Food Passion, a leading Thai restaurant chain operator, has come up with a brand-new “Go Beyond” strategy to generate revenues upward of 5 billion baht by 2025.

The company oversees Bar-B-Q Plaza, Korean restaurant Red SunChama, which offers healthier options, and fast-food Gon Express outlets.

Chataya Supanpong, Food Passion’s chief engagement officer, told the press on Tuesday that the new strategy will focus on personnel, profit and the planet.

The announcement comes at a time when business is almost back to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic and the firm has made more than 2.7 billion baht in the first nine months of this year.

However, Chataya said that owing to consumer behavioural changes and food industry trends, Food Passion needs to upgrade its operations to provide frictionless service and personal insights.

“We need to go above and beyond our customers’ expectations by offering fine-dining restaurants, hygienic food, digital experiences and eco-friendly hangouts,” she said.

In its three-point plan, she said, the company has established its own learning and training centre to upgrade its personnel’s skills and education credentials.

As for profit, Food Passion plans to strengthen its three brands with digital options like cashless payment, mobile phone ordering and expand its business to neighbouring countries in the next three years.

“We currently have Bar-B-Q Plaza franchisees in Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia. Next year, we plan to enter Laos, and in 2024 four more branches will be launched in Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines,” Chataya said.

As for the planet, she said, the company has redesigned its operations to cut down on food waste. Food Passion is also partnering with a start-up to reduce 30% of its emissions by 2030 and go net zero by 2050.

Chataya added that Food Passion has set its target at 3.5 billion baht for this year and expects it to grow to 3.8 billion baht next year.

She said expanding the fast-food outlets, introducing cashless payment options, opening 40 new Bar-B-Q Plaza outlets and 30 more branches of other brands will all contribute to the growth in Thailand.

“Eating options now extend beyond dine-in restaurants and department store outlets,” she said.

The company has also aligned itself with the new eating-at-home lifestyle by releasing the GON barbeque sauce, which has already generated 11.2 million baht.

Food Passion is also engaging customers via its official LINE account and other online marketing channels to provide personalised promotions.

“The pandemic has taught us many lessons, including opening new doors for Food Passion to do business from all dimensions,” she said.

Chataya concluded that by 2025, Food Passion will have more than 270 outlets in Thailand and be able to generate up to 4.5 billion baht in revenue. The company will also operate 47 sites in seven countries, generating 800 million baht in revenue and employing over 2,500 people.

True, DTAC customers accuse consumer group of bias against the merger

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

A group of customers of True Corporation and Total Access Communication (DTAC)’s mobile phone networks on Tuesday accused the Thailand Consumers Council (TCC) of being biased against the merger deal of the two operators.

The group went to the council’s head office and submitted an open letter demanding that the non-governmental organisation be unbiased about the deal instead of “acting in favour” of the other mobile phone operator. The group stopped short of mentioning Advanced Info Service (AIS), Thailand’s largest mobile phone operator in terms of subscriber base.

The group was led by Kongchat Kaewsukkho, a representative of DTAC mobile phone users, and Jirawat Pirasakphakdee, a representative of TrueMove H mobile phone users.

The two representatives said they were acting on behalf of a “group of True and DTAC mobile phone network users”.

After a long delay, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission voted on October 20 to give the green light for True and DTAC, the second and largest operators, to go ahead with their proposed merger with stringent conditions.

The NBTC voted that it had no power to stop the merger but could only issue regulations to protect customers.

True, DTAC customers accuse consumer group of bias against the mergerBut the TCC filed a lawsuit against the deal in the Central Administrative Court, which led to a suspension of the merger pending a ruling by the court.

Kongchat said his group made the move after it suspected “unrighteous” conduct by the TCC and lack of neutrality, after the consumer council launched a campaign on websites to gather signatures of people opposing the merger deal.

Kongchat said the open letter demanded that the TCC take into account the wishes of True and DTAC users who wanted the merger to be done as soon as possible.

“The TCC should listen to the opinions of real customers from all sides,” Kongchat said.

“The TCC should maintain neutrality and should provide comprehensive information and should act to protect all groups of consumers fairly.”

True, DTAC customers accuse consumer group of bias against the mergerKongchat said the TCC has never informed the public the benefits for customers from the DTAC-True merger.

For example, he said, DTAC clients would get to use facilities of True network after the merger, such as the True 5G network, which covers the country, and True Online’s comprehensive fibre networks as well as True Visions subscription TV network and online content of True ID TV network.

Kongchat added that DTAC users would also benefit from the numerous True service centres and several other affiliated services, such as True Health and True Money.

“A clear benefit is that our network’s signal will improve because after the merger, there will be more signal cells and the mobile signal will become faster and stronger and cover more areas,” Kongchat said.

“True and DTAC users will get to use better phone services and better Internet connection.”

Kongchat added his group believed the merger would intensify the competition between the large operators, and both True and DTAC would not stop offering privileges as they would have to try and maintain subscribers and win new ones.

“There is no reason for the merged firm to raise service prices because it would prompt customers to switch to the other network,” Kongchat argued.

He said his group also believed that the merged firm would have the capability to invest more to expand the network and develop technologies for coping with the growth of digital businesses.

“We customers see a lot of benefits for us and we clearly see that this merger will let True and DTAC clients receive only benefits without any disadvantage,” Kongchat said.

He added that the group also believed in the capability of the NBTC to control service prices to protect the customers in the future.

Rats with backpacks trained to find humans in disaster zones

Rats with backpacks trained to find humans in disaster zones

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

Giant rats wearing tiny high-tech backpacks are being trained in Tanzania for search and rescue operations.

Belgium-based non-profit company APOPO has already trained rats and dogs to detect landmines as well as sniffing out outbreaks of tuberculosis. But because of their size and agility, rats could also be a valuable tool for existing search & rescue efforts.

“Rats are just as trainable as dogs and they’ve got great sense of smell and they’re small size and natural agility should hopefully make them really good in this scenario where they could squeeze in small spaces and get closer to any victims,” lead researcher Dr Donna Kean told Reuters.

The rats here however are not the usual rodents that most people associate with garbage and disease. These are African Giant Pouched Rats, that can weigh up to around 1500 grams (3.3 lbs).

Not only are these rats very biddable, meaning they can be trained much like a dog, but they also have a longer lifespan than other rats.

“Our rats can live up to 8 to 10 years in captivity, which means that even after the training, which can take nine months to a year, they still have quite a long working career ahead of them,” Kean said.

Training of these rescue rats began in August 2021 at APOPO’s Training and Research Center, hosted by the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro, Tanzania.

The rats were trained to locate humans in a mock disaster zone, such as after an earthquake, and will eventually be outfitted with a technology-enabled backpack to enable real-time wireless audio-visual communication from within the debris site. They are also being trained to pull a microswitch around their necks when a victim has been located.

“The rat pulls (the) handle that’s hanging around at its neck… and can remotely let us know when they’ve found potential victim,” added Kean.

In testing, the rats were able to learn the basic behavioral sequence within a limited search space: search for and move into proximity of a “trapped victim”, trigger the microswitch by pulling the ball attached to their vest to remotely communicate to their handler when the victim has been found, and return to release point to receive food when the handler activates a beeper signal.

Kean said they are now increasing the complexity of the environment to more closely mimic real disaster sites. A multifunctional backpack is being designed by a team of engineers at Eindhoven University of Technology, which will include a video camera, microphone and speaker for 2-way communication, and a device for tracking where the rat is located.

Once rats are proficient, Kean said, they plan move them to Turkey for additional training trials with Turkish search and rescue group GEA. If successful, they could be moved to operational trials in which the rats could be mobilized in response to any natural disaster.

Indonesia’s Jokowi wins Abu Dhabi Forum peace prize

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo was presented the Hasan bin Ali International Peace Prize from the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace (ADFP) in Jakarta on Monday in recognition of his role in promoting peace, particularly through Indonesia’s G20 presidency.

The prize was handed over by ADFP secretary-general Al Mahfoudh Bin Bayyah, who along with another representative of the forum and United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Indonesia Abdulla Salem Al Dhaheri, visited Jokowi at Merdeka Palace.

“We are here today to deliver the 2022 Imam Hasan bin Ali International Peace Prize to [the president] in recognition of your outstanding efforts toward peace,” the secretary-general said.

Accompanying the president at the meeting was State Secretary Pratikno, who later told the press that the award was an honour for Indonesia as a whole.

“This is a very prestigious award bearing the name of Hasan bin Ali, who was a grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad,” Pratikno said. “This is, of course, an exceptional award for us, the government, the president and for the Indonesian people. This also shows that the president has been trusted as a leader who spreads a message and culture of peace to the world.”

At the same time, Pratikno added, it was a sign of support “for all of us to succeed in hosting the G20 for world peace and prosperity”.

As the leader of Indonesia’s G20 presidency, Jokowi has promoted global cooperation despite major sources of geopolitical tension, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February.

Resisting pressure from the West to isolate and condemn Russia, the president chose to keep all communication lines open and promote a global recovery agenda using the G20 presidency as his vehicle.

He also became the first Asian leader to visit the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in the midst of war, which he then followed with a visit to Moscow to help spread the message of ending the conflict.

In an interview with The Jakarta Post earlier this month, Jokowi called on leaders of the Group of 20 to resolve their differences at the Bali summit later this month, in the hope of easing tensions arising from the Russia-Ukraine war.

Jokowi said 17 of the G20 leaders had confirmed their attendance and that he would continue to encourage all of them to come, saying that developing countries were “really waiting” for the leaders to come up with solutions for the food and energy crises.

The Ukraine war has sharply impacted global food and energy supplies, after a long interruption from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Japan PM Kishida’s govt struggling as public approval plummets

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

A nine-point drop in the approval rating for Japan’s Cabinet, from 45% early last month to 36% early this month, has sent shock waves surging through government parties.

Despite the launch of drastic comprehensive economic measures in late October, an array of other problems — including issues involving the Unification Church — means that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration is likely to remain in a state of crisis.

Discouraging sign

“We will respond firmly to crucial domestic and international issues, such as high prices and problems involving North Korea, to restore public trust,” Liberal Democratic Party secretary general Toshimitsu Motegi said on Sunday, reacting to the continued decline of the Cabinet’s approval rating.

The resignation of economic revitalisation minister Daishiro Yamagiwa over his links with the Unification Church had been seen as a brake on falling approval for the government and ruling parties — as was the announcement of the major economic measures intended to ease household utility bill burdens.

Hence the shock from the results of Yomiuri Shimbun’s latest opinion poll.

“I thought the approval rating would improve, but I’m surprised it has dropped this much,” one Cabinet minister said.

LDP General Council chairman Toshiaki Endo said: “The public has not yet been made aware of the content of the economic measures. The problems involving the Unification Church are also lingering, and the public seems to have a sense of uneasiness toward an uncertain future.”

Some in the LDP believe Yamagiwa’s resignation should have come sooner. Furthermore, his resignation as a minister was followed by his appointment to head the party’s Covid-19 task force. Another former minister called this “a complete failure to read the harsh atmosphere of public opinion, further fuelling dissatisfaction and frustration with the government”.

Breakthrough sought

Kishida believes tackling issues involving the Unification Church (officially called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification) is crucial to resurrecting public support for his administration.

The government plans to launch an investigation quickly and seek a court order to dissolve the group if serious violations of laws and regulations are confirmed.

The government and ruling parties are also making all-out efforts to enact a new law to prevent the damage caused when people are pressed to make large donations. However, talks with opposition parties have run into difficulties, and efforts to enact a law before the current parliamentary session ends on December 10 have become a “race against time”.

A senior LDP official warned, “It will be a further blow if we fail to produce any result.”

Deliberations will begin later this month on the second supplementary budget for fiscal 2022, which will provide funding for the economic measures. Opposition parties will continue to pursue the Unification Church issue while also demanding the resignation of Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Minoru Terada over a political funds issue.

Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan president Kenta Izumi said, “At the Budget Committee meeting, we will sternly criticize the economic measures that have only inflated the amount of spending and suspicions involving Terada.”

Democratic Party for the People leader Yuichiro Tamaki said, “The government has dragged its feet regarding Yamagiwa’s resignation and the economic measures, and it is causing a decline in its own approval rating.”

Kishida will attend three summits later this month, including an Asean summit meeting. Toward the end of the year, the government will revise three documents, including the National Security Strategy.

“Approval ratings will remain low for the time being, but we have no choice but to steadily tackle each issue one by one and turn the situation around,” a source close to the prime minister said.

Cambodian security in place as Asean Summit opens

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

Cambodia has deployed personnel to maintain security, safety and public order and protect the dignitaries who will be attending this week’s Asean summit, National Military Police spokesman Eng Hy said.

Speaking on Tuesday, Hy highlighted the need to protect the 40th and 41st Asean summits and related meetings, hosted by Cambodia.

“The purpose of the plans is to guarantee safety, security and public order. Officials from several institutions – as well as members of the armed forces – will be deployed across the capital to prevent potential threats or acts of terrorism to the delegates of the 32 countries which will attend,” he said.

He added that the military had prepared ambulances, fire engines and motorcycles for emergency use.

“The Phnom Penh municipal military has deployed about 1,400 personnel, in cooperation with local authorities,” Hy added.

He said the safety of visits associated with delegates to Preah Sihanouk and Siem Reap provinces would also be guaranteed.

In total, over 10,000 personnel from 14 units and institutions would be assigned to protective work.

“I urge all ministries, institutions, local authorities and all relevant personnel to unite to ensure the success of the summits. All citizens, please be patient should our security measures affect your travel,” he said.

Cambodia is set to host the 40th and 41st Asean summits and related meetings from Tuesday to Sunday, with 34 world leaders and international institutions in attendance.

Trump hints at presidential run, with ‘big announcement’ on Nov 15

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

Former US president Donald Trump hinted on Monday he would mount a 2024 presidential run as soon as next week, saying at a political rally in Ohio that he would make a “big announcement” on November 15.

“I’m going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, November 15 at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida,” Trump told supporters at a rally for Republican US Senate candidate JD Vance ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections.

The former president declined to elaborate, saying he did not want to “detract from tomorrow’s very important, even critical election”.

On Tuesday, Americans will cast their vote in elections that could result in Republicans winning control of one or both chambers of Congress.

Non-partisan election forecasters predict that Republicans are likely to pick up roughly 25 seats in the 435-seat House of Representatives, more than enough to win a majority. Analysts said Republicans also could pick up the one seat they need to win control of the Senate.

Should Trump run and win, he would become only the second US president in history to serve non-consecutive terms, after Grover Cleveland, whose second stint ended in 1897. President Joe Biden, 79, has yet to announce whether he will seek a second four-year term in office.

Biden calls on voters to ‘save democracy’ ahead of midterm polls

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 08, 2022

In a stark closing argument ahead of the US midterm elections, President Joe Biden warned that a Republican victory could weaken the country’s democratic institutions and undo much of his presidency’s accomplishments.

During a final rally in Maryland on Monday, Biden and First Lady Jill Biden sought to draw votes for the Democratic gubernatorial nominee Wes Moore and Senator Chris Van Hollen, who joined them on stage.

Biden told a cheering crowd at Bowie State University, a historically Black college outside Washington, that democracy was at risk and that this was the moment to defend it.

Rather than making a final pitch to voters in a hotly contested swing state, Biden travelled to a reliably Democratic state, as his sagging popularity has made him unwelcome in much of the country.

Biden’s comments reflected the deep political divide in the United States ahead of the Tuesday elections that could see Republicans win control of one or both chambers of Congress.

Non-partisan election forecasters predicted on Monday that Republicans are likely to pick up roughly 25 seats in the 435-seat House of Representatives, more than enough to win a majority.

Analysts said Republicans also could pick up the one seat they need to win control of the Senate.

Biden calls on voters to ‘save democracy’ ahead of midterm polls

Republicans have blamed Biden’s administration for rising prices and crime, two top voter concerns. But dozens of candidates also have echoed former president Donald Trump’s baseless claims of fraud in his 2020 election defeat. Some of them could end up as governors or election administrators in battleground states and play a central role in the 2024 presidential race.

Despite delivering on campaign promises to boost infrastructure and clean energy, many Americans have soured on Biden’s leadership. Only 39 per cent approve of his job performance, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Monday.

Particularly in Southeast Asia, the industry is experiencing a shift towards commercial crops and away from traditional farming methods.

Farmers are increasingly adopting technological tools such as fertigation systems due to their efficiency in delivering water and nutrients directly to the plants’ root zone, in the right amounts at the right time, to enable optimal crop growth.
