‘Avatar 2’ becomes fastest 2022 release to reach $1 billion global box office sales

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2022

James Cameron’s long-awaited “Avatar” sequel has become the fastest 2022 film to smash $1 billion in global sales at the box office in just 14 days since its release in mid-December, according to the entertainment industry website Variety.com.

Avatar: The Way of Water” has beaten both “Top Gun: Maverick” which took 31 days in May to clear the box office milestone, and “Jurassic World Dominion” released in June which took over four months, according to Variety.

In 2021, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” took just 12 days. Only six movies in history have cleared $1  billion mark in their first two weeks of release.

Studios split ticket sales with theatres, and Cameron has said “The Way of Water” will need to make $2 billion just to break even. Disney has not disclosed the budget and marketing costs.

“The Way of Water” fell short of ticket sales forecasts as it first swept into theatres over the weekend of December 16, racking up roughly $435 million around the globe, distributor Walt Disney Co. said, including $134 million in the United States and Canada.

Pre-weekend predictions called for at least a $140 million domestic tally for Cameron’s decade-in-the-making return to the story of the blue, Na’vi people on a moon called Pandora, and as much as $500 million worldwide.

Box office experts said it was too soon to judge whether the movie would recoup its massive costs.

The movie was released 13 years after the first instalment wowed audiences with pioneering 3D technology. The original “Avatar” remains the all-time box office champion with $2.9 billion in global ticket sales.

The sequel was delayed multiple times as Cameron and co-writers crafted a story to be told over four additional movies. A third “Avatar” instalment and part of a fourth already have been filmed.

In “The Way of Water,” actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana return as Jake Sully and Neytiri 10 years later, now parents of five children. Their peaceful life is interrupted when the Sky People, the Na’vi name for humans, return to go after Jake.

Ten-man Thailand salvaged a 1-1 draw with Indonesia in the 2022 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Championship on Friday in Jakarta to stay top of Group A.

Marc Klok fired Indonesia into the lead in the 48th minute from the penalty spot after Theerathon Bunmathan’s handball earned a yellow card.

Things looked bleak for defending champions Thailand when Sanrawat Dechmitr was shown a straight red for hacking down a home player in the 63rd minute. But the depleted War Elephants roared back with Sarach Yooyen’s strike from the edge of the area with 11 minutes left in the match.

Thailand remain top of Group A with Indonesia in second on goal difference. Cambodia cemented their grip on third place in the group with a 5-1 thrashing of Brunei in Phnom Penh to keep alive hopes of a top-two finish and a place in the semi-finals.

Thailand next play Cambodia at Thammasat University on Monday (kick-off 7.30pm). Fans can watch the match live on MCOT HD30 and T-Sport 7 channels.

Thailand’s manager Mano Polking praised his players for salvaging a draw after going a goal behind and losing one man. He added that the referee had made the right decision in sending off Sanrawat as the tackle clearly deserved a red card.

Pele, the legendary Brazilian soccer player who rose from barefoot poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died on Thursday (December 29) at the age of 82.

Tributes poured in from across the worlds of sport, politics and popular culture for a figure who epitomised Brazil’s dominance of the beautiful game.

“Rest in peace, @pele,” said Argentina captain Lionel Messi on Twitter.

Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo wrote: “The love you always showed me was reciprocated in every moment we shared even from distance. He will never be forgotten and his memory will live forever in each and every one of us football lovers. Rest in peace King Pelé”.

Pele, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, joined Santos in 1956 and turned the small coastal club into one of the most famous names in football. A wake is expected to be held at Santos’ Urbano Caldeira stadium, most commonly known as Vila Belmiro, on Monday (January 2), the club’s press officer said.

THE NATION

Pele, the magical Brazilian soccer star who rose from barefoot poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died at the age of 82, his daughter said on Instagram on Thursday (December 29).

He had been in and out of hospital in recent months after a tumor was found on his colon.

Pele, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, scored a world record 1,281 goals, and is the only player ever to win the World Cup three times.

With sublime skills and a winning smile, he helped make soccer the world’s most popular sport and he charmed popes, presidents and Hollywood stars in a seven-decade career as player and ambassador for the sport.

Born on Oct. 23, 1940, in the small Minas Gerais town of Tres Corações, or “Three Hearts”, Edson Arantes do Nascimento learned the game from his father, a semi-professional player whose promising career was derailed by a knee injury.

Several aspects of his youth are obscured by myth, including the origin of his famous nickname. As Pele (sometimes) told it, he often played as goalkeeper in neighborhood games, and kids began comparing him to a local player named “Bile” – and the letters got twisted over the years.

Whatever the truth, he was soon dazzling scouts not as a goalkeeper but as an attacking forward – a prototype number 10.

He was respected for his range of talents, and more so than any player since, he could do it all: He was two-footed, had tremendous pace and stamina, he could head, pass, tackle – and of course, he could score goals.

He joined Santos at the age of 15 and turned the small coastal club into one of the most famous names in football.

Over a glittering 18-year spell at the club he won every honor in Brazilian football as well as two Copa Libertadores – the South American equivalent of the Champions League – and two Intercontinental Cups, the annual tournament held between the best teams in Europe and South America.

His talent was soon recognized by the national team and he was chosen for the Brazil squad heading to the 1958 World Cup in Sweden – although a team psychologist called the 17-year-old “obviously infantile” and advised against playing him.

Pele went on to score a hat-trick within one half of the semi-final against France, and another two goals in the final against the host Swedish team – helping Brazil to its first-ever championship.

 BrazilBrazil

Injuries kept him out of all but two games in the 1962 Cup, which Brazil won. At the 1970 tournament in Mexico, a now fully mature 29-year-old Pele won the title for a third time with a Brazil side that included other stars such as Carlos Alberto Torres and Tostão, and is considered by many to be the greatest team ever.

Pele initially retired in 1974 but after finding that ill-advised investments had left him broke he accepted an offer the following year to play in the fledgling North American Soccer League for the then-astonishing sum of about $1 million a year.

Pele’s charisma dazzled even hardened New Yorkers. He hobnobbed with celebrities and once shared a table at the famed Studio 54 nightclub with Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart and Andy Warhol – who called Pele the exception to his saying that everyone would have 15 minutes of fame.

Even in such company, Pele stayed away from alcohol and drugs, saying he needed to protect his body and serve as a role model for kids.

He admitted to other “weaknesses,” though. His two divorces, numerous affairs, and the two children he acknowledged fathering outside of marriage fueled perceptions of a gap between the squeaky-clean corporate pitchman and the elusive real-life person who preferred to be called Edson.

On the field, Pele led the New York Cosmos to the league championship in 1977 and attracted millions of fans to a sport that had previously seemed inaccessible and European.

Years later, when the United States won the right to host the 1994 World Cup, the head of the U.S. soccer federation called Pele the “most important” reason why.

Pele’s 1,281 goals in 1,366 games, as tabulated by FIFA’s website, came at a startling rate of 0.94 per match. Some of those were friendlies or came in games played as part of his military service, but he was just as prolific in official tournaments, with 757 goals in 812 games.

Pele had suffered from a series of health issues in recent years, including hip surgery that left him with recurring pain and trouble walking unaided. He reduced his public appearances, but remained active on social media.

Pele is survived by six known children. A seventh, whom he didn’t recognize as his own for years, died of cancer in 2006.

Two Thai films have been named among the best 25 Asian Films of 2022 by asianmoviepulse.com. Sitting at No 15 is “Leio” directed by Chalit Kraileadmongkol and Chitpol Ruanggun.

The film tells the story of Kao (Golf Pichaya Nitipaisankul), a fading pop star who returns to his hometown and joins a contest to drill for groundwater with a winning prize of 1 million baht.

He teams up with Jane (Natthacha De Souza) and cousin Yo (Supachai Suwannaorn) to explore cave tunnels, unaware they hide a mysterious and terrifying beast.

The film earned mixed reviews from Thai viewers but in October, Screen Daily reported that “Leio” will be remade by British production company SC Films International.

Sitting at No 9 is “Fast and Feel Love” directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, whose career spans indie films such as “Mary is Happy” to top-selling mainstream features like “Heart Attack” that filled cinemas with people of all ages.

This late coming-of-age film centres on Kao (Nat Kitcharit) a sport-stacking world champion who is dumped by his long-time girlfriend, Jay (Urassaya Sperbund), and is forced to learn life skills to care for himself.

The film explores childhood dreams and the reality of adulthood as Kao and Jay give up what they love to move on and grow as people.

Both films are now streaming on Netflix.

Mini-bonsai: Delicate, with a powerful presence

Mini-bonsai: Delicate, with a powerful presence

Mini-bonsai: Delicate, with a powerful presence

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

Many people consider bonsai to be an art form only for experts. However, there is a palm-sized type that grows up to 20 centimetres tall and is much easier to care for due to its small size.

Called shohin-bonsai, or mini-bonsai, the plants still convey the delicate, powerful presence of bonsai that is so widely admired. Having a mini-bonsai is an easy way to enrich one’s home.

“There are no fixed rules for bonsai,” said Sachiko Uchida, a bonsai artist who runs the Reijuen bonsai garden in Yokohama’s Naka Ward. “There are many small and lovely mini-bonsai plants. I hope people will enjoy them freely.”

Hailing from Kanagawa Prefecture, Uchida was born in 1975. After training in shohin-bonsai at a bonsai garden in the prefecture, she opened up her own place, Reijuen, in 2021.

She also sells bonsai and holds workshops, including teaching at Yomiuri Culture, which provides cultural and educational courses.

Mini-bonsai are broadly classified into two categories: the shohaku type comprising trees such as pines and cedars, and the zoki miscellaneous type comprising other plants.

The shohaku type is regarded as a typical bonsai. People admire their intriguing appearances while thinking about their respective histories, such as how the bent branches and withered spots came about.

Uchida has a black pine that she curved at its base when it was young, and she has bent it further over the years. You can sense the life force of the tree as you gaze at it.

The zoki miscellaneous type comprises plants that are a pleasure to look at because they, for example, bear fruit and bloom, or their leaves change colour in autumn.

Royagaki (diamond-leaf persimmon) is an ornamental persimmon tree. Its orange-coloured berries are as small as a thumbnail. They grow in clusters and are quite cute.

“Zoki trees change in appearance throughout the year,” Uchida said. “Via [a living thing] in a small pot, you feel the passage of time.”

Bonsai differ from ordinary plants because they are pruned and trained to have a beautiful shape from early in their development, altering their natural growth. Other notable points include the moss that grows at the base of the plant and the pot it is set in.

Mini-bonsai are sold at bonsai gardens and other places, starting at about ¥2,000 ( THB 521 ) .

They are usually grown outdoors under the same conditions as in nature.

“The small plants can be placed on a balcony that gets sunshine, and you don’t have to think too hard about how to grow them,” Uchida said.

Trimming bonsai with tweezers when needles and leaves become discoloured builds attachment to the plant.

“If you have any questions, ask the bonsai garden where you purchased the plant.” Uchida said. “I want people to have fun with bonsai.”

Greening made easy

An easier way to bring nature into your living space than having a small bonsai is to create a koke bokkuri, a pine cone with moss growing between its scales.

To make a koke bokkuri, first wash and thoroughly dry a pine cone. Fill the space between the scales with clay-like soil called keto-tsuchi, and then attach moss clumps one by one to the soil using tweezers. Placing a small seedling with the moss makes for a cute arrangement.

Koke bokkuri are attracting attention recently as enthusiasts post images of their creations on social media. “As it doesn’t have much space for holding soil, the plant tends to weaken. If that happens, put the pine cone in a pot, and it will revive,” Uchida said.

Now that Thailand has opened up to foreign tourists, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts is jumping on the bandwagon by offering a new attraction in Bangkok – the Siam Yacht Club.

Michael Schlueter, general manager of Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel and Tower, told the press earlier this week that the aim is to turn Siam Yacht Club into a signature brand of the hotel.

With its unique menu and drinks created by master chefs and mixologists, as well as an astounding view of the Chao Phraya River, Schlueter reckons the Siam Yacht Club will soon become a key Bangkok attraction. He said it will also serve as a new gathering place for like-minded Bangkokians.

The restaurant, which is set to open in January, has proved to be popular since its soft launch this month, with most tables being reserved daily.

Schlueter said he believes 2023 will be very promising for the tourism and hotel industry, especially with more Indian and Saudi Arabian tourists arriving.

“Siam Yacht Club is a new place to provoke all the senses. It is what it says here: Get ready for a culinary and social experience like no other in Bangkok,” Schlueter said.

Sheraton Hotels & Resorts is part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of hotels in metropolises worldwide.

Siam Yacht Club is part of Sheraton’s new aim to offer everything from public space and food and beverage to flexible meeting spaces.

The restaurant is being opened in time to meet a surge in foreign tourists, especially now that China has decided to lift all travel restrictions and reopen its borders.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand believes Thailand will see more than 18 million tourists next year, generating some 970 billion baht in revenue. This estimate was declared before China announced it was lifting travel restrictions.

Nation Group eyes at least THB730m from rights issue to support expansion

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30, 2022

Nation Group (Thailand) Plc’s board of directors has approved a rights offering of 10,847,920,965 shares at 0.53 baht each, the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) was informed on Friday.

Nation Group is aiming to raise at least 730 million baht from this capital increase, to be used as a revolving fund supporting future business expansion under the One Nation strategy.

The company also notified the SET that its board had approved the purchase of all 20,074,998 shares of Thansettakij Multimedia Company Limited (TMM) from News Network Corporation (NEWS) at 11.96 baht per share in a deal totalling 240 million baht. The decision was made earlier in late November.

The acquisition of Thansettakij secures Nation Group’s ownership of TMM’s print and online media, TV programmes, and events and seminars business.

Nation Group CEO Shine Bunnag said the board approved the capital increase and purchase of Thansettakij’s shares to strengthen the media group, as Thansettakij is acknowledged as a leading media entity in the country.

Nation Group is currently among Thailand’s strongest media organisations with a comprehensive stable of brands including Krungthep Turakij, Nation TV, Post Today, Nation Online, Kom Chad Luek, Spring Online, The Nation, OK Nation, Khob Sanam, The People, and Thansettakij, he said.

“The One Nation strategy highlights the strength of Nation Group. All media are synergized across all aspects: administration, personnel management, content management, and the use of innovation and new technology to produce high-quality news and knowledge to serve the public while adhering tightly to professional journalistic ethics,” said Shine.
