Chiang Mai has been bustling with both Thai and Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year break, with many hotels boasting 90% occupancy.

The northern capital also expects to earn as much as 1 billion baht in revenue during this period.

This year, Chiang Mai is holding the Trok Lao Zho festival in Chinatown, while the municipality has also set up the Warorat Market in Muang district. The city, where most residents are ethnic Chinese, has burst into colour for Chinese New Year after celebrations were suspended for two years during the pandemic.Chiang Mai expects up to 1 billion baht in tourist revenue during Chinese New Year break

The Year of the Rabbit will be welcomed with celebrations in Chinatown on Sunday and Monday, including dragon and lion dances as well as a Mr and Miss Chinatown beauty pageant. More than 100 food stalls have also been put up in the area.

Assanee Buranupakorn, mayor of Chiang Mai Municipality, said the Chinatown festival has attracted many foreigners, especially Chinese tourists. He said the municipality expects revenue of at least 1 billion baht to be generated during the Chinese New Year holidays.Chiang Mai expects up to 1 billion baht in tourist revenue during Chinese New Year break

La-iad Boonsrithong, an advisor to the Thai Hotels Association, said up to 90% of Chiang Mai’s 40,000 hotel rooms have been occupied. Though the situation has not reached pre-Covid levels, Chiang Mai’s tourism industry has improved a great deal, she said.Chiang Mai expects up to 1 billion baht in tourist revenue during Chinese New Year breakChiang Mai expects up to 1 billion baht in tourist revenue during Chinese New Year break

Thailand among 23 ‘best places to visit’ in the world this year

SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2023

Thailand has been included in this year’s Insider.com list of 23 best travel destinations in the world.

In an article published on January 1, the website’s news and lifestyle editor Alesandra Dubin explained what these 23 destinations had to offer, though she did not rank them in a “best of” category.

Thailand was the 12th destination to be mentioned after Bhutan, Western Australia, the Cayman Islands, Dubai, France’s Loire Valley, Japan, Las Vegas, Bali in Indonesia, Merida in Mexico, Canouan Island in the Caribbean, and Turkey.

“Coming to Thailand for the first time in 2023 is America’s hip-hop music festival, Rolling Loud, which will be held at the Legend Siam Amusement Park in Pattaya in April. At the same time is Songkran, the festival of water that symbolises the cleansing of spirit and body,” she wrote.

“I’m also continually impressed by the number of luxury hotels in Bangkok, and Rosewood Bangkok recently reopened in the prime business and retail district of Ploenchit, which I think is an ideal destination for shoppers and foodies.”

Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said on Sunday that the premier is overjoyed that Thailand has shown up on the radar of the American online media.

He quoted Prayut Chan-o-cha as saying that Thailand has been a popular destination among foreign tourists, and thanked Thais for playing good, kind hosts to foreigners.

“The PM believes Thailand has the potential to attract as many as 20 million tourists this year,” Anucha said. “This will bring income to the provinces and help make the Thai economy expand more sustainably.”

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2023

Thailand is among the 20 countries that China has chosen to allow the resumption of group tours from February 6.

The Chinese Culture and Tourism Ministry on Friday gave travel agencies the go-ahead to start marketing package tours to the 20 countries. This decision was reported by the Chinese news agency Xinhua and the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok.

According to the embassy’s Facebook page, the 20 countries in this pilot project are Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Maldives, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, Russia, Switzerland, Hungary, New Zealand, Fiji, Cuba and Argentina.

Thailand has seen an influx of Chinese tourists after China dropped the requirement for mandatory quarantine for inbound travellers from January 8. Since the requirement was lifted, Chinese travellers have been arriving in small groups.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects some 5 million arrivals from China this year. In 2019, the year before the pandemic hit the global tourism industry, Thailand welcomed 11 million tourists from China, accounting for more than a quarter of 40 million foreign visitors that year.

As many as 240 flights from China are scheduled to land in Thailand during the Chinese New Year break, from January 19 to 25, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand president Nopasit Chakpitak said.

He added that an average of 34 flights daily will be landing in Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, and Phuket and Chiang Mai international airports during the Chinese New Year period.

AeroThai estimates that the month of January will see a total of 1,160 flights from China, far fewer than the 12,209 flights recorded in January 2019.

In its announcement, China’s Tourism and Culture Ministry instructed provincial administrations to ensure that all Chinese travellers are safe and follow Covid-19 guidelines, the embassy said.

The local bodies have also been instructed to ensure that all package tours are in line with the law and do not include “unreasonably cheap tours”. This was an apparent reference to the so-called “zero-dollar tours”, which hit the Thai tourism industry hard years ago before a large-scale crackdown in 2016.

Zero-dollar tourism involves very cheap package tours in which Chinese tourists are taken on shopping trips to buy overpriced products. The hotels, restaurants, shops and bus services involved in these tours are normally operated by the same group of businesspeople, mostly Chinese, in cooperation with their Thai partners or nominees.

Paetongtarn “Ung Ing” Shinawatra, chief of Pheu Thai Party’s Family Project, and property tycoon Srettha Thaivisin made their first campaign stop together in Bangkok’s Yaowarat area on Saturday.

It is believed that both of them will be nominated as the opposition party’s prime ministerial candidates for the upcoming general election.

Srettha, who is president of top real-estate developer Sansiri, spoke to many business and community leaders in the area. The discussions were mostly focused on economic and inequality issues.

During the chat, Gold Traders Association President Jitti Tangsitpakdee advised Pheu Thai to come up with a plan to make Yaowarat Road more attractive to tourists.

Srettha responded by saying though Yaowarat Road is already popular among tourists, it needs to be further developed with the support of the Tourism and Sports Ministry and the Thai Hotels Association.

Visit Limprana, the owner of spice distribution company Nguan Soon, also said that closing Yaowarat’s street market every Monday was affecting food hawkers badly. He said the street should be closed for cleaning once a month instead.

Paetongtarn said Yaowarat Road’s development should be well-planned and gradual.

“Pheu Thai is paying close attention to people’s livelihoods and the economy, alongside politics,” she said, adding that the party can start working on some issues immediately.

She also told voters in the area that they can be confident the party will choose high-quality candidates to participate in the upcoming general election, which is tentatively scheduled for May 7.

Government move on AIDS meds a backward step in fighting HIV, say private clinics

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2023

In December, the Health Ministry issued a decree that private clinics could no longer hand out PrEP and PEP medicines, which are used as drugs to reduce the chances of contracting HIV from sex or drug use.

The move by the ministry has created an obstacle for patients, and added to the workload of many public hospitals.

The Health Ministry sent out letters to private clinics stating that PEP/PrEP drugs should be handed out only at the discretion of a doctor and pharmacist, despite these clinics having doctors overseeing the process.

The decision is seen as a cost-saving measure, cutting government expenditure on private healthcare services, resulting in commercial and non-profit clinics not being able to provide these drugs for free.

The Rainbow Sky Association is one of many private clinics providing healthcare services, such as blood tests for STDs and giving out PEP and PrEP drugs, following Thailand’s national strategy to end AIDS by 2030.

Government move on AIDS meds a backward step in fighting HIV, say private clinics

Phubet Panpet, Deputy Director for Health Service Provision, Rainbow Sky Association of Thailand told The Nation that “We’ve explained that every process is done under a doctor’s care but we’re registered as a Medical Technology clinic and aren’t registered as a place to store medicine we still haven’t received an answer as to where they want the drugs to be stored, the hospital? Or can people choose to come here and receive their medication from somewhere else?”

There’s no current timeline on how clear things will become regarding the decision, as the government has barred clinics from giving out the drugs.

Phubet also added that “We need answers on how we can help people who previously have used our services to be able to still receive PrEP / PEP. Public hospitals that they mentioned in the decree, if we work under public hospitals and have pharmacists with our clinic helping to make the process easier, how can we work together? We want guidelines, rather than saying we can’t do it”

With every minute ticking by, many lives are at risk of this drug being difficult to access.

How can Thailand achieve its national strategy of ending AIDS by 2030 if these drugs, which help prevent the spread of HIV, are not easily accessible? Are we moving backward? Will the Ministry of Health be able to give people the easy way out for their health and well-being?

SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2023

A suspected Muslim insurgent was severely injured after a homemade bomb exploded while he was allegedly trying to plant it at a water-pumping station in Yala’s Muang district early on Sunday.

The explosion occurred at 1:30 am at the water-pumping station, police said.

They said security camera footage in the area showed two men arriving at the station on a motorcycle.

The footage showed one man getting off the back of the motorcycle and carrying a metal paint can into the station.

Once the bomb exploded, the motorcycle driver raced from the scene, police said.

Police said the suspect’s left arm was broken and his face was severely burned by the explosion.

Police said they suspect the pair wanted to damage the main water pumps of the station but the bomb accidentally exploded before it was installed.

At 8 am on Sunday, a team of bomb disposal and forensic science police examined the scene with soldiers.

Based on fragments of the bomb, the team estimated that it carried between five and 10 kilogrammes of gunpowder. Police said the goal was to detonate it remotely, but the plan failed.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2023

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn gave a blessing to mark the Chinese New Year with an illustration posted on the Facebook page of her non-profit, Phufa.

The illustration depicts a rabbit and a dog with a full moon in the background to signify the arrival of the Year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese calendar.

The illustration differed from HRH Princess Sirindhorn’s greeting card to mark the January 1 New Year. For Chinese New Year, the rabbit was coloured green to align with the Princess’s blessing in Chinese: “Jade rabbit brings prosperity.”

“In the Chinese belief system, jade brings prosperity and wealth,” Phufa said, “Anyone who owns jade ornaments will have good luck and a long life,” it added.

Phufa is a poverty alleviation organisation that, among other projects, provides sales channels for rural artisans to sell their products at upscale malls as well as online.

The illustration and message from the princess was first posted on the Phufa Facebook page on January 12.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2023

Two of the three police officers who allegedly provided “special services” to a Chinese tourist have been transferred, Royal Thai Police said.

Spokesman Pol Maj-General Atchayon Kraithong said on Saturday that the National Police chief ordered an investigation into claims by a Chinese tourist that she received “special services” from Thai police – for a price. The tourist’s TikTok clip of her “special” police escort to Pattaya has gone viral.

The tourist claimed that upon arrival, she was fast-tracked through immigration and then rushed through traffic to her hotel in the resort town. The trip took only one hour when it can take up to three hours in traffic. Apparently, a police siren was used during the trip and she claims it cost her no more than 7,000 baht.

Atchayon said police officers in the clip include one tourist police officer and two traffic police officers.

The tourist police officer was identified as Pol Captain Sompol Pinyosamosorn, while the other two were identified as Pol Sergeant Thanakorn Nukulthanakit and Pol Sergeant Thanawat Simakachonboon, Atchayon said.

Both tourist and traffic police are investigating the case, he said, adding that the two traffic police officers have been transferred to the traffic police operation centre.

“The National Police chief Pol General Damrongsak Kittiprapas has ordered a thorough investigation to clarify the case to the public,” he said.

Fire leaves 3 Bangkok families homeless in Yannawa district

SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2023

Three families living in Bangkok’s Yannawa district were left homeless on Saturday after their rented wooden houses were destroyed by a fire.

One person was injured after being cut by a shard of glass during the blaze, which erupted in an alley off Rama III Road.

It took firefighters about half an hour to contain the fire.

Prachak Tienkhunthod, a resident of the house where the fire is believed to have started, said that he had put out joss sticks before leaving his home to drive his wife to work in the morning.

He said he had left his electric fan and refrigerator plugged in but was unsure if a short circuit had occurred.

A neighbour, who declined to be identified, said smoke came out of Prachak’s house in the morning and expanded to two nearby wooden houses within five minutes.

No members of the three families living in the houses were at home during the fire, the neighbour said.

Yannawa District Office registered the families as fire victims for assistance.
