Community-based tourism (CBT), an emerging form of sustainable tourism, empowers local residents by allowing their participation in developing tourism products and returns the profits to the community.

The Asean Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2016-2025 suggests invigorating community participation as a way to encourage sustainable and inclusive tourism among member states. In continued efforts to promote community-based tourism, Asean has set up the Asean CBT Standard and grants Asean CBT awards to local communities that achieves the high standards of excellence.

To support this effort, the Asean-Korea Centre (AKC) has organised the “Community-based Tourism Programme: 2019 in Vietnam, following the success of previous programs in Malaysia (2015), Brunei (2016), Thailand (2017), and Indonesia (2018).

The programme aims to promote Vietnam’s CBT and introduce its hidden tourist attraction to the South Korean public and international tourists.

The trip, in which journalists, youtubers, travel essayists and other content creators are participating kicked off yesterday and runs through Friday.

The visitors will get to experience Vietnamese traditional culture, including the daily lives of the different ethnic minorities.

At the end of the programne, their first-hand experience of traditional housing, batik and paper making of the H’mong ethnic group, traditional cuisine, and outdoor activities such as hiking in Pu Luong nature reserve and kayaking on the Da Reservoir will be introduced to the Korean public in feature articles and videos.

“Mai Chau Village, situated about 75 km from Hanoi in Hoa Binh Province, received the Asean Community-based Tourism Award in 2017, in recognition of the community’s efforts to protect the natural environment and develop sustainable tourism in the region. I hope this programme enhance understanding of CBT and thus advocate for sustainable development in Asean.”

A picture of an emerald green Mekong River has become an internet sensation after being posted on Facebook page “Nakhonphanom Update” on Thursday (November 28).

This phenomenon surprised many people as Mekong River is usually brown.

The river has now turned into green and the water is much clearer making it looks like the sea.

It is thought to be the result of the tide being at its lowest in many years, which could be the result of the construction of a dam in China blocking water flow.

Southeast Asian digital travel-and-lifestyle platform Traveloka continues to strengthen its commitment to Thailand by offering the Japan Railway Pass (JR Pass).

Japan continues to be one of the top destinations for Thai users and the JR Pass, which covers 4,900 kilometres in 18 prefectures – including Kansai with its multiple attractions – promises a more enriching travel experience in Japan.

Traveloka and its partner JR West are distributing JR Passes on its app, becoming the first travel booking platform to provide them digitally in Thailand.

“Japan is Thais’ most popular spot for a vacation in a country that doesn’t share a border with Thailand,” says chief executive Caesar Indra.

The Japan National Tourism Organisation says more than a million Thais visited in 2018, including many travelling to more than one destination – and preferably by train.

“With a large number of Thai visitors to Japan choosing the Japan Railway network, it becomes important for us to provide convenient and easy booking,” Indra says. “Japan Railway is the perfect partner, enabling out users to select their preferred pass based on their requirements and anticipated itineraries, such as JR East, JR West and JR Shikoku.”

Eligible for travel throughout Japan with time periods that vary from seven to 21 days, JR provides a more affordable and efficient travel option, not just for JR-owned and -managed rail lines but also some bullet trains, buses, monorails and ferries.

The cost of a JR Pass can be recouped in just one return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto.

How many times in your life will you get a chance to name a pygmy hippopotamus – and maybe pocket Bt3,000 if that name is selected?

That’s what Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi is offering for an official name for its newest arrival, a newly born pygmy hippopotamus.

There are only two names in the running, as suggested by the little guy’s caretakers – Kaki and Moo Toon.

Pick one of those, enter the draw on the zoo’s Facebook page between December 20 and 28, and the winners will be drawn at random. One winner gets Bt3,000 and another 10 get free admission to the zoo for a year.

Pygmy hippopotamuses are only one-tenth the size of the typical wide-bodied variety and they tend to be shy, avoiding humans who aren’t bringing them an armload of vegetables and fruit.

Kaki/Moo Toon was born on October 27, the healthy sixth offspring of pigmy-hippo couple Tony and Jonah.

Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM) are encouraging residents and tourists to visit various attractions near four MRT stations including China Town, temples, palaces and shopping areas.

Despite boasting modern technology, Wat Mangkon, Samyot, Sanam Chai and Itsaraphap stations have been designed to bring back nostalgic feelings from 100 years ago and to retain the identities of specific areas around each station.

From Wat Mangkorn Station, it’s an easy walk to Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, the largest and most important Chinese Buddhist temple, and various old fashioned shopping stores and street food vendors on Yaowarat Road.

The area around Sam Yot Station features architecture from the reign of King Rama V in the trademark colours of Sino-Portuguese design. It is also near the historic neighbourhood or Wang Burapha and a leisurely stroll away from the Chao Phraya River.

Some of the most beautiful architecture from the Rattanakosin era can be reached from Sanam Chai Station, which is surrounded by many tourist attractions such as Pak Khlong Talat Market, Museum Siam, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace.

And close to Itsaraphap Station, visitors can explore Wang Lang Market, sample delicious food nearby, and enjoy the sunset from the banks of the Chao Phraya River.
