Hunt on for king cobras in Trang after over 20 seen last week

Locals in Trang province on Monday evening set up nets along the roads in Khok Kor village, in Banpho subdistrict, where over 20 king cobras have reportedly been sighted since last week, while one person was reportedly killed by snakebite.

Chokechai Phraethanareung, head of Trang emergency medical response team, said on Tuesday that so far the netting had proved to be ineffective as no snakes have been caught in them.

“We will consider using other kinds of bait to catch the snakes, such as chicks,” he added.

Chokechai added that king cobra is one of the most dangerous snakes that can hunt many kinds of prey, including other snakes.

“King cobras are fast and can even climb trees. When facing the snake, one should remain calm and try not to move suddenly,” he said. “Instead, back away from it as slowly as possible. Most of the time, if you stand still, the snake will move along on its way as it senses that you are not a threat.”

“If you see a king cobra in your area, contact officials immediately and do not try to catch it yourself,” he added.

Thailand on course for 300,000 jabs on 1st day of rollout

Thailand was on course to administer around 300,00 anti-Covid vaccinations on Monday, the first day of the national jab rollout. The Department of Disease Control (DDC) said 143,116 people had been vaccinated as of midday on Monday.

Thailand on course for 300,000 jabs on 1st day of rollout

DDC chief Opas Karnkawinpong said the rollout was going smoothly with no crowding at a total of 986 vaccination sites around the country. However, some lists of people who had registered via the Mor Prom app were missing, he added. Staff at vaccination sites were able to solve the problem by downloading the app to check the information.

Among those jabbed on Monday were 73,273 people aged over 60, 21,924 people with chronic diseases, and 12,081 health personnel including volunteers.

Opas added that some areas may encounter problems with hospitals postponing vaccination appointments because the number of bookings exceeds their vaccine quota.

“I would like to apologise to people who didn’t get the vaccination on the scheduled date,” he said.

The vaccination site at Bang Sue Grand Station reports it has jabbed 155,028 people between May 24 and June 6. On average, a vaccination at Bang Sue station takes 51 minutes.

The Private Hospital Association has ordered 10 million doses of Moderna vaccine from the GPO. It expects the first batch of 4 million doses to arrive in October, followed by another 1 million doses at the beginning of 2022. The remaining 5 million doses will be shipped in batches later next year.

Thonburi Healthcare Group (THG) revealed it had received more than 800,000 applications for Moderna vaccination since registration opened at the beginning of this month.

More than 200 cases of Indian Delta variant found in Bangkok

An outbreak of Covid-19 at a construction workers’ camp in Bangkok has spawned 206 cases of the Indian Delta variant, the Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) said on Monday.

More than 200 cases of Indian Delta variant found in Bangkok

The 206 cases were found at a construction camp in Lak Si district, according to DMS chief Supakit Sirilak. They are among a total 235 cases of the Delta variant discovered around the country.

Two apiece were found in Nonthaburi and Phitsanulok, all linked to the Lak Si camp. Other provinces where the Delta variant has been detected are Nakhon Ratchasima (2 cases), Saraburi (2), Buri Ram (1), Ubon Ratchathani (1), Samut Songkhram (1) and Roi Et (1).

Another 17 cases linked to the Lak Si camp are under investigation in Udon Thani.

The Delta strain is thought to be at least 40 per cent more transmissible than Alpha variant or UK strain.

The UK variant still accounts for 90 per cent of all infections in Thailand, according to recent lab analysis of 3,595 cases, Supakit said.

So far, the country has seen only 26 cases of the South African or Beta variant, all of which were found in Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province.

Thailand orders 25 million doses of J&J and Pfizer vaccine

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha kicked off Thailand’s delayed mass vaccination drive on Monday by insisting there would be enough jabs to cover the whole population. He added that Thailand had ordered 20 million doses of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and 5 million Pfizer vaccine.

Thailand orders 25 million doses of J&J and Pfizer vaccine

Prayut made the pledge on a visit to Bang Sue Central Station, Bangkok’s main vaccination hub. The premier said more locally made AstraZeneca jabs and Chinese Sinovac vaccine would also be available soon.

The government aims to vaccinate 50 million people or 70 per cent of the population to achieve herd immunity by the end of this year.

Vaccine supplies to each province would vary according to their infection rate, the PM added.

Vaccination is being offered at hospitals, health centres and public buildings across the country, though limited supply of vaccines means some areas have received fewer doses than expected.

The government has signed a contract for 20 million doses of J&J and 5 million Pfizer vaccine, Prayut said. It had also ordered 8 million more doses of Sinovac, in line with the plan to secure 100 million doses for Thailand. Prayut said the arrival date of vaccines would be revealed once negotiations with the makers were complete.

Thailand marks World Oceans Day by urging all Thais to conserve precious marine life #SootinClaimon.Com

Thailand marks World Oceans Day by urging all Thais to conserve precious marine life

Thailand is marking World Oceans Day on June 8 (Tuesday) by showcasing the incredible diversity of life in Thai seas while calling on all people to protect it for future generations.

Thailand marks World Oceans Day by urging all Thais to conserve precious marine life

Varawut Silpa-archa, Natural Resources and Environment minister, said there were limitations on how much the government alone could protect the marine ecosystem, but added the challenges could be overcome with the help and cooperation of the Thai people.

Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a renowned marine scholar from Kasetsart University, said management of Thailand’s marine resources was relatively stable, particularly in the conservation and care of marine mammals.

However, many conservation issues need urgent attention and require cooperation from government, the Thai people and communities if sustainability is to be achieved, he added.

He explained that Thai seas are home to more than 28 species of marine mammals, divided into two groups. The first group are mammals that live close to shore and are often seen. This group consists of seven species: dugongs, Bryde’s whales, Omura’s whales, Irrawaddy dolphins, finless porpoises, Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins. The second group lives in the open sea and includes blue whales, sperm whales, short-finned pilot whales, Fraser’s dolphins, spinner dolphins and long-beaked common dolphins.

Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said oceans are the most difficult natural resource to manage because they are both an economic driver and key component in maintaining balance in the ecosystem. He pointed out that destructive human activities are upsetting this delicate natural balance.

Varawut added that on visits to marine areas he had observed that locals are becoming more involved in conservation because they feel responsible for maintaining marine resources for the generations that follow them.

The minister has assigned his adviser, Yutthaphon Ankinandana, and ministry permanent secretary Jatuporn Buruspat to accelerate the effort to manage marine resources in collaboration with local government agencies, businesses and locals. The effort is being overseen by Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan in his role as chairman of the Policy and Planning Committee for Marine and Coastal Resources Management.

“Save the oceans to sustain livelihoods” is Thailand’s slogan for World Oceans Day, chosen from competition entrants. It echoes the United Nations’ theme this year: “The Ocean: Live and Livelihoods” the theme set by the United Nations.
