Investors Must Think Long Term To Beat Inflation Effects, Says Stocks Guru

Investing In High-Credibility Companies That Pay Regular Dividends Is The Key Way For Investors To Beat The Economic Crisis, A Stocks Guru Said On Monday.

Josh Duitz, deputy head of Global Equities at UK-based investment company Abrdn, said there was a 50-50 chance of a worldwide recession this year. All would depend on the effectiveness of the US Federal Reserve’s measures to tackle inflation.

“If the Fed can tackle inflation effectively and people can get back to work, the situation may improve,” Duitz said.

He added that global stocks usually bounced back eventually from unprecedented shocks like the Covid-19 crisis, which has triggered supply disruption and inflation.

He noted that many companies are still able to pay dividends despite the pandemic and rising prices. He also expects dividends to grow by an average of 7 per cent this year and 5 per cent next year.

He advised investing equal sums of money at regular intervals regardless of market fluctuations to generate returns in the long term amid inflation.

“We think investing in companies with high credibility who pay dividends regularly is the best way to go forward,” he added.

Acting Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan Confirmed On Wednesday That He Has Told The Finance Minister To Find Ways To Lift The Baht’s Value To 35 Per US Dollar.

“Yes, I said it should be so,” Prawit replied when reporters asked him if he had said during the weekly Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that the baht should strengthen to 35 to the dollar.

He reiterated that he has asked Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith to talk to the Bank of Thailand (BOT) and other concerned government agencies about the weakening baht.

“We cannot let the baht fluctuate like this. The finance minister will take action and it must be better,” Prawit said.

When asked what would be a suitable value for the baht, Prawit replied: “How could I know? I never know. They must hold talks first. How could you ask me in advance when they haven’t talked yet?”

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2022

THE NATION

Acting Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan Urged Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith To Closely Monitor Rising Fuel Prices And The Weakening Baht.

The baht has weakened to its lowest level in 16 years due to a strengthening US dollar. The Thai currency opened at 37.04 to the dollar on Wednesday, weakening from Tuesday’s close of 36.97.

Arkhom has also been urged to meet with private entrepreneurs to obtain accurate information on the status of their businesses, said government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri.

A Cabinet source said Prawit was uncertain whether the weakening baht would cause foreign-exchange loss in the import of oil and gas.

Prawit would prefer the baht strengthened to a level of 35 to the dollar, the source added.

Meanwhile, Arkhom said the Finance Ministry and the Bank of Thailand (BOT) would soon discuss the baht situation and the central bank’s guidelines.

The baht weakened due to the strengthening dollar amid uncertainty over whether the US Federal Reserve would raise the interest rate by a big margin to tackle inflation, he said.

Arkhom confirmed the baht had not weakened to the lowest in the region yet, adding that it was up to BOT whether to go in for an interest rate hike to keep pace with the US.

Separately, University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce president Thanawat Phonwichai expected Thailand’s economy to recover “significantly” in the fourth quarter, thanks to a recovery in exports and tourism.

He also expected the economy to expand by 3.0-3.5 per cent this year.

THE NATION

The National Broadcasting And Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) Should Come Out With Regulations To Mitigate The Impact Of The Merger Deal Between Two Telecom Giants, The Council Of State Recommended.

The instruction came on the heels of a second NBTC request for the council to interpret its power to regulate the merger deal between True Corporation and Total Access Communication (Dtac).

The council advised NBTC to strictly adhere to its 2018 announcement, as its 2010 announcement – which stated that companies must receive permission from the NBTC before conducting a merger – had been amended.

The NBTC’s 2018 announcement stated that companies must submit a report on a planned merger deal to the commission before and after the merger.

The council noted that adhering to the 2018 announcement is in line with Section 77 paragraph 3 of the Constitution, which says the state should employ a permit system only in case of necessity.

It also pointed out that NBTC had the authority to draw up specific regulations to mitigate the impact of the merger on the public under Section 12 of its 2018 announcement.

The council advised the NBTC to use its authority based on public interest and telecommunication development.

The commission is now expected to hold a special meeting on implementing regulations to mitigate the impact on consumers, many of whom have been uncertain about the merger for some time now and have voiced concern.

Manufacturers Of Steel Bars Are Planning To Approach The Thai Government And Seek Its Permission To Raise Prices As Production Costs Have Been Rising.

Prawit Horrungruang, an adviser to the steel bar manufacturers’ association, said that the steel used to make the bars has seen a 42-per-cent price hike from last year, while the manufacturers are also facing rising costs of electricity, transportation and wages.

Prawit said the steel raw material required for making bars now sells at about US$658 (24,300 baht) per tonne, compared to $464 last year.

The rising power bill also added another 700 to 800 baht to the cost of making one tonne of steel bars, Prawit added.

He said the manufacturers would not survive without raising the prices but they need to first receive approval from the Internal Trade Department as steel bars and other steel products’ prices are under the control of the department.

He added that the rising cost of energy has affected steel prices worldwide. For example, manufacturers in Turkey have announced price hikes of $20 to $40 per tonne.

Prawit said the prices of steel bars in Thailand were lower than those in other countries. For example, steel bars in Singapore are priced at $738 per tonne, at $740 in Turkey and at $852 in China while it sells at $699 in Thailand.

Prawit also advised construction firms to use higher-grade steel bars to save cost. He said although the higher-grade bars were more expensive, construction firms would save money as they would need to use lesser quantities of the bars.

SEC Advises People To Be Cautious About Investing In Foreign Exchange

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2022

THE NATION

The Securities And Exchange Commission (SEC) On Monday Warned Thais To Cross-Check With The Bank Of Thailand Before Buying Or Investing In Foreign Currencies.

The SEC posted on its website an article warning against investing in unauthorised foreign exchange schemes.

The SEC explained that it has no authority to supervise foreign exchange, and that it supervises only the stock exchange and the trading of corporate bonds and digital currency tokens.

The article was apparently referring to a high-profile scam — the Forex-3D online Ponzi fraud.

About 9,000 complaints have been registered so far with the Department of Special Investigation, regarding losses of about 2 billion baht after investing in the Forex-3D scheme.

The case captured public attention after popular actress-singer Savika Chaiyadej, her mother and her brother were charged and denied bail on charges of operating the scam.

The SEC noted that the currency exchange law requires transactions of foreign currencies to be done with entities approved by the finance ministry, such as commercial banks and finance companies.

The SEC added that so far no foreign currency exchange rights has been given to any individual or legal entity that are not banks or finance companies.
