NESDC launches ‘Shared Kitchen’ project for Covid relief

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) launched a “Shared Kitchen” project on Monday to distribute food boxes for people affected by Covid-19.

The project is also offering work to stall owners in the NESDC’s restaurant, which is temporarily closed under disease-control restrictions. The NESDC has joined hands with the “Community x Covid” network of people from nearby Nang Loeng market, who are helping to distribute 200 food boxes per day in five local neighbourhoods. The food is being handed out in the communities of Wat Sunthorn Thammathan, Chakkraphatdi Phong, Suppha Mit 1, Suppha Mit 2 and Wat Sommanat.

Current and former executives and staff of NESDC donated the money to hire the restaurant stall owners to prepare food for “Shared Kitchen”. The project will continue until the donation money runs out or the Covid-19 situation improves.

The official Facebook page of “Shared Kitchen” (https://www.facebook.com/sharedkitchenth) includes a bank account for donations. Those wishing to make a donation can deposit money in Kasikornbank account number 104-1-37669-0 (Mr Kittisak Motwareesri).

Former KNU chief’s son succumbs to Covid in Mae Sot

The son of former Karen National Union (KNU) chief General Bo Mya succumbed to Covid-19 on Tuesday at a private hospital in Tak’s Mae Sot district. The family is preparing to have him buried in line with their Christian beliefs.

Bo Mya’s son, 48-year-old Brig-General Tele Mya died at 11.30pm on Tuesday after spending several days in hospital battling the infection. He was deputy commander-in-chief of the KNU/Karen National Liberation Army – Peace Council (KNU/KNLA-PC).

Tele Mya recently became the deputy commander of KNU/KNLA-PC after the death of commander-in-chief General Tin Muang.

There has been a recent surge of Covid-19 infections among Karen soldiers along the border. General Saw Moe Shay, the commander-in-chief of the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, died from a Covid-19 infection on July 21 while being treated in a junta-run military hospital in Yangon.

Bank deposit protection cut to THB1 million from August 11

Thailand’s Deposit Protection Agency (DPA) said on Wednesday that from August 11 onwards, it will only provide protection for 1 million baht per account holder instead of 5 million baht.

“The new rate will cover 82.07 million account holders at 35 financial institutes, equivalent to 98.03 per cent of all account holders in the banking system,” DPA director Songphol Chevapanyaroj said.

As of May 31, DPA had 83.72 million account holders under its protection, up by 1.62 per cent or 1.33 million accounts compared to the end of last year.

“Of the new account holders, 97 per cent have less than 1 million baht in their accounts. Deposits under DPA’s protection add up to 15.28 trillion baht, up by 2.33 per cent or 347.9 billion baht from the end of 2020,” he added.

DPA offers protection to both Thai and foreign individuals and juristic persons who hold accounts in the Thai currency in any of 35 financial institutions. The institutions covered include 18 commercial banks, 12 foreign banks with branches in Thailand, two finance companies and three credit foncier firms. Deposits covered include current account, savings account, fixed deposit, deposit card and deposit receipt.

“Protection will only be provided to accounts in the baht currency. In case a financial institution gets its licence revoked, the account holder will get their money back within the sum covered within 30 days,” Songphol said.

No need to hoard food, Thailand’s supplies not running out, says DIT

Though the Covid-19 situation in Thailand has affected the manufacturing and transportation sectors, the Department of Internal Trade (DIT) said on Wednesday that supplies have not run dry, and people do not need to stock up.

Somchai Pornrattanacharoen, DIT president, said that though some products are not on the shelves due to a drop in production or transportation difficulties, Thailand has not run out of food supplies.

“Though some fresh edibles have gone from the market, the overall situation is not worrisome because there are plenty of alternatives like tapioca flour and UHT milk available. These shortages will occur until the lockdown is lifted,” he said.

However, he admitted that the situation can very quickly worsen if things don’t get better soon.

He added that wholesalers and grocery stores are cooperating with each other to ensure there is an adequate supply of goods, so shortages do not occur in any area. If stores run out of supplies, there will be a lot of trouble because most people are at home and need to cook, he said.

DIT director-general Wattanasak Sur-iam said statistics show that more consumers go out shopping in the afternoons and evenings and are buying more than usual. Fortunately, he said, stores are still able to maintain their stock of popular items like meat, eggs and popular flavours of instant noodles.

He also said that the supply of other goods is still sufficient, adding that DIT has told stores to restock shelves quickly and to adjust distribution.

DIT is also cooperating with the Department of Livestock Development to ensure the supply of pork, chicken and eggs is adequate.

Late rains leave Thailand’s reservoirs more than half empty

Most reservoirs and dams in the country are less than 30 per cent full this year due to delayed rains, the Royal Irrigation Department and Office of National Water Resources said on Tuesday.

Data collected by the two agencies shows that 138 water sources have been affected, 22 of which are large dams and 116 medium-sized ones.

Surasri Kittimonton, director-general of the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation, said the level of water in most reservoirs and dams is low even though Thailand’s rainy season began more than two months ago.

“The department will launch rainmaking operations in areas facing water shortage,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan chaired a meeting with water-related agencies to come up with ways of tackling the situation and mitigating the impact on citizens and farmers.

Expressing concern over the delay in rainfall, Prawit said he doesn’t want water shortage to become yet another crisis the public must suffer.

THG’s bid to import Pfizer vaccine tangled in Thai red tape again #SootinClaimon.Com

THG’s bid to import Pfizer vaccine tangled in Thai red tape again

Red tape and bureaucracy are believed to have once again foiled Thonburi Healthcare Group (THG)’s attempts to procure mRNA vaccines against Covid-19.

On a televised talk show on Wednesday, THG chairman Dr Boon Vanasin said he was disheartened that not a single government agency has offered to help even though he has set up deals with vaccine producers.

He said THG has spoken to Pfizer representatives in different countries but cannot bring the vaccines in because no government agency is willing to import the jabs.

The Defence Ministry, meanwhile, dismissed Boon’s claim that it was helping import Pfizer vaccines.

The Securities and Exchange Commission also asked THG on Wednesday to clarify this point within seven days.

On July 12, Boon had announced that his organisation and a “certain” government agency would import 20 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine. However, no updates have been provided even though the operation was expected to kick off last month.

Boon’s statement about THG’s failure has raised an uproar on social media, with many netizens attacking the authorities and demanding they be flexible enough to allow the import of better vaccines.

The mRNA vaccines produced by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are believed to be effective against the Delta variant of the virus, which is spreading in Thailand.

Heartbroken Facebook user posts letter from pregnant wife who died of Covid

Netizens across Thailand were saddened after a grief-stricken Facebook user posted a letter written by his pregnant wife before she died from Covid-19 on Monday. They had been married for just three months.

The heartbreaking message read: “To my dear James [the nickname of the poster], if I don’t survive from Covid-19, I apologise to you in advance since I cannot give you the opportunity to see your child’s face. I will raise the child myself [in my next life]. I want you to live well, and just think of me and our child at times. If you decide to have a new family, please choose a good bride. You must continue your life. I expect to meet you again in the next life with our child.”

The wife added that she had already transferred ownership of her car to James. She also urged him to take care of her mother, especially during this initial period of her passing away.

James added the words “I love you” to his post of the letter.

The post on Tuesday has grabbed widespread attention on social media, with 100,000 shares as of Wednesday morning and more than 15,000 comments, many from heavy-hearted netizens.

Don’t panic, eggs sufficient to meet demand: Livestock Department

The Department of Livestock Development allowed egg farm operators nationwide on Tuesday to extend the raising period of laying hens to meet domestic consumption and maintain egg price stability amid Covid-19 lockdowns.

Department director-general Sorawit Thaneeto said egg farms nationwide can extend the raising period of laying hens from the previous 80 weeks until the Covid-19 situation is resolved.

He expected the move to help increase egg production by 2 million to 3 million per day in addition to the current production of 40 million eggs each day.

“Therefore, we would like to ask people to be confident that there are sufficient eggs to meet demand during this lockdown period,” he said.
