The Royal Thai Army’s drug suppression operations throughout last year saw 181.93 million methamphetamine pills and 2,875 kilograms of crystal meth or “ice” seized, an RTA spokeswoman said on Monday.

RTA deputy spokeswoman Maj-General Sirichan Ngathong told a press conference that seven Army territorial protection forces along the borders carried out patrols and monitoring operations by joining forces with police and Interior Ministry officials from January 1 to December 21 last year. The operations led to 1,052 drug traffickers being arrested.

During the year-long operations, the border security forces seized 181.933 million meth pills, 201,617 ecstasy pills, 2,875kg of ice, 51.29kg of heroin, 441.90kg of ketamine, and 47.16kg of raw opium, the spokeswoman said.

She said the seizure of the drugs were higher compared to 2021. Meth pills seized were 1.25 times the previous year’s quantity, ecstasy pills by 5.66 times, and ketamine by 2.09 times.

She added that each border force would analyse its own arrest data to try to improve monitoring against drug smuggling.

She added that the border security forces had also been stepping up monitoring during the New Year holidays.

Phuket tourism revs up, 12 million arrivals expected this year

TUESDAY, JANUARY 03, 2023

Phuket expects to welcome 12 million domestic and foreign tourists this year, marking an 85% recovery from 14 million visitors in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit Thailand.

The Thai Hotels Association Southern Chapter said on Tuesday that China’s move to lift travel restrictions on January 8 will see almost 1 million Chinese tourists visiting the island by mid this year.

“Of the 12 million travellers expected to visit Phuket in 2023, 8 million will be foreigners and 4 million from within the country,” the association’s chairman Sueksit Suwanditthakul said.

He said Phuket is counting on visitors from China, India, Australia and the Middle East during the low season, and in preparation, hotels in the province have started recruiting staff.

“The occupancy rate of hotels in Phuket is expected to be 80% from January to February before declining to 70% in March,” he said.

Sueksit went on to say that Phuket welcomed 8.5 million visitors last year, 4.5 million of whom were foreign arrivals.

He said the hotel occupancy rate on the island from January to November last year was 45%. He added that judging by the occupancy in December, he expects hotels to be 76% full because most foreigners stay in Phuket for at least a week or two.

“In November, Phuket saw a surge in Russian tourists, or 27% of all foreign arrivals, followed by India [11%], Singapore [6%], Australia [5%] and the United Kingdom [5%],” he said.

He added that December saw 6,730 flights land at Phuket International Airport, 3,000 of which were international flights.

“Phuket’s daily average for flights in December was 217 or about 50% of the 450 flights per day average in 2019,” he added.

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

The Thai economy should return to the pre-pandemic level by mid this year thanks to the recovery of the tourism sector and private consumption, the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) reckons.

The agency said on Monday that it believes the economy will expand by 3.8% this year.

“However, there is still the risk of declines in export due to rising production costs and high-interest rates,” EECO said.

The economy expanded by 4.5% in the third quarter of last year, it said

“Investment in production and construction sectors in the third quarter of last year rose despite rising production costs,” it said.

EECO said the operators of 376 projects in industries targeted for the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) have won investments worth 247 billion baht for the first nine months of last year.

The target industries include next-generation automotives, medical and wellness tourism, agriculture, food for the future, robotics, aviation and logistics, biofuels and biochemicals, and digital technologies.

“Investment in these industries is expected to expand further,” EECO said.

It added that 77 factories worth 6.66 billion baht had been set up in the EEC in the third quarter last year, 13 of which worth 1.66 billion are located in Chachoengsao, 40 worth 2.43 billion baht in Chonburi and 24 worth 2.55 billion in Rayong.

Vaccine-resistant strains in West and China threaten Thailand: virologist

Vaccine-resistant strains in West and China threaten Thailand: virologist

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

Top virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan has urged the government to take action to defend Thailand against new Covid-19 variants spreading abroad. He spoke out after China announced it will lift travel restrictions next Monday, January 8, prompting concern among countries worldwide.

So far, Japan, India, Italy, Malaysia, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan and the US have imposed tighter requirements including negative Covid tests on travellers from China, where infection rates are soaring. However, Thailand has not tightened rules for Chinese visitors, who were its biggest overseas market before the pandemic struck in 2020.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Yong said the severity of Covid-19 in Thailand had dropped over the past three years as people gained immunity via vaccination and infection.

However, new subvariants spreading in Europe, the US and China are more resistant to vaccines. Therefore, Thailand needed to know which Covid-19 variant is spreading in each country, Yong said.

While Omicron BA.2.75 is still dominant in Thailand, the BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 subvariants spreading fast in the West have higher vaccine resistance, though they do not cause more severe symptoms than previous strains, he said.

Meanwhile, Omicron BF.7 and BA.5.2 subvariants found in China are spreading in Japan, said Yong, citing data from Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun published on December 26.

He said it would be impossible to prevent the spread of these new strains to Thailand unless all visitors were screened on arrival.

Instead, the best solution is to step up vaccination and hygiene guidelines and boost public awareness of the different strains and their dangers, Yong said.

Government agencies should also implement guidelines to address different Covid-19 species, their severity and their resistance to immunity, he added.

Al Nassr fans reacted with excitement on Saturday (December 31) after it was confirmed that Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has joined the Saudi Arabian side.

In a social media post the club said, “The world’s greatest athlete officially signed for Al Nassr”.

Speaking in the club shop where fans were already buying shirts with Ronaldo’s name and number on, Al Nassr fan Ashraf Allhammad said he hopes the signing will bring more recognition for the club.

“Hopefully this deal will be a success for Al Nassr and for the club’s future vision and marketing for the club with an international fame,” he said.

“Having Ronaldo will boost the value of the Saudi league, if you see the tweets and views for this matter, all foreigners talking about this deal,” said Khaled Almajed.

Thailand’s property sector unfazed by inflation, expects a profitable 2023

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

As many as 120,000 residential units are expected to be snapped up this year despite rising inflation, property firm Supalai said in its latest prediction.

Supalai director Prasas Tangmatitam said that listed real-estate companies had sold 115,902 units last year compared to 75,364 in 2021. He said this was a clear indicator of the property market’s expansion.

Prasas reckoned that the sale of property had risen because homebuyers in the 26-30 age group had not been affected by the economic fallout of the Covid-19 crisis.

He said he expects the Thai property market to regain confidence thanks to a pick up in tourism and investment since the third quarter of 2022.

He also said that the rising prices of construction materials and high mortgage rates triggered by inflation should not affect the property market much.

“Taking all factors into account, demand for new homes is expected to stand at 120,000 units this year,” he said.

Prasas said property firms will probably be working hard on promotions to woo young homebuyers this year to stimulate the sale of residences.

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

Mexican authorities said on Sunday at least 14 people died in an armed attack at a prison in the northern border city Juarez and two more died during a later armed aggression elsewhere in the city.

The Chihuahua state prosecutor said in a statement that among those who died in the prison attack were 10 security personnel and four inmates, while another 13 were hurt and at least 24 inmates escaped.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack.

An inmate’s relative who didn’t want to identify herself said all the attackers were in black and better armed than the police.

The prosecutor said initial investigations found the attackers arrived at around 7 a.m. local time at the prison in armoured vehicles and opened fire.

Minutes earlier, authorities had reported a nearby attack against municipal police. After a chase, four men were captured and a truck was seized.

In a different part of the city, two more drivers died later in the day following what authorities called armed aggression.

The state prosecutor did not specify whether the three incidents were related.

In August, hundreds of Mexican soldiers were sent to Juarez after a prison face-off between members of two rival cartels caused a riot and shootouts that killed 11 people, most of them civilians.

1.17 million 20-year-olds in Japan, fewest on record

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

Turning 20 used to mean becoming an adult in Japan, until the revised Civil Code went into effect in April 2022 to lower the age of adulthood to 18.

The number of people born in 2002 who have turned 20 as of Jan. 1, 2023, was at a record low of 1.17 million, according to an estimate by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. Of this number, there were 600,000 men and 570,000 women.

This was 60,000 people less than the estimate of 20-year-olds made at the same time last year.

As a percentage of Japan’s overall population of 124.77 million, 20-year-olds made up 0.93%, falling below 1% for the 13th consecutive year.

Estimates were also made this time for young adults born in 2003 who turned 19 and in 2004 who turned 18. There were 1.13 million 19-year-olds and 1.12 million 18-year-olds, meaning the total population of people who have become adults was about 3.41 million.

From 2024, the ministry will only estimate the number of people who turned 18.

EU’s von der Leyen, Croatian PM pay for coffee as Croatia begins using euro

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic settled the bill for coffee at a Zagreb cafe on Sunday as Croatia began to use the euro as its official currency.

Von der Leyen and Plenkovic were seen looking at euro coins newly-minted in Croatia, and Plenkovic handed over euro notes to pay for coffees for delegations of the European Commission and Croatian government.

Croatia entered the EU in 2013. It became the 27th country to join the Schengen area, and the 20th to adopt the euro currency on Sunday.

People in Zagreb said the switch to euros might make life easier, but said it would take time to get used to the change in prices. A euro was worth around 7.53 kuna just before the change came in.

Zagreb resident Pero Novakovic said it was confusing that seemingly smaller amounts of money were in fact worth more, while Snjizana Pantos said it was good that she would not have to change currencies when travelling to other eurozone countries.

Earlier, von der Leyen and Plenkovic met Slovenian President Natasa Pirc Musar at the Croatia-Slovenia border to celebrate the end of passport controls between Croatia and other Schengen countries.

Brazil’s Lula swears in as President for third term

MONDAY, JANUARY 02, 2023

Leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in as president of Brazil on Sunday under tightened security in the capital Brasilia following threats of violence by supporters of his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro.

In a speech to Congress, Lula said those responsible for anti-democratic acts would be held accountable, though he did not mention his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro.

After the swearing-in, Lula was due to drive in an open-top Rolls-Royce to the Planalto palace to don the presidential sash before a crowd of 30,000 supporters, while tens of thousands gathered to celebrate on Brasilia’s esplanade.

The mood in the city was tense after the most fraught election in a generation.

Lula, 77, narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in October to win an unprecedented third presidential term after a hiatus that saw him spend a year and a half behind bars on corruption convictions that were later overturned.

His 580 days in prison reinforced his sense of social justice and convinced him of the need to prioritize ending poverty over boosting profits, allies said.

In his previous years as Workers Party (PT) president from 2003-2010, the former union leader lifted millions of Brazilians from poverty during a commodity boom that buoyed the economy.

Now, he faces the daunting challenge of improving Brazil’s stagnant economy while also uniting a country that has become painfully polarized under Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro left Brazil for Florida on Friday, avoiding having to hand over the sash to his rival, whose victory he has yet to recognize, while also removing himself from any immediate legal risks related to his time in office.

His supporters have protested for two months that the election was stolen and called for a military coup to stop Lula from returning to office in a climate of vandalism and violence.

Police detained a man on Sunday who was carrying fireworks and a knife and tried to enter the esplanade for the inauguration, Brasilia police said.

As tens of thousands of Lula supporters arrived in central Brasilia for Sunday’s celebrations, authorities deployed 10,000 police and troops to reinforce security and search participants, who cannot bring bottles, cans, flag masts or toy guns. Carrying firearms by civilians was also temporarily banned.

Organizers said delegations from 50 nations and 19 heads of state and governments, including the king of Spain, have confirmed their attendance, including Argentinian President Alberto Fernandez and the Colombian counterpart Gustavo Petro.
