Citybook eases the hassles of travellers across cities

Jan 16. 2020
By THE NATION

Booking.com has unveiled its new pilot product, CityBook – a responsive digital guide for cities that seamlessly combines inspiration, planning, navigation and experience all in one place.

The international digital travel company launched the pilot project of CityBook in Paris, London and Amsterdam on Thursday (January 16).

CityBook will be fully focused on helping travellers once they have arrived in their destination by providing curated recommendations on things to do, showcasing local offers and discounts, providing content to help travellers get a feel for the city to help them make decisions, all with the purpose of helping Booking.com better understand most relevant issues for consumers in-destination.

The CityBook products, content and features that consumers like best will then be rolled into the core Booking.com app, furthering Booking.com’s vision to help customers in making decisions and provide simplicity throughout their entire travel journey.

Leveraging machine learning models that take into accounts a traveller’s location, the makeup of their group (family, couple or solo traveller), where they’re in their trip (first day vs the last day of the trip), as well as the weather and real-time availability, CityBook makes contextually-based recommendations to help travellers get the most out of their trip, including how to get back to their accommodation from any spot in the city.

The technology that powers CityBook brings together powerful trip research all into one place with instant recommendations, so there is limited need to plan extensively in advance.

“With CityBook, we want to put all the best possibilities for experiencing a city in the palm of your hand,” said Ram Papatla, Vice President of Experiences at Booking.com.

“Bouncing between dozens of sites and apps to get the best information and then still having to book everything separately is not the most enjoyable or seamless process. We want to help people focus on the fun part of travel planning – inspiration – and make the booking and organisation for a trip a snap, with actionable content that’s all bookable in a couple of taps and all conveniently organized in one place”.

“Based on how travelers engage with CityBook, it will evolve further with various features potentially being incorporated into the core Booking.com app.”

Whatever device or platform customers prefer, their trip experience is completely synced. Whether downloading the app for Android or iOS or simply visiting the web version of the CityBook site on desktop or mobile, once a customer has logged in with their Booking.com account details, they are set to discover, make plans and experience the city – all on their own terms.

CityBook is currently available in English for Amsterdam, London and Paris, with Tokyo, Paris, New York City, Berlin, Barcelona and Rome scheduled for launch over the coming months.

Frost at 1C: Chiang Mai catches a chill

Jan 16. 2020
By The Nation

There’ve been chilly mornings in Chiang Mai since the weekend, with the temperature averaging 14-20 degrees Celsius and never rising beyond 36.

At the lofty Kew Mae Pan Viewpoint on Doi Inthanon, though, the early-morning temperature last Sunday was a mere 1C.

The result was a carpet of frost – the frozen dew known in the North as “mei kab”.

At the peak of the mountain it was a relatively balmy 5C.

Doi Inthanon National Park chief Kritsiam Kongsri said plenty of sightseers were revelling in the experience.

“We’re expecting a lot of campers and we hope they’ll make sure their cars are in good condition, because any breakdowns could cause traffic jams,” he said.

“They should also make sure they bring warm clothing – it’s been cold here for many days.”

Guzheng adds magic to New Year in Bangkok show

Jan 17. 2020
By THE NATION

An expert player of the venerable Chinese instrument the guzheng will be onstage on January 26 for a performance welcoming the Lunar New Year, presented by Mahidol University’s College of Music.

The two-hour “Night of Chinese Festival” begins at 6pm at the Neilson Hays Library in Bangkok.

Punnakrid Thirasuthphathorn plays the guzheng with the Siam Huqin Ensemble as well as being a harpist with the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra.

Music lovers will recall him playing Thai music with Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn at the Thai Higher Education Music Festival hosted by Silpakorn University.

Punnakrid also won the silver medal in the 2019 SET Youth Music Competition.

The strings of the guzheng, also known as the Chinese zither, were made of silk when it first evolved some 2,500 years ago and there was great diversity in the number of strings.

The modern version usually has 21 metal strings and movable bridges. It is often richly decorated.

Punnakrid will be accompanied on guitar by Nutthapat Ruangboon, who is also skilled with the piano, drums, violin and the Thai flute known as a klui.

He won second prize at the 2015 His Majesty King Bhumibol’s Cup Sornthong Thai Music Competition playing the klui and earned medals in two SET Youth Music competitions.

Punnakrid and Nutthapat will perform the ancient air “High Mountain Flowing Water”, “The Moon’s Reflection on the Lake”, the folksong “Jasmine Flower”, a Chinese-Mongolian folksong called “Wild Goose”, “Spring Comes to Lhasa” by Shi Zhao Yuan, “Yi Tribe Dance” by Wang Hui Ren, “Pipa Language” by Lin Hai, and the folksong “Purple Bamboo”.

After an intermission, they will continue with “Liu Yang River” by Wang Jian Zhong, “Beautiful Cloud Chasing the Moon” by Ren Guang, “Butterfly Lover” by He Zhan Hao and Chen Gang, the folksong “Beautiful Girl of Alishan”, “Dream Back to Ordos” by Chen Yue, “Fighting the Typhoon” by Wang Chang Yuan, and “Spring View” by Seiichi Kyoda.

Seats cost Bt450 (Bt350 for library members, Bt100 for students) online and at the library and can be reserved at (02) 233 1731 or info@neilsonhayslibrary.org.

WASHINGTON – Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was stewing on the bench in the first period Thursday night. His mouth was bloody after taking an uncalled high stick, and the look on his face revealed a man determined to settle a score against the New Jersey Devils.

Or, in this case, three scores. So with 4:18 remaining in the third period, Ovechkin deposited a nifty pass from Tom Wilson into the back of the net, his third goal of the night, triggering a rain of hats onto the Capital One Arena ice, the final tally in a 5-2 win.

“Yeah, I was little mad, and I just punished them,” Ovechkin said of his response after catching the high stick from Miles Wood that required stitches early in the first period.

It was the 25th hat trick of Ovechkin’s NHL tenure and left him at 689 goals for his career, just one behind Pittsburgh’s Mario Lemieux for 10th on the all-time list. With 25 hat tricks, Ovechkin is tied for ninth all time with Cy Denneny.

“I could just tell when he got that high stick in the first there and then he got pissed off, and he always plays better when he’s a little pissed off,” Nicklas Backstrom said. “So, there you go. That was drawn up like that, I think. So, came back, got a little mad, scored two and then I was just waiting for the third. That’s the story of Ovi.”

The win left the Capitals 32-11-5, once more atop the NHL in points with 69. They visit the Islanders on Saturday before taking a week off for the all-star break. Ovechkin’s final goal provided a bit of insurance in a game that at first seemed well in hand before a tense third period.

Carl Hagelin’s goal in the opening seconds of the second period – completing a smooth sequence of passes started by Richard Panik and Lars Eller – made it 3-0 and set up what looked like a cakewalk.

But New Jersey’s Wayne Simmonds struck back less than a minute later, and the visitors trimmed the margin to one at 3:34 of the third period on a shorthanded tally from Blake Coleman, who converted a turnover into a breakaway and beat Ilya Samsonov. Coleman’s was the third shorthanded goal the Capitals have yielded in their past four games.

Jakub Vrana gave the Capitals a little breathing room, converting a rebound for his 21st goal at 6:42.

“I just try to stay in the area between the hash marks,” said Vrana, who is easily on his way to surpassing his career-high 24 goals of last season. “I mean there was a bad turnover right on my stick, and I just tried to shoot it quick, and it went in. So I was happy for that.”

Then Ovechkin completed his trick, reaching the 30-goal mark for the 15th consecutive season. He is one of two players in NHL history to reach that mark in each of their first 15 seasons, along with Mike Gartner. (Jaromir Jagr also had 15 consecutive 30-goal seasons, but that streak started in his second season.)

“It never gets old, but without my team, without my teammates, I’d never reach that milestone, I’d never reach those numbers,” Ovechkin said. “Obviously it’s a team effort. It’s really cool. . . . Just have to keep going.”

Ovechkin has tallied five goals in the past two games, accounting for both scores in Monday’s 2-0 win against the Carolina Hurricanes. In both contests, rookie Samsonov was in net, his first stretch of consecutive starts as an NHL goalie.

He stopped 32 shots Thursday to win his ninth straight start, a franchise record for most consecutive wins as a rookie. He is 14-2-1. Samsonov has become the 10th rookie goaltender in NHL history to win nine consecutive decisions and the first since Jordan Binnington in 2018-19. Before Binnington, the feat hadn’t been accomplished since 1982.

Ovechkin’s first goal came on a five-on-three chance for the Capitals at 15:17 of the first, a one-timer from his sweet spot in the left faceoff circle with assists from John Carlson and Backstrom. It marked the third straight game the Capitals’ power play produced a goal, the first time the team has strung together such a stretch since early November. Barely four minutes later, Backstrom won a faceoff and quickly found the captain for his second goal.

“We actually drew up another [play],” Backstrom said of the faceoff. “We were going to do another faceoff play, but I didn’t win it clean, and I had to kick it back there, so he jumped. . . . It used to be working a lot easier. I think teams are jumping from the inside there a little harder, and, obviously, they know we like to do that play, too. So you need to come up with new ideas and new ways to score.”

Backstrom has 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in his past 10 contests.

After letting in two goals off the Capitals’ 15 first-period shots, Devils goaltender Louis Domingue exited with a lower body injury, and Cory Schneider replaced him. The change didn’t stop the Capitals.

“Last two games I think we had a really good jump, right off the hop. So that is the plan, to not give them any chance from the beginning, and it worked well,” Vrana said.

Unheralded Hamamoto fires opening 65 to seize clubhouse lead

Jan 17. 2020
By THE NATION

Thailand’s Kosuke Hamamoto showed he can be the man for the big occasion when he signed for an opening six-under-par 65 to take the first round clubhouse lead at the SMBC Singapore Open on Thursday.

Despite playing at the US$1 million Singapore showpiece for the first time, the 20-year-old  displayed maturity beyond his years as he outplayed several of the tournament’s marquee names that include former world number one Justin Rose of England, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, American Matt Kuchar and 2019 Asian Tour Order of Merit champion, Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand.

Play was suspended for slightly more than an hour in the afternoon due thunderstorms at the Serapong Course, Sentosa Golf Club.

The first round subsequently could not be completed due to fading light in the evening, leaving 45 players having to resume their round at 7.40am on Friday morning.

Thailand’s Gunn Charoenkul showed his consistency yet again by signing for a 66 to trail Hamamoto by one shot in a share of second place that included Canada’s Richard T. Lee, Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino and American Matt Kuchar, who managed to complete his round in near darkness.

17-year-old Joohyung Kim of Korea, who is the youngest player in the field and making his SMBC Singapore Open debut, continued to show his potential as he posted a 67 to end his day in tied-sixth place alongside Korea’s Inhoi Hur and Jazz.

Jazz started his title defence with a promising 67 while Rose and Stenson are a further shot back from the defending champion in tied-ninth place after returning with matching 68s.

Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard said the two-decade automotive partnership with Nissan has moved on from the Carlos Ghosn era, dismissing reports it’s in danger of collapse and signaling the “anguish” of last year is over.

The governing board is working “very satisfactorily,” made up of responsible members who back the alliance and want to make it a success, Senard, 66, told reporters in Paris on Thursday. Nissan’s governance has also been revolutionized and now has a properly functioning board and executives who favor the partnership, he added.

A next step will be the naming of a new chief executive officer for Renault, which is expected relatively soon, the chairman said.

The future of the partnership was thrown into turmoil over the past year after the arrest of Ghosn, who led both carmakers and headed the alliance that also includes Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Detained in Tokyo in November 2018 and charged with financial misconduct, Ghosn fled Japan at the end of last month to escape trial. He has denied the charges.

In a wide-ranging 1 1/2-hour discussion, Senard said he was “surprised and shocked” by a report in the Financial Times this week that Nissan, since Ghosn’s escape, had accelerated secret contingency planning for a potential split with its French partner.

“It’s fake news, malicious and goes totally against the reality,” said Senard, who added that the partnership is being rebuilt with new top management at both companies.

The board of the alliance will decide on new, common projects at a meeting this month, and the partnership is moving toward greater convergence of platforms and technology in the face of the massive investment needed to develop new cars, said Senard.

While he declined to comment on Ghosn’s escape or his subsequent attacks on the performance of the alliance at a press conference last week, he didn’t hold back on criticism, describing a “toxic” atmosphere that long reigned between Renault and Nissan stemming from a lack of decision making.

Senard also had strong words for RNBV, the entity that led the alliance, which he said was supposed to be the nerve center of the partnership but was instead an expensive and totally inefficient operation.

Bloomberg reported Monday that since last year Nissan has been exploring the pros and cons of sustaining the alliance, particularly when it comes to engineering and technology sharing, according to a person familiar with the matter. It’s unclear how feasible any separation would be given that Renault is Nissan’s biggest shareholder and has been pushing to repair ties.

Nissan and Renault both denied that the alliance would be dissolved.

Ghosn held the partnership together for years despite a lopsided shareholding relationship favoring Renault that was put in place when Nissan was financially ailing. The French carmaker owns 43% of Nissan, with full voting rights, while the Japanese company holds only a 15% stake in Renault and lacks the ability to vote its shares. Yet Renault’s power within Nissan is crimped by a shareholder agreement known as Rama.

“I’ve never seen a structure like this, with one group having 43% of the other but in reality having no legal power,” Senard said. “It’s baroque and completely extraordinary.”

While changing the shareholding structure “isn’t the priority,” he said it could evolve in the future and also take in new partners.

“The alliance is 20 years old and really needed a serious overhaul,” he said, adding that the “anguish” he felt last year is over and he hopes to be able to show in 2020 that the partners are doing better.

Detroit braces for year of slower sales by idling auto plants #ศาสตร์เกษตรดินปุ๋ย

Detroit braces for year of slower sales by idling auto plants

Jan 17. 2020
By Syndication Washington Post, Bloomberg · Gabrielle Coppola

Fiat Chrysler is sending workers home at four factories. Ford has two operating on fewer shifts and two others no longer building discontinued products. And General Motors Co. may dial back output despite being just a couple months removed from enduring its longest strike in almost half a century.

Detroit’s three automakers are bracing for a slower year of U.S. sales by tapping the brakes on production. And they’re not alone: Researcher LMC Automotive projects that five of the six largest North American manufacturers will assemble fewer vehicles this quarter than a year ago.

Arguably the biggest concern the auto industry has going into 2020 is how much longer the good times will last after years of strong demand and rich pricing. While companies just sold over 17 million vehicles for a fifth consecutive year, more of their volume went to rental companies and other fleet purchasers. American consumers, who have been buying fewer new cars and trucks for several years, are finding them less affordable as the average window sticker approaches $35,000.

“It’s hard to argue why consumers would buy more vehicles this year, given these higher price points, given we’re so long in the tooth in this economic recovery period,” Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive, said during a presentation in Detroit this week.

Fiat Chrysler’s expected cutbacks are the least surprising. The Italian-American automaker built up a stock of as many as 70,000 unassigned vehicles in December, rankling sales staff who were forced to work overtime coaxing dealers to place orders. The pileup contributed to discounts the company billed as its most aggressive since 2008.

The carmaker is idling plants making minivans in Ontario and Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicles in Illinois this week and next. It’s also pausing production for a few days in January at two Mexico factories that assemble key models including Ram trucks and Jeep Compass SUVs, according to a spokeswoman. LMC estimates the company will reduce North American production by about 5% from a year ago.

“We always balance our inventories with our dealers,” Jim Morrison, the head of Jeep for North America, said in a Jan. 13 interview. “We want to make sure there’s a good balance.”

LMC’s expectation for a small decline in GM production is a bit more confounding. United Auto Workers union members walked off assembly lines for 40 days last fall, costing the carmaker about $2.9 billion. Still, the company is expected to trim output by almost 2%.

Ford, which is projected to pare back by about 5%, has plants in Kentucky and Michigan each running one fewer shift than a year ago. A factory in Mexico is down while preparing to make the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, while an Ontario facility stopped building the discontinued Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT models.

Honda Motor Co. is expected to make the most significant cut at 11%, while Toyota Motor Corp. is the only one of the top six producers LMC sees manufacturing more vehicles than a year ago. Industrywide, output may be little changed.

Most automakers anticipate weaker demand in 2020 and are trying to trim inventory accordingly, said Sam Fiorani, vice president at AutoForecast Solutions in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania.

“Further slowing of production – either less overtime or week-long closures – is expected in the first and second quarters to keep inventories from getting out of control,” he said.

VW CEO urges ‘radical overhaul’ to tackle technology shift

Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess told top managers that the world’s largest automaker needs to undergo a “radical overhaul” in the face of industry change or risk being pushed aside.

“The time of traditional car manufacturers is over,” Diess said in prepared remarks at an internal meeting on Thursday. The company must boost software operations to harness data from future cars, he said, citing a recent surge in electric-car rival Tesla’s share price as evidence of a changing competitive landscape.

Diess has called for deep changes at the industrial giant before, but his latest comments add a sense of urgency and risk reigniting tension with labor unions because he raises the possibility of additional cost cuts. It may be necessary to “slaughter holy cows” for VW to reach its full potential, he said.

His remarks echoed comments by former Porsche CEO Wendelin Wiedeking a decade ago during his bold attempt to take over control of much-larger Volkswagen. The comment sparked fierce clashes with VW’s workforce. Wiedeking succeeded in acquiring a majority stake in VW but ran out of funds when the financial crisis erupted. The sportscar maker was folded into VW and Wiedeking left.

If VW fails to keep up with data and software, it could end up like Nokia, which overlooked the threat posed by Apple’s iPhone, Diess warned, calling for a stronger focus on profits and cash.

So far, VW has been relatively resilient to industry headwinds, eking out a small sales gain last year and record deliveries. Global demand for new vehicles declined in 2019 as sales in China, VW’s largest market, contracted and trade disputes stoked uncertainty across regions.

VW executives must recognize “the magnitude of our task and the brevity of time” the company has left to react, Diess said. “It gives us exactly one single try.”
