Police announced on Sunday that all six suspects behind the Phatthalung birds’ nest heist had surrendered last week after learning of their arrest warrants.

The six suspects will be interrogated to uncover the mastermind behind the operation, police said.

Siam Nest Co, the holder of the ninth birds’ nest concession in the province, had lodged a complaint after completing its birds’ nest harvesting operation between September 9 and 17.

The company said that when the collection team arrived in the last cave, they did not find any nests but the carcasses of more than a million swiftlets, remains of a fire and trash including plastic bottles and shoes.

The damage from this bird massacre was estimated at about 5 billion baht, the company said.

Pattaya police raided a karaoke parlour on Sunday and arrested 27 people along with the owner for violating the Emergency Decree. The detainees will undergo drug tests before they are slapped with charges.

Police had received a tip-off that a karaoke bar in Chonburi’s Bang Lamung district was in full swing despite the temporary closure of entertainment venues in line with Covid-control measures.

Officers arrived to find one of the karaoke rooms filled with a group of tourists drinking alcohol and singing loudly.

Thailand’s National Regulatory Authority (NRA) for vaccines was given a Maturity Level 3 mark – the second-highest in the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s classification system.

The classification was announced on August 27 by Dr Marieangela Simao, assistant director-general to WHO’s Access to Medicines and Health Products, at the virtual International Conference of Drug Regulatory Authorities (ICDRA) held between September 20 to 24.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkonghchana explained that evaluation is based on the quality, safety and effectiveness of vaccines distributed in a country. Thailand getting the third level means its vaccine supervision system is stable and integration work systematic. The ranking has four levels.

With more people shopping online under the new normal, there has also been a surge in complaints about fraud, scams and people getting the wrong product.

The hotline is operated by the Digital Economy and Society Ministry’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), which works alongside the police High-Tech Crime Division and other agencies to prevent cybercrimes.

“Complaints this year have risen 29 per cent compared to the same period last year. Most of the complaints [82.4 per cent] were related to Facebook transactions, followed by 4.6 per cent against general websites and 4.3 per cent against transactions on Instagram,” she said.

The top 10 complaints are:

“Online scammers can face up to five years in prison or a 10,000 baht fine under the Criminal Code and up to 100,000 baht fine under the Computer-Related Crime Act,” Ratchada said.

“Safari World” tourist attraction in Bangkok reopened to visitors on Saturday (October 9) after more than six months of shutting down due to Covid-19 situation.

“The park has employed Covid-19 preventive measures to ensure the safety of all visitors,” said Rit Kiewrucha, managing director of Safari World Plc. “We have installed thermal scanners and alcohol hand sanitizers at entrances of each zone, while the animal show areas have reduced visitors to only 2,000 per round (from original 5,000 per round), to maintain social distancing practice.”

“Furthermore, all employees of the park have been vaccinated at two doses and received antigen testing before coming to work,” he added.

Rit further added that before the pandemic, over 80 per cent of Safari World’s customers are foreign tourists. “Due to global travel restrictions we have to adjust our strategies to attract domestic travelers, including opening an outdoor photo studio where visitors can take pictures with their favorite animals such as tiger cubs, birds, camels, and giraffes,” he added.

Safari World consists of two parks named Marine Park and Safari Park, opened in 1988 with a total area of 480 acres (190 ha) for its open zoo and 180 acres (73 ha) for its bird park. It hires more than 1,000 staffers to take care of over 50,000 animals including zebras, elephants, wildebeests, impalas, white rhinoceros, hippopotamus, ostriches, spotted deer, lions, Bengal tigers and variety of birds.

Animal shows at Marine Park are now opening only on Friday, weekends, and holidays, while the Safari Park opens daily from 9am to 5pm.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Monday (October 11) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 10,035 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 80 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 60, while 10,590 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

The country’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,720,919 – 1,592,903 of whom have recovered, 110,265 are still in hospitals and 17,751 have died.

Separately, another 311,265 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 345,437 their second shot and 31,779 a booster, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 60,228,105.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 238.66 million on Monday, 215.86 million of whom have recovered, 17.93 million are active cases (82,517 in severe condition) and 4.87 million have died (up by 4,584).

Thailand ranks 24th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 45.20 million, followed by India with 33.97 million, Brazil with 21.58 million, the UK with 8.15 million and Russia with 7.78 million.

Police have confiscated 320,973 motorcycles used in illegal street racing throughout the country since the start of 2021, Deputy National Police Chief Pol General Damrongsak Kittipraphas said on Sunday (October 10).

“Charges of violating Traffic Act have been filed against over 3,000 street racers and over 1,000 motorcycle shops for performing illegal modifications,” he said. “Meanwhile, over 40,000 parents were charged with violating Child Protection Act for letting their children participating in illegal street racing, either as racers or spectators.”

“So far, 1,201,288 people have been charged with Traffic Act violations, while 157,548 people have their offences recorded in the police’s CRIME database,” he added. “Of these, 241 cases with 283 offenders have been tracked down by the police using CCTV technology.”

Damrongsak added that the police have also set up a fund of 400,000 Baht as reward for anyone who gives a tip-off of illegal street racing. Tip givers will be awarded 3,000 Baht when the information they gave can lead to the arrest.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Monday (October 11) that the strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, the South and the Gulf of Thailand while tropical depression “LIONROCK” covers upper Laos.

More rain forecast over Thailand with isolated heavy rain in the North, the upper Northeast and the East. People in risky areas should beware of severe condition and rain accumulation that may cause flash flood and overflow. Waves in the Andaman Sea are 2-3 meters high and over 3 meters high in thundershowers. All ships should proceed with caution and keep off thundershowers, while small boats should keep ashore.

The department also mentioned that the tropical storm “KOMPASU” over the Pacific Ocean or the eastern Philippines has no effect on Thailand’s weather.

Two men were arrested after rangers at Prachin Buri’s Thap Lan National Park after real-time cameras installed around the park captured them walking around with weapons at around midnight on Saturday.

The rangers eventually hunted them down at the edge of the forest some three hours later.

The suspects allegedly confessed they had entered the park to hunt wild animals. Rangers confiscated two pistols, bullets, 26 snares (one with a wild boar’s leg), two motorbikes and several other devices from the suspects.

The detainees will be handed over to Wang Khon Daeng Police Station for further action.

The officials said many real-time cameras have been installed around the park because poachers often set snares and traps for wild animals there.

In a bid to generate income for locals and boost tourism, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has decided to make the Khlong Ong Ang walking street accessible every weekend from October 15.

The street will be open to tourists every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 3pm to 8pm, Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang said.

He added that the market will operate under strict control measures, including getting all vendors to undergo a weekly Covid-19 test. They will also be required to clearly display their identification and test results.

Visitors can also go on a 30-minute kayaking trip down the canal. The authorities have set aside 15 kayaks and queue cards can be picked up at the pier opposite Saphan Lek Square, near Damrongsathit Bridge. The service wraps up at 7pm.

Apart from shopping and kayaking, visitors can also enjoy concerts, plays and art exhibitions.
