A room at Din Daeng flat burst in flames around midnight on Sunday. No serious injuries were reported, meanwhile, police are suspecting if the cause of the fire was from a gas tank explosion or the protestor’s fire bomb as there have been daily gatherings of the Thalu Gas group in the area.

The fire on the third floor of Din Daeng flat, room No.124 of building 1 in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district, reportedly occurred at 00.10am on Sunday. The flat residents said they heard a loud noise twice before the fire immediately ignited from inside the room. The residents and some of the Thalu Gas protesters in the area tried to run up to the scene to extinguish the blaze. Later, the firefighter officers were able to intercept the fire not long after the incident was reported.

The fire did not spread to the neighboring rooms. Two volunteer officers were reported with mild injuries due to the inhalation of smoke during firefighting.

Initially, the official is investigating the cause of the fire. Some of the witnesses told the reporters that they saw the ill-wishers threw fire bombs, while some said that it was a gas tank explosion.

Phuket national park encroachers slapped with hefty sentences #SootinClaimon.Com

The Criminal Court slapped five people with a jail sentence and ordered a defendant to pay 800 million baht in compensation for encroaching into the Sirinat National Park and Khao Ruak – Khao Muang National Forest in Phuket.

The sentence was issued on September 25.

“The Department [of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation] filed a case with the Department of Special Investigation [DSI] on August 14, 2012, after a group of businessmen allegedly used the Sor Kor 1 document to appropriate title deeds for 93 rai of land in Phuket worth 4 billion baht,” deputy director-general of the Royal Forest Department Cheewaphap Cheewatham said on Thursday.

Cheewaphap was previously the chief of Phuket’s Sirinat National Park.

“The 93 rai was actually located inside the national park and forest, and this was confirmed with aerial photographs. The DSI accepted the case in November 2014,” he said.

The court found five of the defendants guilty and sentenced two to 10 years in jail, namely Praphas Sae-Ong, who is on the run, and Anek Leepracha, a lobbyist responsible for buying several plots of land in Phuket. The court also revoked the land title deeds held by three other defendants but did not sentence them as two are deceased and one is a 90-year-old bedridden patient.

Another two defendants, an individual and a juristic entity, were acquitted because the court said they are only buyers and had nothing to do with the issuing of title deeds.

The court also ordered Anek to pay a compensation of 800 million baht to the state and told him to remove his people from the land under dispute immediately.

Cheewaphap added that the Royal Forest Department is investigating several other encroachment cases in Phuket.

Carbon credit trading in 2021 doubles from previous year #SootinClaimon.Com

The trend of reducing greenhouse gas emission that is growing among industrial nations worldwide has doubled the value of carbon credit trading in 2021 from the previous year to nearly $750 million, said Kiatchai Maitreewong, director of Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO).

He said during an online seminar “Virtual Forum Go Green” hosted by Krungthep Turakji newspaper on Thursday.

“Under the Emissions Trading System (ETS) of the Paris Agreement, countries can trade in the international carbon credit market to cover their shortfall in assigned amount units,” said Kiatchai. “Countries with surplus units can sell them to countries that are exceeding their emission targets.”

“As the need of carbon credit is rising, the value of carbon credit trading in the first eight months of 2021 has amounted to $748 million, doubling the trading value during the same period last year,” he said. “The price of carbon credit also rose to $3 per tonne from 2.5 per tonne in the previous year, while the total trade volume is expected to reach 240 million tonnes this year.

Kiatchai added that many organizations worldwide are becoming more engaged in net zero and carbon neutrality policies (reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and carbon to zero) to promote their corporate image and comply to requirements of international trade partners.

“In 2016 Thailand joined the Paris Agreement which aims to keep the rise in mean global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and preferably limit the increase to 1.5 degree Celsius to reduce the impacts of climate change,” he added. “In order to achieve this goal, it is estimated that the world need to reduce its carbon emission to less than 400 billion tonnes per year.”

Kiatchai further added that Thailand sets a target to reduce 20-25 per cent of carbon emission by 2030 or by 111-139 million tonnes, and aims to become a carbon neutral nation by 2065 to 2070. “It is vital that Thailand follow the framework of Paris Agreement or risk being boycotted by trade partners,” he said. “The government must also urge businesses to reduce carbon emission using the laws and tax measures, while companies must employ the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principle in their business operation.”

Phuket bookings on rise as Thailand entry period cut to 7 days #SootinClaimon.Com

#SootinClaimon.Com : ขอบคุณแหล่งข้อมูล : หนังสือพิมพ์ The Nation.

https://www.nationthailand.com/blogs/in-focus/40006866

From tomorrow (October 1), foreign tourists in the “Phuket sandbox” will only have to spend one week on the island before they can travel to other provinces in Thailand. The sandbox period was reduced from 14 days in a bid to lure more tourists after a lukewarm response in the first three months.

Since its launch on July 1, the Phuket sandbox has drawn only 37,978 foreign visitors – little more than one-third of the 100,000 targeted by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The low numbers have been blamed on various factors, including the Covid-19 situation and intensive screening measures.

The top five countries of origin for Phuket sandbox visitors are the US (5,792), Israel (5,414), UK (4,740), Germany (3,795) and France (3,646).

Kongsak Khupongsakorn, president of the Southern Thai Hotels Association, said that disease control among tourists on the island has been very good since July. But he lamented that tourist numbers have been low.

He has higher hopes for the fourth quarter, especially if authorities respond to pressure from the private sector by allowing Phuket restaurants to serve alcohol, simplifying entry requirements at the airport, and reducing the required number of Covid tests from three to two.

Kongsak said tourists had already booked 150,000 nights in October – matching bookings for each of the three previous months. He expects October bookings to rise as high as 200,000-250,000 nights as the situation improves.
