Bull shark attacks keeper at Chantaburi study centre

An official at Kung Krabaen Bay study centre in Chanthaburi province was bitten by a fully grown bull shark on Friday, leaving him with a severe wound. Colleagues had to rush into the bloody water and pull him out to prevent more attacks from other sharks.

The attack occurred at the aquaculture demonstration unit as officials transported three bull sharks, each weighing more than 100 kilos, in preparation for a low tide on Sunday.
One of the sharks got frightened and sank its teeth in Boonterm Singhasura, 55.

His co-workers scrambled to pull him out of the water instantly before the sharks smelt blood and went in for the kill.
Boonterm suffered a severe injury to his leg and was rushed to hospital.

“We were leading the sharks through a tunnel into deeper water. Boonterm was pushing one shark into the tunnel. The shark was familiar with him, but for some reason it got frightened and turned around to bite him,” said a colleague of the victim.

“We thought we had formed close bonds with these sharks after constantly working with them in the pool, aiding them when the tide is low and placing oxygen tubes in their mouths. But after this incident, I will never get into the pool again,” added the colleague.

Shark attacks are rare in Thailand, with only a few incidents reported. The most recent case – a non-fatal attack on a foreign tourist in Hua Hin – was reported on April 16, 2018.
However, sharkattackdata.com reports that a foreign diver, 35, was killed by a shark in Phang Nga on January 5, 2000.

Vaccine strategy to focus on inoculating senior citizens, high-risk cases

The Ministry of Public Health has adjusted its Covid-19 vaccine distribution plan, focusing on vaccinating elders and patients with seven high-risk diseases.

The government said around 13 million doses of vaccine were purchased since July 19 – 8 million AstraZeneca and 5 million Sinovac.

The main focus groups will be inoculated with these vaccines until August 31.

The ministry revealed that between February 28 and July 17, around 3.44 million people had received complete doses of Covid-19 vaccine — around 6.9 per cent of the 50 million target.

Of the numbers, 1,709,095 were the average population, while 146,930 were elders.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) stated on July 8 that the infection and death rates of elders had increased at the end of June.

In July, most of the Covid-19 vaccine stock will be provided to elderly people, in order to reduce the severity of the illness and risk of death, DDC director-general Sophon Iamsirithaworn added.

Sophon said that Thailand’s elderly population was over 13 million — 1.8 million in Bangkok and 11.8 million in other provinces.

He said that 10 per cent of elders all over the country had already been vaccinated, while old people in Bangkok needed to be quickly inoculated.

According to the DDC, as of July 14 there had been 2,840 deaths from Covid-19 in the present outbreak. Of the total, 90 per cent, or 2,556, were patients with underlying diseases or risk factors, such as obesity, pregnancy or senility.

Bangkok temple’s crematorium collapses from weight of Covid deaths

A crematorium in a Bangkok temple has reportedly fallen apart from the pressure of cremating so many corpses recently.

Images of the crematorium in Thonburi’s Wat Bang Nam Chon temple were published online on Friday by Jirasek Wattanamongkol, an adviser to the governor of Bangkok.

The photos showed a big crack in the crematorium’s base and a collapsed chimney.
For the past 25 years, the crematorium has been tending to an average of three corpses daily before it fell apart.

The temple has estimated it needs more than 5 million baht to build two new crematoriums, a temporary one for the Covid period and a permanent one.

Jirasek said those wishing to make donations can deposit money in Kasikornbank account number 724-2-24539-8.

Bangkok infection rate ‘out of control’ as 1 in 5 test positive

The Rural Doctors Society (RDS) warned on Friday that the infection rate in Bangkok communities has reached 19 per cent, indicating that the outbreak is now out of control in the capital.

RDS is working with the National Health Security Office (NHSO) on active case finding in over 30 Bangkok communities that have never before been investigated by the Public Health Ministry. Eleven teams of doctors have been giving swab tests at 14 locations with a target of testing 15,000 people in total.

Most of the doctors running the testing campaign are from Jana Hospital in Songkhla province, said Dr Suphat Hasuwankij, president of the Rural Doctors Society.

“With limited personnel we can test about 500 people in the morning and 500 more in the afternoon,” he said.

However, testing people will only help identify the infected so they can be isolated from others in the community, he added. “The risk of the virus spreading will still persist until we vaccinate everyone to reduce the infection rate, severity of symptoms and deaths.”

The Army is offering free flights for Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms who wish to receive medical treatment in their home provinces.

The move is in line with Army chief Narongphan Jitkaewtae’s policy to deploy military resources to benefit citizens during the Covid-19 crisis, said Army spokesperson Colonel Sirichan Ngathong.

“The Army has modified aircraft security, ventilation and communication systems to support Covid-19 patients,” she explained.

The Covid-19 Aero Medical Evacuation Army Team (ArmCAME) of pilots, engineers and medical staff would take care of patients throughout the journey in line with medical aviation standards, she added.

Bangkok rescuers explain why bodies were left lying on streets #SootinClaimon.Com

Bangkok rescuers explain why bodies were left lying on streets

A rescue official provided an explanation on Thursday as to why three bodies were left lying on Bangkok streets on Tuesday and the difficulties they face.

“The deceased person’s family or the individual who finds the body will need to contact the police first for crime-scene investigation before the rescue team can collect the body for autopsy,” said Kraisorn Thongmuang, an ambulance driver with the Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

It must be understood that the foundation’s officers do not have the authority to touch a body before the arrival of police. If a mistake occurs, rescue officials may be prosecuted for camouflaging the corpse. The foundation has to team up with specific officers to complete this operation. Special training is required for this job.

Officers must perform their duties under the highest safety measures to avoid infection. Of the bodies we collect daily, 70 per cent or 20 corpses are those of Covid-19 patients. Each pick-up takes a long time because an investigation has to be launched, PPE suits need to be worn and the body has to be wrapped in three layers of sterilized plastic.

Despite these complicated procedures and inadequate staff, transportation and equipment, we can collect four to five bodies within two hours, he added.

“Only two rescue foundations have been given the authority to collect the bodies of Covid-19 patients in Bangkok and its perimeter. The foundations are Ruamkatanyu and Poh Teck Tung. We are not tired or discouraged, and are willing to perform our duty wholeheartedly as long as society understands that we are doing our best,” Kraisorn said.
