SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022

South Korean striker Cho Gue-sung turned his phone off after he went viral following his team’s second match at the 2022 World Cup last Monday as new fans from around the globe started following him on Instagram.

His Instagram followers had surged almost 10 fold to about 2 million by 2pm Bangkok time on Saturday.

The striker for Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors had just 20,000 followers before South Korea’s opener against Uruguay on November 24.

Cho did not start in that match, which ended in a 0-0 draw. However, in the next match against Ghana on November 28 he scored twice, setting social media aflame around the globe. Cho received countless love letters and marriage proposals for his movie-star looks and prowess on the pitch.

One viral video compares Cho to superstar Park Seo-joon. It has been viewed over 7.7 million times on Twitter.

Korean reporter Seo Jung-hwan said that all the attention was too much for Cho.

Speaking about Cho, Seo told The Athletic: “He had to get some rest. His phone was going all night. It was keeping him awake. He was trying to concentrate on football and, all the time, the messages were coming.”

Cho said after the match against Ghana: “I don’t really want to be famous. I’m only human and don’t feel anything special.”

He has scored six goals in 19 matches for South Korea, with two made in the second match of the World Cup. This puts him in the same league as superstars Lionel Messi, Bruno Fernandes, and Richarlison.

Several European football clubs have reportedly expressed interest in him. South Korea Football Association vice-president Lee Young-pyo said that a sporting director from a “very good club” in Europe asked about Cho.

Despite all the attention, Cho told reporters before the match against Portugal on Friday. “It’s not over yet. We still have hope, we still have one more game. We’ll prepare for that.”

The Korean team won the match (2-1) and will advance to the next round. Cho did not score in the match, but that did not stop the number of his Instagram followers from going through the roof.

No World Cup matches for Thai C-band satellite receivers

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022

People using large satellite dishes to watch TV will not be able to watch the Netherlands-US or Argentina-Australia matches this evening because all signals have been blocked as of Friday.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) told the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) on Saturday that Thailand would encrypt all 2022 FIFA World Cup broadcasts.

The commission made the announcement after SAT blocked broadcasts via C-band satellite TV networks in response to warnings from FIFA. The world football governing body had insisted that all broadcast signals be encrypted as they were being stolen by neighbouring countries.

Trairat Viriyasirikul, NBTC’s acting secretary-general, said on Friday that providers of satellite TV receivers (set-top boxes), digital television multiplexes (DTT MUX) service providers and TV channels have been issued a guideline for encrypting the signal to prevent it from being stolen.

According to the guidelines, set-top boxes will be encrypted with “conditional access”, while KU-band satellite television networks will be locked with an “alternated key encryption”.

DTT MUX service providers are also required to put the signal under conditional access.

However, people using big C-Band satellite dishes will not be able to watch any games as the receiver cannot encrypt the signal.

The NBTC has told all operators to put all controls in place until the end of the competition to tackle the piracy problem.

It has also advised those with C-band satellite receivers to use an antenna or encrypted receivers to watch the matches.

Overjoyed fans celebrated and cheered at FIFA Fan Festival after South Korea beating Portugal on Friday

“I’m so proud of our players. I’m so proud of our country. We won!” said South Korea fan Amin Jung right after Hwang Hee-chan struck a 91st-minute winner to beat Portugal 2-1 in Al Rayyan at the World Cup, a comeback win that sent the Asian side into the last 16 ahead of Uruguay on the number of goals scored.

With the clock ticking down on South Korea’s time in the tournament, striker Son Heung-min ran free after a Portugal corner in added time and slipped a pass to Hwang Hee-chan who fired past Diogo Costa to spark wild celebrations.

After an early opener by Ricardo Horta for Portugal, Kim Young-gwon gave the Koreans hope in the 27th minute when a corner struck Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo on the back and fell kindly for the defender to sweep the ball home.

The last-gasp victory for South Korea catapulted them from fourth to second place in Group H ahead of Uruguay, who beat Ghana 2-0 in the group’s other game but failed to score enough goals to finish above the Asians. Portugal top the group.

South Korea scored a last-gasp goal to beat already-qualified Portugal 2-1 at the World Cup in a comeback win that sent the Asian side into the last 16 ahead of Uruguay on goals scored.

With the clock ticking down on South Korea’s time in the tournament, striker Son Heung-min ran free after a Portugal corner in added time and slipped a pass to Hwang Hee-chan who fired past Diogo Costa to spark wild celebrations.

After the whistle blew, the anxious Korean players gathered in a circle awaiting the end of the Uruguay-Ghana game and exploded with joy when the news arrived that the South Americans had only won 2-0 in their Group H clash.

South Korea had to beat Portugal at the Education City Stadium to stand a chance of going through to the last 16 and their win catapulted them from fourth to second place by virtue of having scored four goals in the tournament to Uruguay’s two.

Portugal finished top despite the loss and should avoid facing likely Group G winners Brazil in the knockout stage.

Winger Ricardo Horta had put Portugal ahead with their first goal attempt in the fifth minute when he found himself inside the box and converted a neat cut-back by defender Diogo Dalot.

The Koreans thought they had levelled in the 17th when a close-range shot by defender Kim Jin-su beat keeper Diogo Costa at his right post but the effort was disallowed for offside.

However, they did manage to equalise 10 minutes later through defender Kim Young-gwon who scored after the ball bounced off Cristiano Ronaldo’s back following a corner.

Ronaldo, seeking a goal to equal Portugal’s overall World Cup record of nine scored by the great Eusebio, had his first chance just after the half-hour mark with a solo effort which Kim Seung-gyu saved and he was in any case offside.

The Portugal captain had another one-on-one with Kim but his effort was too weak to trouble the keeper and he was given a rest in the 65th minute when replaced by striker Andre Silva.

As one of the rarest species of tiger, the white tiger has typical black stripes but carries a white or near-white coat. Their unique white fur has made them popular at zoos worldwide.

There has been an absence of tigers in Bangladesh’s Chattogram zoo of late, with Chandra and Purnima passing away in 2006 and 2012, respectively.

In December 2016, however, two Royal Bengal tigers, Raj and Pori, were brought to the zoo from South Africa.

The zoo, which is located at Bangladesh’s seaport city Chattogram, about 242 km southeast of the capital Dhaka, has since been blessed with four newborn white tiger cubs.

The tiger cubs were born in July this year to the Royal Bengal tiger couple Raj and Pori.

In 2018, Pori gave birth to Shubhra, the first white tiger in Bangladesh.

Officials said the birth of the white cubs was a blessing for the zoo as well as for local and foreign visitors.

The cubs, the second litter since the tiger couple were brought to the zoo, were named Padma, Meghna, Sangu, and Halda. They are all in perfect health.

Zoo authorities said they are committed to taking good care of them and attending to their needs.

The zoo’s staff had already carried out all the necessary work to give the zoo a facelift as well, amid the rush of visitors.

With Raj, Pori and their pride including the white cubs, the zoo has seen a revival and is attracting more tourists and animal lovers.

“I saw four white tiger cubs here and I really liked them,” Alicha, a visitor to the zoo, told Xinhua recently.

Alicha, who uses a single name, said, “They are so cute.”

She said she came to the zoo with her family members mainly to see the white cubs.

Many visitors can be seen walking around the outside of the enclosure of the tiger cubs, as the little cubs play with their mother.

Doctor Shahadat Hossain Shubo is the deputy curator of the zoo. He said the first white tiger was born here in 2018 and is now four years old.

Following that, four more white tiger cubs were born this year, he added.

“Including these four, we have a total of five white tigers. All five white tigers are in good health,” said Shubo.

He said, “In our breeding program here we monitor the tigers separately from birth and when we know that they (tigers) are in prime condition for mating, we mate them and then keep the female tiger in a separate enclosure.”

“Then we can monitor the mother tiger’s pregnancy and be ready for when she gives birth,” he said.

“Only one white tiger is born in every 10,000, so now many people come to see the white tigers,” he added.

“The white tiger cubs are beautiful. Naturally, we watch them closely, so that they don’t get into any kind of trouble,” said Shubo.

Shubo said they monitor them closely so that people do not disturb them and they get proper food and remain healthy.

“When the COVID-9 pandemic fully eases and tourism returns to normal in the world, we will invite tourists from all over the world, including China, to come and visit the zoo,” said the zoo official.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022

A freight train loaded with fruits from Thailand and Laos departed the Lao capital Vientiane on Friday and entered China via Mohan Port before heading to southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality.

This is the first special train for fruit transportation running along the China-Laos railway, which went into operation on Dec 3, 2021.

The train is loaded with 25 refrigerated containers of Thai longan, Lao banana and other fruits, with a total value of more than 5.5 million yuan (about 783,200 U.S. dollars).

The China-Laos railway is the first international railway project built with Chinese investment and the full application of Chinese management and technical standards. It is a docking project between the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and Laos’ strategy to convert itself from a landlocked country to a land-linked hub.

The railway has enhanced connectivity between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) member states and greatly reduced the cross-border transportation cost. It has expanded the bilateral markets and promoted the development of logistics, industry and trade of countries along the railway line.

2 key electoral laws will be ready for royal okay this month: Wissanu

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2022

The two organic laws necessary for the next general election should be submitted for royal endorsement this month, Deputy PM Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Friday.

The two draft laws – Political Parties Act and MP Election Act – were recently cleared by the Constitutional Court following amendments that would restore the use of two ballots and the calculation of party-list MPs by dividing the total by 100.
Wissanu said the court will soon send its verdict to Parliament, which had sought a ruling on the constitutionality of the laws.
Upon receipt of the verdict, Parliament will then forward it to the government.
The deputy PM said that traditionally, the government submits a bill for royal endorsement within 20 days after obtaining it from Parliament.

However, in this case, he expects an extra five days to be added in case of a possible appeal to the court ruling.
“The bills should be submitted for royal endorsement within December,” said Wissanu, who is in charge of the government’s legal affairs.
He added that His Majesty the King has 90 days to consider the draft laws, and hence expects them to be endorsed by March.
Wissanu also rejected speculation that the House cannot be dissolved while laws are waiting for royal endorsement.
“These are unrelated matters. The House has been dissolved before while laws were waiting to be royally endorsed. There are no rules stating that bills are voided when the House is dissolved,” he said.
He added that even if the PM dissolves the House before its four-year term ends in March, the two organic laws will be enforced before the next general election once they get the royal stamp of approval.
