As clear as glass: even those with dry skin can achieve a smooth, glowing look

All the rage in South Korea and growing in popularity in Thailand, “glass skin” in the term used to describe facial skin so smooth, glowing and pore-less that it’s as “clear as glass”. The trend is likely to spread even further next year thanks to the advent of new technology in skin hydrating injectables this year. Here’s how to achieve the look.

As we age, our skin undergoes two important changes – loss of elasticity and loss of hydration. These changes cause our skin to become drier and the pores become more visible. One effective way to combat and slow these effects of ageing is to restore hyaluronic acid to the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in skin that keeps it hydrated and youthful. With age, our hyaluronic acid decreases and that’s where treatment comes in.

Current synthesized hyaluronic acid or HA is designed to come in soft, small molecules and viscous liquidity. A dermatologist will administer tiny droplets of this hyaluronic acid into the dermis or just under the dermis using a serial puncture technique. This technique allow the HA to disperse evenly in the dermis. HA will provide hydration and stimulate new collagen, resulting in firmness, luminosity and potentially reduced pore size. It will improve overall skin quality and enhance the “glass skin” appearance as well.

A recent study published in the journal “Dermatology Times” revealed a 91-per-cent satisfaction rate among treated patients in clinical trials. It’s said that patients like the long-term result (approximately up to 9 months) as well as the idea of internal moisturizer for smoothness, hydration and texture. However, if you want to achieve smoother, dewier and more glowing skin, it is important to only visit clinics with dermatologists highly trained in this treatment.

Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Open, one of the most highly regarded events in the region, will make a welcome return to the Asian Tour schedule from March 5 to 8, 2020, following a four-year hiatus, officials announced today.

The highly acclaimed event is the flagship event for the Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) where the upcoming edition will be sanctioned by the Asian Tour in partnership with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO). The Malaysian Open 2020 will offer a prize purse of USD$1,000,000 and will be held at the award-winning Kota Permai Golf and Country Club, which last staged the National Open of Malaysia in 2008.

Inaugurated in 1962 and boosting a new tagline ‘Pride, Passion, Prominence‘, the prestigious Malaysian Open has crowned many notable champions which include the likes of former world number ones Vijay Singh (1992 and 2001) and Lee Westwood (1997 and 2014), who have both won the tournament twice.

A host of past winners such as Thai stars Thongchai Jaidee and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Korea’s Noh Seung-yul, India’s Arjun Atwal and Anirban Lahiri have also gone on to lift the coveted Asian Tour Order of Merit crowns following their victories in the storied event.

Lahiri won the last edition in 2015 for his sixth Asian Tour title and first on the European Tour while Atwal, who recorded the tournament’s lowest winning score with a 24-under-par 260 total in 2003, emerged victorious at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club in 2008.

“The Malaysian Open is arguably the most prestigious and long-standing professional golf event in the region. It has provided a platform for Malaysian professional golfers and amateurs ample opportunities to compete against some of the best players from around the world, such as Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Louis Oouisthuizen, Thongchai Jaidee, Lee Westwood, Ernie Els and Charles Schwartzel,” said MGA President, Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor.

Tan Sri Anwar further added: “For the 2020 edition, 40 slots will be offered to our local players, comprising 30 slots reserved for eligible Malaysian professionals and 10 slots for Malaysian amateurs made up of national players and top Malaysian juniors.  We hope that our Malaysian players will take this opportunity to train hard to compete with their peers from the Asian and Japan Tours and vie for the top honours in this Championship”.

Cho Minn Thant, Asian Tour Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, lauded the return of the Malaysian Open on the Asian Tour. “The Malaysian Open is one of the oldest National Opens in the region and we are excited and honoured to welcome the storied event back into our fold.

“I would like to express our gratitude to the Malaysian Golf Association for their outstanding support of the game at the highest level in Asia. The tournament’s return to our schedule is a massive boost for the Tour as we continue to strive in promoting professional golf across Asia.

“Malaysia has always been a key market for the Asian Tour. The return of the country’s National Open will not only inspire a new generation of Malaysian golfers but also create further opportunities for our members to showcase their talents,” said Cho.

The Malaysian Open has featured prominently on the annual Asian Tour schedule from 1999 to 2015. It also became the first event to be co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the European Tour in 1999.

Other notable past winners include Chinese Taipei’s Lu Chien-soon (1984) and Yeh Wei-tze (2000), American Anthony Kang (2009), Italian Matteo Manassero (2011) and Louis Oosthuizen (2012) of South Africa.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Thailand National Sports University (TNSU) are to collaborate on integrating the junior NBA basketball and fitness development curriculum into TNSU’s education module for aspiring teachers.

This collaboration builds on the NBA’s association with local governments to promote youth health and wellness, highlights the vital role sports plays in youth development and sets out to elevate the level of youth basketball.

As part of the collaboration, TNSU will adopt the Jr NBA curriculum within its syllabus, giving its professors access to the NBA’s youth basketball and general fitness training methods as a teaching tool to help develop future physical education teachers. The curriculum, a bespoke training manual designed to improve the youth sport experience for players at every level skill level, will be supplemented by a library of more than 300 instructional videos.

Additionally, the NBA will conduct a series of workshops for TNSU professors with a focus on basketball fundamentals, refereeing and coaching to further enhance their basketball knowledge and encourage participation among their students.

The Jr NBA curriculum and instructional videos will be accessible to TNSU professors on jrnba.asia and on the Jr NBA Coaches Academy application on the App Store and Google Play Store.

“The Thailand National Sports University is proud to collaborate with the NBA to jointly improve health and wellness of Thai children through basketball,” said Pariwat Wannaklang, [resident of Thailand National Sports University. “Our institute places tremendous importance to sports education, and the Jr NBA curriculum will help enhance our syllabus and train the next generation of teachers.”

“We thank the TNSU for adopting the Jr NBA curriculum for its syllabus,” said Jim Wong, NBA Asia Associate Vice President of Global Partnerships. “Teachers play a critical role in the development of children, and this endorsement by the TNSU will empower future educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to help create a lasting impact on Thai youth through basketball.”

Since its launch in 2014, the Jr NBA Thailand program has reached more than one million boys and girls across the country, teaching the fundamentals of basketball and the programme’s core values of sportsmanship, teamwork, a positive attitude, and respect. The Jr NBA Coaches Academy – the programme’s government-supported train-the-trainers initiative which aims to further local development by establishing standards for how the sport should be coached and enjoyed – has trained thousands of teachers from more than 2,000 schools in 15 cities across Thailand, with stops in Ang Thong, Bangkok, Had Yai, Lampang and Udon Thani.

The Jr NBA, the league’s global youth basketball participation programme for boys and girls, has reached more than 51.5 million youth in 75 countries through league play, in-school programming, clinics, skills challenges, and other outreach events.

Uber Technologies beat back an aggressive bid to force it to treat California drivers as employees, but a judge’s ruling may allow a long-running fight over pay and benefits to gain traction in 2020.

U.S. District Judge Edward Chen declined Monday to order Uber to instantly convert drivers in its home state from contractors to employees based on an argument that it’s cheating not just workers but also the public at large.

But the San Francisco judge also refused to throw out the case, an early test of a California law aimed at gig economy companies that’s set to take effect Jan. 1. In what may turn out to be a significant threat to Uber’s business model, Chen concluded that the case presents “a plausible claim that any misclassification by Uber is willful.” Uber declined to comment on the ruling.

AB 5, signed by California Governor Gavin Newsom in September, says workers can generally only be considered contractors if they perform duties outside the usual course of a company’s business. Legal experts say the law weakens Uber’s argument that its drivers are independent contractors, and even the company acknowledges the law creates a higher hurdle.

Shannon Liss-Riordan, the lawyer representing the drivers and a longtime Uber nemesis, argued that AB 5 was passed in order to stop Uber and the rest of the gig economy from misclassifying its workers. Liss-Riordan had no immediate comment on the ruling

Chen said it’s premature to order Uber to immediately reclassify its California drivers given that arbitration agreements they signed barring them from pursuing their grievances in court will likely diminish the number who would benefit, which the judge said is still “ill-defined.”

But he refused Uber’s request to dismiss the complaint, finding the driver who filed it “could form the basis” of a lawsuit based on the 2018 Dynamex decision by California’s highest court. The ruling applies a more straightforward test to determine which workers qualify for employee status and the attendant benefits.

Legal experts widely agree that test, especially as codified by AB 5, will make it much harder for Uber to continue to deny California drivers benefits including business expense reimbursements that would ordinarily be available to employees.

The case is Colopy v. Uber Technologies Inc., 19-cv-06462, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California (San Francisco).

Chicago-based aerospace manufacturer Boeing will halt production of its new 737 Max commercial jetliner in January, Boeing announced Monday.

There are no layoffs associated with the production cut, a person familiar with the decision said.

The production cut caps off a financially disastrous year for Boeing’s commercial airplanes division. The 737 Max, Boeing’s newest commercial jet, was grounded worldwide in March after a software problem played a role in two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia. The company has been waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration to approve a software fix, but the approval timeline has been repeatedly pushed back.

“We believe this decision is least disruptive to maintaining long-term production system and supply chain health,” the company’s statement reads.

“This decision is driven by a number of factors, including the extension of certification into 2020, the uncertainty about the timing and conditions of return to service and global training approvals, and the importance of ensuring that we can prioritize the delivery of stored aircraft. We will continue to assess our progress towards return to service milestones and make determinations about resuming production and deliveries accordingly.”

The company’s announcement did not say how long the production halt would last. Although no furloughs of Boeing’s workers were announced, hundreds of companies supply parts for the Max and would be affected by the decision.

Some White House officials had hoped that there would be a bump in economic growth if Boeing was able to quickly solve its problems. Boeing’s stock dropped $14.67 to $327 by the end of trading Monday, following reports that the company was expected to suspend production of the Max. Shares of Boeing Co. stock are down 10% over the past three months.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in August told CNBC that “problems” with the 737 Max had been big enough to shave 0.4% off the entire U.S. gross domestic product for a period this year. He said he expected an uptick when the problems were fixed, but it’s unclear what the impact might be if production is completely halted.

The Boeing planes have been grounded worldwide since the March 10 crash of an Ethiopian Airlines flight. It was the second crash involving a 737 Max in less than five months. In all, 346 people died in the tragedies.

Last week, a former senior manager at Boeing said he repeatedly warned company executives about production issues at the Renton, Washington, factory where the jets were being built, but his recommendations to shut down production were rebuffed.

“The factory did not have enough skilled employees, specifically mechanics, electricians and technicians to keep up with the backlog of work,” said Edward Pierson, in remarks prepared for a hearing Wednesday before the House Transportation Committee. “I witnessed numerous instances where manufacturing employees failed to communicate effectively between shifts, often leaving crews to wonder what work was properly completed.”

In October, a group of international and American aviation safety experts identified broad failures in the design and oversight of the jet’s production, including that government regulators had “inadequate awareness” of an automated system that contributed to two deadly crashes. The report by the Joint Authorities Technical Review panel said communication breakdowns, bureaucracy and staffing disparities meant that key government safety personnel did not know enough about the power of the automated feature until after tragedy struck.

Both Boeing and the FAA had deemed the now-grounded planes safe as part of a years-long certification process.

Investors who couldn’t access money in cryptocurrency exchange after CEO’s death want body exhumed

Investors who couldn’t access money in cryptocurrency exchange after CEO’s death want body exhumed

Dec 17. 2019

When Canada’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, QuadrigaCX, announced the death of its co-founder and CEO, Gerald Cotten, in January, condolences flooded in from around the world.

The company said Cotten, 30, had been nine days into his honeymoon in India, where he planned to open an orphanage, when he collapsed due to complications of Crohn’s disease.

But soon the words of support and sympathy were replaced by panicked messages from investors: Where was their money?

As it turned out, only Cotten knew the passwords to the digital wallets where cryptocurrency was stored, meaning that more than 100,000 users were unable to access at least $145 million in assets, according to Bloomberg News. As months passed and the money failed to materialize, a conspiracy theory emerged: Cotten had faked his own death and disappeared.

Now attorneys for QuadrigaCX’s investors are asking that Cotten’s body be exhumed, so that they can settle the question of whether he is really dead.

A Friday letter from Miller Thomson LLP, the Toronto firm appointed to represent QuadrigaCX users, requests that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police also conduct an autopsy on Cotten’s body, “to confirm both its identity and the cause of death.” Citing the “questionable circumstances” surrounding Cotten’s sudden passing, the attorneys note “the need for certainty around the question of whether Mr. Cotten is in fact deceased.”

As Vanity Fair reported, QuadrigaCX initially attracted users because it seemed less risky than other bitcoin trading platforms. It had been licensed by FinTRAC, the Canadian anti-money-laundering task force, and Cotten often told reporters that the fact that the exchange was based in Canada meant that investors “know where their money is going.”

But the Facebook post announcing Cotten’s death raised questions, as The Washington Post reported. Though he died in December 2018, according to his widow, it took more than a month for the cryptocurrency exchange to reveal that he had passed away. When the company finally made it public and users scrambled to withdraw their money, QuadrigaCX’s website went dark.

The company used a “cold wallet” system where cryptocurrency like bitcoin and ethereum was stored offline to protect it from hackers, and Cotten was the only person with the ability to transfer users’ money back into a “hot wallet” where they could access it. In February, when QuadrigaCX filed for creditor protection, the company said that it had been unable to unlock the “cold wallets,” leaving millions in limbo.

“The laptop computer from which Gerry carried out the companies’ business is encrypted and I do not know the password or recovery key,” Cotten’s widow, Jennifer Robertson, said in court filings, according to the Guardian. “Despite repeated and diligent searches, I have not been able to find them written down anywhere.”

Many customers became convinced that they were not simply unlucky, but instead were the victims of a sinister scheme. As online sleuths pointed out, $25 million of QuadrigaCX’s assets were frozen in early 2018, after authorities found “irregularities” in the company’s payment processes. Just days before Cotten died, however, the funds were returned to the company.

Investors started to question “the authenticity of the formal documents in a country notorious for the ease at which falsified documents can be purchased, particularly after they learned that the death certificate misspelled Cotten’s name, and that the former chairman and managing director of the company that ran the hospital had been convicted of financial fraud two months earlier,” Vanity Fair reported. Just four days before the trip, the magazine noted, Cotten had written a will.

No evidence has emerged to prove that Cotten’s death was faked. In February, his widow, who provided Canadian authorities with a copy of his death certificate, called the rumors “slanderous.”

But in recent months, the FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police have launched investigations into investors’ missing funds. Meanwhile, in April, QuadrigaCX began bankruptcy proceedings in Canada, and the accounting firm Ernst & Young was tasked with investigating the company’s finances and tracking down the millions that disappeared.

So far, auditors have recovered only about $33 million in Canadian dollars, the equivalent of more than $25 million in the United States. Nearly all of that money was cash, and the millions in cryptocurrency remain elusive. What the auditors did uncover, according to a June report, was evidence that funds invested in QuadrigaCX “may have been used inappropriately.”

Cotten, who appears to have overstated the company’s revenue, according to the auditors, reportedly juiced the volume of trades on the platform by creating fake accounts and using them to trade counterfeit bitcoin for real cash and cryptocurrency. He was the only one directing what happened to money that users converted into cryptocurrency, but had kept no records whatsoever since 2016.

Often, the accountants found, Cotten transferred investors’ funds into his own accounts, or used them to “fund personal assets.” He made risky trades on other cryptocurrency exchanges, and the losses began adding up. The firm’s blockchain analysts located some of QuadrigaCX’s cold wallets, only to discover that most of them were empty.

The auditors also found that Cotten and his wife used QuadrigaCX to fund a jet-setting lifestyle, buying 16 properties in Nova Scotia, a Cessna 400 plane and a yacht. According to the Globe and Mail, Robertson has said that she was unaware of her husband’s questionable financial dealings, and agreed to transfer the majority of her assets to Ernst & Young so that they can be liquidated.

The ongoing investigations have been complicated by the complex, highly technical nature of cryptocurrency. One expert who was interviewed by the RCMP told Vanity Fair that he had been shocked by the investigators’ unfamiliarity with bitcoin, and felt the case was “completely out of their wheelhouse.” And after Ernst & Young took control of QuadrigaCX’s finances, the auditors “inadvertently” transferred bitcoin valued at nearly half a million in Canadian dollars to cold wallets that no one could access.

Reporters, meanwhile, have found that Cotten had a history of questionable financial dealings, dating to when he was a 15-year-old computer whiz living in suburban Ontario. The teenager launched a site that was effectively “a bizarre cross between a Ponzi scheme and online gambling,” the Globe and Mail reported, only to shut it down as investors began clamoring for their money back. He later claimed to have refunded a significant portion.

Indian authorities maintain that Cotten, whose body was repatriated to Nova Scotia for a small closed-casket funeral, died on Dec. 9, 2018, shortly after checking into a luxury hotel in Jaipur and complaining of stomach pains. He was taken to a private hospital and initially appeared to have traveler’s diarrhea, officials told the Globe and Mail. But the next day, his condition took a turn for the worse, and he went into cardiac arrest.

Medical experts told the Globe and Mail that while dying from Crohn’s disease is extremely rare, it was possible that Cotten could have suffered from a perforated bowel and gone into septic shock. But the gastroenterologist who treated Cotten in India told the paper that no autopsy was completed, and he was “not at all” certain about what had happened.

Attorneys for QuadrigaCX’s customers have asked that Cotten’s body be exhumed before spring 2020, “given decomposition concerns.” The request appears likely to spark a legal battle, as Robertson, his widow, told Canadian media outlets in a statement through her attorney that she was “heartbroken” by the possibility and that her husband’s death “should not be in doubt.”

“It is not clear how the exhumation or an autopsy to confirm the cause of Gerry’s death from complications arising from his Crohn’s disease would assist the asset recovery process further,” she wrote.
