Bristol: Banksy’s urban canvas of choice

‘He’s like Santa Claus,’ says a fan in his hometown – everyone’s willing to keep the mystery alive

FIVE YEARS AGO British street artist Banksy adorned the side of a once-uninspiring white brick building in Bristol with the familiar image of a girl gazing out solemnly.

The dank courtyard beneath the stencil has, like many other spots the mysterious artist has decorated in his purported home city in southwest England, become one of Britain’s most photographed places.

A parody pastiche of “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Dutch master Johannes Vermeer, it bears all the hallmarks of Banksy’s cheekily irreverent style.

The elusive Briton, whose identity is said to be known to only a handful of friends, has positioned the work so that a hexagonal security alarm box sits in place of the earring.

The creation, now one of his most famous, is known as “The Girl with a Pierced Eardrum”.

It attracts admirers daily, many of them tourists on a well-trodden trail heavily documented on social media.

“Well Hung Lover”, around 15 minutes’ walk away, is another popular stop.

“Depicting a naked man hanging from the ledge of a window, below a lingerie-clad woman and a suited man looking out, it has graced the wall of a former sexual-health clinic since 2006.

Standing on the street transfixed by the image, a group of French schoolchildren listen attentively to a guide narrating the remarkable backstory of the king of street art.

Banksy’s most famous, or perhaps infamous, work is now called “Love is in the Bin”.

Moments after the painting “Girl with Balloon” sold for 1.042 million pounds (Bt42 billion) last year – a record for the maverick artist – it literally went through the shredder, which was hidden in the frame.

Banksy’s been all round the world, leaving this image of a migrant child wearing a lifejacket and holding a pink flare on a house overlooking a Venetian canal. /AFP

The buyer went through with the purchase, and some art experts say it is now worth more than it had been before the stunt. Despite years in the international spotlight as he became one of the most famous artists of his generation, remarkably little is known about Banksy.

“Nobody ever listened to me until they didn’t know who I was,” he has said with characteristic irony. Legend has it he was born in Bristol in 1974.

He participated in an educational project offering young graffiti artists the chance to practise their art without breaking the |law, according to John Nation, sometimes nicknamed the “godfather of Bristol street art”.

“As a young boy he’d come to the centre and watch people paint,” Nation told the Huffington Post. “He was heavily into hip-hop culture, graffiti.”

Banksy then purportedly joined the DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ), a gang of street artists formed in the early 1990s.

It was a time of cultural blossoming for the city, which included the so-called Bristol Sound of Massive Attack and Portishead, pioneers of trip-hop music.

In 2001 the artist reportedly accompanied Bristol amateur football club Easton Cowboys on a |tour of Mexico, playing as a goalkeeper and producing several stencilled works while there.

His notoriety mushroomed as his politically pointed murals – denouncing consumerism, the fate of refugees in Europe and other issues – began to appear around the world, from Calais to Gaza.

But Banksy appears to have never forgotten Bristol, regularly returning to erect new works.

“Well Hung Lover” prompts smirks and raised eyebrows. /AFP

Over the last two decades he has helped to make this city of 460,000 inhabitants on the Avon River one of the world capitals of street art, laying the ground for the 150 or so artists who work there today.

“Banksy has led the charge and his popularity and his rise have allowed street art to be accepted,” says Jody Thomas, a local street artist.

Walking around the city, the unique relationship it has forged with this art form is ubiquitous. The Bedminster neighbourhood has become an open-air museum studded with urban frescoes.

In Stokes Croft, between DJ shops and falafel restaurants, Banksy’s “Mild Mild West” mural looms large, depicting a teddy |bear ready to fight with anti-riot police.

What Banksy has given to Bristol, the city has returned to him, by helping to preserve his anonymity as if there is a secret pact with its inhabitants.

“There’s been occasions where his identity may have been on the verge of coming out and other people have had conversations or taken actions so that it’s not happened,” says Steve Hayles of the Upfest Gallery.

“He’s like Santa Claus. People don’t want to ruin the illusion. You don’t want people going up to your kids and saying Santa Claus isn’t real, in the same way you don’t want to go up to people and go, ‘Well, this is Banksy.’”

Famed for its ‘double-decker’ seating, Chinese eatery Lhong Tou opens a second branch in downtown Bangkok

OPEN FOR just one year, Lhong Tou Cafe in Bangkok’s Chinatown has made a name for itself by offering a new take on such favourite Chinese snacks as shumai, wonton dumplings and buns.

Housed in an old shophouse, the cafe has only nine tables and a maximum of 30 seats. No reservations are taken and diners have to get a queue number from the machine at the front and usually have to wait a long time whether going for lunch or dinner.

Known for its doubledecker tables, popular Chinese cafe Lhong Tou spreads its wings from Chinatown to downtown Bangkok.

In response to popular demand – and complaints from customers about the long queues and no parking lot – the cafe has just opened its second branch in downtown Bangkok at the Market mall, opposite CentralWorld on Rajdamri Road. Double the size of the Chinatown shop, the downtown outlet can accommodate 60 diners excluding at the outdoor terrace that will open soon.

The interior is identical to the original store. Loyal customers can still spot the familiar street-style neon signage in red and green bearing the cafe’s name in Chinese lettering. The signature double-decker tables originally designed to cope with the small space of the first branch also make an appearance here.

“Our solution to the compact space of our first store in Yaowarat (Chinatown) was to put an upper deck above the lower seats. The structure is made from metal pipes and wooden planks. It’s like a mezzanine floor and it can be reached by climbing a ladder. Customers love it and enjoy climbing up. Most want to sit on the upper deck,” says Wannayos Boonperm, a co-owner in charge of design concept.

Wannayos has teamed up with the Voranate brothers, Nithi and Itthi – the guys behind the steakhouse Meat Bar 31 on Soi Sukhumvit 31. The siblings also serve as consultants to a number of restaurants and advise on interior design and the food concept.

Wonton soup and steamed shumai dumplings

“Lhong Tou means the head of the dragon and we adopted it because our first shop is located next to the Odeon Circle, the gate to Bangkok’s Chinatown. Tourists come to Yaowarat to try a variety of Chinese foods so they will hop from one restaurant to another. We wanted to become a pit stop on their culinary route, so we positioned ourselves as a cafe rather than a restaurant by serving Chinese-influenced snacks instead of heavy meals,” says Nithi.

Though none of the owners have any Chinese ancestors, they offer the Chinese snacks that people living in Yaowarat normally eat but present them in a more contemporary style.

“Chinese food at Yaowarat is not like what you can find in Hong Kong. It’s a mix of Chinese and Thai. That’s pretty typical and is what makes the Chinatowns in different cities so varied. We want our place to become an everyday cafe so the prices are affordable. I can say that the customers don’t need to spend more than Bt200 per person for both food and drinks,” adds Itthi, a Cordon Bleu-trained chef.

A set of congee and side dishes

Congee with a variety of side dishes is a popular Chinese breakfast usually enjoyed with family members. Instead of featuring it as a feast, Itthi presents it in individual servings, placing a bowl of congee and a variety of eight sides – fried Chinese sausage, dried shredded pork, pickled vegetable, salted egg yolk, boiled peanuts and seasoned mushroom – in a large bamboo basket. Priced at Bt129, it’s an all-day breakfast dish that’s much in demand.

A small soup bowl with three pieces of shrimp wonton dressed with goji berry (Bt59) is as tempting as the steamed shumai dumplings with three fillings – minced shrimp, minced pork and Chinese chives (Bt69).

Durian lava bun, mini BBQ pork buns, steamed shitake bun, and fried lava bun

For fried snacks, go for minced shrimp wontons (Bt69 for five pieces), shrimp spring rolls (Bt59), or shrimp dumplings wrapped with potato threads (Bt79). The fried chicken marinated with Mala sauce from Sichuan peppercorn, chilli and various spices is also worth trying and not too much numbing and spicy. It goes for Bt79.

Other popular snacks are fried lava bun with creamy custard and salted egg yolk oozing out (Bt29), five pieces of fried mini BBQ pork buns (Bt49), and a piece of durian lava bun (Bt59). There is also a steamed shitake mushroom bun (Bt59) that comes in a mushroom shape and is stuffed with seasoned mushroom.

Hot anti-ageing tea

To complement the food, customers can order a pot of hot anti-ageing tea consisting of osmanthus and butterfly pea flowers (Bt160). For cold drinks, opt for the refreshing butterfly pea lemonade (Bt70) or butterfly pea Thai milk tea (Bt75, only available at the second branch).

Lhong Tou Cafe is a big hit among Chinese-speaking tourists who account for about 60 per cent of the customers.

Iced butterfly pea Thai milk tea

“We didn’t expect to draw a lot of Chinese-speaking tourists to try our food,” says Nithi. “In addition to the flavourful taste, customers come to get an experience for which they are happy to spend. Unlike some restaurants where customers come to try a famous and particular dish, our cafe integrates all elements.”

“Some tourists just visit Bangkok once and complain that they missed the chance to eat at our restaurant. Our answer was to move closer to them by opening the new branch in the areas popular among Chinese tourists. In addition to Chinatown, the popular tourist spots are the sacred Erawan Shrine and the Pratunam shopping area,” adds Wannayos.

Clay pot rice with crispy chilli and garlic, crispy pork belly and soy saucemarinated egg yolk

As the second branch also attracts office people, particularly during lunchtime, five clay-pot rice bowls with different toppings have been added to the menu. Ranging in price from Bt139 to Bt169 a bowl, they include clay pot rice topped with Chinese sausages and egg or with chilli, garlic and crispy pork belly.

Chinese plum bingsu

The refreshing dessert that is only available at the second branch and perfect for sharing is Chinese plum Bingsu (Bt95), which boasts Chinese plum snowflakes served with fresh lychee and peach and lychee bubbles.

THAT TASTES SO GOOD!

Lhong Tou Cafe’s second branch is on the ground floor of the Market mall, opposite CentralWorld on Rajdamri Road.

It is open daily from 10 to 10.

Call (064) 935 6588 or visit “Lhong Tou Cafe” page on Facebook.

If you’re nervous about using your credit card when ordering online, TrueMoney Wallet could be the way to go

TRUEMONEY Wallet is a fun, free and easy to use electronic wallet that can make your life easier in Thailand’s growing cashless |society. The e-wallet service by TrueMoney, which is Southeast Asia’s leading fintech firm, can be used to pay bills and shop online as well as cover goods and services that support the e-wallet.

You can conveniently link TrueMoney Wallet to your bank account or you can transfer money from your bank account to the e-wallet for use.

And now, TrueMoney has collaborated with Google to allow the use of the e-wallet service for Google Play for buying songs, movies, e-books, games and Android apps.

Although you can use your credit card on Google Play, you may feel uneasy about giving away your credit card number. The e-wallet service could thus be a safer way to spend online.

And you can limit the use by transferring as much money to your e-wallet as you need to use without worrying about your account being hacked or having your credit card number stolen.

To use TrueMoney Wallet, you need to download the TrueMoney Wallet app and then open the app and register for an e-wallet account. TrueMoney will send you an OTP (one-time password) as an SMS to the phone number you use for registering the e-wallet account. The phone number and OTP will be used together with phone number to prevent your account from being stolen.

And to start using TrueMoney Wallet with your Android account to buy content on Google Play, you must open the Google Play app and then select TrueMoney Wallet as the payment method.

Then, when you want to purchase an item on Google Play, you simply have to transfer money from your bank account to the e-wallet to cover the cost of the purchase and you can then buy the item in Google Play right away.

If you link the e-wallet with your bank account, you can use your TrueMoney Wallet account like a digital ATM without having to transfer the money from your account first. The limit on each use is set at Bt3,000 per transaction.

I tried using TrueMoney Wallet to subscribe for Google One cloud storage. I found registering for an e-wallet account with TrueMoney was a breeze. Then, I linked my Google account with the TrueMoney Wallet account to deduct the annual fee for the Google One service. When I was linking the service, an OTP access code was sent to my phone number for verifying.

TrueMoney Wallet has also joined with JOOX, NetMarble, NEXON, IGG and more to provide extra benefits if you use the e-wallet to make payments on Google Play.

For example, JOOX users who pay any amount for the JOOX VIP service will receive an additional 30 days at no cost, while the Lords Mobiles game players will obtain special items when purchasing defined packages. Moreover, each time TrueMoney is used for Google Play, you’ll be allowed to play the Chicken Hit game up to three times and win a cash-back reward via TrueMoney Wallet,

The e-wallet app can also be used to buy content from iTunes and App Store.

TrueMoney Wallet is also accepted at 7-Eleven shops and selected other shops. When I paid at 7-Eleven, the app generated a bar code for the cashier to scan and the value of the goods was automatically withdrawn from my TrueMoney Wallet account and an SMS sent to alert me of the deduction.

The TrueMoney Wallet app can also be used to pay utilities bills, top-up the EasyPass service for expressway access, buy tickets at Major Group theatres, make purchases at Makro, CP Freshmart, True Coffee, Chester Grills, McDonald, Dunkin’ Donuts and other shops.

You can also use it to shop at WeShop, Lazada, AliExpress, JD Central, Pomelo, Konvy.com, Agoda, Supersport, all of which offer discounts on selected goods when paying with the TrueMoney Wallet.

Established in 2003, TrueMoney became a part of Ascend Group in 2014. Its TrueMoney Wallet now has about 7 million active users each month. TrueMoney says it’s targeting 10 million users this year.

The service is free for users.

The beauty of these boats in that friends and family can enjoy complete privacy as they cruise

THE YACHTING lifestyle has become increasingly popular in the region, with more people wanting to fulfil their dreams of tranquil and private cruises among idyllic islands with friends and family.

Vrit Yongsakul, managing director of Boat Lagoon Yachting, has led the growth of Thailand’s biggest yacht importer-distributor for 13 years, and he’s seeing interest in the lifestyle surge, especially in Thailand.

It’s largely driven by the appeal of absolute privacy, he says.

“You feel more free,” Vrit says.

“Luxury yachts can take their owners anywhere they wish to go and at any time. And the owners have many destinations to choose from, so it never gets boring.”

Modern yachts are also designed with such a high level of comfort that they’re akin to luxury condominiums, says Vrit, who introduced a range of new British yachts in Singapore last week.

“It’s like taking your own condominium with you, complete with a comfortable living room and kitchen and elegant bedrooms.”

Vrit Yongsakul, managing director of Boat Lagoon Yachting, presents the upper deck of the yacht Princess Y85.

Yachting is a sociable pastime. Friends and family might take several yachts out together, cruising to islands much as the owners of luxury sports cars and motorcycles organise group outings on weekends. It all serves to cement long-lasting friendships, Vrit says.

Yacht owners obviously don’t have to worry about money. They had previously been concerned about how often the yacht was used and how best to maintain it, and whether friends were available to join them on a cruise, says Vrit.

His customers these days are more sophisticated and have more knowledge about yachting, and they can differentiate among various models, he says.

They might even consider the financial status of the manufacturer when deciding to buy a boat because they might want to upgrade later.

Customers make the decision to buy faster than in the past because they have more confidence in after-sales service, says Vrit.

Distributors typically place an order with the boat builder once a customer decides to buy. There can be a wait or one year to one and a half years for delivery.

Prospective customers can make their choice among models by taking a “test run” on one of the yachts Vrit has in stock, and he’ll also accommodate them if they want to buy right away.

“Many of our customers are financially ready to buy and they don’t want to wait – they want to get it right away,” he says.

Vrit’s long experience has taught him what his customers like and expect, and the boats he’s imported meet their demands, so they sell quickly.

His company’s sales have grown 10-15 per cent annually over the past 10 years. It sells about 40 yachts a year at prices ranging from Bt40 million-Bt900 million.

Vrit says his company has a great record of customers remaining loyal. First-time buyers often come back quickly to either upgrade their yachts or buy additional boats.

What Vrit was showing in Singapore last week was three new models of the Princess Yacht, the world’s most popular choice and built by a well-known British boatyard.

The range, including entry-level super yachts and sport yachts, were being shown for the first time in Asia at One 15 Marina Sentosa Cove. Visitors got to admire a Princess Y85, Princess F45 and Princess R35, together worth Bt450 million.

One was sold beforehand and two people expressed interest in the Princess Y85, alone worth Bt300 million.

The Princess Y85 is regarded as the pinnacle of the Motor Yacht class, offering elegant luxury living, lots of space, and great performance.

Vrit Yongsakul, managing director of Boat Lagoon Yachting, leads a tour of cabins inside the yacht Princess Y85.

The Princess F45 is the class-leading compact flybridge yacht, optimised for on-deck living. It’s designed for maxim space, efficiency and flexibility. The Princess R35 is described as a sports yacht of revolutionary performance, optimised for speed with a groundbreaking “sports car” air-intake system and hydrodynamics, exhilarating rides guaranteed.

These three models are among 15 yachts worth Bt1 billion in total that Vrit is importing from the British manufacturer this year.

Established 25 years ago, Boat Lagoon Yachting represents world-class brands including Princess, Jeanneau, Prestige, SACS and Burgess, with an exclusive dealership that covers Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Maldives.

The new Fitbit Inspire will tell you if you are leading a healthy life without emptying your wallet

KNOW YOU should exercise more but unable to find the motivation to get started? If so, you might want to invest less than Bt3,000 in the Fitbit Inspire, a highly affordable and fashionable fitness tracker that keeps a close watch on your activities and alerts you to your smartphone notifications.

The Inspire is light and small and comfortable enough to wear all day and night to track both your activities and your sleep.

The Inspire is available in two colours, black and red. The black one has a white LED illuminating its greyscale display while the red one has a red LED and looks great with a red strap. I tried the red one and can confirm it looked sleek rather than gaudy.

The Inspire can also be made more fashionable with optional accessories like a premium hand-crafted Horween leather or trendy metal mesh strap.

The fitness watch tracks all-day steps, distance, active minutes and calories burned. And when you go to bed with it, its automatic sleep tracking works with the Fitbit app to let you understand your rest to try improve it. That’s important because medical experts are constantly stressing that a good night’s sleep can decrease the risk of diabetes and help with obesity.

Fitbit Inspire uses a 3-axis accelerometer and vibration motor to monitor your movements and calculate them into steps and calories burned, based on gender, age, weight and height.

It has sufficient memory to save seven days of detailed motion data – minute by minute.

To use it, you need to download and install the Fitbit app that will link with Inspire through a Bluetooth connection. You also need to register for an account with Fitbit for cloud space to store the data logged by the tracker.

The Inspire comes with SmartTrack function that automatically recognises workouts like walks, runs, swims, bike rides and more. It logs the data and syncs with the Fitbit app to your online account to keep as your fitness record. Fitbit then sends a weekly report to compare that week’s fitness data with the previous one.

You can also use Fitbit app to customise the clock face. Options include a helpful stats clock face for workers or a polished clock face for work. Ten clock faces are available for you to select.

Fitbit can keep the Inspire’s price lower than Bt2,800 by cutting features like the heart rate sensor and floor climb tracking.

However, the Inspire is swim proof and water resistant to 50 metres, but while it tracks how long you have been swimming, it won’t tell you how many laps you’ve completed.

The touchscreen has a backlit OLED display which responds swiping and scrolling and boasts such functions as an easy-to-use dashboard that provides data on your steps, calories burned, activity, sleep and more from your wrist without having to check the app.

It’s intuitive to navigate too. You can do it by tapping the screen, swiping up and down or pressing the back button. You swipe down to scroll through the apps on the tracker, tap to open the app or swipe up to see your daily stats.

Two apps that are available are Timers and Alarm. You must first use the Fitbit app to set or delete alarms and use the Alarm app on the Inspire to turn the set alarms on or off. The Timers app provides a stopwatch and countdown timer, which can be handy for certain workouts.

The Inspire also supports the female health-tracking feature of the Fitbit app. The tracker and the app will let a woman follow her menstrual cycle and record symptoms.

You can stay connected on the go with updates from your smartphone apps and receive calls and text alerts as long as your phone is nearby.

The tracker has a good battery life. It can stay on to track your activity for five days after one charge. It takes about two hours to fully charge from zero battery level.

During the test, I found the Inspire was comfortable to wear and having it on my wrist during the night didn’t cause a problem. I tested it by walking for about one-and-a-half hours. At the end of the day, the Inspire reported that I had taken 15,991 steps, covered 11.25 kilometres and been active for about 109 minutes.

A nice feature of the tracker is that it reminds and encourages you to stretch your legs and take 250 steps every hour from 9 am to 5pm. This is good because sitting for too long is not good for the spine.

I also liked the Fitbit app feature that allowed me to monitor and log my meals and compare calories eaten to calories burned. This is handy if you want to lose weight.

Fitbit Inspire has a suggested retail price of Bt2,790 and the package comes with two sizes of wristband, small and large. It can be ordered from the Fitbit official store at Lazada.co.th.

Key specs

Small wristband: Fits a wrist between 5.5  7.1 inches in circumference

Large wristband: Fits a wrist between 7.1  8.7 inches in circumference

‘On edge’ Federer marks Paris return with victory, Kerber crashes

sports May 27, 2019 09:39

By AFP

Roger Federer marked his return to Roland Garros after a four-year absence with a straight sets win over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday, admitting he “felt on edge”, as Angelique Kerber’s hopes of completing a career Grand Slam suffered a quick kill.

Federer, a 20-time major winner, hadn’t played the tournament since 2015 when he reached the quarter-finals.

However, on Sunday, it was as if the 37-year-old had never been away as he swept to a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour 41 minutes on a packed, rebuilt Court Philippe Chatrier.

It was his 60th successive first round win at a Grand Slam.

“I felt on edge at the start, my heart was beating crazily,” said Federer, who hailed the new-look stadium which has been 90% rebuilt in readiness for the installation of a retractable roof for 2020.

“I felt great playing on this court. It looks very attractive, so congratulations to everyone involved.

“Hopefully I can play here again for my next match.”

That match will be against German lucky loser Oscar Otte who won just his second match in eight years on the tour by seeing off Malek Jaziri of Tunisia 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

“I would be surprised if Roger knew my name,” said Otte, the world number 145.

Federer broke serve five times and fired 36 winners past 24-year-old Sonego, the world number 73 who made the quarter-finals at the Monte Carlo Masters.

German fifth seed and reigning Wimbledon champion Kerber saw her hopes of a career Grand Slam ended by Russian teenager Anastasia Potapova.

Kerber slumped to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat to 18-year-old Potapova who was making her French Open debut.

“Kerber is actually one of my idols, and when I was young I was looking for her game,” said the 81st-ranked Russian who hit 28 winners past her German opponent.

Kerber, 31, has now lost six times in the French Open first round.

The German left-hander had come into Roland Garros carrying a right ankle injury which forced her to pull out of the Italian Open and retire from her second round tie in Madrid.

“I didn’t have many expectations coming in,” said Kerber, who was broken six times in the match which brought the curtain up on the newlook Chatrier arena.

Potapova’s first win over a top 10 player gives her a second round clash against 19-year-old Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.

Greek sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, who stunned Federer on his way to the Australian Open semi-finals and beat 11-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal in Madrid, also made the second round.

The 20-year-old sixth seed brushed aside Germany’s Maximilian Marterer 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).

– New court unveiled –

The new Court Simonne Mathieu, a 5,000-capacity semi-sunken arena enclosed by greenhouses, was officially unveiled on Sunday.

It forms part of the 350 million euro upgrade of the entire site which will also see the demolition of the Court 1 ‘bullring’ after the 2018 tournament.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, the 2016 champion, had the honour of opening proceedings against America’s Taylor Townsend and the 19th seed marked the occasion with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win.

“It’s cute,” said the Spaniard. “It’s not small, but it’s, you know, cosy.”

Other winners on the first day included Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori, a quarter-finalist in 2015, who eased past France’s Quentin Halys 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

However, Italian 16th seed Marco Cecchinato, the man who sent Novak Djokovic crashing out in the quarter-finals in 2018, fell at the first hurdle.

Cecchinato lost to 37-year-old Frenchman Nicolas Mahut — who has slipped to 253 in the world — 2-6, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Canada teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime withdrew from the tournament with a thigh injury, just a day after finishing runner-up to Benoit Paire in Lyon.

The 18-year-old was seeded 25 and had been due to face Australia’s Jordan Thompson but his place has been taken by Spanish lucky loser Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Second seed Karolina Pliskova closed play on Chatrier with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Madison Brengle of the United States.

Ninth seed Elina Svitolina saw off 38-year-old Venus Williams 6-3, 6-3.

England’s Bronte Law sees her first US LPGA Tour title as the beginning of something much bigger.

Law got off to a hot start with four birdies on the front nine then delivered the knockout blow with another birdie on 16 to win the Pure Silk tournament in Williamsburg, Virginia, by two strokes on Sunday.

“This was the biggest fight of my life,” said Law, who closed with a final round of four-under 67 for her wire-to-wire win.

Law finished with a 17-under 267 total as she held off a hard-charging field that included Madelene Sagstrom, Brooke Henderson and Nasa Hataoka. The trio tied for second at 15-under on the Kingsmill Resort course.

The 24-year-old Law, who is in her third season on the Tour, said this is just the start of her first place trophy collection.

“I came in this week with the sole intention of getting one better. It feels really good,” she said.

Law got some breaks on Sunday — including one where Sweden’s Sagstrom almost holed out on 18 with an eagle but the ball hit the pin and cup and rolled back 20 feet.

But Law said hard work, not luck, got her to where she is.

“I don’t believe in destiny. I believe in hard work and determination. I stayed so focused out there and my caddie did good job of keeping me calm,” she said.

Sagstrom shot 66, Henderson 68 and Hataoka 69.

World No. 1 Ko Jin-Young of South Korea shot 68 and finished tied with four players at eight under.

Defending champion and world No. 4 Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand, shot a disappointing 72 and finished tied for 43rd at four under.

Ariya will be defending again next week at the US Women’s Open at Charleston, South Carolina.

Ronaldo not enough as Juve extend Italian domination but fall short in Europe

Massimiliano Allegri oversaw his final game as Juventus coach on Sunday, after guiding the team to an eighth consecutive Serie A title but paying the price for yet another Champions League failure despite the sensational signing of Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was left out alongside a host of other starters as the Allegri era ended with the whimper of a 2-0 defeat at Sampdoria, having played 31 of 38 matches and closing the season as the team’s top scorer with 21 league goals.

But helping the team to another Serie A title was not why the 34-year-old was signed last summer.

Ronaldo had spent nine glittering seasons at Real Madrid, lifting a fourth Champions League trophy in five seasons before moving to Italy.

His arrival in Turin on a 100-million-euro ($115 million) deal, plus a reported 30 million euros a year, was hailed as “the deal of the century” by the Italian press.

But after a season in which they were expected to sweep all before them Juventus have won less than the previous season, with their four-year reign as Coppa Italia holders ended in a 3-0 quarter-final defeat by Atalanta.

Ronaldo single handedly lifted Juventus into the Champions League quarter-finals with a hat-trick against Atletico Madrid.

But his hopes of a fourth straight European triumph were ended when they crashed out to daring Dutch Ajax in the last eight.

Amid criticism of Allegri’s tactics, Ronaldo, who has scored 124 goals in 160 Champions League appearances, reportedly said: “I don’t work miracles”.

“Cristiano showed us he could always score in the games that counted. But then you have to have a strong team behind him,” said veteran defender Andrea Barzagli.

– Money-spinner –

Despite the financial fallout of failing to advance in the Champions League, Ronaldo’s signing has been a money-spinning one for Juventus.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is the most followed sports star on social media with a global reach of over 340 million followers.

More fans ultimately means more money, and suddenly Ronaldo’s transfer fee does not look so extortionate.

The club’s value on the Milan stock exchange has rocketed by 133 percent since his arrival last July.

Shares had been trading around 0.6 euro in mid-May, jumping to 1.8 euro during the session on September 20, before dipping slightly following rape allegations against Ronaldo in the United States dating back to 2009 which he vehemently denies.

Shares jumped by 30 per cent after his hat-trick catapulted the Italian football club into the quarter finals of the Champions League in March.

Next season there will be a new coach on the bench with reports that Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri, former coach of Napoli, Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino and Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi are among the candidates.

On the pitch Welsh international midfielder Aaron Ramsey arrives in Turin from Arsenal.

Thailand’s golden oldie reveals secrets of late tennis success

THE NATION

AT 32, most female tennis players have hung up their racquets. But Nudnida Luangnam believes her best is yet to come despite being two years into her fourth decade.

Age is just a number for the Thai veteran, who yesterday won her third US$25,000 ITF title with an impressive victory over 2018 Asian Games mixed doubles gold medallist Aldila Sutjiadi of Indonesia 6-3 6-2 in the Singapore ITF Women’s 25K final.

Despite being the oldest Thai female player on the circuit, Nudnida is among the most productive with four wins since November.

“I never pay attention to how old I am,” said the former world No 195, now 643. “Sometimes I train so hard that people suggest that I shouldn’t be so tough on myself as I’m not young anymore,” added the player from Sukhothai, the first Thai to celebrate a singles ITF victory this season.

“In modern tennis, you have to be physically tough to keep up with the young players. That’s why I work hard and still enjoy the on-court routine,” said Nudnida, known as “June” to her friends.

After cracking the top 200 in 2013, Nudnida’s career looked in trouble when she was sidelined for eight months by an ankle injury in 2016. But at 29, she had no plans to call it quits and settle down to start a family.

“Now there are several players who still play great tennis at 30. Some retired but then returned to the ATP or WTA circuits and have had good results. So [age] numbers are not a problem here,” the 13-time ITF singles winner said.

Commitment, self-discipline and determination are what keeps Nudnida competitive in an era when Thai tennis lacks potential star to follow in the footsteps of Paradorn Srichaphan and Tamarine Tanasugarn.

She admits that the pressure to perform has eased as she’s grown older, but she’s focused more on her training plan – which has yielded results.

“When I was younger, I expected to climb up the rankings higher and higher and ended up feeling tremendous pressure. Right now I just love to work on the court and enjoy the competition. That keeps my motor running,” she added.

Retirement is still not in Nudnida’s plans. She wouldn’t hesitate to answer a call from the national team and still believes she has a bright future ahead. Watch this space.
