Trat authorities will conduct a second, more detailed, survey to gauge residents’ opinions on a planned bridge linking Koh Chang to the mainland. The first survey on the project was conducted four years ago and construction of the bridge is scheduled to kick off in 2023.

Somkiat Smattakarn, president of Trat’s Natural Resources Conservation and Environmental Protection Association, said on Wednesday that the aim is to collect the opinions of people living in Laem Ngop district on the mainland and Koh Chang islanders.

“The first survey showed that 90 per cent of people living in both areas wanted the bridge as it will make travel more convenient, especially when it comes to transporting patients at night and reducing traffic during high season,” he said.

Koh Chang residents will be surveyed later this month and those in Laem Ngop next month. The data collected will then be handed over to the Trat Rural Roads Office, so it can earmark funds.

“The 10-kilometre-long bridge will run between Laem Ngop district, near the Koh Chang Naval War Memorial, and Koh Chang’s Ban Dan Kao area,” Somkiat said.

As many as 80 Thais and foreigners quarantined at a hotel in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district ran for their lives on Wednesday night after a fire broke out in the hotel’s storage room.

Firefighters from Rachathewa Subdistrict Administrative Organisation and other agencies nearby took over 30 minutes to distinguish the flame.

Initially, officials expected that the cause of the flame was due to a short circuit because many electric wires were melted.

A study conducted by the Department of Mental Health reveals that students are under undue stress due to online classes.

The department’s director-general Amporn Benjaponpitak said a survey of 2,045 students between August 19 and 25 found 29.29 per cent were stressed and 16.67 per cent felt three times more “burned out” than adults.

Amporn said the biggest cause of this was the lack of social interaction. School closure is also getting children more addicted to video games and mobile phones.

Hence, Amporn said, the Education Ministry must speed up the vaccination of youngsters to avoid cluster cases once schools reopen.

He also urged parents and teachers to explain the benefits and side-effects of Covid-19 vaccines to help children decide if they want to go for a jab.

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul agreed that the closure of schools is affecting children’s behaviour, emotions and social skills.

Molnupiravir, the special Covid-19 pills being procured from US drug manufacturer Merck & Co, will not cost 24,000 baht per course as some reports suggest, Medical Services Department director-general Dr Somsak Ankasil said on Wednesday.

“This amount was based on the pricing in high-income countries. The pills sold in Thailand will be cheaper,” he said.

“However, we cannot reveal the price at the moment due to contract restrictions.”

200,000 courses of the experimental antiviral drug and the first batch is expected to arrive in Thailand by late November or early December.

Patients with mild symptoms will be given a course of 40 Molnupiravir pills to take over five days.

Molnupiravir is among several anti-coronavirus drugs currently undergoing Phase 2 and 3 trials overseas. Results of the Phase 3 trial for Molnupiravir – the first antiviral drug specifically developed to fight Covid-19 – are expected by the end of October.

Merck & Co reportedly aims to manufacture enough Molnupiravir courses for 10 million patients within this year and is planning to outsource the production to drugmakers in India to come up with cheaper versions for mid- to low-income countries.

“This pill is suitable for patients with mild to medium symptoms who have other underlying health problems. Pregnant women, however, are not advised to take it,” Somsak said. “The Public Health Ministry will determine whether Molnupiravir will replace Favipiravir that is currently being used or if both will be used together.”

Uthai Youngpraphakorn, founder of Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo has died at 96, facebook @CheckinSamutprakan said on Wednesday.

The post did not reveal the cause of death.

The funeral rites will be held at the memorial opposite the zoo until October 11.
 

Uthai was well-known among Samut Prakan locals for turning a crocodile farm into a world-famous tourist attraction. Established in 1950, Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo is located in Thai Ban subdistrict and is at present the world’s largest crocodile farm, where more than 60,000 crocodiles of various sizes are bred. The zoo provides a home for tigers, chimpanzees, gibbons, turtles, snakes, birds, camels, hippopotamus, deer, and schools of fish, as well.

A crowd control police was shot in the head during a clash with anti-government protestors in Soi Ton Pho near Din Daeng Flat in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district on night of Wednesday (October 6).

“The injured officer was sent to Police General Hospital. His condition is still critical,” said deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police, Pol General Krisana Pattanacharoen.

Krisana added that the protestors had gathered at Soi Mitmaitree 2 near Din Daeng Flat at around 8pm of Wednesday while crowd control police have been deployed around the areas to control the situation. 

“Protestors threw firecrackers and ping pong bombs at police officers periodically until around midnight, when several gunshots were heard in Soi Ton Pho, after which one officer was found shot,” he said. “After sending injured officer to the hospital, crowd control police have arrested 16 protestors and confiscated several items of weapons, including firecrackers, ping pong bombs, improvised explosive devices and slingshots.”

“For your safety, please do not leave your home at night as the curfew during emergency situation is still in effect,” warned Krisana.

Ministry of Public Health reported on Thursday (October 7) morning that in the past 24 hours there are 11,200 new patients who tested positive for Covid-19, 138 of whom have been found in prisons.

Death toll increased by 113, while 10,087 patients were cured and allowed to leave hospitals.

The country’s total caseload from Covid-19 stands at 1,678,297 – 1,551,857 of whom have recovered, 109,022 are still in hospitals and 17,418 have died.

Separately, another 268,797 people were given their first Covid-19 shot in the last 24 hours, 409,806 their second shot and 52,204 a booster, bringing the total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered nationwide to 57,387,052.

According to Worldometer, confirmed cases globally had risen to 237.09 million on Thursday, 214.26 million of whom have recovered, 17.99 million are active cases (84,891 in severe condition) and 4.84 million have died (up by 8,194).

Thailand ranks 26th in the global list of most cases, which is topped by the US with 44.91 million, followed by India with 33.89 million, Brazil with 21.52 million, the UK with 8.01 million and Russia with 7.66 million.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said on Thursday (October 7) that the rather strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand while the tropical depression covers the middle South China Sea. Thundershowers are forecast over the country with isolated heavy rain in the Central, the lower Northeast, the East and the South. People in risky areas should beware of severe condition and rain accumulation that may cause flash flood and overflow.

The department also mentioned that waves in the Andaman Sea are 2-3 meters high and over 3 meters high in thundershowers. It suggested that all ships should proceed with caution and keep off thundershowers, while small boats should keep ashore.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is as follows:

North: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the areas; temperature lows of 23-25 degrees and highs of 33-36 degrees Celsius. 

Northeast: Thundershowers in 40 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rain; temperature lows of 23-26 degrees and highs of 32-33 degrees Celsius. 

Central: Thundershowers in 70 per cent of the areas with isolated heavy rain; temperature lows of 23-26 degrees, highs of 31-35 degrees Celsius.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration deputy permanent secretary Suthathip Son-iam has advised residents around Maha Sawat canal to closely monitor the water level after he visited the area to inspect a flood prevention line along the canal, Taling Chan and Thawi Watthana District.

The water level at Khlong Maha Sawat station is at 1.48 metres, which is still 1.52 metres below the dam level, so it has not affected the area in both districts yet.

Suthathip said these areas are flood watch points because the whole area is low-lying. Another problem is the abundance of water hyacinth and weeds in the canal.

The BMA is working with the Royal Irrigation Department to collect weeds in open waterways to increase the efficiency of drainage from canals.

The State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO) handed over to the state public revenue amounting to THB160.07 billion for fiscal year 2021 (October 2020-September 2021), director Pantip Sripimon revealed.

The revenue was collected from state-owned enterprises and businesses in which the Finance Ministry owned shares of below 50 per cent.

The collected money is higher than the expected estimate of THB159.8 billion.

Overall, state-owned enterprises have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis. SEPO said it had requested the enterprises for cooperation to continue delivering state revenues in accordance with budget documents and received “good cooperation” from the enterprises and the Vayupak Fund 1, which submitted additional dividends in September 2021.

The NESDB expects to collect public revenue of THB142.8 billion in fiscal year 2022 as state enterprises will still be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
