,” the bride Katie Meyers said as quoted by an E! News report last Friday.

“They were shouting congratulations to us and they were super calm and super chill,” she added.

According to the couple’s wedding coordinator Carina Cooper, the newlyweds’ photographer asked Momoa to photobomb the pair’s wedding photos and the “Aquaman” actor was more than willing to partake in their special day.

“He happily agreed to photobomb them! There just happened to be a kid on the beach nearby with that trident (in the pic) and Jason asked to borrow it. So he took the trident and went behind the couple in their picture and pretended to be a sasquatch,” Cooper said as quoted by the same report.

In an Instagram post, Cooper shared moments from the impromptu wedding photoshoot with Momoa captioned: “Best wedding crasher ever! Thanks for being so awesome!”

The Jakarta governor has announced that the capital will be paying for the medical and funeral costs of Jakartans who were killed in the Sunda Strait tsunami that hit the Anyer coast in Banten province on Saturday evening.

“The Jakarta administration will take care of the hospital bills of victims [who are Jakarta residents],” Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan announced on Sunday at city-owned Tarakan hospital in Cideng, Central Jakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.

He urged the victims’ families not to worry about the costs.

By Sunday, 56 Jakartans were reported among the hundreds of tsunami victims, 54 of whom are employees of the Tarakan hospital cooperative.

“There are currently 11 injured victims undergoing treatment, 18 victims are on the way to the hospital and 10 fatal victims. Five bodies have already been returned to their families; the five other bodies are still at the hospital. We are still searching for other victims,” said Anies.

Anies added that the city administration had sent ambulances to the disaster areas and was awaiting for further requests for aid and assistance. A team of Jakarta DIsaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) personnel and firefighters from the Jakarta Fire Department (Damkar) had been sent to assist in recovery efforts, he said.

Latest : Hunt for survivors as Indonesian tsunami death toll tops 280

Breaking News December 24, 2018 14:03

By AFP

Carita, Indonesia – Indonesian rescuers raced to find survivors Monday after a volcano-triggered tsunami killed at least 281 people, with experts warning the devastated region could be slammed by more deadly waves.

Rescue teams used their bare hands, diggers and other heavy equipment to haul debris from the stricken area around the Sunda Strait, as thousands were evacuated to higher ground.

The powerful tsunami struck without any warning on Saturday night, sweeping over popular beaches of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java and inundating tourist hotels and coastal settlements.

More than 1,000 people were injured and the death toll “will continue to rise”, said disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave that left a tangled mess of corrugated steel roofing, timber and rubble at Carita beach, a popular spot for day-trippers on the west coast of Java.

“The military and police are searching the ruins to see if we can find more victims,” said Dody Ruswandi, a senior official at the disaster agency, adding that the rescue effort was likely to last a week.

In devastated Sukarame village, Sunarti waded through knee-deep water as she searched for belongings outside her destroyed house — and waited for aid to arrive.

“There’s been no help at all so far,” the 61-year-told AFP from the flattened hamlet.

“Some people are starving.”

Indonesian president Joko Widodo visited the area Monday.

It was the third major natural disaster to strike Indonesia in the space of six months, following a series of powerful earthquakes on the island of Lombok in July and August and a quake-tsunami in September that killed around 2,200 people in Palu on Sulawesi island, with thousands more missing and presumed dead.

The vast archipelago nation is one of the most disaster-prone nations on Earth due to its position straddling the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide.

– ‘Saw the water coming’ –

Experts say Saturday’s tsunami was likely triggered by a massive underwater landslide following an eruption of the Anak Krakatoa volcano in the Sunda Strait.

Unlike those caused by earthquakes, which trigger alert systems, such tsunamis give authorities very little time to warn residents of the impending threat.

“It happened very quickly,” said survivor Ade Junaedi.

“I was chatting with a guest at our place when my wife opened the door and she suddenly screamed in panic. I thought there was a fire, but when I walked to the door I saw the water coming.”

Richard Teeuw, a geohazard expert from the University of Portsmouth in England, said the eruption and landslide may well have destabilised the volcano, heightening the risk of another tsunami.

“The likelihood of further tsunamis in the Sunda Strait will remain high while Anak Krakatoa volcano is going through its current active phase because that might trigger further submarine landslides,” Teeuw said.

Dramatic video posted on social media showed a wall of water suddenly crashing into a concert by pop group “Seventeen” — hurling band members off the stage and then flooding into the audience.

Two band members were killed along with its manager, while three others, including the lead singer’s wife, are missing.

Front man Riefian Fajarsyah posted a picture online of he and his wife kissing in Paris with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

“Today is your birthday — I want wish you a happy birthday in person. Come home soon, honey,” he wrote in the caption of the photo, which was posted Sunday.

Anak Krakatoa, which forms a small island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, emerged around 1928 in the crater left by Krakatoa, whose massive eruption in 1883 killed at least 36,000 people and affected global weather patterns for years.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the “powerful waves” reached a height of 30-90 centimetres (1-3 feet).

Oxfam and other international aid agencies said they would help in the aftermath, as local rescuers evacuated the injured and set up tarpaulins to provide shelter.

Ex-Cabinet colleague says Prayut unfit to be the PM

THE PRIME MINISTER and a pro-junta political party are on the defensive, amid increased criticism and scrutiny of a pro-junta party in the run-up to the general election.

PM General Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday rejected allegations of nepotism and abuse of power by his former Cabinet member, MR Pridiyathorn Devakula, according to Government Spokesman Buddhipong Punnakanta.

“The prime minister rejects all forms of corruption and he has ordered strict punishment for any wrongdoings, regardless of the wrongdoers,” Buddhipong said.

“He is not affected by any attempts to malign him and is still determined to serve the country and the people.”

Pridiyathorn is a former governor of the Bank of Thailand who had served as deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs in the Prayut government’s first Cabinet.

In a personal post yesterday, Pridiyathorn alleged that Phalang Pracharat Party was set up to pave the way for General Prayut to retain political power. He also accused the government of grabbing an unfair advantage over other political parties by wooing votes using the state budget and handout projects.

Pridiyathorn outlined eight reasons why he did not want General Prayut to return as prime minister after the election. These included the junta chief’s indecisiveness, his aggressiveness and lack of manners. He mentioned that Prayut was once referred to as “a clown” by foreign media.

The government spokesman said yesterday that Pridiyathorn’s allegations were inaccurate due to his mistaken understanding over the matters in his list.

Deputy Premier and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan yesterday said Pridiyathorn’s allegations were baseless and originated from his “personal dislike” of certain government figures.

“He doesn’t like some people personally,” General Prawit said, adding that the dislike developed after Pridiyathorn left the post-coup government.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission (EC) is investigating allegations involving the pro-junta Phalang Pracharat regarding a recent fundraising dinner and the issuance of government welfare cards in exchange for party memberships.

EC secretary-general Jarungvith Phumma said yesterday that he expected the results of the investigation to be |available within 30 to 60 days.

Jarungvith said the agency did not discuss the issue related to the welfare card and Phalang Pracharat Party yesterday. However, the investigation is underway with EC deputy secretary-general Dusadee Pornsuksawas looking into the matter, he said.

Because the action could be viewed as evidence in a video clip, the EC could immediately take the matter into its hands without anybody having to file a complaint, Jarungvith said.

The EC is also looking into a previously reported matter of Phalang Pracharat allegedly collecting people’s ID cards, the official said.

Regarding the controversial fundraising dinner by Phalang Pracharat, Jarungvith said the party was preparing to clarify the source of the donations. It has 30 days after receiving the money to do so, he added.

General Prayut said yesterday during his visit to Nonthaburi province that welfare cards are issued by the government and not by politicians. He added that there were attempts to portray this project as political.

Earlier, a video clip posted on social media showed people claiming that they had been forced to apply for membership of Phalang Pracharat in order to get their welfare cards, which entitled them to certain handouts and benefits.

Thai Raksa Chart Party’s key figure, Ruangkrai Leekitwattana, yesterday said such an act was against the law and was liable to a penalty, including the possibility of the violating party being disbanded.

Prawit said a man who told villagers in Yasothon on Saturday that they needed to apply for membership of Phalang Pracharat to get their welfare cards had been arrested and questioned. “We still don’t know if he is a party figure or a member of an anti-government group,” he told reporters.

Yasothon Governor Nikorn Suksai told a press conference yesterday that this matter could have been caused by a misunderstanding.

He said officials distributed welfare cards to eligible local residents at a temple in Loeng Nok Tha district on Saturday. On the following day, a political party held its activity at the same location, he added.

“The local EC office is seeking facts about the claim of party membership in exchange for welfare cards,” the governor said.

In a related development, Phalang Pracharat deputy spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana claimed the party has come under attack because it has gained much support from the public due to its attractive policy platforms.

2,746 candidates in running for Senate seats

The Election Commission revealed on Monday that 2,746 Senate candidates had made the cut from the provincial to the national level after voting last Saturday.

Of the candidates, 2,116 were male and 630 female. The provinces with the most number of successful candidates were Bangkok (74), Nakhon Ratchasima (57), Ratchaburi (56), Pathum Thani (53) and Songkhla (52), according to EC secretary-general Jarungvith Phumma.

Jarungvith also reported that Bungkan, Singburi, Chumphon and Nakhon Nayok were the five provinces with the least number of successful candidates.

These candidates had been voted in the process called cross-election involving 10 groups of professional guilds.

The Senate under the Constitution represents these professional groups. Previously, the senators were independent individuals running in an election. The Constitution writers decided to change that, arguing that a normal election essentially made them politicians and no different from members of Parliament.

The semi-final round will take place on Thursday and the final number of candidates will be reduced to 200.

Those getting the most number of votes will be scrutinised again by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), which will only pick 50 people out of these to become senators.

The Senate, however, will comprise 250 members. Six will come from the military top brass and police chief who will be ex-officio members. The balance 194 senators will be handpicked by the NCPO.

Khon Kaen teacher found dead in apparent car suicide in Chaiyaphum

national December 25, 2018 10:41

By The Nation

A 35-year-old teacher was found dead in her car in Chaiyaphum province in an apparent suicide on Monday.

In her suicide note, Kathleeya Mukmalee asked police to be careful when releasing the details of her death as it was considered a bad example for others and some may try to copy her suicide.

Pol Colonel Niwat Kamwong, deputy investigator of Nong Sang police station, was alerted by Kangkro district residents of a suspicious car having been parked in a sugar cane plantation for quite some time.

Police cordoned off the area to prevent a large crowd of people gathering at the scene. They found a Nissan with Bangkok licence plate whose doors were locked and windows tightly closed.

Inside they found a woman sitting in the driver’s seat curled up under a blanket.

The rescue team had to break a door to get the body out. Initial checks found no trace of assault and that she died about seven hours earlier.

The cause of her death was still unconfirmed but initial suspicion was that she suffocated because the car’s doors and windows were tightly closed and the car was parked under a strong sun.

Police found she carried a government official’s identity card showing she was a teacher at a school in Khon Kaen’s Nong Rua district.

She also gave her family’s telephone numbers in her suicide note so that police could contact them. Her relatives told police that she had suffered from a major depressive disorder related to family problems.

She drove her car from her house in Nong Rua at about 5am on Monday. Her relatives had tried without success to contact her by phone. They learnt of her death from police.

An inmate died while another was injured shortly after midnight on Tuesday after they tried to escape over the electric fence of a prison in Surat Thani province.

However police are hunting for a third inmate who succeeded in climbing over the fence of the Chaiya prison and disappeared in the darkness.

Police were alerted after the attempted break at about half-past midnight.

The dead prisoner was identified as Niwat Aksornsom and his body was found on the fence, while Chatchai Nakchatree was injured. Inmate Jirayu Leekpai escaped.

Security authorities are asking for the public to alert them if they see the prisoner. He was wearing the prison uniform at the time of the escape: a T-shirt with short sleeves, shorts and slippers.

Surat Thani police chief Pol Maj-General Apichart Boonsrirote said road checkpoints have been set up on all possible routes and his officers are searching Jirayu’s family homes.

RECKLESS DRIVERS TO UNDERGO BLOOD TESTS THIS NEW YEAR PERIOD

DRIVERS suspected to be drunk will be forced to undergo blood tests for alcohol especially during the festive period.

The Transport Ministry and Road Safe Fund have earmarked Bt69 million to cover these tests, as drunk driving has been found to be one of the most common causes of road casualties.

The World Health Organisation’s recent report on road-safety revealed that Thailand has as many as 60 road deaths daily. The fatalities are in addition to a much larger number of victims getting injured and maimed on the roads.

“Blood-alcohol concentration tests aim to ensure that drunk drivers are prosecuted,” Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said yesterday.

He issued this warning as the government prepares a major road-safety campaign during the New Year holidays.

Since millions of people hit the road during the festive period, the risk of road accidents increase. In recent years, Thailand has been designating seven days of the New Year period as “Dangerous Days” to remind road users that they need to be careful.

This year, the seven dangerous days run from December 27 to January 2. Blood-alcohol concentration tests during the seven dangerous days associated with New Year 2018 found that nearly 60 per cent of the drivers exceeded the safe blood-alcohol level.

Drivers involved in accidents could be asked by police to undergo a blood test, said assistant National Police chief Pol Lt-General Damrongsak Kitti-prapatr.

“If they refuse, they will be considered as driving drunk,” he said.

Meanwhile, Thai Health Promotion Foundation’s manager Supreeda Adulyanon called on people to refrain from giving gifts of alcohol for New Year.

Public Health Ministry’s permanent secretary, Sukhum Karnchanapimai said more than 166,000 staff will be on duty to provide emergency medical services during the holiday period. “They will be based at 8,583 units with support from 20,741 vehicles,” he added.

Piyasakol, meanwhile, said people could call the 1669 hotline for urgent medical help. “Our team should be able to reach victims within 10 minutes in at least 80 per cent of the cases,” he said.

The quicker victims reach medical workers, the better chance they have of surviving and avoiding disabilities, he said.

Cannabis growers will be given guidelines: Prajin

national December 25, 2018 01:00

By The Nation

FARMERS planning to grow cannabis once it is legalised for medical and research purposes next month have been told to contact authorities.

“Interested persons should start studying relevant information on how to select cannabis varieties, prepare hothouses and control the temperature,” Justice Minister ACM Prajin Juntong said yesterday.

He said the Office of Narcotics Control Board, the Public Health Ministry and the Education Ministry would provide farmers with information.

“Contact these authorities for training,” he recommended.

The National Legislative Assembly is currently deliberating a draft on the legalisation of medical marijuana, and Prajin said he expects the law to go into effect next month.

He said that once the law is introduced, farmers will get an even clearer guideline on where to grow cannabis.

“But as of now, everyone can rest assured that Thailand and its people will benefit from the legalisation of medical marijuana,” he said.

Civic organisations have recently cried foul after discovering that all cannabis-related patent applications filed with the Intellectual Property Department, so far, had come from foreigners.

Some have wondered whether the authorities’ push for legalisation of medical marijuana is intended to grant monopolies to pharmaceutical companies that are already producing marijuana-based drugs. Thais have not yet had an opportunity to seek patients, because cannabis continues being classified as an illegal drug.

Prajin insisted that the Commerce Ministry will soon provide clear solutions on the patent issues.

He pointed out that relevant authorities would also allow the use of marijuana for traditional Thai medicine and for alternative medicine, and not just limit it to modern medicine.

“Interested manufacturers must seek permits. They must have clear production plans too,” he said.

According to Prajin, relevant authorities will also strictly control cannabis farming and destroy excess output.
