Thailand’s digital generation will be the first consumers in Asean to experience TMRW, a digital bank powered by United Overseas Bank (UOB).

TMRW is the first mobile-only bank designed for Asean millennials who prefer to conduct financial activities on their mobile phones, anywhere and at any time, the bank’s head of regional digital banking Dennis Khoo said yesterday.

Asean’s digital generation, who form the third largest base of digitally-savvy consumers after China and India, expect effortless and engaging digital experiences to help manage their money wisely.

TMRW’s “Different Generation, Different Solutions” approach aims to meet their needs in a manner in sync with, and distinct to, their lifestyles.

TMRW makes banking simpler, more transparent and more engaging for its customers through the use of data.

TMRW aims to build a customer base of three to five million in the next five years and will contribute to UOB’s strategy to scale up its customer franchise across Southeast Asia. The Bank will launch TMRW in a second Asean market in the coming months.

With the potential to produce quality products, local businesses in Myanmar should not be content with the domestic market only and should find proper ways to export to the overseas markets, according to experts.

Thet Su Hlaing, official representative of Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH for Myanmar, said in an interview that a lot of Myanmar companies have the capacity to expand overseas but are still reluctant to do so due to a lack of self-confidence.

“We have found out through our extensive study on this market that a great number of local businesses are able to export quality products that meet international standards, but they are quite satisfied with their market shares domestically,” she said.

“As a representative of Messe Frankfurt, we are now working tirelessly to encourage them to expand their businesses beyond Myanmar. We strongly believe they can do it, so we are pushing for that.”

Thet Su Hlaing considers consumer goods industry, furniture and craftsmanship, automobile, textile and garment as the most promising sectors for export to the international markets.

She sees a bright outlook for Myanmar products in Europe and South Asian countries including China, Hong Kong and Japan.

Her company Su Shwe Nadi Trading Co has been actively working with accredited business organisations in respective industries to motivate Myanmar companies to search for overseas opportunites.

“Now it is time to be part of the global community. It is time to get out of a small pie and look to a broader market. Myanmar companies deserve to ensure a bigger share of the pie in the international market, so they must be export-oriented,” she said.

Thet Su Hlaing urged local companies to form an alliance with potential partners and gather at international trade fairs to market their products in other countries.

“Collective effort is the key to success in the expansion of business. We are encouraging Myanmar companies to collectively go abroad to seize our golden opportunities as many as we can,” she said.

As the first step of expanding overseas, Myanmar companies should join international events as trade visitors in the first year, before showcasing their innovative products as exhibitors at international trade fairs where buyers across the world gather.

“As part of our culture, Myanmar people prefer doing things individually. But, according to my experience, it is much better to be united as a big team when it comes to overseas expansion,” she said.

“Our aim is to gather local manufacturers and go to international events together so that they will draw more attention and arouse buyers’ interest. Collectively, they can showcase their products at a specific pavilion for Myanmar. It is much better than an individual presence which is likely to be less noticeable.”

She added that the Myanmar pavilion at a major trade fair like the Ambiente19 which ended on Tuesday would also lead to the nation’s dignity, as it provides tangible evidence that Myanmar could produce quality products, like its neighbouring countries.

“Myanmar companies need to broaden their outlook and the government must support them to showcase their products at international events. Then, they will find new markets and unleash their potential,” she said.

THE National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has joined with Advanced Wireless Network (AWN) and Bangkok Bank to develop and conduct a trial of a mobile device-based electronic identification card system.

AWN is a subsidiary of Advanced Info Service (AIS).

Under the project, a system will be developed for verifying identities though the use of the mobile ID card. Those AIS mobile phone subscribers that are also Bangkok Bank customers will be able to use the mobile ID card instead of a physical ID card when doing transactions with the bank.

The three parties signed a memorandum of collaboration for the project yesterday.

As part of the development, the three partners will jointly develop a platform for the project, including the mobile ID application.

AIS mobile subscribers that install the application will also need to apply for a QR code from AIS before they can use their mobile ID for transactions at Bangkok Bank branches.

Their memorandum of collaboration will be valid for 12 months from yesterday and the development of the whole system will be completed in three months. The trial will run from June this year to February next year.

AIS chief corporate officer Weerawat Kiatpongthaworn said that as part of the trial, AIS subscribers would be allowed to use the mobile ID platform to open a deposit account at Bangkok Bank branches. This would help speed up application approvals.

NBTC secretary general Takorn Tantasith said he believed that other telecommunications operators and banks would soon join the project.

When asked why the NBTC joined with AWN and Bangkok Bank as the first participants in the project, Takorn said that they were chosen because they were at a more advanced stage of readiness for the collaboration.

SCB wants to puts SMEs on the map in link with Google

SIAM Commercial Bank (SCB) wants a million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to participate in an initiative from the bank to have them gain from Google’s mapping services.

The target number is for the next two years, with the enterprises being encouraged to have their shop locations mapped on the search giant’s Google My Business service.

The bank’s partnership on Google My Business began in the fourth quarter of last year, and 100,000 enterprises have since had their businesses mapped under the tie-up, SCB president Sarut Ruttanaporn said.

The bank declined to state its costs for the partnership. It had announced an investment budget of Bt40 billion, effective from 2016.

Besides offering financial services, SCB aims to support SMEs in Thailand by giving them the knowledge, tools and channels to digitise themselves in the wake of technological disruptions, SCB president Arak Sutivong said at a press conference yesterday.

“Business owners who would like to create an online presence with Google My Business through SCB simply need to have a deposit account with the bank,” Arak said. “They would then need to bring identification cards and documents verifying their business address to apply for the service with SME Business Centre officials or any SCB branch staff.

“This enables SMEs to open online shops in as little as 30 minutes.”

The service is free.

Google said that supporting the digitisation of SMEs is one of the company’s key objectives.

“The Google My Business service will allow SMEs to increase their digital visibility through posting photos of their businesses, engaging with customers through reviews, and having access to market insights, said Michael Jittivanich, Google Thailand’s head of marketing.

Some 99.7 per cent of Thai businesses are SMEs, contributing 42 per cent of the country’s GDP and 78 per cent of Thailand’s total employment, he said.

“Furthermore, the number of Google searches with the word ‘store’ in Thai have doubled in the past year, while searches of the word ‘near me’ in Thai have tripled,” Michael said. “Hence, we see a timely opportunity to partner with SCB and continue to connect SMEs with their customer base through Google My Business.”

Arak said: “In helping our clients increase their digital presence, we will be able to support the growth of our clients’ businesses.

“From here, SCB will be able to continue to offer our clients various financial services such as digital loans and online payment platforms.”

Sarut said SCB’s SME portfolio stands at Bt3 billion, with SME loans expected to grow by 5 to 7 per cent in 2019.
