Another one million doses of Sinopharm vaccine arrive in Bangkok

Two Thai Airways flights landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Sunday bringing a million doses of Sinopharm vaccine.

The Cargo & Mail Commercial Department and THAI Cargo Terminal Service Department of Thai Airways International had been entrusted by the Chulabhorn Royal Academy to deliver one million doses of “Sinopharm” Covid-19 vaccine with a total weight of 33.39 tons from Beijing.

Professor Nithi Mahanonda, secretary-general of Chulabhorn Royal Academy, and director of Chulabhorn Hospital, said the academy will open vaccine reservation again on July 27 as 48,756 registrants had not completed their registration. The cost of two doses of Sinopharm vaccine per person is THB1,554 (THB777 per dose). For every 2 doses, the Chulabhorn Royal Academy will donate half a dose to the underprivileged.

Ministry arranging return to home province for Covid patients

The Public Health Ministry has cooperated with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) and related agencies on facilitating Covid-19 patients to return to their home province without risk of the virus spreading.

The move came after 504,241 people wanted to return to their home province via the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration system in July.

Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, Public Health Ministry deputy permanent secretary, said the returnees may cause the virus to spread as some of them had to rely on public transport.

“So far, 31,175 patients had returned to their province of which 70.37 per cent have mild symptoms,” he said.

He explained that once Covid-19 patients contact the NHSO, the ministry’s medical staff will organise transport and evaluate patients’ symptoms before departure.

“The provincial governor and public health officers will arrange care for patients after arriving at the destination,” he said.

Meanwhile, Attaporn Limpanyalert, NHSO deputy secretary, said home and community isolations are another way to enable Covid-19 patients to return to their home province.

He added that patients who wish to return to their home province can register via NHSO website or contact the office’s hotline 1330 press 15.

Inactivated vaccine followed by vector vaccine multiplies immunity boost: virologist #SootinClaimon.Com

Inactivated vaccine followed by vector vaccine multiplies immunity boost: virologist

A vaccine cocktail of Sinovac and AstraZeneca has proved very effective, Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, reported on Saturday.

The idea to mix vaccines was considered due to limited doses for mass inoculation and the rise of the Delta strain in Thailand.

Two doses of inactivated vaccination would help immunity rise to an average level of 100 units, said Dr Yong. If two doses of the vector vaccine are given 10 weeks apart, the immune system will rise to 900 units. If the vaccines are alternated — inactivated vaccine followed by the vector virus at 3-4 weeks — the recipient achieved a high immunity of 700 units.

However, two doses of the inactivated vaccine followed by the virus vector vaccine — as front-line medical personnel are now doing — has been found to provide an average immunity boost of 10,000 units.

His team is currently conducting in-depth research into its ability to block the virus in each species, including the Delta variant.

From past data, the Delta strain evades immunity hence higher levels of immunity are needed until a vaccine that matches the epidemic strain or a second-generation vaccine is available, the virologist said.

BMA fine-tunes water pumping stations to deal with flooding

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) is preparing water pumping stations throughout Thon Buri area to cope with water overflowing from the North and the high tide during the upcoming rainy season.

On Saturday, Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang, along with Narong Ruangsri, deputy director of the Department of Drainage and Sewerage, and the team visited the Klong Bangkok Yai pumping station in Thon Buri district for preparations to prevent floods from October to November.

There are 37 pumping stations along Chao Phraya River in Thon Buri. The biggest station is located in Klong Bangkok Yai with its capability to pump 57 cubic metres of water per second from 19 pumping machines.

Four navigation locks located in Klong Bangkok Yai, Klong Chak Phra, Klong Mon and Klong Dao Khanong will need to be activated for water vehicles with precautions during rainy season to prevent floodwaters from the North and sea tide water overflowing the Chao Phraya River banks.

Eight Covid-related hotline numbers made toll free

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) announced on Saturday that Covid-19-related hotline numbers will be toll-free from Sunday following complaints from netizens.

DES Minister Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn said the following hotline numbers could be called free of charge: 1330, 1323, 1422, 1442, 1646, 1668, 1669 and 1506.

On Friday, a Facebook user (whose account was not revealed) had posted that his student had called the bed-finding hotline 1669, arranged by the Department of Medical Services, until the phone credit ran out.

“I doubted if it could be true, so I asked mobile service providers. Their answer was ‘this line is not toll-free’. It costs THB1.50 per minute. Operator DTAC subtracts the minutes from the package first. The surplus charge will be per minute then. There is no information from other providers yet,” his FB post read.

The post added that the hotline of the National Health Security Office was also not toll-free.
