Pro-democracy activists calling themselves “independent citizens” marched from Victory Monument to Din Daeng intersection on Sunday to demand the PM’s resignation, the release of 11 protesters and abolition of the lese-majeste law.

The 11 protesters who were nabbed during earlier protests at the Din Daeng intersection are being held without bail in the Bangkok Remand Prison.

The protesters said an earlier announcement that they would hold a car rally from Democracy Monument to the 1st Infantry Regiment barracks where Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha lives was meant to bluff the police.

The protesters instead gathered at Victory Monument at 4.30pm before heading to Din Daeng at 5pm where riot police were stationed to prevent protesters from heading to the 1st Infantry Regiment barracks.

Those unable to break the police line held up their banners, though a clash was sparked at about 7pm when some protesters began lobbing firecrackers at police.

The police then began using an amplifier asking protesters to call off the protest as they were violating the emergency decree. After more than 10 minutes of clashing, heavy rains forced the protesters to disperse and the intersection was opened to traffic again at 8.35pm.

Reports say Sunday night’s protest was limited to a small number of people.

AOT prepares for 50% increase in passengers during high season

The Airports of Thailand (AOT)’s board of directors will meet on Wednesday to adjust its estimation of arrivals in line with the October to March flight schedule.

AOT prepares for 50% increase in passengers during high season

“Since Thailand is lifting restrictions, we believe that in October, Suvarnabhumi Airport will see up to 100,000 passengers per day, which is about 50 per cent of the pre-Covid levels,” AOT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said on Sunday. “The AOT board will adjust its estimates accordingly to prepare for the surge in arrivals in time for the winter or the high season.”

Nitinai added that AOT expects to see more arrivals from India and Singapore, as well as some passengers from China, which has started allowing business people and students to travel overseas.

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is currently welcoming up to 80,000 passengers daily, 50,000 of whom are international arrivals.

Six airports come under AOT’s jurisdiction, namely Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Hat Yai, and Chiang Rai.

“Airports upcountry are also seeing a surge in passengers. Hat Yai Airport has reported an 85 per cent increase, while Phuket and Chiang Mai are also seeing more chartered flights from South Korea,” Nitinai added. “We believe these six airports could see more than 200,000 passengers per day during the winter season.”

To cope with this increase in passengers, AOT has instructed all airports to open more check-in counters as well as increase the number of self-service and bag drop counters to allow passengers to check in and drop off their luggage automatically.

Oil Fund may hit THB100 billion shortfall by end June: Energy Ministry

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/in-focus/40016814

The Oil Fuel Fund may end up with 100 billion baht in deficit as it continues subsidising oil and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) amid soaring global oil prices.

Oil Fund may hit THB100 billion shortfall by end June: Energy Ministry

“The fund is currently 91.08 billion baht in deficit, with 54.57 billion baht shortfall in the oil account from a 10.34 baht per litre subsidy in diesel and 36.51 billion baht shortage in the LPG account from subsidising gas at 13.86 baht per kilogram,” an Energy Ministry source said on Sunday.

“However, the oil prices continue soaring worldwide, with West Texas crude hitting US$115 per barrel, Brent crude $118 per barrel and benzene and diesel hitting $157 and $172 per barrel, respectively. This will soon push the Oil Fuel Fund’s deficit up to 100 billion baht.”

The Energy Ministry estimates that the fund is spending 5.42 billion baht per week on subsidising up to 75 million litres daily and 600 million baht per week on LPG subsidies.

Sanctions on oil from Russia, OPEC Plus’s inability to boost its production and Libya’s drop in output due to political crises are all contributing to the boost in global oil prices. Analysts believe that if the situation persists, the global demand for oil in the second half of the year will exceed the supply by 1.5 million barrels daily.

An Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) committee meeting last week, chaired by Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow, approved a gradual increase of LPG prices at the refinery level to 19.98 baht per kilogram from July 1 to September 30. This will result in a 0.9346 baht per kilogram increase monthly.

The committee, however, rejected moves to revoke subsidies on LPG to alleviate the burden on the Oil Fuel Fund, as such a move will push the retail price of LPG up by 207.7 baht per 15kg canister, which will affect the public severely.

“There is, however, a possibility that EPPO will agree to increase the price cap on diesel to 38 baht from 35 baht per litre from July onward to help boost the Oil Fuel Fund’s liquidity,” the source added. “The ministry is also planning to negotiate with refineries to reduce their refining fee by 2 baht per litre.”

The source added that such measures are necessary to ensure the fund does not fall too deep in deficit.

“If these measures are not put in place, then when the global prices fall, the price of fuel in Thailand will not drop as we will need to continue contributing to the fund to settle debts,” the source said.

New Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt chose Klong Toei district as the location for his first mobile meeting on Sunday. Chadchart plans to hold mobile meetings in all 50 city districts to gather first-hand information from local officials on urgent problems.

Before chairing Sunday’s meeting, he visited Klong Toei’s Chalerm Pra Kiat Somdet Ya Public Park learning centre to take part in a tree-planting activity – part of his policy to plant one million trees around Bangkok to filter dust pollution.

During his visit Chadchart sampled locally grown organic vegetables, which he recommended as a healthy alternative to chemical-grown crops. He also tried a herbal drink made at the centre and sowed rice seeds in a demonstration paddy field.

Chadchart told reporters he decided to hold his first meeting in Klong Toei because it has the country’s biggest slum community.

The governor said over 20,000 complaints have been filed by Klong Toei slum dwellers via the Traffy Fondue Smart City platform app and 3,000 had been taken care of. He added that some problems were outside the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s jurisdiction but the BMA would coordinate with government agencies to solve them.

During the meeting, Chadchart instructed Klong Toei district officials to prioritise three policies.

First, they must reject corruption and work transparently.

Third, they must serve the people rather than caring about the governor’s feelings.

He said that to save city budget, he would try to procure the helmets via company CSR activities to improve safety on the school run.

Police said the suspect confessed to committing the robbery out of financial stress caused by crypto losses. To protect his legal rights, his identity was not revealed.

The robbery occurred at the Buan Lee gold shop on Chakkraphet Road in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district.

A man wearing a face mask entered the shop on Saturday before pulling a handgun from his backpack and waving it at staff and customers.

The shop’s owner, Kornrawik Wangcharoenrung, along with staff and some customers ran to the back room of the shop. The robber then grabbed the gold necklaces and fled. Two of the necklaces were later found on the pavement outside the shop.
