New and very young faces are being seen among the audiences at SIFA 2019

The 2019 edition of the annual Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA), formerly known as Singapore Arts Festival (SAF), opened last Thursday. And while there are fewer posters in public or non-arts spaces, there are plenty of new faces among the audience, and that’s thanks in part to festival director Gaurav Kripalani’s curation, which seems to live up to the promise that there’s something for everyone.

At the Victoria Theatre, Japanese theatre director Tadashi Suzuki made a rare visit to Singapore, and indeed Southeast Asia, for the staging of his “Dionysus”, an adaptation of ancient Greek tragedian Euripedes’ “The Bacchae”. Three years in the making, the production was put out by veteran Indonesian producer Restu Imansari Kusumaningrum and her team at Bali Purnati Foundation. She was also behind Robert Wilson’s “I La Galigo” 15 years ago and gave a talk on intercultural projects at the Festival House on Monday when she revealed that 16 Indonesian performers underwent the Suzuki method of actor training workshops for two years before starting their work with the Japanese director.

Soon to be seen at the Theatre Olympics 2019 in Japan, “Dionysus”, with dialogue in Bahasa Indonesia dialects, Mandarin and Japanese reflecting the multinational cast’s mother tongues and with most of the audience relying on the English surtitles, last Saturday afternoon was highly anticipated. The Japanese master of intercultural theatre didn’t let us down and watching his production, live, is always a special treat for any theatre-goer. Suzuki himself also worked with Indonesian costume designer Auguste Soesastro and the result was immaculate. The same can be said for the work of music composer Takada Midori who worked with musicians from many parts of Indonesia. That led some of us to wonder if the production would have been more unique – and less like other Suzuki productions – had the Indonesian actors been allowed to share their diverse backgrounds with the Japanese master.

Peter and the Wolf

Singaporean multi-disciplinary artist Ho Tzu Nyen, a new co-curator of Asian Art Biennale in Taiwan, has been presenting his “Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia” through different forms of arts around the world. The latest was a stage performance “The Mysterious Lai Teck” at the School of the Arts (SOTA) Drama Theatre. The title character was the leader of the Malayan Communist Party in the 1940s who was suspected to have worked as a spy for France, Britain and Japan, and was rumoured to have been killed in Thailand. If this were a Hollywood film, it might have been a fun international thriller. Instead, Ho keenly put his audience in the mix of fact and fiction, aurally and visually, with the help of lighting, projections and a humanoid. The experience was like attending a lecture, and after a while you wondered whether the professor really knew what he was talking about. At the end you felt like the professor wasn’t even there and we’d only been listening to his voice.

The Mysterious Lai Teck

Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Silo Theatre brought “Peter and the Wolf” to the KC Arts Centre in Robertson Quay. A challenge for makers of children theatre productions these days is not only to keep the accompanying adults equally entertained, if not amazed, but also to keep the full attention of media-savvy kids, even for 50 minutes.

Silo Theatre was up to the task here and having a local narrator onstage – it was Kripalani himself last Sunday morning – was a smart trick and a nice treat. The deft mix of stringed puppets and live animation, shot and projected onto the large screen above, as well as the contemporary rearrangement of Sergei Prokofiev’s classical score, performed live, made this show immensely fresh and relatable.

The long queue of kids, holding their parents’ hands, who wanted to get up close to the puppets and performers after the show was also a good sign for the future audience of this international arts festival now that many of them have enjoyed their first SIFA experience.

The writer’s trip was fully supported by SIFA. Special thanks to Huntington Communications’ Juliana Tan for all kind assistance.

More this weekend and next

– SIFA 2019 continues until June 2. A few highlights this weekend are Shiro Takatani’s “ST/LL”, with music by Ryuichi Sakamoto, who’ll give a talk this evening prior to his soldout concert “Fragments” on Tuesday; and the world premiere of Huzir Sulaiman’s “Displaced Persons’ Welcome Dinner”. Three Thai theatre critics will also join Asian Arts Media Roundtable (AAMR), a SIFA’s affiliate programme.

Poland too good for Thailand

Thailand completed their mission in Pool 1 of the Volleyball Nations League in a dismal fashion after losing to two-time European champion Poland in three sets in Opole, Poland on Thursday.

The Kingdom’s squad lost the final match of the opening week 20-25 20-25 13-25 to the 2003 and 2005 European champion, which was their second straight defeat after going down to Italy 0-3 on Wednesday.

Thailand, with just a win over Germany this week, will head to Macau for Pool 7’s actions which start on Tuesday. China, South Korea, and Belgium are also in the pool.

Thailand coach Danai Sriwacharamaytakul says:  “It is really hard to play against a top level opponent like the national team of Poland. The Poles are really tall and that was a huge problem for us. Also their block worked well tonight, so that made a difference. Anyway, we won one game in Poland and we are satisfied. We are happy that we had an opportunity to visit this country and play in front of these fantastic fans. We take only positive memories from Poland.”

Poland coach Jacek Nawrocki says: “We opened this game nervously, because we lost a few points in reception. Later, we started to play well on the net. We played against Thailand before and it gave us some advantage. We had adapted to their style and it was not a big problem for us this time. We played fine under pressure. We missed a few balls in reception and we were not able to attack, but I think it’s still a matter of team integration. We tried many options and later it all started to work well, but this is normal in volleyball. We are happy about these seven points gained during this week, but it’s a pity that we didn’t manage to defeat Italy, because wins are the most important in the VNL.”

Thailand captain Nootsara Tomkom says: “It was a tough match for us, but that’s what we had expected. The Polish players gave a great performance and played really powerful volleyball tonight. We tried to fight, but they were too strong for us. Moreover, the Poles are taller than us, which makes them even more efficient in block. It was their main power and helped them a lot. I think that in a few years Poland can be a top team in world, because they still improve their play and have many young and talented players.”

Thai boxing chief Pichai Chunhavajira says Thailand will still focus on filling up their Olympic quota of 13 fighters no matter who is in charge of the organising the competition in Japan next year.

Pichai, who is also the Olympic Committee of Thailand vice president, said his goal would be to send eight men and five women, the maximum allowed by a country, despite the International Olympic Committee yesterday stripping the International Boxing Association (AIBA) of its right to run the event at Tokyo 2020.

Pichai says that during the last year’s Youth Olympic Games in Argentina, where boxing event was not run by AIBA, there was no problem because athletes and officials were satisfied with the organisation of the event and the results declared.

Thailand stunned defending champion South Korea 3-1 in the quarter-finals of the Sudirman Cup in Nanning on Thursday.

World No 4 mixed doubles players Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai led Thailand to a good start with a straight game win over Seo Seung Jae and Chae Yujung 21-18 21-18.

Then world No 18 Kantaphon Wancharoen extended the Thai lead to 2-0 after he powered past Heo Kwang Hee 21-17 21-17 in men’s singles.

But South Korea struck back in the men’s doubles when Min Hyuk Kang and Kim Won Ho bounced back from the first game deficit to beat Tinn Isriyanet and Kittinupong Kerden 19-21 21-17 21-14.

Former world champion Ratchanok Intanon nailed the coffin for South Korea by defeating  New Zealand Open champion Se Young An   21-15 21-17.

The Kingdom also reached this stage in 2017 and 2013 which still remain their best results in the world mixed team competition. They will play China on Saturday.

Defend for your lives, says women’s coach

National women’s football team coach Nungruethai Srathongwien says defence is the priority as her players prepare for three warm-up games for next month’s World Cup. Nungruethai and her players are working hard ahead of their second tilt at the global showpiece event.

After their opening warm-up against hosts France in Orleans, they then travel to Belgium for a clash with that nation on June 1 and finally take on Kontich FC in the Belgian city of Leuven three days later.

Defence has been the focus of their training at the Stade Lionel Charbonnier pitch this week and Nungruethai says they need to brace themselves for the high pressing game they can expect from the World Cup hosts, who reached the quarter-finals in Canada in 2015.

“We’ve focused on our game plan against France, which is to prepare for a possible variety of attacking tactics from them,” said Nungruethai during a break in training.

“It’s very necessary that we cover our zone well.”

Nungruethai, who was also the national coach in Thailand’s World Cup debut four years ago, has warned her players to take good care of themselves and stay injury-free ahead of the biggest competition of their careers.

 Nungruethai Srathongwien

“They need to be careful as the condition of the pitch [at the training venue] is not good and the last thing we need is for our players to get injured when we have such tough matches ahead,” she added.

Defender Warunee Phetwiset says facing France will serve as a good preparation for their daunting World Cup opener against the United States as both teams play a similar offensive style.

However, she says while defence has been the priority, they won’t be entirely passive on Saturday.

“We have been focusing on our defence but that doesn’t mean we won’t counter attack,” said the 28-year-old from Chonburi. “Also, several young girls in the team will be taking this opportunity to learn from France and shape things up for the real game with the US.”

Thailand have been drawn in World Cup group F along with defending champions USA plus Chile and Sweden.

They kick off their campaign with the US at the Stade Auguste-Delaude in Reims on June 11.

The US is odds-on favourites to retain their title – if they do so they will also be lifting the trophy for a record fourth time.

Federer, Nadal threaten Djokovic bid for historic Slam

sports May 23, 2019 13:00

By AFP

Novak Djokovic can become only the second man in history to have twice held all four Grand Slam titles at the same time with victory at the French Open.

However, a returning Roger Federer and rejuvenated Rafael Nadal will once again stand in his way.

World number one Djokovic completed his first private stranglehold of all four Slams with victory at Roland Garros in 2016.

Having clinched the 2018 Wimbledon and US Open titles and then a seventh Australian Open crown in January this year, the Serb is tantalisingly close to another ‘Djoko Slam’.

Federer and Nadal, with 20 and 17 career Grand Slam titles each respectively, may be ahead of 15-time major winner Djokovic in total hauls and have also completed career Slams.

However, not even Federer or Nadal have managed to hold all four of the sport’s greatest prizes at the same time.

It is such a rare feat that only Don Budge (1938) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) — all calendar Grand Slams — have pulled off the sweep in the sport’s history.

Djokovic, who turned 32 on Wednesday, is playing down his potential date with destiny even if it would put him halfway to a 2019 calendar Slam of his own.

After losing to Nadal in the Italian Open final last weekend, the Serb was in no doubt that it was the Spaniard who would likely be celebrating a 12th Roland Garros title in a little over two weeks’ time.

“Nadal, number one favourite, without a doubt — then everyone else,” he said.

Djokovic, who will be top seed in Thursday’s draw, could be forgiven his caution.

At Roland Garros in 2018, he was shocked by Italian journeyman Marco Cecchinato in the quarter-finals, a defeat which was such a crushing bodyblow that he even contemplated skipping Wimbledon.

Federer is returning to Roland Garros for the first time since 2015 having turned his back on clay court tennis to focus on Wimbledon.

– 10th anniversary –

This year marks the 10th anniversary of his one and only Paris triumph and should the 37-year-old defy the odds and clinch the 2019 title he would become the oldest Grand Slam champion of all time.

Age hasn’t dimmed his ability with Federer saving match points to beat Gael Monfils in Madrid and in Rome against Borna Coric as he found his feet again on European red clay.

“It’s been interesting and fun, but not so challenging, to be honest,” said Federer despite his Rome campaign being cut short by a leg injury.

Nadal, whose record at Roland Garros stands at a staggering 11 titles and a win-loss record of 86-2, claimed a ninth Italian Open title and a record 34th Masters on Sunday.

His three-set win over Djokovic was timely as it was his first title of 2019 and had followed three successive semi-final losses at Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid.

The last two of those were against Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas, both of whom play with a one-handed backhand, just like Federer.

Thiem, the 2018 runner-up to Nadal at Roland Garros, has defeated the Spaniard four times on clay.

“There is a new wave coming through with the one-handed backhand that can counter some of Rafa’s spins and lefty play,” said Federer, a four-time runner-up in Paris.

Outside of Djokovic and Federer, world number four Thiem and sixth-ranked Tsitsipas are the most likely candidates to dethrone Nadal.

The same cannot be said for Germany’s Alexander Zverev, for so long touted as the brightest star of the so-called ‘Next Gen’.

The German’s run to the quarter-finals last year remains his best Slam performance while he has yet to get beyond the last eight at any of the European clay events in the run-up to Paris.

“He has lost his self-confidence, he gets very angry, gets down and destroys himself,” said compatriot Tommy Haas, a former world number two.

“What he urgently needs is a success.”

The concert of American musician Lauv in Jakarta, scheduled for Friday, has been cancelled.

The announcement was made on Thursday morning by promoter PK Entertainment on Instagram. “Due to the recent events in Jakarta, the Lauv concert scheduled for May 24th at Tennis Indoor Senayan has been cancelled.”

“Lauv holds the safety and comfort of his fans and touring staff as paramount and sends his deepest apologies. On behalf of the artist and all involved, we apologize for any inconvenience. We are actively looking for a date for Lauv to return to Jakarta,” it said.

The singer also posted stories on his Instagram and a video on Twitter, saying, “It breaks my heart, but I love you, guys. I just got to make sure everybody’s safe and my entire team is safe. I’m going to be rescheduling the show as soon as I possibly can.”

“Once again, I’m so sorry, guys. It breaks my heart to do this and I hope everybody’s okay. I love you guys so much and I’ll see you as soon as I can.”

The promoter said that information about ticket refunds will be available on lauvjakarta.com.

Tickets had been sold out months prior to the concert. In a recent interview with The Jakarta Post, Lauv stated: “The fact that I’m flying all the way over to Indonesia and I have sold out a show is something that I don’t take for granted for a second. It’s going to be such a special night, I’m so excited.”

This May, Lauv is traveling to Asia as part of his Asia Tour 2019, starting in Mumbai on May 13 and finishing up in Tokyo on May 30.

On Tuesday evening, election protests turned violent in Central Jakarta, escalating to riots in Tanah Abang and Petamburan on Wednesday.

Smokin’ hut: Singapore’s solution for cigarette puffers

Singapore – Smokers in Singapore will no longer have to sneak a drag on the street, with the launch of the city-state’s first air-conditioned “smoking cabin”, but the experience won few fans among cigarette puffers on Wednesday.

The city-state has some of the world’s strictest anti-tobacco laws and smoking is banned in most public places, with a fine of up to Sg$1,000 ($725) if caught. E-cigarettes are also banned outright.

The new cabins, which are fitted with a Danish filtration system that can purify cigarette smoke before it is released into the air, can reportedly fit up to 10 people at a time.

But tobacco enthusiasts appeared unimpressed, with many choosing to light up at a nearby open-air smoking corner instead.

“The atmosphere in there is stifling, honestly. Because it’s so small and squeezy, I feel a bit like a second-class citizen smoking in there,” e-commerce executive Azfar Zain told AFP after using the cabin.

“There are no seats, either. I’m not comfortable with smoking there unless they make the room bigger.”

Office worker Rama Dass said he preferred to smoke outside, adding, “sometimes I just need a bit of fresh air”.

Singapore-based Southern Globe Corporation, which launched the cabin on Tuesday, said it planned to deploy 60 such structures by the end of the year.

Singapore first introduced anti-tobacco laws in the 1970s as part of a national effort to reduce smoking.

It has since expanded the number of public places where lighting up is prohibited, including university campuses, common areas around apartment blocks, and inside private cars with the windows down.

Latest : Indonesian troops flood Jakarta streets after post-election riots

ASEAN+ May 23, 2019 13:20

By AFP

Jakarta – Tens of thousands Indonesian troops were deployed on the streets of the capital Jakarta Thursday, as a deadline approached for a presidential challenger to file an appeal over claims of widespread cheating in last month’s election.

At least six people were killed — reportedly including a 17-year old high school student — after two nights of rioting as police clashed with protesters opposed to the re-election of President Joko Widodo.

The violence has been fanned by claims from Widodo’s rival Prabowo Subianto, a retired general, that the April 17 poll was a fraud.

Indonesia’s election commission on Tuesday confirmed Widodo had beaten Subianto who has until early Friday to file a formal challenge at the Constitutional Court.

The 67-year-old has appealed for calm and said he would pursue legal channels to contest the results, as he did, unsuccessfully, against Widodo in 2014.

Election officials and analysts have discounted Subianto’s claims.

But many of his supporters appeared convinced of rampant cheating in the world’s third-biggest democracy, after India and the United States.

The streets of the capital were relatively quiet Thursday with police and military personnel keeping a close watch on the heart of the city, including the election supervisory agency building — the centre of much of the violence — and the presidential palace amid fears of more unrest.

Nearly 60,000 security personnel were deployed Thursday, nearly double the previous number, after Widodo vowed that he “won’t tolerate” more riots.

Authorities have blamed the violence on “provocateurs” that they claimed had come from outside Jakarta to stir up trouble.

“We’ve detained more than 300 suspects and are now interrogating them,” said national police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo.

The elections commission office has been barricaded with razor wire and protected by scores of security personnel for days.

Since the violence broke out, the volume of online hoaxes and fake news linked has spiked in the world’s biggest Muslim majority nation, including claims that police raided a mosque. Authorities have denied the claim.

Among the half dozen dead was a 17-year-old high school student and a 19 year-old, according to local media.

Authorities said the victims died from gunshot or blunt force trauma, but denied that they fired live rounds on the crowds.

Thanathorn suffers setback in court

Breaking News May 24, 2019 04:45

FUTURE FORWARD LEADER SUSPENDED FROM SERVING AS MP AS CHARTER COURT AGREES |TO HEAR EC’S CASE FOR DISQUALIFICATION

THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court |yesterday agreed to hear the Election Commission (EC)’s plea to disqualify Future Forward leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit from the House of Representatives over his alleged shareholding in media company V-Luck.

The judges voted 9-0 to hear the case, and suspended the anti-junta politician from serving as an MP, a day before Parliament opens after the March 24 election.

Thanathorn has 15 days after receiving the court notice to provide his defence against the allegation.

The EC took the case to charter court, seeking rulings on whether Thanathorn’s membership in the House of Representatives should be terminated and whether he should be suspended from office in the meantime.

The EC petition claimed that Thanathorn held shares in V-Luck, which publishes celebrity magazine Who?, even after he had applied to contest in the general election.

Thanathorn and Future Forward Party had claimed that more than 900,000 shares had been transferred |to his mother, Somporn Juangroongruangkit, in January, a month before the MP candidate registration opened.

The share transfer document also showed the transaction was completed on January 8 but the controversy arose as the business development department recognised the shareholder change only on March 21 – three days before the election. This raised the question if Thanathorn was a shareholder of the media company even after becoming an MP candidate.

MP candidates are prohibited from holding shares in media companies under the Constitution. If found violating the law, the MP’s membership in the lower house should be terminated, the supreme law states.

Once the case was accepted by the Constitutional Court, it also had the jurisdiction to suspend the accused MP from work until a ruling was made.

As a result of the suspension, Thanathorn cannot enter Parliament and will miss the opportunity to vote for the head and the deputies of the House of Representatives as well as the prime minister despite his success in the election.

Critics see the possibility of Thanathorn being disqualified, as a first step to disband the highly popular Future Forward Party and weaken the anti-junta bloc. If the court rules that Thanathorn was not qualified to stand as an MP candidate, the party could also be charged with approving an unqualified candidate, paving the way for its dissolution.

Thanathorn yesterday held a press conference, saying Future Forward’s fight against the current regime continued despite the current development against them.

Though his MP status was hanging by a thread, the anti-junta politician said his PM candidacy remained. He was ready to be the PM and lead the coalition.

“This is not the time to lose hope. It’s the time to stand against [injustice],” Thanathorn said. “Future Forward MPs remain hopeful. I urge everyone to be hopeful, too.”

The suspension may bar him from Parliament, but Thanathorn said he would continue to work as the people’s representative even outside Parliament.

While disagreeing with the court’s decision, Thanathorn questioned if the process initiated by the EC had been lawful.

He said the EC agreed to take the case to the court even before a subcommittee had completed its investigation. The committee was trying to summon concerned individuals to provide information about the case even after the case had been sent to the Constitutional Court.

The anti-junta politician also called out the EC for rushing to pursue legal action against him. In comparison, in a similar case against Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai, the poll authority took more than 400 days to approach the court, he said.
